Effects of Surface-Etching Systems on the Shear Bond Strength of Dual-Polymerized Resin Cement and Zirconia

Adhesion of zirconia is difficult; thus, etching agents using several different methods are being developed. We investigated the effects of surface treatment with commercially available etching agents on the bond strength between zirconia and resin cement and compared them with those achieved using air abrasion alone. We used 100 zirconia blocks, of which 20 blocks remained untreated, 20 blocks were sandblasted, and 60 blocks were acid-etched using three different zirconia-etching systems: Zircos-E etching (strong-acid etching), smart etching (acid etching after air abrasion), and cloud etching (acid etching under a hot stream). Each group was subjected to a bonding procedure with dual-polymerized resin cement, and then 50 specimens were thermocycled. The shear bond strengths between the resin cement and zirconia before and after the thermocycling were evaluated. We observed that in the groups that did not undergo thermocycling, specimens surface-treated with solution did not show a significant increase in shear bond strength compared to the sandblasted specimens (p > 0.05). Among the thermocycled groups, the smart-etched specimens showed the highest shear bond strength. In the short term, various etching agents did not show a significant increase in bond strength compared to sandblasting alone, but in the long term, smart etching showed stability in bond strength (p < 0.05).

A scoping review of the influence of clinical contaminants on bond strength in direct adhesive restorative procedures

OBJECTIVE

Clinical contamination during direct adhesive restorative procedures can affect various adhesive interfaces differently and contribute to bulk failure of the restorations. This review aims to summarise the current knowledge on the influence of a variety of clinical contaminants on the bond strength at various adhesive interfaces during adhesive restorative procedures and identify gaps in the literature for future research.

DATA AND SOURCES

An electronic database search was performed in PubMed and EMBASE to identify articles that investigated the influence of contaminants on direct restorative bonding procedures. A data-charting form was developed by two researchers to capture the key characteristics of each eligible study.

STUDY SELECTION

The initial search yielded 1,428 articles. Fifty-seven articles published between 1 Jan 2007 and 25 Oct 2023 were included in the final review. Thirty-three of the articles examined the influence of saliva contamination, twelve articles examined the influence of blood contamination, and twenty-five articles examined the influence of other contaminants.

CONCLUSION

Saliva contamination exerted less influence on the decrease in bond strength when self-etch systems were used, compared to when etch-and-rinse systems were used. Blood contamination adversely affected the bond strength at the interface between resin composite and dentine, and resin composite and resin-modified glass ionomer cement. Treating contaminated surfaces with water spray for 10-30 s followed by air drying could be effective in recovering bond strength following saliva and blood contamination.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

This scoping review provides a valuable overview of the range of potential clinical contaminants that can influence the bond strength between different interfaces in direct adhesive restorative procedures. Additionally, it identifies potential decontamination protocols that can be followed to restore and enhance bond strength.

The Effect of Mechanical Alteration on Repair Bond Strength of S-PRG-Filler-Based Resin Composite Materials

This study investigates the impact of mechanical alteration on resin composite surfaces and its subsequent effect on repair bond strength. A total of 100 resin composite disks were prepared and were allocated for 24 h or 1 year of artificial aging. Specimens were embedded in epoxy resin, and the composite surfaces were mechanically altered using either diamond burs or air abrasion with aluminum oxide or glass beads. A universal bonding material was applied and a 2 mm circular and 3 mm high repair composite cylinder were prepared using a Teflon mold. Then, the specimens were tested for their shear bond strength, and the de-bonded specimens were observed under a scanning electron microscope to determine the failure pattern. SPSS 26.0 statistical software was used to analyze the data. Two-way ANOVA showed a statistically significant effect of mechanical alteration and aging on the shear bond strength of S-PRG-filler-based resin composite (p < 0.05). Surface modification with a fine diamond bur showed a significantly higher bond strength in both 24-h- and 1-year-aged specimens. Surface modification with alumina significantly increased the bond strength of 1-year-aged specimens; however, it was statistically insignificant for 24 h-aged specimens. Mechanical alteration with a fine diamond bur and 50-micron alumina can improve the repair bond strength of the composite.

The effect of orthodontic bracket base shape on shear bond strength to human enamel, an in vitro study

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro effect of orthodontic bracket base shape on shear bond strength (SBS) to human enamel and assess the nature of debonding fractures using the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI). Orthodontic brackets with different-shaped bases (flower, heart, rectangle) were bonded to 120 extracted human third molars. Shear bond strength was measured using a Servohydraulic Test System at 24 h and 2 months after bonding. Adhesive Remnant Index scores were evaluated under 10x magnification to assess the amount of resin left on the tooth. The control bracket (rectangular base shape) had the highest mean SBS (26.8 ± 8.2 megapascals [MPa]), and significantly differed from the flower (17.2 ± 4.4 MPa) and heart (18.9 ± 3.5 MPa) base shapes (p < 0.001). The mean SBS between debonding times at 24 h (21.5 ± 7.4 MPa) and 2 months (20.4 ± 6.7 MPa) were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Analysis of ARI scores showed a significant difference between flower-24 h versus heart-2 months (p = 0.039), flower-24 h versus heart-24 h (p = 0.004), and control-2 months versus heart-24 h (p = 0.015). Bracket base shape influenced SBS, with the rectangular base shape having a higher mean SBS compared to flower and heart base shapes. Variations in ARI scores occurred based on bracket shape and were of a mixed adhesive-cohesive nature. All bracket shapes had bond strengths above the clinically acceptable range of 6-8 MPa, and may thus provide adequate SBS in a clinical situation.

Influence of Immediate Dentin Sealing on Bond Strength of Resin-Based CAD/CAM Restoratives to Dentin: A Systematic Review of In Vitro Studies

Immediate dentin sealing (IDS) is a method of improving the bond strength of indirect dental restorative materials to dentin and belongs to the biomimetic protocols of contemporary dentistry. The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the effect of IDS on the bond strength of resin-based CAD/CAM materials to dentin. PubMed and MEDLINE, Scopus, and the Web of Science were searched by two individual researchers, namely for studies that have been published in English between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2023 in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The inclusion criteria encompassed articles related to in vitro studies, measuring the bond strength through microtensile bond strength (μ-TBS), micro-shear bond strength (μ-SBS), tensile bond strength (TBS) or shear bond strength (SBS) tests after the use of the IDS technique. The included restorative materials comprised resin-based CAD/CAM materials bonded to dentin. A total of 1821 studies were identified, of which 7 met the inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis was not deemed appropriate due to the high level of diversity inthe publications and techniques. The use of IDS yielded higher bond strength outcomesin various experimental conditions and resin-based CAD/CAM materials. Overall, IDS in CAD/CAM restorations may contribute to better clinical outcomesand improved restoration longevity due to this property.

Reliability of an Innovative Slab Shear versus Microtensile Bond Strength Test: Mechanical and Finite Element Analysis

OBJECTIVE

 The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of slab shear bond strength test (Slab_SBS) versus the microtensile in evaluation of the bond strength of different substrates.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 Forty-eight extracted caries-free human third molars were utilized for teeth specimens' preparation. After flattening of all molars' occlusal table, the specimens were divided into two groups based on the type of utilized restorative material: nanohybrid resin composite and resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI). Each group was further subdivided into three subgroups according to the subsequently applied bond strength test and specimen width; microtensile bond strength test (μTBS), Slab_SBS [2 mm] and Slab_SBS [3 mm]. Both testing methods were additionally applied on CAD/CAM specimens, nanohybrid resin composite blocks (composite-to-composite), and ceramic blocks (ceramic-to-ceramic). CAD/CAM specimens were prepared and cemented and then sectioned and subdivided as followed for teeth specimens' preparation. Pretest failures (PTF), bond strength, and failure mode of each specimen were recorded. Representative three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) models were developed to simulate μTBS and Slab_SBS specimens. Data were statistically analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk test and Weibull analysis.

RESULTS

 Pretest failures were only noted in the μTBS subgroups. Slab_SBS provided comparable bond strength to the μTBS of all substrates with adhesive mode of failure.

CONCLUSION

 Slab_SBS is easier to prepare with consistent and predictable outcome with no pretest failures during specimen preparation and better stress distribution.

Pushout Bond Strength in Coronal Dentin: A Standardization Approach in Comparison to Shear Bond Strength

To find an alternative that is closer to clinical reality in terms of cavity geometry and configuration factor, this study investigated the pushout test on in vitro adhesive testing to coronal dentin when compared to the established shear test, both in a standardized approach. For a feasible comparison between both tests, the pushout specimen was adjusted in thickness (1.03 ± 0.05 mm) and cavity diameter (1.42 ± 0.03 mm) to receive a bonding area (4.63 ± 0.26 mm2) that matches that of the shear test (4.57 ± 0.13 mm2). Though, the configuration factor between both tests differs largely (pushout 1.5 ± 0.08; shear bond 0.20 ± 0.01). The bond strength of five different adhesives (n = 20) was investigated for both tests. The pushout test registered a high number of invalid measurements (30%) due to concomitant dentin fracture during testing. In contrast to the shear test, the pushout test failed to discriminate between different adhesives (p = 0.367). Both tests differed largely from each other when comparing adhesive groups. When solely looking at the valid specimens, Weibull modulus reached higher values in the pushout approach. Conclusively, the pushout test in this specific setup does not distinguish as precisely as the shear bond test between different adhesives and needs adaption to be routinely applied in adhesive dentistry.

Argon Plasma Treatment Effects on the Micro-Shear Bond Strength of Lithium Disilicate with Dental Resin Cements

The low bond strength of lithium disilicate (LD) ceramics to dental resin cements remains a critical issue for dental applications because it leads to frequent replacement and causes tooth tissue destruction and consumption. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of atmospheric non-thermal argon plasma (NTP) treatment on LD to improve its micro-shear bond strength (μSBS) with dental resin cements because LD mostly experiences shear stress for its commonly used dental applications as crowns or veneers. Argon plasma treatment was performed on hydrofluoric (HF) acid-etched LD surfaces, and then commercial resin cements were subsequently applied to the treated LD surfaces. The plasma treatment significantly reduced the water contact angle of the LD surface to less than 10° without changing the surface morphology. The μSBS test was performed with cement-bonded LD samples after 24 h and 30 days, as well as after 1000 cycles of thermal cycling. The test results show that, as compared with the untreated controls, 300 s of plasma treatment significantly improved the LD-resin cement bond strength by 59.1%. After 30 days of storage in DI water and 1000 cycles of thermal cycling, the plasma-treated LD samples show 84.2% and 44.8% higher bond strengths as compared to the control samples, respectively. The plasma treatment effect on LD surfaces diminished rapidly as the bond strength decreased to 25.5 MPa after aging in the air for 1 day prior to primer and cement application, suggesting that primers should be applied to the LD surfaces immediately after the plasma treatment. These results demonstrate that, when applied with caution, plasma treatment can activate LD surfaces and significantly improve the SBS of LD with dental resin cements in both short-term and long-term periods.

Comparison of Shear Bond Strength and Microleakage between Activa™ Bioactive Restorative™ and Bulk-Fill Composites-An In Vitro Study

Bioactive materials have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional restorative materials as part of more conservative dentistry. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength (SBS) and microleakage of a new bioactive restorative material, two bulk-fill restorative composites, and a conventional composite at 24 h, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks. Three hundred and sixty molars and premolars were divided into four groups: ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE Restorative™, Filtek™ Bulk-Fill Restorative Composite, Tetric^® N-Ceram Bulk-Fill Composite, and G-aenial^® Composite. The normality of the data was determined with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, then the two-way ANOVA and Fisher's test were used for analyzing SBS data, and the Kruskal-Wallis and DSCF tests were conducted to analyze the microleakage. In the SBS test, there were no statistically significant differences between materials (p = 0.587), and the relation between material and time (p = 0.467), time points showed statistically significant differences (p = 0.016). As for the microleakage, statistically significant differences were found for all three time periods (p < 0.05), showing the conventional composite to have the lowest microleakage, followed by the bioactive material, and lastly the two bulk-fill composites. In conclusion, the new bioactive material has similar evaluated properties to bulk-fill composites (bond strength) and conventional composites (bond strength and microleakage) and can be used as an alternative restorative material.

The Influence of Hydrofluoric Acid Temperature and Application Technique on Ceramic Surface Texture and Shear Bond Strength of an Adhesive Cement

All-ceramic restorations are the foundation of modern esthetic dentistry. Clinical approaches for preparation, durability, aesthetics, and repair have been reformed by the idea of adhesive dentistry. The aim of the study and the objective question was to evaluate the impact of heated hydrofluoric acid pretreatment and the application technique's influence on the surface morphology and roughness of leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic materials (IPS Empress CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent), which is fundamental for understanding the adhesive cementation process. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the effectiveness of the two HF (Yellow Porcelain Etch, Cerkamed) application techniques and the HF's temperature impact on the surface topography of the ceramic. Based on surface conditioning methods, the adhesive cement (Panavia V5, Kuraray Noritake Dental Inc., Tokyo, Japan) was applied to the conditioned ceramic samples and light-cured. Shear bond strength values were correlated with the micro-retentive surface texture of the ceramic. With universal testing equipment at a 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed, SBS values between the resin cement and the ceramic material were assessed until failure. Analyzing the fractured surfaces of the specimens by digital microscopy, the failure modes were divided into three categories: adhesive, cohesive, and mixed failure. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to statistically analyze the collected data. The results show that alternative treatment methods affected the material's surface characteristics and have an influence on the shear bond strength.

Effect of Different Surface Treatments on Repair Bond Strength of CAD/CAM Resin-Matrix Ceramics

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of different surface treatment methods on the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) of resin-matrix ceramic (RMC) blocks repaired with resin composite. Three different prefabricated RMC blocks including Lava Ultimate (LU), Grandio Blocs (GB), and Shofu Block HC (HC) were thermo-cycled and divided into five surface treatment groups: Control (C), bur grinding (G), airborne particle abrasion (APA), Er,Cr:YSGG laser irritation (LI), and APA combined with LI (APA+LI). After surface treatments, topographic alterations were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Then, Universal Adhesive (Single Bond Universal) was applied and repair was simulated with nanohybrid composite (Grandio SO). Bonded specimens were cut into 1 mm2 sized beams (n = 16) and a μTBS test was conducted by using a universal test machine. Fracture types were evaluated by using a stereomicroscope. The bond- strength data was evaluated by two-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test (α = 0.05). The μTBS values were significantly affected by the surface treatment variable and the interaction terms of the variables (p ≤ 0.001). However, no significant effect of RMC type was detected (p > 0.05). Among all materials, GBAPA+LI indicated the highest µTBS value. Except for the GBC, all surface treatments showed clinically acceptable bond-strength values. However, the surface treatments applied to GB and LU before the repair processes increased the repair bond-strength values while causing a negative effect for HC. In addition, LI and APA+LI can be applied as an alternative route compared to other procedures recommended by the manufacturer for surface preparation in intraoral RMC repair.

To Compare and Evaluate the Shear Bond Strength of Sixth- and Seventh-generation Bonding Agents

Aim

To compare and evaluate the shear bond strength of sixth and seventh-generation dentin bonding agents.

Materials and methods

Around 75 extracted permanent mandibular premolars were selected and assigned into two groups. The samples were cleaned, cavities were prepared, and the bonding agent was applied and stored in distilled water for 24 hours. Shear bond strength testing was done using a universal testing machine at the crosshead speed of 1 mm/minute. Data were analyzed statistically by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and paired test.

Results

The greatest mean shear bond strength to dentin was exhibited by the sixth-generation dentin bonding agent due to the solvent present, which has a low concentration and low hydrophilicity than the seventh-generation.

Conclusion

Sixth-generation adhesives showed significantly higher mean shear bond strength to dentin than seventh-generation adhesives.

Clinical significance

Bond strength values are gross assessing tools for evaluating the efficacy of restorative bonding materials to dentin. And as the shear bond strength is less technique sensitive to perform, it will highlight the strength at the bonded interface.

Effect of firing temperature on the interface between 3Y-TZP zirconia and porcelain

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to clarify the porcelain firing temperature conditions that give strongest bonding strength of porcelain to zirconia to manufacture all-ceramic fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) with excellent long-term stability.

METHODS

Opaque porcelain samples (8.0 × 3.0 × 1.2 mm) were placed in the center of zirconia plates (25.0 × 3.0 × 0.5 mm) and fired at temperatures of 950°C, 1,050°C, 1,100°C, and 1,150°C. Schwickerath crack initiation tests, elemental analyses, and morphological changes of the samples were compared.

RESULTS

There was no difference in the bonding strength among all the groups of porcelain fired at different temperatures. Elemental analysis of Si and O₂ at the interface between the zirconia and porcelain were observed in the 950°C, 1,050°C, and 1,100°C groups. No silicon was found in the 1,150°C group by elemental analysis, and the zirconia plate where the porcelain sample was placed had irregular shape changes.

CONCLUSION

It is suggested that silicon is also involved in chemical bonds due to firing at high temperatures.

Simulating the Intraoral Aging of Dental Bonding Agents: A Narrative Review

Despite their popularity, resin composite restorations fail earlier and at higher rates than comparable amalgam restorations. One of the reasons for these rates of failure are the properties of current dental bonding agents. Modern bonding agents are vulnerable to gradual chemical and mechanical degradation from a number of avenues such as daily use in chewing, catalytic hydrolysis facilitated by salivary or bacterial enzymes, and thermal fluctuations. These stressors have been found to work synergistically, all contributing to the deterioration and eventual failure of the hybrid layer. Due to the expense and difficulty in conducting in vivo experiments, in vitro protocols meant to accurately simulate the oral environment’s stressors are important in the development of bonding agents and materials that are more resistant to these processes of degradation. This narrative review serves to summarize the currently employed methods of aging dental materials and critically appraise them in the context of our knowledge of the oral environment’s parameters.

Effect of Argon Plasma Surface Treatment on Repair of Resin Composite Aged Two Years

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effect of argon plasma treatment (PLA) when combined with sandblasting (SAN), silanization (SIL), and hydrophobic bonding resin (HBR) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of a two-year water-aged resin composite bonded to a newly placed composite after 24 hours and one year of water-storage.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Thirty-six light-cured composite plates (20mm x 20mm x 4mm thick) were obtained and stored at 37°C in distilled water for 2 years. These aged plates were distributed into 6 groups (n=6) according to the surface treatment: no treatment (Negative Control); SAN+SIL+HBR (Positive Control); SAN+PLA+SIL+HBR; PLA+ SIL+HBR; PLA+SIL; PLA+HBR. Fresh resin composite cylinders were built up using silicone molds (hole: 1.5 mm high x 1.5 mm diameter) positioned over the aged plates. Half of the SBS samples were stored in distilled water for 24 hours and loaded until failure, while the other half were stored for 1 year before being tested. Data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Tukey Test (preset alpha of 0.05).

RESULTS

Positive Control, SAN+PLA+SIL+HBR and PLA+SIL+HBR groups presented higher SBS means at the 24 hour evaluation. After 1 year of water storage, all groups demonstrated significant SBS reduction, with the SAN+PLA+SIL+HBR group presenting the highest SBS.

CONCLUSIONS

Resin plasma treatment in combination with other surface treatments can improve the SBS of composite repairs after one year of water storage. The SBS of the composite repair was not stable over time regardless of the surface treatment.

[Laboratory methods for measuring adhesive bond strength between restoration materials and hard tooth tissues]

THE AIM OF THE STUDY

Was to review laboratory methods measuring the bond strength of adhesive dental materials to hard tooth tissues. The paper points out the impact of test conditions on the measured strength of adhesive bond to dentine and enamel. Various in vitro studies are discussed, including the analyses of fracture surfaces and test-induced stresses. These studies are found to be helpful to identify particularities, advantages, and limitations of each approach. We present a systematic picture of available bond-strength data aimed at revealing general trends in adhesive performance. No clear superiority of any particular method for determining the bond strength between restoration materials and tooth tissues can be identified on the basis of reviewed literature. Therefore, no single universal approach can be at present proposed for determining the strength of adhesive bond.

The effect of diabetes mellitus on the shear bond strength of composite resin to dentin and enamel

Diabetes mellitus might be linked to the deterioration of certain physical properties of dentin and enamel. This study aimed to determine the effect of two types of diabetes on the shear bond strength of enamel and dentin, by using the single bond universal bonding system. Sixty specimens [from 15 teeth; 5 from each group-non-diabetic (ND), Diabetic type I (D1), and Diabetic type II (D2)], were prepared with equal amounts of dentin (n = 5) and enamel (n = 5). Enamel specimens (E20) were etched with 37% phosphoric acid, for 20 s, and dentin specimens (D15) were etched for 15 s. A standard shear bond strength test was performed on all specimens. Their failure modes were also studied under a scanning electron microscope, and the data were analyzed by using ANOVA and Post Hoc Tukey's test (a = 0.050). For the enamel groups, significant differences were only noticed between the ND and D1 (P < 0.050) groups, and between the ND and D2 (P < 0.050) groups. In the dentin groups, there was a significant difference only between the ND and D1 (P < 0.050) groups. The micrographs showed that the ND group had the highest number of specimens with cohesive failure and D1 had the highest number of specimens with adhesive failure. It can be concluded that both types of diabetes reduce the shear bond strength of composite resin on dentin and enamel. However, it seems that the negative effect of diabetes on shear bond strength of dental composite resin is more drastic in individuals with type I diabetes as compared with type II.

Adhesion of veneering porcelain to cobalt-chromium dental alloys processed with casting, milling, and additive manufacturing methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing (AM) technologies provide an alternative to conventional casting and milling procedures in fabricating metal-ceramic dental prostheses. However, the quality of porcelain bond strength to the SLM AM cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) metal framework of a dental restoration is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to identify in vitro studies that reported the porcelain bond strength to SLM AM Co-Cr dental metal alloys and compare the porcelain bond strength values to cast, milled, and additively manufactured Co-Cr dental alloys.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An electronic systematic review was performed in different databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, World of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus. A manual search was also conducted. Studies that reported the porcelain bond strength to SLM Co-Cr metal alloys and in the English language were included. Two investigators evaluated the quality assessment of the studies by applying the JBI critical appraisal checklist for quasi-experimental studies (nonrandomized experimental studies). A third investigator was consulted to resolve lack of consensus. Two subgroups were created based on the test used, 3-point bend and shear bond strength tests. The porcelain bond strength of cast, milled, and AM Co-Cr dental alloys were compared. The I2 statistic and its associated P value were used to assess the heterogeneity between studies. The Eger test was used for determining significance of the funnel pots.

RESULTS

A total of 216 studies were collected from the electronic and manual searches. After independently evaluating the titles and abstracts by the reviewers, 26 articles were identified. Three of these were excluded after full-text revision. The porcelain bond strength comparison between the cast and AM alloys for the 3-point bend subgroup revealed a significant result for overall effect (P<.001) favoring the SLM method with considerable heterogeneity (I2=83%, P<.001). Furthermore, the porcelain bond strength comparison between cast and milled alloys for the shear bond strength subgroup revealed a significant test for overall effect (P=.04) favoring milled procedures with a nonsignificant unimportant heterogeneity (I2= 0%, P<.47) and for the 3-point bend subgroup (P<.001) favoring milled specimens with a significant considerable heterogeneity (I2=79%, P<.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The metal manufacturing method had no effect on the porcelain bond strength to Co-Cr dental metal alloys.

Effects of different surface treatments and adhesive self-etch functional monomers on the repair of bulk fill composites: A randomised controlled study

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effect of different adhesive protocols on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and integrity of the repaired bulk fill composite interface.

METHODS

Two hundred and seventy composite blocks made of bulk fill composites of different viscosity were randomly assigned to 18 surface conditioning groups (n = 15/group). The universal adhesive systems used were Heliobond™, Tokuyama bond force II™ and Scotchbond Universal™. A nanohybrid resin composite was applied as the repair material. Negative and positive control groups were included. Stick shape specimens of each group were subjected to μTBS testing. Representative samples from all test groups were subjected to microscopic, profilometric and SEM examination to determine their mode of failure. The data were analysed statistically using two-way ANOVA test, Tukey's test and the independent t-test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The mean μTBS of all test groups ranged between 28.5 and 46.8 MPa and varied with the type of adhesive system employed. Significantly highest μTBS values were obtained when Tokuyama bond force II™ and Scotchbond Universal™ adhesives were used (p < 0.01) which were comparable to the coherent strength of the bulk fill resin composite in the positive control groups (p > 0.05). The viscosity of the bulk fill composite did not significantly influence repair bond strength. The microscopy and SEM examination of the failed interfaces revealed a mixture of adhesive and cohesive failures.

CONCLUSIONS

Under the tested conditions, significantly greater μTBS of repaired bulk fill composite was achieved when the substrate surface was treated with adhesive systems containing a functional monomer.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Eff ;ecting a repair of a bulk fill resin composite restoration with the application of a functional monomer containing adhesive system, such as Tokuyama Bond Force II™ or Scotchbond Universal™, would seem to enhance the interfacial bond strength and integrity of the repaired resin composite interface.

Flexural test as an alternative to tensile test for bond strength of resin cement to zirconia

OBJECTIVE

There has been a great many technical difficulties in measuring the bond strengths between brittle dental substrates and materials, especially in preparing specimens. This study evaluated the validity of the relatively easy flexural bond strength (FBS) test in measuring bond strength of resin cement to zirconia as an alternative to the cumbersome tensile bond strength (TBS) and micro-tensile bond strength (MTBS) tests.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The FBS and TBS of resin cement to zirconia were measured experimentally after three surface treatments on a zirconia ceramic: air abrasion only (A), conditioning with Single Bond Universal (U) after air abrasion, and conditioning with Z-Prime Plus (Z) after air abrasion. The data were investigated using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Weibull statistics, and a theoretical simulation.

RESULTS

In both the FBS and TBS tests, the experimental data were consistent and quantitatively similar. First, according to ANOVA, the U group showed the highest bond strengths in both tests, followed by the Z group and the A group. In each surface treatment group, the FBS was always higher than the TBS. Second, the Weibull fitting showed the same order of strength in both tests (A < Z < U) and in all surface treatment groups (FBS > TBS). Third, the theoretical ratios calculated from the Weibull moduli agreed well with the experimental ratios of the FBS to the TBS.

CONCLUSION

The FBS test can be an alternative to the TBS and MTBS tests in measuring the bond strength of brittle resin cement to zirconia.

Optimizing the fitting-surface preparation of zirconia restorations for bonding to dentin

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to identify the relative strengths and weaknesses of different interfaces within the multilayer structure of a zirconia crown restoration when applying different surface pretreatments. These include the influence on shear strengths of different air abrasion protocols, glaze-on techniques, zirconia primers and self-adhesive cements for either the complex structure: zirconia / self adhesive resin composite cement (RCC) / bovine dentin substrate (part 1) or the RCC / zirconia substrate (part 2).

METHODS

In Part 1, zirconia discs, pretreated by either glaze-on techniques or air abrasion using Rocatec™ Soft, were bonded to bovine dentin substrates with different self-adhesive RCCs. In Part 2, steel-cylinders were bonded to zirconia cuboid substrates, pretreated by either different protocols for air-abrasion or a glaze-on-technique, with different self-adhesive RCCs. Shear bond strengths (SBS) were measured for all interfacial combinations.

RESULTS

In part 1, application of air abrasion using Rocatec™ Soft significantly increased the SBS of zirconia to dentin compared to control specimens without pretreatment, while glaze-on techniques did not increase the SBS. Pretreatment of zirconia surfaces with two primers (either Clearfil Ceramic Primer, or Monobond S) showed significantly higher SBS than the controls. Cementations with RelyX Unicem 2 Automix showed significantly higher SBS than with MaxCem Elite. In Part 2, all air abrasion protocols increased the SBS, but there was no significant difference between these protocols. Again the glaze-on technique did not increase SBS. A significant difference between the two RCCs was again observed. When zirconia substrates were air abraded, regardless of which protocol was applied, the highest SBS were obtained by Calibra with P&B active followed by Panavia with or without Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus. Calibra applied without P&B active exhibited the lowest SBS.

SIGNIFICANCE

Pretreatment of zirconia substrates using air abrasion and/or ceramic primers increased the SBS of the zirconia cement interface. For all tested glaze-on treatments, in our experimental setting no effect was observed.

Single-component orthodontic adhesives: comparison of the clinical and in vitro performance

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the clinical and in vitro performance of single-component orthodontic adhesives under metal brackets.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Bimaxillary orthodontic treatment was required for sixty patients and 60 premolar teeth were divided into three groups (n: 20). The single-component orthodontic adhesives Biofix and GC Ortho Connect (GC) that did not require primers were compared to the control group using Transbond XT, which was applied with a primer. For each patient, total bonding time was measured. The Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI_(Bracket)) score was noted over 12 months. In vitro tests were used to evaluate specimens, shear bond strength (SBS), ARI_(Bracket), and Enamel Surface Index (ESI). After in vitro debonding, the enamel surface and bracket base were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).

RESULTS

Clinical failure rate with primer was 9.0%, while it was 8.0 and 10.0 for GC and Biofix, respectively. The mean in vitro SBS values of the Biofix, GC, and Transbond XT groups were 8.21, 8.07, and 7.37 MPa, respectively. There were no statistically differences in clinical failure (p = 0.160) and SBS values (p = 0.158). Mean differences in bond-up time per jaw were 9.65, 10.51, and 11.97 min, which were statistically significant (p = 0.0001).

CONCLUSION

Single-component adhesives had acceptable SBS values and enamel effects according to SEM-EDX analysis. Clinically, bonding failure was not shown statistically inferior to bonding with primer. There was also a significant difference in bond-up times.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Considering an intensely working clinic with bonding processes for at least two jaws per day, this means a saving of the chair time of 1 patient per week. However, better saliva contamination and moisture control with lack of the primer stage and, thereby, an acceptable bracket failure rate will bring clinically significant results with less chair time for clinicians.

Impact of graphene oxide and silver diamine fluoride in comparison to photodynamic therapy on bond integrity and microleakage scores of resin modified glass ionomer cement to demineralized dentin

AIM

To evaluate the impact of graphene oxide (GO) and silver diammine fluoride (SDF) in comparison to photodynamic therapy (PDT) on adhesive bond integrity and microleakage scores of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) to demineralized dentin.

METHODS

80 non-carious and atraumatic third molars were mounted inside the segments of polyvinyl pipes. Exposure, homogenization, and polishing of dentinal tubules was performed. 20 specimens were left unconditioned and classified a group 4. Exposure of acetic acid was done to 60 specimens and randomly allocated into 3 groups. Group 1 specimens were treated with 0.25 % GO; group 2 specimens were treated with 3.8 % SDF; and group 3 specimens were exposed to PDT. The bonding of all samples to RMGIC was performed by light curing and universal testing machine was utilized for testing shear bond strength (SBS). For failure modes, an optical microscope at 40x magnification was used to observe the debonded interfaces. For microleakage, all the specimens were submerged in 2% methylene blue for 1 day and observed under a digital microscope. The post hoc Tukey and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to examine SBS. A p-value of ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

Group 2 showed the highest bond strength (3.8 % SDF + RMGIC + DD - 15.27 ± 2.19 MPa). Groups 1 (0.25 % GO + RMGIC + DD - 14.11 ± 3.82) and 2 showed comparable results of SBS, which was significantly higher when compared with other research groups (p < 0.05). According to the post hoc Tukey test, the SBS scores of treatment groups exhibited statistically significant values as compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Group 2 samples showed the least microleakage mean score (0.8 ± 0.42), followed by group 1 specimens (1.02 ± 0.88). The comparable microleakage mean scores were demonstrated by the samples in group 1 and 2 (p < 0.01). According to one-way ANOVA, a significant difference was observed in microleakage scores among experimental groups (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

Improved bond strength and marginal microleakage scores were demonstrated by the demineralized dentin treated with 0.25 % graphene oxide and 3.8 % silver diamine fluoride when bonded to resin-modified glass ionomer cement. The application of methylene blue photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy undermined the adhesive bond strength applied on demineralized dentin.

Surface treatment of RMGIC to composite resin using different photosensitizers and lasers: A bond assessment of closed Sandwich restoration

AIM

The aim of present study was to assess and compare different conditioning methods (laser, PDT and conventional) on shear bond strength (SBS) of resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) bonded to composite (sandwich technique).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Fifty specimens were prepared from RMGIC and were packed in a teflon mould placed on glass slab. Through each of the glass slab the cement was light cured for 20 s. Now samples were randomly allocated into five groups (n = 10) according to pre-treatment protocols. In group 1 RMGIC were conditioned with MBP using PDT, Samples in group 2 treated with Er,Cr:YSGG (ECYL), group 3 pre-treated with Nd:YAG laser (NYL), samples in group 4 surface conditioned with air abrasion (AA) and group 5 conditioned with 37 % phosphoric acid (PA). Specimens after conditioning were rinsed with distilled water. Adhesive Adper Single Bond 2 was applied on treated surface of RMGIC and cured. Teflon mold was utilized to hold the composite Filtek Z250 in an incremental technique. For SBS testing all specimens were placed under shear knife edge at 1 K N at a speed of 0.5mm2 until bond failure. Optical microscope was used to evaluate failure pattern at 10x magnification. The data of SBS in Megapascal were subjected to statistical test. Analysis of variance was followed by Post hoc test with level of significance at 5 %.

RESULT

The maximum SBS was found in group 5 RMGIC conditioned with 37 % PA (16.45 ± 0.32 MPa). Whereas, group 1 (MBP, PDT) demonstrated significantly lower bond integrity (9.82 ± 1.08 MPa) compared to all experimental groups. Bond integrity of RMGIC surface treated with MBP, PDT (9.82 ± 1.08 MPa), group 3 lased with NYL (11.47 ± 0.53 MPa) and samples in group 4 conditioned with AA (11.23 ± 0.47 MPa) were comparable (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

ECYL has a potential to be used for conditioning of RMGIC prior to composite restoration (sandwich technique). MBP at 100 mg/L deteriorates SBS of composite to RMGIC.

The microtensile bond strength test: Its historical background and application to bond testing

Microtensile bond strength (μTBS) test was introduced in 1994. Since then, it has been utilized profoundly across many bond strength testing laboratories, making it currently one of the most standard and versatile bond strength test. Although it is a static and strength-based method, together with the morphological and spectroscopic investigations, it has been contributing immensely in the advancement of dentin adhesive systems. μTBS test has a greater discriminative capability than the traditional macro-shear bond test. During the early stage of its development, the authors predicted that this testing method would enable evaluation of the adhesive performances of resins to excavated carious or sclerotic dentin and the regional bond strengths of various portions of the cavity. In addition, they also stated the possibility of comparing the long-term stability of resin adhesion at various portions of the cavity walls on teeth extracted at various times after insertion of bonded restorations. In this review, we discussed the historical background, inception and the application of the μTBS test and proposed directions for further improvement of this testing method.

Influence of various antioxidants on micro-shear bond strength of resin composite to bleached enamel

OBJECTIVE

Teeth bleaching causes an immediate decrease in resin composite bonding ability. This study aimed to investigate the influence of various antioxidants on resin composite bond strength to bleached enamel.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred and ten human maxillary incisors were used. A negative control (group A) (n = 10) was assigned (no bleaching-no antioxidant). The remaining teeth were divided into two groups (n = 50) according to the bleaching agent used: group B (40% hydrogen peroxide) and group C (35% carbamide peroxide). Both groups were subdivided into five subgroups (n = 10). A positive control subgroup (no antioxidant) and other four subgroups according to the antioxidant solution used (10% sodium ascorbate, 10% grape seed extract, 10% green tea extract, and 5% alpha-lipoic acid). After resin composite building, the micro-shear bond strength test was performed. Fracture analysis was examined using a stereomicroscope. Statistical analysis was performed using a two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's HSD post hoc test.

RESULTS

Bond strength significantly decreased after bleaching and there was no significant difference between bleaching agents (P < .0848). Except for alpha-lipoic acid subgroups, the other antioxidants subgroups revealed significantly higher bond strengths than bleached control subgroups (P < .0001).

CONCLUSION

All antioxidants used except alpha-lipoic acid were effective in the reversal of compromised bonding after bleaching.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Immediate bonding procedures after bleaching are requisite when bleaching fails to treat teeth discoloration and the direct composite veneer is considered, also when shades of old composite restorations become mismatched after bleaching and should be replaced. Immediate reestablishment of resin bond strengths after bleaching can be achieved by using several antioxidants without the need for delay.

Chemical composition, surface roughness, and ceramic bond strength of additively manufactured cobalt-chromium dental alloys

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing (AM) technology is a current option to fabricate cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) metal frameworks for dental prostheses. However, the Co-Cr alloy composition, surface roughness, and ceramic bond strength values that SLM metals can obtain are not well-defined.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the chemical composition, surface roughness, and ceramic shear bond strength of the milled and SLM Co-Cr dental alloys.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 50 disks of 5 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness were fabricated by using subtractive (control group) and AM with each of following SLM providers: SLM-1 (EOS), SLM-2 (3D systems), and SLM-3 (Concept Laser). The milled disks were airborne-particle abraded with 100-μm aluminum oxide particles. All the specimens were cleaned before surface roughness (Ra), weight (Wt%), and atomic (At%) percentages were analyzed. Three-dimensional profilometry was used to analyze the topographical properties of the surface parameters Ra (mean surface roughness). The chemical composition of Co-Cr alloy specimens was determined by using energy dispersive X-ray (EDAX) elemental analysis in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Thereafter, the specimens were bonded to a ceramic (Dentine A3 and Enamel S-59; Creation CC) interface. Specimens were stored for 24 hours at 23 °C. The bond strength of the SLM-ceramic interface was measured by using the macroshear test (SBT) method (n=10). Adhesion tests were performed in a universal testing machine (1 mm/min). The Shapiro-Wilk test revealed that the chemical composition data were not normally distributed. Therefore, the atomic (At%) and weight percentages (Wt%) were analyzed by using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by pairwise Mann-Whitney U tests between the control and AM groups (AM-1 to AM-4). However, the Shapiro-Wilk test revealed that the surface roughness (Ra) and ceramic bond strength data were normally distributed. Therefore, data were analyzed by using 1-way ANOVA, followed by the post hoc Sidak test (α=.05).

RESULTS

Significant differences were obtained in Wt%, At%, and Ra values among the Co-Cr alloys evaluated (P<.05). Furthermore, the control group revealed significantly lower mean ±standard deviation Ra values (0.79 ±0.11 μm), followed by AM-3 (1.57 ±0.15 μm), AM-2 (1.80 ±0.43 μm), AM-1 (2.43 ±0.34 μm), and AM-4 (2.84 ±0.27 μm). However, no significant differences were obtained in the metal-ceramic shear bond strength among the different groups evaluated, ranging from mean ±standard deviation 75.77 ±11.92 MPa to 83.65 ±12.21 MPa.

CONCLUSIONS

Co-Cr dental alloys demonstrated a significant difference in their chemical compositions. Subtractive and additive manufacturing procedures demonstrated a significant influence on the surface roughness of the Co-Cr alloy specimens. However, the metal-ceramic shear bond strength of Co-Cr alloys was found to be independent of the manufacturing process.

Influence of 38% silver diamine fluoride application on bond stability to enamel and dentin using universal adhesives in self-etch mode

In order to evaluate the influence of 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) application on enamel and dentin bond stability of universal adhesives in self-etch mode, a 38% SDF and three universal adhesives were used in this study. Initial shear bond strength (ISBS), fatigue bond strength (FBS), and shear bond strength of survivors (SBSS) to enamel and dentin of universal adhesives in self-etch mode, with and without SDF application, were determined. SDF was applied to the polished enamel or dentin surface for 1 min, water-rinsed and air-dried for comparison with controls. The universal adhesives were applied to the prepared samples and composite resin was bonded using a mold-enclosed method. Enamel bond stability of universal adhesives with SDF (ISBS: 14.7-20.4 MPa; FBS: 5.5-7.4 MPa and SBSS: 14.4-21.5 MPa) was significantly weaker than those without SDF (ISBS: 28.0-29.2 MPa; FBS: 12.1-15.6 MPa and SBSS: 28.4-34.4 MPa). Dentin bond stability with SDF (ISBS: 14.8-20.9 MPa; FBS: 7.1-8.2 MPa and SBSS: 17.3-21.8 MPa) was also significantly weaker than without SDF (ISBS: 19.3-36.1 MPa; FBS: 11.0-13.7 MPa and SBSS: 22.2-34.6 MPa). The results suggest that SDF application on enamel and dentin reduces the bond stability of universal adhesives in self-etch mode.

Shear bond strength of composite cement to alumina-coated versus tribochemical silica-treated zirconia

OBJECTIVES

To compare the shear bond strength of composite-resin cement to nano-structured alumina-coated versus to tribochemical silica-treated zirconia, and to analyze the residual stresses on both of nano-structured alumina-coated versus tribochemical silica-treated zirconia specimens.

METHODS

One hundred and eighty zirconia disks (10 mm and 5 mm in diameter, 5 mm thickness) were divided into two groups: nano-structured alumina coating (H.C.Starck, AlN) and tribochemical silica treatment (CoJet) followed by RelyX Ceramic Primer (COJ). For each group, two different sizes of identically pre-treated zirconia specimens were bonded together with RelyX Unicem 2 Cement. A total of 90 specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h and then further assigned to three groups (n = 15/test group): short-term test, thermocycling for 5000 cycles, and thermocycling for 10,000 cycles. Bond strength was tested in shear mode and results were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, followed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD (α = 0.05). Failure mode and surfaces were analyzed with optical microscopy and SEM. X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for t-m phase transformation and residual stress analysis on mechanically pre-treated AlN and COJ surfaces.

RESULTS

The mean bond strengths of AlN and COJ groups were not statistically different after thermocycling (p > 0.05). However, when compare to 24 h only the bond strength of the COJ groups decreased significantly after thermocycling (p < 0.05). Most of specimens in both AlN and COJ groups exhibited adhesive failure. Compressive stresses were detected on both mechanically pre-treated AlN and COJ surfaces, with significant differences in stress values.

CONCLUSION

Following thermocycling, composite-zirconia bond strength of nano-structured alumina coating was comparable to that of tribochemical silica treatment.

Shear bond strength of zirconia to resin: The effects of specimen preparation and loading procedure

PURPOSE

Shear bond strength (SBS) test is the most commonly used method for evaluating resin bond strength of zirconia, but SBS results vary among different studies even when evaluating the same bonding strategy. The purpose of this study was to promote standardization of the SBS test in evaluating zirconia ceramic bonding and to investigate factors that may affect the SBS value of a zirconia/resin cement/composite resin bonding specimen.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The zirconia/resin cement/composite resin bonding specimens were used to simulate loading with a shear force by the three-dimensional finite element (3D FE) modeling, in which stress distribution under uniform/non-uniform load, and different resin cement thickness and different elastic modulus of resin composite were analyzed. In vitro SBS test was also performed to validate the results of 3D FE analysis.

RESULTS

The loading flat width was an important affecting factor. 3D FE analysis also showed that differences in resin cement layer thickness and resin composite would lead to the variations of stress accumulation area. The SBS test result showed that the load for preparing a SBS specimen is negatively correlated with the resin cement thickness and positively correlated with SBS values.

CONCLUSION

When preparing a SBS specimen for evaluating bond performance, the load flat width, the load applied during cementation, and the different composite resins used affect the SBS results and therefore should be standardized.

Biocompatibility and Durability of Diazonium Adhesives on Dental Alloys

PURPOSE

A new type of diazonium-based adhesive has been recently developed by our team to bind dental alloys (Titanium, stainless steel, and cobalt chromium) to dental polymers. Here, we explored the endurance of the resulting adhesive after thermal-cycling and autoclave aging.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Polished samples of titanium (Ti), stainless steel (SS) and cobalt chromium (Co-Cr) were coated with a diazonium-based adhesive. Untreated samples served as controls (n = 12 per each condition). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed to characterize the elemental compositions of the different surfaces. Biocompatibility of the coated alloys was assessed with human gingival fibroblasts (HGF). Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and total organic carbon (TOC) analyses were used to quantify the ions and organic matters released from the diazonium coated alloys. Endurance of the adhesives was assessed by exposing the samples to autoclaving and thermal-cycling. The tensile strength of the poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA)-alloy bond was also tested.

RESULTS

Results of mechanical testing demonstrated a higher endurance of the coated CoCr, Ti, and SS compared to the uncoated alloys. The human fibroblasts cultured on the substrates remained alive and metabolically active, and the coatings did not release significant amounts of toxic chemicals in solutions.

CONCLUSIONS

The results further support the use of diazonium-based adhesives as new coupling agents for dental applications.

Shear bond strength vs interfacial fracture toughness - Adherence to CAD/CAM blocks

OBJECTIVE

To compare shear bond strength (SBS) and interfacial fracture toughness (IK_IC) results when assessing the effect of surface roughness and thermocycling on the adherence of a resin composite luting agent (RCLA) to a CAD/CAM resin composite block (RCB).

METHODS

Tetric CAD HT along with the recommended bonding system, Adhese Universal and Variolink Esthetic LC, were used. Surface roughness was achieved with 600/320/60 grit SiC papers. Samples were stored 24h in 37°C water or thermocycled 10000× (5°C-55°C) prior to testing. Results were analyzed by univariate ANOVA and Scheffé modified t-tests (α=0.05). Fractured specimens were viewed with a stereo microscope and selected specimens with a scanning electron microscope.

RESULTS

SBS results showed a significant difference between the 60 grit group and the other groups, both after 24h and thermocycling. A large number of SBS samples showed cohesive fracture or subsurface damage in RCB. Thermocycling led to a significant decrease in SBS in all groups. IK_IC results showed no significant differences due to surface preparation after 24h storage in 37°C. After thermocycling, there was a significant difference between the 60 and the 600 grit groups. All K_IC samples fractured adhesively at the RCB surface. K_IC of the RCLA was significantly higher than IK_IC of all groups.

SIGNIFICANCE

The results endorse the use of fracture mechanics methodology for the assessment and characterization of adherence, while identifying difficulties in its implementation. The results suggest also that adherence to CAD/CAM RCB may be limited by the strength of the resin composite block - adhesive interface.

Etch-and-rinse vs self-etch mode for dentin bonding effectiveness of universal adhesives

In this study, dentin bond fatigue resistance and interfacial science characteristics of universal adhesives through etch-and-rinse and self-etch modes were investigated. Resin composite was bonded to human dentin with four universal adhesives, namely, Adhese Universal, All-Bond Universal, G-Premio Bond, and Scotchbond Universal Adhesive. The initial bond strengths, bond fatigue strengths, and interfacial science characteristics of the universal adhesives with dentin through etch-and-rinse and self-etch modes were determined. Bond fatigue resistance (initial bond strength and bond fatigue strength) of universal adhesives in etch-and-rinse mode showed no significant difference in contrast to that in self-etch mode and was material-dependent regardless of the etching mode. Although phosphoric acid conditioning of dentin did not have a strong impact on the bond fatigue resistance, surface free energy and parameters of dentin were significantly decreased by etching and by application of universal adhesives regardless of etching mode. Changes in γ_S and γ_S^h for when universal adhesive was applied to etched and ground dentin were significantly different depending on the adhesive. The results suggest that bonding performance of universal adhesives was effective in both etching modes; however, bonding mechanisms may be different for each.

HF etching of CAD/CAM materials: influence of HF concentration and etching time on shear bond strength

Background

The required pretreatment of CAD/CAM ceramic materials before resin composite cement application varies among studies. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of hydrofluoric acid concentration and etching time on the shear bond strength (SBS) of two adhesive and two self-adhesive resin composite cements to different CAD/CAM ceramic materials.

Methods

SBS of two adhesive (Panavia V5, Kuraray, [PV5]; Vita Adiva F-Cem, Vita Zahnfabrik, [VAF]) and two self-adhesive (RelyX Unicem 2 Automix, 3 M Espe, [RUN]; Vita Adiva S-Cem, Vita, [VAS]) cements to four different CAD/CAM materials (Vitablocs Mark II, Vita, [VM]; Vita Enamic, Vita, [VE]; e.max CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent, [EC]; Vita Suprinity PC, Vita, [VS]) was measured. The effect of the surface pretreatment by using two different hydrofluoric acid products (HF5% Vita Ceramics Etch, Vita and HF9% buffered, Ultradent Porcelain Etch, Ultradent Products) were assessed at etching times of 0 s, 5 s, 15 s, 30s and 60s for each cement and restorative material combination (n = 10 per group, total n = 1440).

Results

Significant effects were found for the etching time and cement for all materials with highest shear bond strength for etching times of 60s = 30s = 15 s ≥ 5 s > 0 s and for RUN>PV5 = VAF > VAS (p < 0.05). Etching with HF5% for 5 s to 15 s resulted in higher SBS values, while no differences were observed between HF5% and HF9% buffered when the substrates were etched for 30s to 60s (p < 0.05).

Conclusions

Within the limitations of this study the recommended surface pretreatment of silicate ceramics is HF etching with concentrations of 5% or 9% for 15 s to 60s to achieve highest shear bond strength while the glassy matrix is sufficiently dissolved. The tested resin composite cements can be applied with all tested materials and suggested for clinical application.

Adhesion of porcelain to three-dimensionally printed and soft milled cobalt chromium

PURPOSE

To investigate the adhesion strength and bonding interface of layered porcelain to powdered cobalt-chromium (CoCr) processed by two different computer-aided manufacturing methods.

METHODS

Sixteen specimens were manufactured from each of Three-dimensionally -printed/laser-sintered (LS) CoCr and milled pre-sintered (SM) CoCr. The specimens were layered with porcelain and 4-point bending was carried out. Nanoindentation was used to calculate changes in elastic modulus and hardness before and after porcelain firing along with adhesion energy. Fracture surface and microstructural changes were examined before and after porcelain firing observed using scanning electron microscopy.

RESULTS

The adhesion energy of the LS specimens bonded porcelain were higher than the SM specimens (P<0.05). Analysis of the fracture surfaces showed a predominantly adhesive mode of failure. Elastic-modulus and hardness of the CoCr specimens increased post porcelain firing. Examination using electron-backscatter diffraction (EBSD) showed a fine grain structure for both manufacturing methods. Significant localized changes in the crystal structure post firing were only observed at the surface of the SM specimens.

CONCLUSIONS

Both manufacturing methods showed regular microstructures prior to porcelain firing. Laser-sintered CoCr had stronger bonding to porcelain than milled pre-sintered CoCr and was also more stable microstructurally post-ceramic firing. However, both manufacturing methods were deemed to have satisfactory adhesion strength to porcelain. It was also found that increased hardness of CoCr had an inverse relationship with bonding strength. High strength porcelain bonding and stability following multiple ceramic firings indicate suitability for use of these CoCr materials with implant or tooth supported long-span frameworks.

Effect of Argon Plasma Surface Treatment on Bond Strength of Resin Composite Repair

Objectives:

This study evaluated the effect of argon plasma treatment (PLA) and its combination with sandblasting (SAN), silanization (SIL), and hydrophobic bonding resin (HBR) application on the micro-shear bond strength of water-aged restorative resin composite to a newly placed composite, simulating restoration repair.

Methods and Materials:

Forty-five light-cured composite plates (20-mm long × 20-mm wide × 4-mm thick) were fabricated using a hybrid composite and stored at 37°C in distilled water for six months. The aged composite surfaces were treated according to the following experimental groups, varying both treatment and order of application: 1) SAN + SIL + HBR (control), 2) SAN + PLA for 30 seconds + SIL + HBR, 3) SAN + SIL + PLA + HBR, 4) PLA + SIL + HBR, 5) PLA + SIL, 6) PLA + HBR, 7) SIL + PLA + HBR, 8) SIL + PLA, and 9) PLA. After the surface treatments, four fresh resin composite cylinders (1.5-mm high × 1.5-mm diameter) of the same composite were built on each aged composite surface using a silicone mold. After water storage for 24 hours or one year, the specimens were submitted to shear bond strength testing. Data were statistically analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (5%).

Results:

Groups 1, 2, and 4 presented significantly higher bond strength means at 24 hours, although group 4 did not differ from group 7. Groups 5, 8, and 9 demonstrated significantly lower means than the other groups. Even though groups 1 and 2 had a significant bond strength reduction after 1 year, they still demonstrated higher bond strength at one year of storage.

Conclusions:

While PLA application combined with surface treatment methods demonstrated high bond strength results, this treatment alone was not as beneficial as other methods that included SAN, SIL and HBR.

Influence of a cylindrical crosshead on shear bond testing of composite-tooth interfaces

The effect of a cylindrical crosshead on shear bond strength of composite to dentin was assessed by finite element analysis (FEA) after shear bond testing thirty mandibular molars restored with composite cylinders (Tetric EvoCeram-3 mm diameter) perpendicular to conditioned dentin. Cross-sectional geometric models were created with quadrilateral linear plane stress elements. Stress distributions for normal, shear, and major principal stresses were plotted. Mean shear bond strength for the experimental group was 23.9 MPa (±4.54), about 15-75% higher than values reported with other methods. FEA showed localized 'hot spots' (±16-20 MPa) at the corners of the base of the adhesive layer under a 20 N vertical load. Principal stresses across the composite-dentin interface were lower (±12-16 MPa), but significantly homogenous, approximating closely the nominal strength value. With uniform stress distributions across the adhesive layer, FEA confirmed that a cylindrical crosshead may be an optional tool to improve shear bond testing of dental materials.

Evaluation of mold-enclosed shear bond strength between zirconia core and porcelain veneer

This study aimed to evaluate the mold-enclosed shear bond strength (ME-SBS) of zirconia to veneering porcelain with different surface treatments. Colored or uncolored zirconia coupons were either highly polished or airborne-particle abraded. The specimens were divided into groups with/without application of liner. Veneering porcelain was fired into an alumina ring mold on the zirconia coupons. The assembled specimens were subjected to the ME-SBS test. The mean ME-SBS for groups ranged from 7-10 MPa with no significant difference (p>0.05). A three-way ANOVA showed that coloring and surface roughening of the zirconia specimen had no significant influence on the ME-SBS value, but liner application exhibited a significant effect with a minor decrease in the MESBS (p=0.049). Surface treatments (coloring, airborne-particle abrasion, and liner application) were found to not cause a significant increase to the zirconia-porcelain bond strength. The application of zirconia liner had a slight negative influence on the ME-SBS results.

Fracture force for veneered materials on restorations measured by torsion testing

The torsional fracture strength at the interface between a base plate and veneering material was evaluated for three kinds of veneered restoration: porcelain fused to zirconia (PFZ), porcelain fused to metal (PFM), and composite resin veneered metal (CRVM). The metal and zirconia base plate (30×4×0.4 mm) were prepared and these plates were veneered as test specimens using each material to a total thickness of 1.2 mm. Torsional force was applied to each specimen using a rotational speed of 1.0 deg/min until the veneering material underwent fracture or exfoliation. The torsional fracture values were measured and the data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The torsional fracture strength for PFZ, PFM, and CRVM was 3.0, 3.1, and 11.1 N•cm, respectively.

Relationship between mechanical properties and bond durability of short fiber-reinforced resin composite with universal adhesive

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between mechanical properties and bond durability of short fiber-reinforced resin composite with universal adhesive. As controls, micro-hybrid and nano-hybrid resin composites were tested. The universal adhesives used were Scotchbond Universal, Adhese Universal, and G-Premio Bond. The fracture toughness and flexural properties of resin composites, and shear bond strength and shear fatigue strength of universal adhesive with resin composite using both total-etch and self-etch modes were determined. In the results, short fiber-reinforced resin composite showed significantly higher fracture toughness than did micro-hybrid and nano-hybrid resin composites. The flexural strength and modulus of short fiber-reinforced and nano-hybrid resin composites were significantly lower than were those of micro-hybrid resin composites. Regardless of etching mode, the shear bond strength of universal adhesives with short fiber-reinforced resin composite did not show any significant differences from micro-hybrid and nano-hybrid resin composites. The shear fatigue strength of universal adhesives with short fiber-reinforced resin composite and micro-hybrid resin composites were significantly higher than that of nano-hybrid resin composites. The results of this study suggest that the mechanical properties of short fiber-reinforced resin composite improve their bond durability with universal adhesive.

Bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to base metal alloys having different surface treatments

Background

This study aimed to assess and compare the shear bond strength of self-etch and self-adhesive resin cement to nickel-chromium-cobalt alloy with different surface treatments.

Materials and Methods

In this in vitro study, a total of 120 disks were fabricated of VeraBond II base metal alloy. Specimens were divided into 15 groups of 8 based on the type of cement and surface treatment. The five surface treatments studied included sandblasting alone, application of Alloy Primer with and without sandblasting, and application of Metal Primer II with and without sandblasting. The three cement tested included Panavia F2.0, RelyX Unicem (RU), and G-Cem (GC). After receiving the respective surface treatments, the specimens were thermocycled for 1500 cycles and underwent shear bond strength testing. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 and three-way analysis of variance. P values of the significant level of 0.05 were reported.

Results

The results exhibited that the mean bond strengths in sandblasted groups were higher than nonsandblasted one. These differences were significantly higher in the sandblasted groups of Panavia F2.0 and RU cement (P < 0.05). The mean bond strength values between GC and Panavia F2.0 were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The highest bond strength was recorded for Panavia F2.0 with the surface treatment of both sandblasting and Metal Primer II.

Conclusion

Based on the results, sandblasting improves the shear bond strength of self-etch and self-adhesive resin cement to base metal alloys. The best results can be achieved with a combination of sandblasting and metal primers. The performance of resin cement depends on to their chemical composition, not to the type of system.
