Progress in research on the reproductive function in the sand rat (Psammomys obesus): A review

The Fat Sand Rat (Psammomys obesus, P. obesus) is a diurnal herbivore and phytophage, with seasonal reproductive behavior. The sexually active phase lasts from autumn to early spring and the sexually inactive phase from late spring to summer. In the past years, P. obesus has gained much attention as an animal model in biological and clinical research. It is a suitable model for diet-induced insulin resistance, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and obesity studies. In addition, the seasonal reproduction of P. obesus is gaining more and more attention. The current paper aims to review and sum up the progress in the understanding of the reproductive anatomo-histo-physiology of Psammomys obesus, in order to facilitate future research in this area and to expose further perspectives for researchers.

Aquaporins in desert rodent physiology

Desert rodents face a sizeable challenge in maintaining salt and water homeostasis due to their life in an arid environment. A number of their organ systems exhibit functional characteristics that limit water loss above that which occurs in non-desert species under similar conditions. These systems include renal, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, nasal, and skin epithelia. The desert rodent kidney preserves body water by producing a highly concentrated urine that reaches a maximum osmolality nearly three times that of the common laboratory rat. The precise mechanism by which urine is concentrated in any mammal is unknown. Insights into the process may be more apparent in species that produce highly concentrated urine. Aquaporin water channels play a fundamental role in water transport in several desert rodent organ systems. The role of aquaporins in facilitating highly effective water preservation in desert rodents is only beginning to be explored. The organ systems of desert rodents and their associated AQPs are described.

Comparative murine norovirus studies reveal a lack of correlation between intestinal virus titers and enteric pathology

Human noroviruses are significant emerging pathogens, causing the majority of non-bacterial gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. The recent discovery of 30 murine norovirus strains is beginning to facilitate a detailed investigation of norovirus pathogenesis. Here, we have performed an in vivo comparative analysis of two murine norovirus strains, MNV-1 and MNV-3. In immunocompetent mice, MNV-1 caused modest intestinal pathology whereas MNV-3 was attenuated compared to MNV-1. Surprisingly though, MNV-3 reached higher titers in intestinal tissue than MNV-1. MNV-3 also displayed attenuation in mice deficient in the critical interferon signaling molecule STAT-1, demonstrating that MNV-3 attenuation is not a result of increased interferon sensitivity. Importantly, MNV-3-infected mice lost weight and developed gastric bloating and diarrhea in STAT1(-/-) mice, from which all animals recovered. This disease profile recapitulates several key features of acute gastroenteritis experienced by people infected with a human norovirus.

Mucosal surface area and fermentation activity in the hind gut of hydrated and chronically dehydrated working donkeys

The effects of mild chronic dehydration on fermentation rate and mucosal surface area in the cecum, dorsa and ventral colon, and descending colon of the hindgut were investigated in South African donkeys (n = 11) in agricultural work. Dehydration representing a 6% drop in BW (n = 6) was associated with increased fermentation activity in the cecum (252 +/- 22.9 vs. 161 +/- 13.5 micromol/g of DM.h(-1), P < 0.01) and enhanced fluid retention in the ventral colon (0.81 +/- 0.026 vs. 0.73 +/- 0.034 mL/g gut, P < 0.05). Fermentation activity in the next segment of the hindgut, the ventral colon, of dehydrated donkeys was also greater numerically (92.5 +/- 22.60 vs. 77.9 +/- 10.40 micromol/g of DM.h(-1)), but this difference was not significant. Total mucosal and crypt surface area per unit volume of gut (Sv, microm2/microm3) was greater in dehydrated donkeys for the cecum (253 +/- 23.0 vs. 161 +/- 13.5, P < 0.01), the ventral colon (286 +/- 6.2 vs. 171 +/- 9.8, P < 0.01), the dorsal colon (276 +/- 18.2 vs. 256 +/- 11.0, P < 0.05), and the descending colon (260 +/- 20.3 vs. 191 +/- 15.2, P < 0.05). Enhanced fermentation activity and enhanced mucosal absorptive or secretory capacity within the hindgut during chronic dehydration was associated with an observed maintenance of appetite. These adaptations in the hindgut are valuable physiological attributes for working donkeys in semi-arid regions where they are frequently exposed to chronic dehydration.
