Autonomic control of the urogenital tract

The urogenital tract houses many of the organs that play a major role in homeostasis, in particular those that control water and salt balance, and reproductive function. This review focuses on the anatomical and functional innervation of the kidneys, urinary ducts and bladders of the urinary system, and the gonads, gonadal ducts, and intromittent organs of the reproductive tract. The literature, especially in recent years, is overwhelmingly skewed toward the situation in mammals. Nevertheless, where specific neurochemical markers have been investigated, common patterns of innervation can be found in representatives from most vertebrate classes. Not surprisingly the vasculature, epithelia and smooth muscle of all urogenital organs receives adrenergic innervation. These nerves may contain non-adrenergic non-cholinergic (NANC) neurotransmitters such as ATP and NPY. Cholinergic nerves increase motility in most urogenital organs with the exception of the kidney. The major NANC nerves found to influence urogenital organs include those containing VIP/PACAP, galanin and neuronal nitric oxide synthase. These can be found associated with both smooth muscle and epithelia. The role these nerves play, and the circumstances where they are activated are for the most part unknown.

Location of the ureteral openings in the cloacas of tinamous, some ratite birds, and crocodilians: a primitive character

Cloacas of 67 avian species, of both sexes, from various habitats and differing dietary habits, were examined macro- and microscopically to investigate possible variation in the location of the ureteral openings. Differing from most birds studied, in adult male Rhea americana and several tinamous species the ureters were found to open into the coprodeum. In these species the urodeum receives only the vas deferens or oviduct. Similarly, in crocodiles Caiman crocodilus yacare, but not in lizards Tropidurus montanus and snakes Crotalus durissus terrificus, the ureters empty into the coprodeum. This similarity between ancient birds (ratites and tinamous) and crocodiles may indicate a primitive character linking reptiles and birds. This unusual position of the ureteral orifice can represent an adaptation to facilitate urine collection into the coprodeum and large intestine. Another possibility is that this variation in ureter position is a male reproductive strategy to avoid the mixture of urine and semen in the cloaca. There were no evident correlations between the location of the ureteral openings and the birds' habitat, diet, or histology of the coprodeal mucosa. The occurrence of a phallus in eight species of birds was detected, as well as a peculiar vascularization related to the coprodeal epithelium of anseriformes. Together, these data add to the scarce information about the morphophysiology of the avian cloaca, and also contribute to clarify avian phylogenetic linkages.

Acute heat acclimation and kidney function in broilers

Broilers previously exposed to high environmental temperatures (heat-acclimated) are more resistant to heat stress and consume more water during heat stress than nonacclimated controls. Two experiments were conducted to determine whether heat-acclimated broilers conserve body water by reducing urine and solute (Na) excretion. In the first experiment, renal function studies were conducted at an ambient temperature (Ta) of approximately 21 C using anesthetized 7-wk-old male broilers. Control birds reared at a constant Ta of 24 C (Group N: noncycled Ta) were compared with birds that had been heat-acclimated by exposure for 3 to 6 d to a daily sinusoidal cycle of 24 to 35 to 24 C (Group C: cycled Ta). In the second experiment, renal function studies were conducted on anesthetized 5-wk-old control and heat-acclimated male broilers while they were exposed to a Ta of 21 C (Ambient Ta: Groups NA, CA), or to a Ta of 32 C (High Ta: Groups NH, CH). When high intravenous infusion rates (.37 mL/kg body mass per min) were used to simulate the volume expansion caused by thermogenic polydipsia, urine flow rates were significantly lower in Groups C and CA than in Groups N and NA, osmolal clearances were lower in Groups CA and CH than in Groups NA and NH, and all heat-acclimated groups in both experiments (Groups C, CA, CH) had significantly lower glomerular filtration rates (GFR), filtered loads of Na, and tubular Na reabsorption rates than the respective control groups (Groups N, NA, NH). These changes in kidney function potentially would minimize urinary fluid and solute loss when heat-acclimated broilers consume large quantities of water to support evaporative cooling. Reductions in GFR, filtered loads of Na, and tubular Na reabsorption rates also may help heat-acclimated broilers reduce the metabolic heat load associated with active (energy requiring) recovery of solute (Na) from the glomerular ultrafiltrate.

Serum electrolyte and enzyme responses to heat stress and dehydration in the fowl (Gallus domesticus)

1. Serum electrolytes, enzymes and various metabolites were determined in the hyperthermic and dehydrated fowl. 2. In normally-hydrated fowls, heat stress did not significantly affect blood constituents. 3. Water deprivation for 48 hr (dehydration) significantly (p less than 0.05) increased Na+, osmolality, SGPT and T3-retention. 4. During hyperthermic dehydration, Na+, Cl-, osmolality (p less than 0.01), BUN, glucose, T3-retention (p less than 0.02) and uric acid (p less than 0.001) significantly increased. 5. The present findings are consistent with the suggestion that changes in Na+/Ca2+ ratio might raise the hypothalamic thermoregulatory set-point and support our previous findings that acclimated fowls could efficiently regulate body temperature and acid-base status while avoiding extreme metabolic and enzymatic changes during heat exposure and dehydration.

Salt and water excretion by birds: the lower intestine as an integrator of renal and intestinal excretion

1. In the fowl, the small intestine is important for net absorption of Ca2+ and K+, but not for Na+ nor water (in this and several other species). 2. Net water absorption in birds with large saccate caeca occurs in caeca greater than rectum greater than coprodeum, but net Na+ absorption (an active process motivating other absorptive functions) occurs in rectum less than caeca and coprodeum. 3. Interspecific variability and the scarcity of comparative studies militate against broad, well-founded generalisations in this subject.

Water balance of colostomised and non-colostomised hens at different ambient temperatures

1. The quantities of water gained and lost, and hence the total water balance, were determined in normal and colostomised White Leghorn laying hens at ambient temperatures of 5, 20 and 35 degrees C. 2. In both groups the water intake and water loss at all temperatures were well balanced. 3. Water to food ratios and water content of excreta of normal hens increased with increasing temperature. 4. The water excreta at 35 degrees C are caused by an increasing urine production and not by an increased water passage through the alimentary tract.

Dietary Na+ effects on transepithelial transport of NaCl by hen (Gallus domesticus) lower intestine (colon and coprodeum) perfused luminally in vivo

The colon and coprodeum of anaesthetised laying hens was perfused luminally with solutions of varying compositions, to elucidate the influence of three levels of dietary NaCl and of luminal NaCl concentrations on coprodeal and colonic transport of NaCl. Net Na+ and Cl- absorption rates were increased in response to low dietary Na+ levels and higher luminal NaCl concentrations. Net Na+ absorption was always against the prevailing electrochemical gradient, saturably dependent on luminal Na+ concentrations in low Na+ diet birds, and linearly dependent on luminal concentrations in medium and high Na+ diet birds. Net Cl- absorption was usually down its electrochemical gradient. The Cl- flux rates were strongly linearly dependent on Na+ flux rates, and statistically this relationship could account for all significant variation of Cl- fluxes associated with dietary and perfusate treatments. Transmural electrical potential differences were invariably serosa positive, and partly correlated with Na+ fluxes.
