Zinc phosphate nanoparticles: A review on physical, chemical, and biological synthesis and their applications

Nanotechnology is considered one of the emerging fields of science that has influenced diverse applications, including food, biomedicine, and cosmetics. The production and usage of materials with nanoscale dimensions like nanoparticles are attractive parts of nanotechnology. Among different nanoparticles, zinc phosphate nanoparticles have attracted attention due to their biocompatibility, biosafety, non-toxicity, and environmental compatibility. These nanoparticles could be employed in various applications like anticorrosion, antibacterial, dental cement, glass ceramics, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. A variety of physical, chemical, and green synthesis methods have been used to synthesize zinc phosphate nanoparticles. All these methods have some limitations along with certain advantages. Chemical approaches may cause health risks and environmental problems due to the toxicity of hazardous chemicals used in these techniques. Moreover, physical methods require high amounts of energy as well as expensive instruments. However, biological methods are free of chemical contaminants and eco-friendly. This review is aimed to explore different methods for the synthesis of zinc phosphate nanoparticles, including physical, chemical, and more recently, biological approaches (using various sources such as plants, algae, and microorganisms). Also, it summarizes the practicable applications of zinc phosphate nanoparticles as anticorrosion pigment, dental cement, and drug delivery agents.

Enhanced cytocompatibility and antibacterial property of zinc phosphate coating on biodegradable zinc materials

Zinc (Zn) has recently emerged as a promising biodegradable metal thanks to its critical physiological roles and promising degradation behavior. However, cytocompatibility and antibacterial property of Zn is still suboptimal, in part, due to the excessive Zn ions released during degradation. Inspired by the calcium phosphate-based minerals in natural bone tissue, zinc phosphate (ZnP) coatings were prepared on pure Zn using a chemical conversion method in this study. The coating morphology was then optimized through controlling the pH of coating solution, resulting in a homogeneous micro-/nano-ZnP coating structure. The ZnP coating significantly increased the cell viability, adhesion, and differentiation of pre-osteoblasts and vascular endothelial cells, while significantly reduced the adhesion of the platelets and E. coli. Additionally, ZnP coating significantly reduced the Zn ion release from the bulk material during degradation process, resulting in a much lower Zn2+ concentration and pH change in the surrounding environment. The improved hemocompatibility, cytocompatibility and antibacterial performance of ZnP coated Zn biomaterials could be mainly attributed to the controlled Zn ion release and micro-/nano-scaled coating structure. Taken together, ZnP coating on Zn-based biomaterial appears to be a viable approach to enhance its biocompatibility and antibacterial property as well as to control its degradation rate. Statement of Significance Zn and its alloys are promising biodegradable implant materials for orthopedic and cardiovascular applications. However, notable cytotoxicity has been reported due to degradation products accumulated in the local environment, largely overdosed Zn2+. Thus, controlling burst Zn2+ release is the key to minimize the toxicity of Zn implants. To achieve this goal, we prepared a homogenous ZnP coating on Zn metals thanks to its easy synthesis, stable chemical property, and good biocompatibility. Results showed that ZnP not only improved the cell viability, adhesion and proliferation, but also significantly reduced the attachment of platelet and bacterial. Therefore, ZnP could be a promising approach to improve the functional performance of Zn-based implants, and potentially be applied to many other medical implants.

Microstructural characterization of dental zinc phosphate cements using combined small angle neutron scattering and microfocus X-ray computed tomography

OBJECTIVE

To characterize the microstructure of two zinc phosphate cement formulations in order to investigate the role of liquid/solid ratio and composition of powder component, on the developed porosity and, consequently, on compressive strength.

METHODS

X-ray powder diffraction with the Rietveld method was used to study the phase composition of zinc oxide powder and cements. Powder component and cement microstructure were investigated with scanning electron microscopy. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and microfocus X-ray computed tomography (XmCT) were together employed to characterize porosity and microstructure of dental cements. Compressive strength tests were performed to evaluate their mechanical performance.

RESULTS

The beneficial effects obtained by the addition of Al, Mg and B to modulate powder reactivity were mitigated by the crystallization of a Zn aluminate phase not involved in the cement setting reaction. Both cements showed spherical pores with a bimodal distribution at the micro/nano-scale. Pores, containing a low density gel-like phase, developed through segregation of liquid during setting. Increasing liquid/solid ratio from 0.378 to 0.571, increased both SANS and XmCT-derived specific surface area (by 56% and 22%, respectively), porosity (XmCT-derived porosity increased from 3.8% to 5.2%), the relative fraction of large pores ≥50μm, decreased compressive strength from 50±3MPa to 39±3MPa, and favored microstructural and compositional inhomogeneities.

SIGNIFICANCE

Explain aspects of powder design affecting the setting reaction and, in turn, cement performance, to help in optimizing cement formulation. The mechanism behind development of porosity and specific surface area explains mechanical performance, and processes such as erosion and fluoride release/uptake.

Zinc phosphate as versatile material for potential biomedical applications Part 1

Synthetic alpha - and beta -Hopeite, two polymorphs of zinc phosphate tetrahydrates (ZPT) have been synthesized by hydrothermal crystallization from aqueous solution at 20 degrees C and 90 degrees C respectively. Aside from their sub-title crystallographic differences originating from a unique hydrogen bonding pattern, their thermodynamic interrelation has been thoroughfully investigated by means of X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), combined with thermogravimetry (TGA-MS). Using a new heterogeneous step-reaction approach, the kinetics of dehydration of the two forms of ZPT was studied and their corresponding transition temperature determined. Low temperature DRIFT, FT-Raman and (1)H, (31)P MAS-NMR reveal an oriented distortion of the zinc phosphate tetrahedra, due to a characteristic hydrogen bonding pattern and in accordance with the molecular tetrahedral linkage scheme of the phosphate groups. Biogenic Hydroxyapatite (HAP) and one of its metastable precursors, a calcium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) or Brushite were also obtained and used to underline the resulting variations of chemical reactivity in zinc phosphates.
