Abstract
A straightforward synthesis of (+)-trans-(4S,5R)- and (+)-cis-(4R,5R)-whisky lactones starting from d-(+)-mannitol has been reported here in fewer number of efficient steps compared to existing literature processes involving d-mannitol as the chiral pool starting material. Chiron approach directly translated chirality of d-mannitol to one of the two chiral centers in these target molecules. Toward this end, stereoisomerically pure trans- and cis-iodomethyl-γ-lactones were formed in the penultimate step. These two acted as versatile advanced common intermediates as they were also converted to the (+)-trans-(4S,5R)- and (+)-cis-(4R,5R)-cognac lactones, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, till date no synthesis of cognac lactones starting from d-mannitol has been reported. All these lactones are identified as the key aroma components of aged alcoholic beverages.

Abstract
The electron ionization (EI) and fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectral fragmentations of ten copper(II) dichloride (dibromide, diformate, diacetate and dithiocyanate) complexes of (-)-sparteine and (-)-alpha-isosparteine were investigated. Fragmentation pathways, elucidation of which was assisted by accurate mass measurements and metastable transitions (EI-MS), as well as FAB/collision-induced dissociation (CID) mass spectral measurements are discussed. The data obtained create the basis for the differentiation of the ligand (sparteine or alpha-isosparteine) in the investigated complexes. The comparison of the results with those obtained previously for corresponding zinc(II) complexes forms the basis for the differentiation of metals in these compounds. The results show that both EI-MS and FAB-MS are very useful tools for the differentiation of ligands, as well as metals in the series of Zn(II) and Cu(II) dichloride (dibromide, diacetate, diformate, dithioacetate) complexes of (-)-sparteine and (-)-alpha-isosparteine.

Abstract
1-trimethylsilyl-1-alkenyl carbamates 1 are deprotonated by n-butyllithium/(-)-sparteine (2) with a high degree of enantiotopic differentiation in the gamma-position to form the enantiomerically enriched allyllithium derivatives 3. Trapping these with several electrophiles proceeds stereospecifically in an anti-S(E)' or syn-S(E)' substitution to form products 4 or ent-4, respectively. Compounds 3a (R = Me) and 3b (R = Ph) exhibit toward carbonyl electrophiles opposite senses of almost complete stereospecificity, thus for 3b.2 the involvement of a eta(3)-complex is suggested. Abstract
A novel methodology based upon the allylmetalation step followed by an Intramolecular Sakurai Cyclization (IMSC) provides an efficient access to a variety of tetrahydropyran derivatives. This new strategy nicely complements our initial protocol that embodied a tandem ene reaction/IMSC sequence. Both mono- and dihydroxy-tetrahydropyrans could be easily assembled with complete stereocontrol at the various chiral centers.

Abstract
[reaction: see text](-)-Sparteine-mediated lithiation/transmetalation/substitution of N-Boc allylic amines provides anti-configured homoaldol precursors in yields of 38-85% and enantiomeric ratios of 83:17-99:1. Subsequent O-protection and hydrolysis allows access to O-protected homoaldol adducts in good yields. The absolute configurations of the homoaldol products have been assigned by calculation of optical rotations and by X-ray crystallography of derivatives. A stereochemical course of reaction for the lithiation/transmetalation/substitution sequence is proposed.
