The prevalence and pathogenicity of Chorioptes bovis (Hering, 1845) and Psoroptes cuniculi (Delafond, 1859) (Acari: Psoroptidae) infestations in feral goats in New Zealand

Concurrent Chorioptic Mange and Dermatophytosis in Dairy Goats: A Case Report

A concurrent chorioptic mange and dermatophytosis outbreak occurred in a goat flock in northwestern Italy. Sanitation of the flock was obtained following pour-on eprinomectin application at a dose of 1 mg/kg; enilconazole was used for environmental disinfection against dermatophyte spores.

Seasonal prevalence and mean intensity of Psoroptes ovis infestation in goats in the Brazilian semiarid region

To determine the prevalence and seasonal variation of Psoroptes ovis (Delafond, 1858) mange in goats in the semiarid region of Paraíba, 541 crossbred goats of both sexes and different ages were examined between June 1999 and May 2001 and between August 2011 and December 2012, by washing their ear canals. The monthly prevalence of the infestation varied between 66.66% and 100% without significant differences (p = 0.10) among months and years. The intensity of infestation was higher between 2011-2012 (p < 0.05), with an annual rainfall of 123 mm, than between 1999-2000, which had an annual rainfall of 614.9 mm. By the Spearman test there was a negative correlation between the relative humidity and the rainfall of the intensity of the P. ovis infestation. It is concluded that parasitism by P. ovis occurs at a similar prevalence rate during the entire year but increases during dry years.

Observations on the potential for natural transfer of Psoroptes cuniculi and Chorioptes bovis (Acari: Psoroptidae) between goats and sheep

Goats and sheep were pastured together and held in close contact in yards twice a month for 21 months. The goats had a high prevalence of both the rabbit ear canker mite, Psoroptes cuniculi and the chorioptic mange mite, Chorioptes bovis. The sheep were not infested with P. cuniculi at the beginning of the study and viable C. bovis could not be detected. At no time during the study did P. cuniculi establish in the ears of sheep, despite a maximum prevalence of >95% P. cuniculi in goats. This may have been related to the viscous nature of sheep cerumen. Levels of cerumen in goats' ears increased with increasing prevalence of the mite in the flock. The prevalence of C. bovis in the sheep flock did not exceed 10%, despite a maximum prevalence of >90% infested goats. The difficulty of detecting light infestations of mites means that it was not clear whether the C. bovis infestation of sheep was derived from goats or was present when the study began. Whatever the source, close contact with goats with an active and extensive C. bovis infestation seems unlikely to seriously influence populations of the ectoparasite in sheep. Psoroptes cuniculi was found to he established in goats as young as five days and post-mortem examination of goats' ears was more successful at revealing P. cuniculi than was use of an otoscope during life.

Inter- and intra-specific variation within the genus Psoroptes (Acari: Psoroptidae)

In this paper the taxonomy and relative importance of various species within the genus Psoroptes are reviewed with respect to inter- and intra-specific variations in cross infestivity and host specificity, site of infestation and morphological characters. Intra-specific variation within populations of the sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis will then be discussed critically with respect to virulence (the relative growth of the scab lesion and mite burdens), epidemiology, susceptibility to the systemic acaricide, ivermectin, and resistance to synthetic pyrethroid and organophosphate acaricides. Finally, it is suggested that the ear mite, P. cuniculi, and the sheep scab mite, P. ovis are variants of the same species. Information was collected from published literature and from the results of unpublished studies carried out at the VLA, Weybridge over the last 10 years.

Epidemiology of subclinical ovine psoroptic otoacariasis in Great Britain

Seven sheep flocks with subclinical psoroptic otoacariasis were investigated. Psoroptes species mites were isolated from 3.1 per cent of the 2676 sheep examined and the prevalence in the flocks ranged between 1.3 and 23.9 per cent, with the highest infestations in pedigree flocks. Unilateral or bilateral infestations were found in sheep of all ages. Adult and shearling rams, with prevalences of 21.5 and 14.2 per cent, respectively, were the most affected and two lambs, two and eight days old, were the youngest to be infested. There was no evidence of vertical transmission. The infestation affected several breeds of sheep. No other known hosts for Psoroptes species present on the premises were shown to be infested. Non-parasitic for-age mites were also isolated from the ear canals of the sheep and may have contributed to the clinical signs which, in adult sheep, ranged from aural haematomas/fibrosis (cauliflower ears), and violent head shaking and ear rubbing leading to excoriation and wounding of the ear and base of the ear. The signs in lambs included plaques of scab (often bloody) on the external ear cleft, excoriation of the base of the ear, ear scratching with the hind feet and inflammation of the external aspects of the horizontal canal. In all cases the internal pinnae were clear of typical psoroptic scabs. Psoroptes mites were isolated from 28.6 per cent of the damaged ears and from 7.8 per cent of the undamaged ears. There was no evidence of classical sheep scab in any of the flocks. Plunge dipping in diazinon, propetamphos or flumethrin, or the use of synthetic pyrethroid pour-on preparations and an oral drench of ivermectin had little effect because ear mite infestations were detected in the flocks after these treatments. An injection of ivermectin at 200 micrograms/kg bodyweight effectively eradicated the infestations when it was administered to these infested flocks.

The incidence of Chorioptes bovis (Acarina: Psoroptidae) on the feet of horses, sheep, and goats in the Netherlands

The feet of horses, sheep, and goats of different breeds and from many different localities were examined for Chorioptes bovis. In horses, mites were mainly found in the Belgian and Frisian breeds (40% and 62% infected, respectively). In sheep and goats, respectively 63% and 86% were infected. In horses as well as in sheep and goats, mange-lesions were rarely seen. A number of sheep and goats were examined for mites and lesions quantitatively. In sheep all mites were restricted to the region close to the accessory digits and the claws. In goats the average number of mites was higher than in sheep, and mites could be found on all locations of the feet at least as far as the carpal and tarsal joint. Both in sheep and goats the biggest density of mites was found just below the accessory digits. When crusts were present, they were generally small and hidden under the coat. In sheep, which were housed for a long period, crusts were seen more often and were more distinct than in pastured animals. A negative correlation between the number of mites and the presence and extensiveness of crusts was observed. A possible explanation for this phenomenon is suggested. From the results of this study it is clear that there is no necessity to list chorioptic mange in sheep and goats as a notifiable disease.
