Oxidation of alkanes with hydrogen peroxide catalysed by iron salts or iron oxide colloids in reverse microemulsions

Aerobic Partial Oxidation of Alkanes Using Photodriven Iron Catalysis

Photodriven oxidations of alkanes in trifluoroacetic acid using commercial and synthesized Fe(III) sources as catalyst precursors and dioxygen (O₂) as the terminal oxidant are reported. The reactions produce alkyl esters and occur at ambient temperature in the presence of air, and catalytic turnover is observed for the oxidation of methane in a pure O₂ atmosphere. Under optimized conditions, approximately 17% conversion of methane to methyl trifluoroacetate at more than 50% selectivity is observed. It is demonstrated that methyl trifluoroacetate is stable under catalytic conditions, and thus overoxidized products are not formed through secondary oxidation of methyl trifluoroacetate.

Lubricant degradation and related wear of a steel pin in lubricated sliding against a steel disc

In lubricated sliding contacts, components wear out and the lubricating oil ages with time. The present work explores the interactive influence between lubricant aging and component wear. The flat face of a steel pin is slid against a rotating steel disk under near isothermal conditions while the contact is immersed in a reservoir of lubricant (hexadecane). The chemical changes in the oil with time are measured by vibrational spectroscopy and gas chromatography. The corresponding chemistry of the pin surface is recorded using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy while the morphology of the worn pins; surface and subsurface, are observed using a combination of focused ion beam milling and scanning electron microscopy. When compared to thermal auto-oxidation of the lubricant alone, steel on steel friction and wear are found to accentuate the decomposition of oil and to reduce the beneficial impact of antioxidants. The catalytic action of nascent iron, an outcome of pin wear and disk wear, is shown to contribute to this detrimental effect. Over long periods of sliding, the decomposition products of lubricant aging on their own, as well as in conjunction with their products of reaction with iron, generate a thick tribofilm that is highly protective in terms of friction and wear.

Simultaneous effect of microemulsions and phase-transfer agents on aminolysis reactions

The catalytic effect of triethylene glycol dimethyl ether (glyme) on the butylaminolysis of 4-nitrophenylcaprate (NPC) in water/AOT/chlorobenzene microemulsions has been studied. Experimental results show the existence of four simultaneous reaction pathways. One of them takes place at the microemulsion interphase where the rate-determining step of butylaminolysis is the formation of the addition intermediate, T+/-. The locus of the other three pathways is the continuous medium of the microemulsion. These three pathways consist of the decomposition of the addition intermediate catalyzed by butylamine, by glyme, and by both of them. The kinetic model allows us to obtain the value of every rate and distribution constant involved in the overall reaction mechanism. We must emphasize that the reactions located in the continuous medium exhibit a kinetic behavior similar to the corresponding one found in pure chlorobenzene. On the basis of the pseudophase model, the percentage of reaction in each of the microdomains of the microemulsion has been calculated. Likewise, changes in the loci of reaction from the interphase to the continuous medium as a function of catalyst concentration have been proved.

Catalytic Efficiency of Iron(III) Oxides in Decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide: Competition between the Surface Area and Crystallinity of Nanoparticles

Various iron(III) oxide catalysts were prepared by controlled decomposition of a narrow layer (ca. 1 mm) of iron(II) oxalate dihydrate, FeC(2)O(4).2H(2)O, in air at the minimum conversion temperature of 175 degrees C. This thermally induced solid-state process allows for simple synthesis of amorphous Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles and their controlled one-step crystallization to hematite (alpha-Fe(2)O(3)). Thus, nanopowders differing in surface area and particle crystallinity can be produced depending on the reaction time. The phase composition of iron(III) oxides was monitored by XRD and (57)Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy including in-field measurements, providing information on the relative contents of amorphous and crystalline phases. The gradual changes in particle size and surface area accompanying crystallization were evaluated by HRTEM and BET analysis, respectively. The catalytic efficiency of the synthesized nanoparticles was tested by tracking the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The obtained kinetic data gave an unconventional nonmonotone dependence of the rate constant on the surface area of the samples. The amorphous nanopowder with the largest surface area of 401 m(2) g(-1) revealed the lowest catalytic efficiency, while the highest efficiency was achieved with the sample having a significantly lower surface area, 337 m(2) g(-1), exhibiting a prevailing content of crystalline alpha-Fe(2)O(3) phase. The obtained rate constant, 26.4 x 10(-3) min(-1) (g/L)(-1), is currently the highest value published. The observed rare catalytic phenomenon, where the particle crystallinity prevails over the surface area effects, is discussed with respect to other processes of heterogeneous catalysis.

Biomimetic oxidation of ibuprofen with hydrogen peroxide catalysed by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(2',6'-dichloro-3'-sulphonatophenyl)porphyrinatoiro n(III) and manganese(III) hydrates in AOT reverse micelles

The oxidation of ibuprofen with H2O2 catalysed by Horseradish peroxidase (HRP), Cl8TPPS4Fe(III)(OH2)2 and Cl8TPPS4Mn(III)(OH2)2 in AOT reverse micelles gives 2-(4'-isobutyl-phenyl)ethanol (5) and p-isobutyl acetophenone (6) in moderate yields. The reaction of ibuprofen (2) with H2O2 catalysed by HRP form carbon radicals by the oxidative decarboxylation, which on reaction with molecular oxygen to form hydroperoxy intermediate, responsible for the formation of the products 5 and 6. The yields of different oxidation products depend on the pH, the water to surfactant ratio (Wo), concentration of Cl8TPPS4Fe(III)(OH2)2 and Cl8TPPS4Mn(III)(OH2)2 and amount of molecular oxygen present in AOT reverse micelles. The formation of 2-(4'-isobutyl phenyl)ethanol (5) may be explained by the hydrogen abstraction from ibuprofen by high valent oxo-manganese(IV) radical cation, followed by decarboxylation and subsequent recombination of either free hydroxy radical or hydroxy iron(III)/manganese(III) porphyrins. The over-oxidation of 5 with high valent oxo-manganese, Mn(IV)radical cation intermediate form 6 in AOT reverse micelles by abstraction and recombination mechanism.
