Effects of low frequency magnetic fields on Na,K-ATPase activity

Immobilization of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) onto carbon cloth and its application as working electrode in an electroenzymatic bioreactor

A high porosity carbon cloth with immobilized FAD was employed as working electrode in electrochemical NADH-regeneration procedure. Carbon cloth was oxidized with hot acids to create surface carboxyl group and then coupled by adenine amino group of FAD with carbodiimide in the presence of N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide. The bioelectrocatalytic NADH-regeneration was coupled to the conversion of achiral substrate pyruvate into chiral product l-lactate by l-lactate dehydrogenase (l-LDH) within the same reactor. The conversion was completed at 96h in bioreactor with FAD-modified carbon cloth, resulting in about 6mM of l-lactate from 10mM of pyruvate. While with bare carbon cloth, the yield at 120h was around 5mM. Immobilized FAD on the surface of carbon cloth electrode facilitated it to carry electrons from electrode to electron transfer enzymes; thereby NADH-regeneration was accelerated to drive the enzymatic reaction efficiently.

Effects of low-density static magnetic fields on the growth and activities of wastewater bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas putida

The aim of this study was to explore the influence of a moderate static magnetic field (SMF) of different densities on Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas putida that are commonly found in wastewater treatment plants. In line with literature reports that SMF increases the efficiency of wastewater treatment the findings of this study indicated that SMF negatively influenced the growth but positively influenced the enzymatic activities and ATP levels of the two model bacteria. The inhibitory effect of SMF on growth of E. coli and P. putida was most pronounced at their optimal growth temperature (37°C and 28°C respectively) and was reversible shortly after the SMF had been terminated. Finally, the results suggested that the induced energy metabolism reflected in higher dehydrogenase activities and ATP levels may be more important for survival, and adaptation to SMF induced stress than the increase in the expression of the rpoS gene.

Evaluation of rat thyroid gland morphophysiological status after three months exposure to 50 Hz electromagnetic field

Objective of our study was to use morphophysiological criteria in order to determine the sensitivity of male rat thyroid gland to an extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) influence and the ability of the gland to repair after period of exposure. Animals were exposed to 50Hz, 50-500 microT ELF-EMF for 3 months when a part of them (group I) were sacrificed, while the rest of animals were subjected to recovery evaluation of the gland and sacrificed after 1 (group II), 2 (group III) and 3 (group IV) weeks. Histological and stereological analyses were performed on paraffin and semifine thyroid gland sections. Serum T3 and T4 were also determined. Histological and stereological analyses showed that the volume density of follicular epithelium and thyroid activation index decreased, while the volume density of colloid and capillary network increased in group I, II and III. The values of all these parameters in group IV were similar to corresponding controls. Serum T3 and T4 concentrations were significantly lower in all exposed animals, except in group I. Results of this study demonstrate that after significant morphophysiological changes caused by ELF-EMF exposure thyroid gland recovered morphologically, but not physiologically, during the investigated repair period.

Optimal frequencies for magnetic acceleration of cytochrome oxidase and Na,K-ATPase reactions

Low frequency magnetic fields increase the activity of the membrane enzymes, Na,K-ATPase and cytochrome oxidase, and the increased activity varies with frequency. Optimal frequencies for increases in the reaction rate constant of cytochrome oxidase and in the rate of splitting of ATP by Na,K-ATPase differ by an order of magnitude, and are in the ranges of the turnover numbers of the respective enzyme reactions. The two frequency dependence curves are similar in that the slope of the low frequency portion is about 10 times greater than the slope of the high frequency portion. The greater slope indicates greater ability to adjust quickly in the low frequency range, which may be significant for optimal biological control of activity.
