Abstract
A strategy for the syntheses of pyrrolo [2,1-a] isoquinolines and indolizinoindolones via a Brønsted acid and Lewis acid co-promoted cascade reaction has been developed. The strategy was exemplified in the total synthesis of Erysotramidine.

Abstract
The present chapter describes isolation, biogenetic proposals, and syntheses of the natural products 1-4 and 10-11 with a pyrrolo[2,1-a]-isoquinoline framework. Moreover, the syntheses of some structural analogs are discussed. The pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines are of interest due to their promising biological activities. For crispine A (1), many total syntheses have been reported and for trolline (3), only three. Only one total synthesis has been reported for each of the following natural products: peyoglutam (10), mescalotam (11), and the antitumor active crispine B (2). Some of the pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline alkaloids have not been synthesized yet. The following three tables summarize the synthetic efforts toward crispine A (1) (Table 1: racemic syntheses; Table 2: enantioselective syntheses) and trolline (3) (Table 3).

Abstract
3-Acylindolizines (5a-5f) and their benzo- analogues 1-acylpyrrolo[1,2-a]quinolines (6a-6f) and 1-acylpyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines (7a-7i) are regioselectively synthesized by a convenient one pot reaction of the corresponding pyridinium (quinolinium, isoquinolinium) ylide with maleic anhydride (MA) in the presence of the mild oxidant tetrakispyridinecobalt(ii) dichromate (TPCD). These reactions proceed via a tandem reaction sequence of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylide with MA, anhydride hydrolysis and oxidative bisdecarboxylation of the primary cycloadducts followed by dehydrogenative aromatization of the dihydroindolizines. TPCD serves as both decarboxylation and dehydrogenation reagent in the reactions. These results show that TPCD is a promising new reagent for bisdecarboxylation of aliphatic carboxylates.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A new strategy for the synthesis of 3-demethoxyerythratidinone has been developed and is based on an extraordinarily facile intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of a 2-imido-substituted furan. During the course of the synthesis, several novel acid-induced rearrangement reactions were encountered.

Abstract
Enantiodivergent synthesis of C-10b-substituted pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines starting from an enantiomerically pure N-phenethylnorborn-5-en-endo-2,3-dicarboxyimide 3a, with a 2-exo-hydroxy-10-bornylsulfinyl group as a chiral auxiliary, has been developed. The key transformations are derived from diastereoselective intramolecular cyclization of aryllithiums and alpha-amidoalkylation reactions, with the ethylidene bridge of the norbornene moiety dictating the stereochemical outcome in both types of reactions. Thus, the organolithium addition-intramolecular alpha-amidoalkylation sequence on imide 3a afforded stereoselectively the R configuration at C-12b, whereas the tandem Parham cyclization-intermolecular alpha-amidoalkylation reactions on the corresponding iodinated imide 3b occurred with complete control of stereoselectivity, leading to the epimer at C-12b. Subsequent reductive removal of the chiral auxiliary and retro-Diels-Alder reaction afforded (10bS)- and (10bR)-pyrroloisoquinolines 1 in high yields and optical purities (>99% ee).

Abstract
Sodium borohydride regioselectively reduced various 3-sulfonyl glutarimides 1 to hydroxy piperidones 2, which were further dehydrated to 3,4-dihydro-5-sulfonylpyridin-2-ones 3 in the presence of boron trifluoride. Formal synthesis of 8a-epi-dendroprimine (4) possessing an indolizidine ring system has been accomplished via intramolecular radical cyclization of cyclic vinyl sulfone 5.

Abstract
1,5,6,10b-Tetrahydropyrrolo[2,1-alpha]isoquinolin-3(2H)-ones 17a,b, 17d,e, and 5,12b-dihydroisoindolo[1,2-alpha]isoquinolin-8(6H)-ones 22a-e were prepared by intramolecular cyclizations of 1-(2-arylethyl)-5-benzotriazolyl-pyrrolidin-2-ones 15a,b, 15d,e, and 3-benzotriazolyl-2-(2-arylethyl)-1-isoindolinones 20a-e, respectively, in the presence of titanium chloride. Products from chiral amines were obtained with stereoselectivities of > or = 94%.
