Abstract
Singlet oxygen (1O2) is a selective reactive oxygen species that plays a key role for the fate of various organic compounds in the aquatic environment under sunlight irradiation, engineered water oxidation systems, atmospheric water droplets, and biomedical systems. While the initial rate-determining charge-transfer reaction mechanisms and kinetics of 1O2 have been studied extensively, no comprehensive studies have been performed to elucidate the reaction mechanisms with organic compounds that have various functional groups. In this study, we use density functional theory calculations to determine elementary reaction mechanisms with a wide variety of organic compounds. The theoretically calculated aqueous-phase free energies of activation of single electron transfer and 1O2 addition reactions are compared to the experimentally determined rate constants in the literature to determine linear free-energy relationships. The theoretically calculated free energies of activation for the groups of phenolates and phenols show excellent correlations with the Hammett constants that accept electron densities by through-resonance. The dominant elementary reaction mechanism is discussed for each group of compounds. As a practical implication, we demonstrate the fate of environmentally relevant organic compounds induced by photochemically produced intermediate species at different pH and evaluate the impact of predicting rate constants to the half-life.

Abstract
The redox kinetics involving the reaction of N, N'-phenylenebis(salicyalideneiminato)cobalt(III) ([CoSalophen]+) and l-cysteine (LSH) was studied using pseudo-first order approach under the following conditions, [H+] = 1.0 × 10-3 mol/dm3, μ = 0.1 C2 mol/dm3 (NaCl), λmax = 470 nm and T = 27 ± 1 °C in DMSO: H2O; 1:4 v: v medium. The redox reaction was 1st order in both [CoSalophen+] and [LSH], with the overall 2nd order. Hydrogen ion concentration effect revealed the activeness of both the protonated and deprotonated form of the reductant, positive Brønsted-Debye salt effect and was also ion catalyzed. There was no evidence suggesting an intermediate complex of significant stability in the reaction. Free radical was detected to take part and as such the reasonable mechanistic pathway for the reaction is suggested to be outer-sphere, hence proposed.

Abstract
Reports that promote persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) as a viable alternative to hydrogen peroxide-based processes have been rapidly accumulating in recent water treatment literature. Various strategies to activate peroxide bonds in persulfate precursors have been proposed and the capacity to degrade a wide range of organic pollutants has been demonstrated. Compared to traditional AOPs in which hydroxyl radical serves as the main oxidant, persulfate-based AOPs have been claimed to involve different in situ generated oxidants such as sulfate radical and singlet oxygen as well as nonradical oxidation pathways. However, there exist controversial observations and interpretations around some of these claims, challenging robust scientific progress of this technology toward practical use. This Critical Review comparatively examines the activation mechanisms of peroxymonosulfate and peroxydisulfate and the formation pathways of oxidizing species. Properties of the main oxidizing species are scrutinized and the role of singlet oxygen is debated. In addition, the impacts of water parameters and constituents such as pH, background organic matter, halide, phosphate, and carbonate on persulfate-driven chemistry are discussed. The opportunity for niche applications is also presented, emphasizing the need for parallel efforts to remove currently prevalent knowledge roadblocks.

Abstract
The [Co(naphophen)(PPh3)(OH2)]ClO4 and [Co(naphophen)(PBu3)(OH2)]BF4 (where naphophen=bis(naphthaldehyde)1,2-phenylenediimine) complexes were synthesized and chracterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis techniques. The coordination geometry of the synthesized complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography. Cobalt (III) complexes have six-coordinated pseudo-octahedral geometry in which the O(1), O(2), N(1) and N(2) atoms of the Schiff base forms the equatorial plane. These complexes showed a dimeric structure via hydrogen bonding between the phenolate oxygen and the hydrogens of the coordinated H2O molecule. The theoretical calculations were also performed to optimize the structure of the complexes in the gas phase to confirm the structures proposed by X-ray crystallography. In addition, UV-Visible and IR spectra of complexes were calculated and compared with the corresponding experimental spectra to complete the experimental structural identification. The synthesized complexes were incorporated onto the Montmorillonite-K10 nanoclay via simple ion-exchange reaction. The structure and morphology of the obtained nanohybrids were identified by FT-IR, XRD, TGA/DTA, SEM and TEM techniques. Based on the XRD results of the new nanohybrid materials, the Schiff base complexes were intercalated in the interlayer spaces of clay. SEM and TEM micrographs of the clay/complex shows that the resulting hybrid nanomaterials has layer structures.

Abstract
The [Co(Me(2)Salen)(PBu(3))(OH(2))]BF4 and [Co(Me(2)Salen)(PPh(3))(Solv)]BF(4), complexes were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis, (1)H NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis techniques. The coordination geometry of [Co(Me(2)Salen)(PPh(3))(H(2)O)]BF(4) was determined by X-ray crystallography. It has been found that the complex is containing [Co(Me(2)Salen)(PPh(3))(H(2)O)]BF(4) and [Co(Me(2)Salen)(PPh(3))(EtOH)]BF(4) hexacoordinate species in the solid state. Cobalt atom exhibits a distorted octahedral geometry and the Me(2)Salen ligand has the N2O2 coordinated environment in the equatorial plane. The [Co(Me(2)Salen)(PPh(3))(H(2)O)]BF(4) complex shows a dimeric structure via hydrogen bonding between the phenolate oxygen and hydrogens of coordinated H2O molecule. These complexes were incorporated into Montmorillonite-K10 nanoclay. The modified clays were identified by FT-IR, XRD, EDX, TGA/DTA, SEM and TEM techniques. According to the XRD results of the new nanohybrid materials, the Schiff base complexes are intercalated in the interlayer spaces of the clay. SEM and TEM micrographs show that the resulting hybrid nanomaterials have layer structures. Also, TGA/DTG results show that the intercalation reaction was taken place successfully.

Abstract
Previously reported experimental results indicate that photooxygenation of homochiral N-(hydroxyalkyl)-2-methylpyrroles with singlet oxygen yields trans-rather than cis-bicyclic lactams as the major product. In this study, the origin of selectivity in this reaction has been investigated with computational methods. Relative stabilities of homochiral N-(hydroxyalkyl)-2-methylpyrrole conformers and their effect on pi-facial selectivity of 1O2 were extensively studied. Stepwise and concerted reaction mechanisms, starting from the endoperoxide intermediates, were proposed and modeled in vacuum using the UB3LYP method with the 6-31+G** basis set. Solvent calculations were carried out in CH2Cl2, by means of the integral equation formalism-polarizable continuum model (IEF-PCM) at the UB3LYP/6-31+G** level of theory. Free energies of activation leading to both diastereomers were analyzed in an effort to explain the stereoselectivity and product distribution. Steric interactions among the pyrrole substituents were shown to lead to a rotational barrier higher than 10 kcal/mol. Hence, hindered internal rotation is suggested to cause one pyrrole conformer to be substantially overpopulated. This in turn has a major effect on pi-facial selectivity of 1O2, thereby favoring one endoperoxide over the other and leading to the diastereoselective synthesis of trans-pyrrolooxazolones. The importance of hindered internal rotors, for an accurate calculation of the frequency factors of a chemical reaction, has already been mentioned in the literature many times; however, in this work hindered internal rotors also seem to dictate the diastereoselective outcome of the reaction.

Abstract
Bulky salen CuL(x) derived from aliphatic polymethylene diamines, H(2)N-(CH(2))(x)-NH(2), where n = 2-6, and 3,5-di-t-butylsalicylaldehyde (H(2)L(x)) and some corresponding tetrahydrosalan complexes (CuL(x)') have been synthesized and characterized by their IR, UV-vis absorption and EPR spectra, by magnetic moments and by cyclic voltammetry in acetonitrile (for H(2)L(x)) and DMF (for CuL(x)). Complexes CuL(x) and CuL(x)' are magnetically normal (mu(exp) = 1.83-1.91 mu(B)). EPR spectra CuL(x) characterized by the axial g and A(Cu) tensors with g parallel > g perpendicular and without (14)N-shf resolution in CHCl(3)/toluene at 300 and 150K. The CV studies on acetonitrile solutions of H(2)L(x) revealed a well-defined quasi-reversible redox wave at E(1/2) = 0.95-1.15 V versus Ag/AgCl but CV of the CuL(x) complexes in DMF exhibit weak pronounced irreversible oxidation waves at E(pa)(1) = 0.51 - 098 V and E(pa)(2) = 1.16 - 1.33 V attributable to metal centered Cu(II/III) and ligand centered CuL(x)/CuL(x)*+ couples, respectively. A poorly defined wave was observed for the quasi-reversible reduction Cu(II)/Cu(I) at potentials less than -1.0 V.
