Abstract
A very short and efficient enantioselective total synthesis of the tricyclic marine alkaloids (-)-lepadiformine (3), (+)-cylindricine C (1c), and (-)-fasicularin (4) has been developed utilizing the formyloxy 1-azaspiro[4.5]decane 5 as a common intermediate. The key strategic element for the synthesis was the formic acid-induced intramolecular conjugate azaspirocyclization, which proved to be a highly efficient and stereoselective way to rapid construction of the 1-azaspirocyclic substructure of these natural products in a single operation. Thus, the common intermediate 5, synthesized in two steps with 70% overall yield starting from the known (S)-N-Boc-2-pyrrolidinone 7 via the conjugate spirocyclization using an acyclic ketoamide 6, was utilized for the concise and stereoselective total synthesis of (-)-lepadiformine (3), which was accomplished in seven steps with 45% overall yield from 5 (31% yield from 7). The developed strategy based on the conjugate spirocyclization was also applied to the stereoselective total synthesis of (+)-cylindricine C (1c), which was achieved in 10 steps from 5 in 18% overall yield (12% yield from 7). Further application of this approach using 5 led to the synthesis of (-)-fasicularin (4), wherein an extremely efficient method for the introduction of the thiocyanato group via an aziridinium intermediate at the last step was developed. Thus, the highly efficient first enantioselective total synthesis of (-)-fasicularin was accomplished in nine steps with an overall yield of 41% from 5 (28% yield from 7).

Abstract
A group of naturally occurring substances containing nitrogen is widely distributed in plants as well as in fungi, animal, marine organisms, and insects, and many exhibit significant biological activity. These natural products with a huge variety of chemical structures include antibiotics, antitumor agents, immunostimulants, drugs affecting the cardiovascular and central nervous systems, analgesics etc. The diverse activities and low natural abundance of this group of natural products when coupled with their molecular complexity warrant development of new and efficient synthetic methods and strategy for the total synthesis of these products, in particular alkaloids. The purpose of this review is to describe some of our achievements in the total synthesis of the naturally-occurring bases including the Dendrobatid alkaloids pumiliotoxin B and allopumiliotoxin A, the anitibiotic streptazolin, the tricyclic marine alkaloids isolated from the ascidians such as fasicularin, lepadiformine, and cylindricine C, and the dimeric monoterpene alkaloid incarvillateine as well as the formal total synthesis of the spirocyclic marine alkaloids halichlorine and pinnaic acid, which are isolated from the Japanese marine sponge and the Okinawan bivalve, respectively.

Abstract
A new synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted pyrrolidines and piperidines is described. This mild procedure is based on the one-pot oxidative decarboxylation-beta-iodination of alpha-amino acid carbamates or amides. The iodine is introduced at the previously unfunctionalized 3-position. Different substituents can be introduced at C-2, e.g., hydroxy, alkoxy, allyl, alkyl, etc. A trans relationship between the C-2 and C-3 substituents is exclusively obtained. The influence of the solvent and the ring size of the starting amino acid are studied, as well as the nature of the protecting group on the nitrogen. The stereoselectivity of the reaction was also studied using chiral methyl (2S,4S)-4-acetyloxyproline-1-carboxylate (8). The products obtained can be manipulated to give bicyclic systems present in many natural products. By using the tandem decarboxylation-iodination-alkylation reaction, 2-substituted-3-iodopyrrolidines are formed, which are precursors of 2-substituted-2,5-dihydropyrrols.
