Influence of diet palatability on noradrenergic feeding response in the rat

Injection of noradrenaline into the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus produces vigorous gnawing in satiated rats

Single injections of noradrenaline (NA) into the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) initiate short bouts of eating in the rat. The effect of the injections of NA (40 nM) into the PVN on gnawing was studied in satiated male rats that had displayed a reliable eating response to NA. The NA injections produced numerous bouts of prolonged and vigorous gnawing of wood pieces shaped like food pellets. The gnawing response started 0.5-2 min after the injection of NA and lasted for 20-25 min. The results suggest that the increase in gnawing and eating evoked by NA might be related to facilitation of the oral responses, and a changed sensitivity to the food related stimuli, in addition to an intrinsic increase in appetite.

Norepinephrine-facilitated eating: reduction in saccharin preference and conditioned flavor preferences with increase in quinine aversion

Paraventricular (PVN) hypothalamic norepinephrine (NE) injections which facilitated feeding were nonetheless found to reduce both the unconditioned preference for saccharin and starch-conditioned preferences for almond odor and lemon taste, as well as enhancing aversion to quinine. These results add to the evidence that PVN NE elicits eating by attenuating a satiety signal.

Effects of hypothalamic knife cuts on feeding induced by paraventricular norepinephrine injections

The relationship between the fiber systems involved in the hypothalamic noradrenergic feeding response and the medial hypothalamic (MH) hyperphagia syndrome was appraised in male rats using knife cuts. Parasagittal knife cuts in the perifornical hypothalamus produced hyperphagia and excessive weight gain but failed to disrupt feeding in response to paraventricular hypothalamic injections of norepinephrine (NE). Coronal knife cuts in the posterior hypothalamus which extended from the midline to the lateral perifornical region also failed to disrupt NE feeding. These findings indicate that the output of the noradrenergic feeding system does not follow the feeding pathway implicated in the MH hyperphagia syndrome. They also suggest that the output of the noradrenergic feeding system is not directed laterally beyond the level of the fornix nor caudally into the lower brainstem over the medial forebrain bundle.
