A review of the nutritive value and utilization of whole cottonseed, cottonseed meal and associated by-products by dairy cattle

Effect of increasing dietary inclusion of whole cottonseed on nutrient digestibility and milk production of high-producing dairy cows

We determined the effects increasing dietary inclusion of whole cottonseed (WCS) on nutrient digestibility and milk production responses of high-producing dairy cows. Twenty-four multiparous Holstein cows (mean ± SD; 52.7 ± 2.63 kg/d of milk; 104 ± 23 DIM) were randomly assigned to treatment sequences in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Treatments were increasing doses of WCS at 0, 8, 16, and 24% DM, with WCS replacing soybean meal and hulls to maintain similar diet nutrient composition (%DM) of NDF (32%), forage NDF (21%), starch (27%), and CP (17%). Total fatty acid (FA) content of each treatment was 1.70, 2.96, 4.20, and 5.40%DM, respectively. Three preplanned contrasts were used to test the linear, quadratic, and cubic effects of increasing dietary WCS. Increasing dietary WCS from 0 to 24% DM quadratically influenced intakes of DM and NDF, with the highest value being for the 8% WCS, and intakes of 16- and 18-carbon, and total FA, with maximum values obtained up to 24% WCS. Increasing dietary WCS affected digestibility of DM (cubic) and NDF (quadratic), with the lowest values being for the 8% WCS. Increasing WCS increased 16-carbon digestibility (quadratic) but decreased digestibility of 18-carbon and total FA (both quadratic), with highest and lowest values for the 24% WCS, respectively. Increasing dietary WCS quadratically increased absorbed 16- and 18-carbon, and total FA, with maximum values obtained for 24% WCS. Increasing dietary WCS quadratically increased yields of milk, milk fat, milk protein, milk lactose, 3.5% fat corrected milk, and energy corrected milk, and linearly increased body weight gain. The source of milk FA was affected by dietary WCS, with a quadratic decrease in the yield of de novo and mixed milk FA and a quadratic increase in preformed milk FA. Increasing dietary WCS linearly increased trans-10 C18:1 milk FA content. As dietary WCS increased, plasma insulin linearly decreased, and plasma gossypol levels linearly increased. Despite the decrease in total FA digestibility, increasing dietary WCS from 0 to 24% DM increased FA absorption. Increasing dietary inclusion of WCS up to 16% DM increased milk production responses and DM intake. Under the current dietary conditions, high-producing dairy cows benefited best from a diet containing 8-16% DM inclusion of WCS.

Effect of feeding increasing levels of whole cottonseed on milk and milk components, milk fatty acid profile, and total-tract digestibility in lactating dairy cows

Dietary fat is fed to increase energy intake and provide fatty acids (FA) to support milk fat production. Oilseeds contain unsaturated FA that increase the risk for biohydrogenation-induced milk fat depression, but FA in whole cottonseed (WCS) are expected to be slowly released in the rumen and thus have a lower risk for biohydrogenation-induced milk fat depression. Our hypothesis was that increasing dietary WCS would increase milk fat yield by providing additional dietary FA without induction of milk fat depression. Four primiparous and 8 multiparous lactating Holstein cows, 136 ± 35 and 127 ± 4 DIM, respectively, were arranged in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Treatments were WCS provided at 0%, 3.4%, 6.8%, and 9.9% of dietary dry matter, and WCS was substituted for cottonseed hulls and soybean meal to maintain dietary fiber and protein. Treatment did not change milk yield. There was a treatment-by-parity interaction for milk fat percent and yield with a quadratic decreased in primiparous cows but no effect of WCS in multiparous cows. Cottonseed linearly increased milk fat trans-10 18:1 in primiparous cows but not in multiparous cows. Increasing WCS increased milk preformed (18C) FA yield and partially overcame the trans-10 18:1 inhibition of de novo FA synthesis in the primiparous cows. Apparent transfer of 18C FA from feed to milk decreased in all cows as WCS increased, but the magnitude of the change was greater in primiparous cows. Increasing WCS decreased total-tract apparent dry matter, organic matter, and neutral detergent fiber digestibility. There was no change in total FA digestibility. However, 18C FA digestibility tended to be decreased in both parities and 16C FA digestibility was quadratically increased in multiparous cows but not changed in primiparous cows. Total fecal flow of intact WCS increased as WCS level increased, but fecal flow of intact seeds as a percentage consumed was similar across treatments. Fecal flow of intact seeds was greater in multiparous cows (4.3% vs. 1.1% of consumed). Plasma concentrations of glucose, nonesterified FA, triglycerides, and insulin were not changed. However, plasma urea-N increased with increasing WCS. Plasma gossypol increased with WCS (0.08-1.15 µg/mL) but was well below expected toxic levels. In conclusion, WCS maintained milk and milk component yield when fed at up to 9.9% of the diet to multiparous cows without concerns of gossypol toxicity, but primiparous cows were more susceptible to biohydrogenation-induced milk fat depression in the current trial. This highlights the interactions of parity with diet composition when feeding rumen-available unsaturated fat to dairy cows.

Feeding ecology of Massoutiera mzabi (Rodentia, Ctenodactylidae) in two national parks of Central Sahara

The present range of Massoutiera mzabi is restricted to deserts and semi-deserts of the northern and Central Sahara, and discontinuously to Aïr Massif and Adrar of Ifoghas. Vegetation seems to be the second main driver of occurrence of this herbivorous rodent, so we investigated its diet selection by comparing the contents of faeces collected from two stations of the national parks of Ahaggar (Chaabet Tidekatine) and Tassili n’Ajjers (Oued Izarwaz) to the availability of plants nearby. The diet included a total of 25 plant species, 14 from Chaabet Tidekatine and 20 from Oued Izarwaz. In Chaabet Tidekatine, Zygophyllaceae (mainly Fagonia glutinosa and Fagonia bruguieri) over Asteraceae (Pulicaria incisa) and Poaceae (Stipagrostis). In Oued Izarwaz, the most consumed plant species were Asteraceae (Pulicaria crispa and P. incisa), Poaceae (Stipagrostis pungens) and Capparidaceae (Cleome amblyocarpa). Overall, M. mzabi diet appeared to be influenced more by the diversity than by the availability of vegetation. Seasonal variations in diet indicate that this rodent eats perennial and ambivalent vegetation throughout the year and opportunistically consumes annual plants mainly in the spring, with the exception of P. incisa and P. crispa which were eaten throughout the year.

Natural variation of GhSI7 increases seed index in cotton

qSI07.1, a major QTL for seed index in cotton, was fine-mapped to a 17.45-kb region, and the candidate gene GhSI7 was verified in transgenic plants. Improving production to meet human needs is a vital objective in cotton breeding. The yield-related trait seed index is a complex quantitative trait, but few candidate genes for seed index have been characterized. Here, a major QTL for seed index qSI07.1 was fine-mapped to a 17.45-kb region by linkage analysis and substitutional mapping. Only GhSI7, encoding the transcriptional regulator STERILE APETALA, was contained in the candidate region. Association test and genetic analysis indicated that an 845-bp-deletion in its intron was responsible for the seed index variation. Origin analysis revealed that this variation was unique in Gossypium hirsutum and originated from race accessions. Overexpression of GhSI7 (haplotype 2) significantly increased the seed index and organ size in cotton plants. Our findings provided a diagnostic marker for breeding and selecting cotton varieties with high seed index, and laid a foundation for further studies to understand the molecular mechanism of cotton seed morphogenesis.

Application of Lignin-Containing Cellulose Nanofibers and Cottonseed Protein Isolate for Improved Performance of Paper

There is current interest in replacing petroleum-based additives in consumer paper products with abundantly available, renewable and sustainable biopolymers such as lignin-containing cellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) and cottonseed protein. This research characterized the performance of cottonseed protein isolate with/without LCNFs to increase the dry strength of filter paper. The application of 10% protein solution with 2% LCNFs as an additive improved the elongation at break, tensile strength and modulus of treated paper products compared to the improved performance of cottonseed protein alone. Improvements in tensile modulus and tensile strength were greatest for samples containing larger amounts of lignin and a greater degree of polymerization than for those with less lignin from the same biomass sources.

Analyzing Quantitative Trait Loci for Fiber Quality and Yield-Related Traits From a Recombinant Inbred Line Population With Gossypium hirsutum Race palmeri as One Parent

Fiber quality and yield-related traits are important agronomic traits in cotton breeding. To detect the genetic basis of fiber quality and yield related traits, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population consisting of 182 lines was established from a cross between Gossypium hirsutum cultivar CCRI35 and G. hirsutum race palmeri accession TX-832. The RIL population was deeply genotyped using SLAF-seq and was phenotyped in six environments. A high-density genetic linkage map with 15,765 SNP markers and 153 SSR markers was constructed, with an average distance of 0.30 cM between adjacent markers. A total of 210 fiber quality quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and 73 yield-related QTLs were identified. Of the detected QTLs, 62 fiber quality QTLs and 10 yield-related QTLs were stable across multiple environments. Twelve and twenty QTL clusters were detected on the At and Dt subgenome, respectively. Twenty-three major QTL clusters were further validated through associated analysis and five candidate genes of four stable fiber quality QTLs were identified. This study revealed elite loci influencing fiber quality and yield and significant phenotypic selection regions during G. hirsutum domestication, and set a stage for future utilization of molecular marker assisted breeding in cotton breeding programs.

First quantitative data on the feeding ecology of an arid zone rodent, the Common gundi (Ctenodactylus gundi)

One species of the family Ctenodactylidae, the Common gundi, Ctenodactylus gundi, occupies a restricted area between the Saharan and Mediterranean domains where annual rainfall is between 50 and 400 mm. Its presence seems also conditioned by the vegetation, so its feeding ecology was investigated by the microhistological analysis of faeces collected in two stations (Baniane and Bazem) of the Aurès massif (Eastern Algeria) during two years from June 2015 to May 2017, and by the evaluation of the available food. The diet included a total of 34 plant species, 16 in Baniane and 20 in Bazem. Results show that in Baniane, Asteraceae were predominant with Artemisia herba-alba (relative abundance, A% = 33.13%), followed by Fabaceae with Argyrolobium uniflorum (A% = 20.32%) and Poaceae with Aristida sp. (A% = 14.95%). In Bazem, the most consumed plant species were Lamiaceae with Thymus ciliatus (A% = 42.77%) and Poaceae with Lolium rigidum (A% = 13.19%). Overall, C. gundi fed on a large number of plant species, and its diet appeared to be influenced more by the diversity than by the availability of vegetation. Seasonal variations in diet indicate that this rodent eats perennial vegetation throughout the year and opportunistically consumes annual plants to a lesser extent in the spring, with a certain time shifting between the two stations probably due to rainfall and temperature differences.

Effect of Nanocellulose on the Properties of Cottonseed Protein Isolate as a Paper Strength Agent

Currently, there is an increasing interest in the use of biopolymers in industrial applications to replace petroleum-based additives, since they are abundantly available, renewable and sustainable. Cottonseed protein is a biopolymer that, when used as a modifier, has shown improved performance for wood adhesives and paper products. Thus, it would be useful to explore the feasibility of using cellulose nanomaterials to further improve the performance of cottonseed protein as a paper strength agent. This research characterized the performance of cottonseed protein isolate with/without cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to increase the dry strength of filter paper. An application of 10% protein solution with CNCs (10:1) or CNFs (50:1) improved the elongation at break, tensile strength and modulus of treated paper products compared to the improved performance of cottonseed protein alone. Further analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that the cottonseed protein/nanocellulose composites interacted with the filter paper fibers, imparting an increased dry strength.

Effects of hydrolyzed cottonseed protein supplementation on performance, blood metabolites, gastrointestinal development, and intestinal microbial colonization in neonatal calves

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of an enzymatically hydrolyzed cottonseed protein (HCSP) as a peptide source on performance, blood metabolites, gastrointestinal development, and intestinal microbes. Forty-eight newborn Holstein calves were randomly assigned to 1 of the 4 dietary treatments including 0, 2, 4, and 6% of HCSP (dry matter basis). All calves received the same amount of pasteurized whole milk, weaned on d 56 of the experiment, and the study was concluded on d 70. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED in SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC) as a randomized complete block design with linear and quadratic contrasts. Results showed that increased amount of HCSP linearly decreased the starter intake during the postweaning (d 57 to 70) and overall period (d 1 to 70). In addition, when dietary HCSP increased during the overall period, average daily gain tended to linearly decrease. All skeletal growth variables also linearly decreased as dietary HCSP increased at the end of the study, except for body length, which did not differ among the treatments. Serum cortisol concentration was higher in calves supplemented with 6% of HCSP at weaning and at the end of the study. This indicates that these calves may have experienced a stressful condition compared with calves in other treatments. Total antioxidant capacity was quadratically affected by HCSP supplementation; calves fed 2 and 4% of HCSP diets had the highest total antioxidant capacity, whereas calves fed 0 and 6% HCSP diets had lower total antioxidant capacity at weaning and at end of the study. Calves supplemented with 6% HCSP had lower empty reticulo-rumen and omasum weights and rumen wall thickness compared with calves in other treatments at the end of the study. In conclusion, supplementation of HCSP at the rate of 2% of starter diet enhanced antioxidant status without any detrimental effects on the performance and metabolic status of calves, whereas greater inclusion rates impaired starter intake and growth of calves, and exposed them to a stressful status.

Effect of dietary cotton stalk on nitrogen and free gossypol metabolism in sheep

Objective

This study was to investigate the effects of dietary cotton stalk on nitrogen and free gossypol in sheep.

Methods

Treatments included 25% cotton stalk (Treat 1), 50% cotton stalk (Treat 2), and a control (no cotton stalk). Six Xinjiang daolang wethers were cannulated at the rumen and duodenum and fed one of these diets. The effects of these diets on nitrogen and free gossypol absorption and metabolism were determined. Fifteen healthy Xinjiang daolang wethers were assessed for daily gain, tissue lesions, and free gossypol accumulation.

Results

Dry matter intake decreased with increasing dietary cotton stalk. Total tract dry matter digestibility did not significantly differ among treatments. Dietary cotton stalk significantly decreased volatile fatty acids and increased ammonium nitrogen in the rumen. Nitrogen intake was significantly higher in Treat 2 than in the control or Treat 1. Nitrogen retention and free gossypol intake increased with dietary cotton stalk. Duodenal free gossypol flow did not increase, and free gossypol almost disappeared from the rumen. The free gossypol content of plasma and tissue was increased with dietary cotton stalk with liver free gossypol> muscle free gossypol>kidney free gossypol. Elevated dietary free gossypol decreased platelets, hemoglobin, and serum iron. Aspartate aminotransferase and γ-glutamyltransferase increased in Treat 2. With high long-term dietary cotton stalk intake, liver cells were swollen, and their nuclei dissolved. Renal cells were necrotic and the interstitia were enlarged.

Conclusion

With short-term cotton stalk administration, only a small amount of free gossypol is retained in the body. In response to long-term or high free gossypol cotton stalk feeding, however, free gossypol accumulates in, and damages the liver and kidneys.

A 100-Year Review: Fat feeding of dairy cows

Over 100 years, the Journal of Dairy Science has recorded incredible changes in the utilization of fat for dairy cattle. Fat has progressed from nothing more than a contaminant in some protein supplements to a valuable high-energy substitute for cereal grains, a valuable energy source in its own right, and a modifier of cellular metabolism that is under active investigation in the 21st century. Milestones in the use of fats for dairy cattle from 1917 to 2017 result from the combined efforts of noted scientists and industry personnel worldwide, with much of the research published in Journal of Dairy Science. We are humbled to have been asked to contribute to this historical collection of significant developments in fat research over the past 100 years. Our goal is not to detail all the work published as each development moved forward; rather, it is to point out when publication marked a significant change in thinking regarding use of fat supplements. This approach forced omission of critically important names and publications in many journals as ideas moved forward. However, we hope that a description of the major changes in fat feeding during the past 100 years will stimulate reflection on progress in fat research and encourage further perusal of details of significant events.

Enriching an intraspecific genetic map and identifying QTL for fiber quality and yield component traits across multiple environments in Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Cotton is a significant commercial crop that plays an indispensable role in many domains. Constructing high-density genetic maps and identifying stable quantitative trait locus (QTL) controlling agronomic traits are necessary prerequisites for marker-assisted selection (MAS). A total of 14,899 SSR primer pairs designed from the genome sequence of G. raimondii were screened for polymorphic markers between mapping parents CCRI 35 and Yumian 1, and 712 SSR markers showing polymorphism were used to genotype 180 lines from a (CCRI 35 × Yumian 1) recombinant inbred line (RIL) population. Genetic linkage analysis was conducted on 726 loci obtained from the 712 polymorphic SSR markers, along with 1379 SSR loci obtained in our previous study, and a high-density genetic map with 2051 loci was constructed, which spanned 3508.29 cM with an average distance of 1.71 cM between adjacent markers. Marker orders on the linkage map are highly consistent with the corresponding physical orders on a G. hirsutum genome sequence. Based on fiber quality and yield component trait data collected from six environments, 113 QTLs were identified through two analytical methods. Among these 113 QTLs, 50 were considered stable (detected in multiple environments or for which phenotypic variance explained by additive effect was greater than environment effect), and 18 of these 50 were identified with stability by both methods. These 18 QTLs, including eleven for fiber quality and seven for yield component traits, could be priorities for MAS.

Effects of whole raw soybean or whole cottonseed on milk yield and composition, digestibility, ruminal fermentation and blood metabolites of lactating dairy cows

The aim of the present study was to evaluate effects of partial replacement of corn grain and soybean meal with whole raw soybean or whole cottonseed on milk yield and composition, digestibility, ruminal fermentation and blood metabolites. Eighteen multiparous Holstein cows (133.0 ± 53.1 days in milk, 585.2 ± 54.2 kg of BW and 32.22 ± 5.32 kg/day of milk) were used in six 3 × 3 Latin squares with 21-day periods. The cows were randomly assigned to receive one of the following diets: control (CT), diet without oilseed inclusion; whole soybean (WS), inclusion of 120 g/kg of whole raw soybean (diet DM basis); and whole cottonseed (WCS), inclusion of 120 g/kg of whole cottonseed (diet DM basis). Dietary supplementation with WS or WCS had no effect on milk yield and composition. DM and non-fibre carbohydrate intake were decreased in cows fed WS and WCS when compared with CT; however, WS and WCS increased ether extract intake and digestibility. The WCS decreased DM, crude protein, ether extract and non-fibre carbohydrate intake when compared with WS. Cows fed WCS had higher ruminal pH than those fed WS or CT. Cows fed WS showed higher propionate concentration than cows fed WCS. Ruminal ammonia nitrogen concentration decreased when cows were fed WS compared with those fed CT or WCS. The partial replacement of corn grain and soybean meal with WS or WCS in diets of mid-lactating dairy cows decreased DM intake and altered ruminal fermentation, but did not affect milk yield and composition.

Mecanismos da intoxicação do fígado de rato causada pelo gossipol

O fígado desempenha uma função central no metabolismo devido à sua interposição entre o trato digestivo e a circulação geral do organismo. Ele é também o principal órgão envolvido na biotransformação de substâncias exógenas (xenobióticos), com capacidade de converter compostos hidrofóbicos em hidrossolúveis, mais facilmente eliminados pelo organismo. O gossipol é uma substância fenólica tóxica presente na semente de algodão (Gossypium sp). Com o objetivo de estudar os mecanismos envolvidos na hepatotoxicidade do gossipol avaliou-se os seus efeitos no sistema antioxidante do fígado de ratos no que diz respeito ao estresse oxidativo e aspectos histopatológicos. Foram utilizados ratos machos da linhagem Wistar, separados em dois grupos, sendo que um recebeu óleo de canola (veículo, grupo Controle) e o outro recebeu gossipol na dosagem de 40 mg/kg de peso vivo do animal por 15 dias (grupo Tratado). O tratamento com gossipol promoveu alterações na atividade sérica das enzimas marcadoras de dano hepático e um significativo estresse oxidativo caracterizado pela diminuição nos níveis da glutationa reduzida (GSH) e consequente aumento da glutationa oxidada (GSSG), incluindo, ainda, danos à membrana plasmática e de organelas demonstrados pela peroxidação lipídica. O resultado da avaliação histopatológica demonstrou degeneração dos hepatócitos.

Effects of different sources and levels of dietary gossypol on gossypol residues in plasma and milk of lactating cows

Free gossypol residues in tissues or milk from feeding whole cottonseed and cottonseed meal were measured for their effect on health of dairy cows and humans. Forty lactating cows were randomly assigned to 5 treatments in a 60-d experiment to investigate the effects of sources and dietary level of gossypol on plasma and milk gossypol concentrations in lactating cows. Five experimental diets had identical net energy for lactation and crude protein content on a dry matter (DM) basis. Soybean meal was the main protein ingredient used in the control diet. Cottonseed meal (CSM) or whole cottonseed (WCS) substituted for part of the soybean meal in the other 4 diets. Gossypol levels in the 5 diets were 0 (control), 91.15 mg/kg of DM in CSM1, 117.31mg/kg of DM in CSM2, 385.43 mg/kg of DM in WCS1, and 611.13 mg/kg in WCS2. Yields of 3.5% fat-corrected milk were significantly higher for cows in the WCS2 group; cows in the CSM1 and WCS1 groups showed no differences but both were numerically higher than the control and CSM2 groups. Milk protein concentration was lower for cows consuming WCS1 compared with the control group. Lactose concentration was lower for cows in the CSM2 group compared with the WCS2 group, but no differences were observed among other diets. Aspartate aminotransferase in serum was significantly higher for the WCS2 group compared with the control and WCS1 groups, but no difference was observed with the CSM1 and CSM2 groups. Concentrations of gossypol in plasma and milk of cows in the WCS1 and WCS2 groups were both higher than those of the other groups. No adverse effects were observed on cows fed diets containing 12.0% CSM, and no gossypol was found in plasma and milk. When WCS comprised 15% of the diet DM, yields of 3.5% fat-corrected milk were increased in cows and gossypol was detected in plasma and milk but not at harmful levels.

Tifton hay, soybean hulls, and whole cottonseed as fiber source in spineless cactus diets for sheep

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the effect of three different sources of fiber (tifton hay, soybean hulls, and whole cottonseed) in spineless cactus diets for sheep in the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil. Twenty-one sheep in finishing phase with indeterminate breed, non-castrated, and with initial weight of 18.90 ± 1.07 kg were randomly distributed to individual stalls where they were confined for the duration of the experiment. The intakes of dry and organic matter, total carbohydrates, and total digestive nutrients were not influenced (P > 0.10) by the different fiber sources (1.10, 0.97, 0.73, and 0.80 kg/day, respectively). However, sheep which received the whole cottonseed diet were characterized by a lower (P < 0.10) intake of crude protein and neutral detergent fiber and greater (P < 0.10) intake of ether extract (0.11, 0.29, and 0.048 kg/day, respectively). The different sources of fiber resulted in similar times spent feeding (P > 0.10), although the rumination time was greater for tifton hay (P < 0.10) (429.05 min/day). The digestibility coefficient of dry and organic matter differed between the treatments (P < 0.10), with the soybean hull diet showing a higher level of digestion (83.23 and 86.72 %, respectively). The whole cottonseed diet gave the smallest digestibility coefficient of crude protein (68.95 %) and greatest for ether extract (85.94 %). The daily weight gain of animals fed on whole cottonseed was significantly lower (P < 0.10). On the basis of these findings, we recommend the use of tifton hay or soybean hulls as important additional source of fiber in forage spineless cactus diets for sheep in finishing phase.

Metabolisable Energy, In situ Rumen Degradation and In vitro Fermentation Characteristics of Linted Cottonseed Hulls, Delinted Cottonseed Hulls and Cottonseed Linter Residue

Dietary supplementation with conventional linted cottonseed hulls (LCSH) is a common practice in livestock production all over the world. However, supplementation with mechanically delinted cottonseed hulls (DCSH) and cottonseed linter residue (CLR) is uncommon. Cottonseed by-products, including LCSH, DCSH and CLR, were assessed by chemical analysis, an in situ nylon bag technique, an in vitro cumulative gas production technique and in vitro enzyme procedure. The crude protein (CP) content of CLR (302 g/kg dry matter (DM)) was approximately 3 times that of LCSH and 5 times that of DCSH. The crude fat content was approximately 3 times higher in CLR (269 g/kg DM) than in LCSH and 4 times higher than in DCSH. Neutral detergent fibre (311 g/kg DM) and acid detergent fibre (243 g/kg DM) contents of CLR were less than half those of DCSH or LCSH. Metabolisable energy, estimated by in vitro gas production and chemical analyses, ranked as follows: CLR (12.69 kJ/kg DM)>LCSH (7.32 kJ/kg DM)>DCSH (5.82 kJ/kg DM). The in situ degradation trial showed that the highest values of effective degradability of DM and CP were obtained for CLR (p<0.05). The in vitro disappearance of ruminal DM ranked as follows: CLR>LCSH>DCSH (p<0.05). The lowest digestibility was observed for DCSH with a two-step in vitro digestion procedure (p<0.05). The potential gas production in the batch cultures did not differ for any of the three cottonseed by-product feeds. The highest concentration of total volatile fatty acids was observed in CLR after a 72 h incubation (p<0.05). The molar portions of methane were similar between all three treatments, with an average gas production of 22% (molar). The CLR contained a higher level of CP than did LCSH and DCSH, and CLR fermentation produced more propionate. The DCSH and LCSH had more NDF and ADF, which fermented into greater amounts of acetate.

Effect of whole cottonseed on energy partitioning and nitrogen balance in sheep

Energy and nitrogen balance partitioning was studied in sheep given whole cottonseed (WCS), vetch hay and commercial concentrates. Sheep were offered diets containing 0 (CON) and 250 g/kg WCS at maintenance (LF) and twice maintenance (HF) levels. Digested energy, metabolizable energy (ME) and heat production (HP) were measured in a balance trial combined with indirect calorimetry. Dietary ingredients were also incubated in sacco in sheep rumens. Feeding WCS resulted in decreased energy digestibility at HF (0·718 v. 0·751) but not at LF. Loss of energy as methane expressed as a proportion of gross energy intake for CON and WCS respectively was 0·078 and 0·057 at LF and 0·061 and 0·051 at HF. In both diets, HP was similar at LF. In contrast HP amounted to 0·657 of the ME for CON and only 0·61 for WCS at HF.

Apparent nitrogen digestibility was not affected by WCS consumption. Urinary nitrogen was similar for both diets at LF, but at HF it was higher in the WCS diet. Thus at HF, retained nitrogen was 045 and 0·12 of apparently digested nitrogen for CON and WCS respectively.

Ruminal degradation of organic matter was proportionately 0·87 and 0·77 of apparent digested organic matter in the total tract for the CON diet, at LF and HF respectively and 0·80 and 0·73 for the WCS diet, at LF and HF respectively. In the four groups ruminal nitrogen degradation was equal to apparent whole-tract nitrogen digestion. It was concluded that feeding WCS may decrease metabolic HP in ruminants. Utilization of WCS could be improved by taking measures to decrease urinary nitrogen losses.

Growth performance and carcass characteristics of feedlot cattle fed different levels of macadamia oil cake

Eighteen cattle (six Bonsmara males, seven Simmanteler x Beefmaster males and five Simmanteler x Beefmaster females) were assigned to three diets containing 0% (Control), 10% and 20% Macadamia oil cake to evaluate the effects of different levels of Macadamia oilcake (MOC) on feed intake, growth performance and carcass characteristics of feedlot cattle. Differences in average feed intake were not significant (P > 0.05). Average daily gains on the 0% and 20% MOC diets were not significantly different (P < 0.05) but were significantly higher than the average gain on 10% MOC (P < 0.05). The inclusion of 20% MOC increased feed conversion ratio significantly (P < 0.05) compared with the other two treatments. The control group had significantly heavier warm carcasses than the 10% and 20% MOC groups and the 20% MOC group had significantly heavier carcasses than the 10% MOC group. The inclusion of MOC did not significantly affect the dressing percentage and conformation scores of the animals (P > 0.05). There were no condemned livers, suggesting that either there were no toxic factors in the feed or, even if present, were probably inactive in the liver.

Effects of Different Protein Supplements on Omasal Nutrient Flow and Microbial Protein Synthesis in Lactating Dairy Cows

Eight ruminally cannulated Holstein cows that were part of a larger lactation trial were used in 2 replicated 4 x 4 Latin squares to quantify effects of supplementing protein as urea, solvent soybean meal (SSBM), cottonseed meal (CSM), or canola meal (CM) on omasal nutrient flows and microbial protein synthesis. All diets contained (% of dry matter) 21% alfalfa silage and 35% corn silage plus 1) 2% urea plus 41% high-moisture shelled corn (HMSC), 2) 12% SSBM plus 31% HMSC, 3) 14% CSM plus 29% HMSC, or 4) 16% CM plus 27% HMSC. Crude protein was equal across diets, averaging 16.6%. The CSM diet supplied the least rumen-degraded protein and the most rumen-undegraded protein. Microbial nonammonia N flow was similar among the true protein supplements but was 14% lower in cows fed urea. In vivo ruminal passage rate, degradation rate, and estimated escape for the 3 true proteins were, respectively, 0.044/h, 0.105/h, and 29% for SSBM; 0.051/h, 0.050/h, and 51% for CSM; and 0.039/h, 0.081/h, and 34% for CM. This indicated that CSM protein was less degraded because of both a faster passage rate and slower degradation rate. Omasal flow of individual AA, branched-chain AA, essential AA, nonessential AA, and total AA all were lower in cows fed urea compared with one of the true protein supplements. Among the 3 diets supplemented with true protein, omasal flow of Arg was greatest on CSM, and omasal flow of His was greatest on CSM, intermediate on CM, and lowest on SSBM. Lower flows of AA and microbial nonammonia N explained lower yields of milk yield and milk components observed on the urea diet in the companion lactation trial. These results clearly showed that supplementation with true protein was necessary to obtain sufficient microbial protein and rumen-undegraded protein to meet the metabolizable AA requirements of high-producing dairy cows.

Effects of Different Protein Supplements on Milk Production and Nutrient Utilization in Lactating Dairy Cows

Sixteen (8 ruminally cannulated) multiparous and 8 primiparous lactating Holstein cows were used in 6 replicated 4 x 4 Latin squares to test the effects of feeding supplemental protein as urea, solvent soybean meal (SSBM), cottonseed meal (CSM), or canola meal (CM) on milk production, nutrient utilization, and ruminal metabolism. All diets contained (% of DM) 21% alfalfa silage and 35% corn silage plus 1) 2% urea plus 41% high-moisture shelled corn (HMSC), 2) 12% SSBM plus 31% HMSC, 3) 14% CSM plus 29% HMSC, or 4) 16% CM plus 27% HMSC. Crude protein was equal across diets, averaging 16.6%. Intake and production were substantially reduced, and milk urea, blood urea, and ruminal ammonia were increased on urea vs. the diets supplemented with true protein. Although intake was lower in cows fed SSBM compared with CM, no differences were observed for milk yield among SSBM, CSM, and CM. Yields of fat and protein both were lower on CSM than on CM, whereas SSBM was intermediate. Milk urea and milk protein contents also decreased when CSM replaced SSBM or CM. Diet did not affect ruminal volatile fatty acids except that isobutyrate concentration was lowest on urea, intermediate on CSM, and greatest on SSBM and CM. Urinary excretion of urea N and total N was greatest on urea, intermediate on SSBM and CM, and lowest on CSM. Apparent N efficiency (milk N/N intake) was lower on the CSM diet than on the SSBM diet. Overall, production and N utilization were compromised when the diets of high-yielding dairy cows were supplemented with urea rather than true protein and the value of the true proteins.

Effect of partly replacing cottonseed cake with Mucuna spp. (var. Ghana) hay on feed intake and digestibility, milk yield and milk composition of Zebu cows

The effect of partly replacing cottonseed cake with Mucuna hay (Mucuna spp. var. Ghana) on feed intake, digestibility and milk production of dairy cows was studied using six Zebu cows randomly assigned to three dietary treatments in a replicated Latin square design. All cows were fed hay from natural pastures ad libitum and 1.1 kg molasses as a basal diet, which was supplemented with: (1) 2 kg cottonseed cake (control diet), (2) 1.5 kg cottonseed cake and 1.2 kg Mucuna hay (low Mucuna, LM), and (3) 1.0 kg cottonseed cake and 3.3 kg Mucuna hay (high Mucuna, HM). Dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) intake were similar for all the diets. The addition of Mucuna significantly increased DM and organic matter digestibility, whereas CP, acid detergent fibre and neutral detergent fibre digestibility were similar among the diets. The treatments had no effect on daily milk yield (3.38, 3.43 and 3.38 kg milk) or milk composition (41.1, 43.7 and 42.7 g fat/kg milk; 35.1, 36.4 and 35.9 g protein/kg milk; and 46.1, 45.8 and 45.3 g lactose/kg milk, respectively, for cows fed control, LM and HM diets). The treatments had no significant effect on live weight changes. The results showed that replacing 50% of the cottonseed cake with Mucuna hay had no negative effects on feed intake and digestibility, milk yield or milk composition.

Short Communication: Canola Meal as a Substitute for Cottonseed Meal in Diet of Midlactation Holsteins

The growing demand by humans for monounsaturated vegetable oils has provided canola meal (CM) for use in dairy diets because it possesses an excellent nitrogen profile for rumen microbes. Six midlactation cows were used in a replicated 3 x 3 Latin square design with 3 periods of 20 d each. Treatments included diets with 1) CM, 2) 50% CM + 50% cottonseed meal (CSM), and 3) CSM. Total crude protein (CP), nonprotein nitrogen, and rapidly degradable true protein (% of CP) were greater in CM than in CSM. The neutral and acid detergent fibers, slowly degradable true protein, and unavailable CP were lower in CM than in CSM. Daily feeding of 3.4 kg of CM instead of 5.6 kg of CSM enhanced milk percentage of protein and SNF, and improved total tract digestibility of dry matter and CP. Therefore, CM offers an economical substitute for CSM in midlactation diets when commercial access, cost, and quality of CSM are variable.

Effects of source of gossypol and supplemental iron on plasma gossypol in Holstein steers

Four experiments were conducted to evaluate factors influencing concentrations of plasma total gossypol (TG) in 30 Holstein steers fed cottonseed products. At the end of each 28-d experiment, steers were weighed and blood samples were collected and analyzed for plasma TG concentrations. During the entire study, steers did not show any overt signs of gossypol toxicity. In the 28 d before experiment 1, 30 steers with a body weight (BW) of 273 kg were fed a standardization diet with 15.0% Upland whole cottonseed (WCS) that resulted in a mean intake of 9.08 g/d of TG per steer/d and a plasma TG of 1.66 microg/mL. In experiment 1, 30 steers were fed 1 of 5 diets with 15.0% Upland WCS, but different levels of supplemental Fe [0, 150, 300, 450, and 600 mg/kg of diet dry matter (DM)]. Average daily gain was not affected by level of Fe in the diet, but DM intake, plasma TG, and plasma TG response decreased linearly as Fe in diets increased. In experiment 2, steers were fed diets with 15.0% Upland cottonseed as whole, cracked, roasted, cracked-roasted, or extruded. Analysis of the seed revealed that roasting or extrusion markedly reduced free gossypol (FG) content. Minor effects on animal performance were observed, but plasma TG decreased with roasting or extrusion of seeds, with the greatest reduction when the seed was cracked and then roasted. In experiment 3, steers were fed 2 levels of WCS (7.0 or 14.0% of DM) with 3 levels of cottonseed meal (2.8, 5.5, or 8.5% of DM) in the diet. Animal performance was not altered by diet, but plasma gossypol concentrations and responses were greater in steers fed diets with more WCS, because of the greater FG intake. In experiment 4, 24 steers were fed diets with 15.0% cottonseed (Upland or Pima) either as whole or cracked. Pima cottonseed increased TG and FG intakes, which resulted in greater plasma TG concentration and response. Animal response to processing of cottonseed tended to differ according to type of cottonseed. However, feeding Pima and cracking of cottonseed increased gossypol availability and plasma TG concentrations.

Silagens de girassol e de milho em dietas de vacas leiteiras: produção e composição do leite

Avaliaram-se a produção e a composição do leite de vacas alimentadas com dietas contendo diferentes proporções de silagem de girassol, em substituição à silagem de milho na dieta, e caroço de algodão como substituto parcial do concentrado. Foram utilizadas cinco vacas holandesas com 25kg leite/dia, distribuídas em um delineamento em quadrado latino 5×5. Os períodos foram de 21 dias e os tratamentos foram as dietas compostas por: 100% de silagem de girassol e concentrado (100SG), 66% de silagem de girassol e 34% de silagem de milho e concentrado (66SG), 34% de silagem de girassol mais 66% de silagem de milho e concentrado (34SG), 100% de silagem de milho e concentrado (100SM) e 100% de silagem de milho mais caroço de algodão (16,5% da matéria seca) e concentrado (16,5CA). As produções de leite, proteína e extrato seco total foram inferiores no tratamento 100SG em relação ao 100SM (P<0,05). A substituição parcial de silagem de milho por silagem de girassol não afetou as produções de leite, gordura ou proteína. A substituição parcial de concentrados por caroço de algodão não afetou as características estudadas.

The effects of varying gossypol intake from whole cottonseed and cottonseed meal on lactation and blood parameters in lactating dairy cows

Effects of varying amounts of gossypol from whole Upland cottonseed (WCS) and cottonseed meal (CSM) were evaluated in 40 midlactation Holstein cows. After 14 d of pretreatment, cows were assigned to 1 of the 5 treatments for 84 d: control (no gossypol), 931 mg/kg total gossypol (TG) and 850 mg/kg free gossypol (FG) from WCS (moderate TG and high FG); 924 mg/kg TG and 91 mg/kg FG from CSM (moderate TG and low FG), 945 mg/kg TG and 479 mg/kg FG with equal amounts of TG from WCS and CSM (moderate TG and FG), or 1894 mg/kg TG and 960 mg/kg FG with equal amounts of TG from WCS and CSM (high TG and FG). Concentrations of plasma gossypol (PG) and its isomers were directly proportional to FG intake. Concentrations of PG reached a plateau after 28 d on treatment, and they were highest in cows receiving a diet with high TG and FG. Erythrocyte fragility differed among treatments and increased with increasing FG intake. Plasma gossypol returned to negligible concentrations 28 d after withdrawal of cottonseed products from the high TG and FG diet. Serum vitamin A was similar among treatments, but vitamin E increased with increasing FG intake. Serum enzymes were generally unaffected by treatments, but urea N increased in diets higher in TG and FG. Intake of dry matter was higher for the diet high in TG and FG than for the control diet, but was similar for other treatments. Cows receiving the high TG and FG diet produced more milk and 3.5% fat-corrected milk, with no changes in milk composition. Feeding a diet containing 1894 mg/kg TG and 960 mg/kg FG for 84 d increased PG concentrations and erythrocyte fragility and resulted in minor changes in blood metabolites and enzymes, but no detrimental effect on lactation performance was observed. Indicators of liver, kidney, and muscle cell viability suggest that the higher amounts of gossypol consumed in this study had only minor effects on those tissues in lactating dairy cows.

Effects of Feeding Rations with Genetically Modified Whole Cottonseed to Lactating Holstein Cows

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield, and milk composition from feeding rations that contained different sources of genetically modified whole cottonseed to Argentinean Holstein dairy cows. Twenty-four lactating multiparous Argentinean Holstein dairy cows were used in 2 experiments with a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design, with cows averaging 565 kg body weight and 53 d in milk at the beginning of the experiments. Treatments in Experiment 1 were: Bollgard cotton containing the cry1Ac gene, Bollgard II cotton containing cry1Ac and cry2Ab genes, Roundup Ready cotton containing the cp4 epsps gene, and a control nongenetically modified but genetically similar cottonseed. In Experiment 2, two commercial sources, a parental control line, and the transgenic cotton containing both cry1Ac and cp4 epsps genes were used as treatments. All cows received the same total mixed ration but with different whole cottonseed sources. Cottonseed was included to provide 2.50 kg per cow daily (dry matter [DM] basis) or about 10% of the total diet DM. The ingredient composition of the total mixed ration was 32% alfalfa hay, 28% corn silage, 22% corn grain, 17% soybean meal, and 2% minerals and vitamins. In addition, genomic DNA was extracted from a subset of milk samples and analyzed by polymerase chain reaction followed by Southern blot hybridization for small fragments of the cry1Ac transgene and an endogenous cotton gene, acp1. No sample was positive for transgenic or plant DNA fragments at the limits of detection for the assays following detailed data evaluation criteria. The DMI, milk yield, milk composition, body weight, and body condition score did not differ among treatments. Cottonseed from genetically modified varieties used in these studies yielded similar performance in lactating dairy cows when compared to non-transgenic control and reference cottonseed.

Performance of Lactating Dairy Cows Fed Whole Cottonseed with Elevated Concentrations of Free Fatty Acids in the Oil

Twenty-four multiparous cows were used in a 10-wk randomized block design trial to evaluate the effects of feeding whole cottonseed (WCS) containing increasing concentrations of free fatty acids (FFA) in the oil on nutrient intake and digestibility, milk yield and composition, and select plasma metabolites. Two lots of WCS containing either 3 or 12% FFA were blended to provide WCS with 3, 6, 9, and 12% FFA. Cottonseeds were included in the wheat silage-based total mixed ration at 12.5% of dry matter (DM). There was no difference in intakes of DM, crude protein (CP), or neutral detergent fiber; yield of milk; or percentages of milk protein, lactose, or SNF. Milk fat percentage was lowest for the diet containing WCS with 6% FFA. Concentrations of individual milk fatty acids C6:0 decreased and C16:1 increased linearly as FFA in WCS increased. A cubic response was observed for concentrations of C8:0, C10:0, and C12:0 because of higher concentrations when diets contained WCS with 6% FFA than 3 and 12% FFA, which were higher than 9% FFA. Intake and apparent total tract digestibility of acid detergent fiber increased linearly as FFA concentration in WCS increased. Apparent NDF digestibility was highest for diets containing WCS with 3 and 6% FFA; CP digestibility was highest with WCS containing 3 and 9% FFA. Differences in milk fatty acid concentration and nutrient digestibility suggest minor changes in rumen fermentation; however, feeding WCS with up to 12% FFA did not negatively impact nutrient intake and digestibility or milk yield or composition.

Increasing dietary levels of cracked pima cottonseed increase plasma gossypol but do not influence productive performance of lactating Holstein cows

Lactating Holstein cows were fed diets with increasing levels of cracked Pima cottonseed to determine its effects on plasma gossypol concentrations as well as milk yield and composition and dry matter (DM) intake in a short-term study. All diets contained 12.8% cottonseed, 43.5% concentrate, and 43.7% chopped alfalfa hay on a DM basis. The proportion of whole Upland cottonseed to cracked Pima cottonseed in the four dietswas 100:0, 67:33, 33:67, and 0:100. Four primiparous cows were fed the diets in a 4 x 4 Latin square design, and three multiparous cows were fed the diets in a Youden square design with five periods. All periods were 35 d. Upland and cracked Pima cottonseed contained 0.64 and 1.00% total gossypol (DM) with 41 and 52% of gossypol as the (-) isomer, respectively. Gossypol is a natural defense compound in the plant that protects it against pests and diseases, but can have antinutritional quality effects when consumed by dairy cattle. Total plasma gossypol concentrations increased linearly with increasing proportions (100:0, 67:33, 33:67, and 0:100) of cracked Pima cottonseed in the diet for primiparous (4.4, 6.0, 7.7, and 8.9 microg/ml) and multiparous (4.3, 7.3, 9.7, and 11.4 microg/ml) cows, respectively. While primiparous cows responded similarly to gossypol intake, the response of plasma gossypol intake in multiparous cows differed among cows. This indicates the importance of animal variation when relating plasma gossypol levels with gossypol intake. Milk yield, as well as its components and DM intake, were not affected by increasing dietary inclusion levels of cracked Pima cottonseedup to 8.6% of DM intake for either primiparous or multiparous cows, even though plasma gossypol concentrations increased sharply over this dietary inclusion range. Although the highest dietary inclusion level of Pima cottonseed (i.e., 12.8%) numerically depressed performance of cows of both parities, these differences failed to reach statistical significance in these short-term trials with few cows.

Effects of gossypol from cottonseed on hematological responses and plasma alpha-tocopherol concentration of dairy cows

The effects of feeding whole cottonseed (WCS) and bovine somatotropin (bST) administration on hematological responses and plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations of lactating dairy cattle were examined. After parturition, multi and primiparous Holstein cows (n = 159) were assigned randomly to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments consisting of (0 or 15% WCS and 0 or 208 mg of bST injected every 2 wk starting within 7 d after calving. Blood samples were collected from a subset group of 64 cows at 14, 28, 42, and 56 d postpartum. Blood was collected from all cows (n = 159) at 75, 96 and 120 d postpartum. Blood samples were analyzed for alpha-tocopherol and total and (+)- and (-)-gossypol in plasma. Erythrocyte osmotic fragility, hemoglobin and hematocrit also were determined in blood. The mean concentrations of alpha-Tocopherol, total, and (+)- and (-)-gossypol were higher in cows fed WCS regardless of bST administration and plateaued by d 75 postpartum. Hematocrit and hemoglobin concentrations were not affected by treatments. Erythrocyte osmotic fragility was higher in cows fed WCS, but the increase was attenuated when bST was injected (diet x bST interaction). No clinical signs of gossypol toxicity were observed in the cows consuming the WCS.

Effect of mechanical processing and fat removal on the nutritive value of cottonseed for lactating dairy cows

In experiment 1, 24 midlactation, multiparous Holstein cows were used in six 4 x 4 Latin squares to evaluate extruded-expelled cottonseed (EEC) as a source of ruminally undegradable protein (RUP). Diets were formulated to contain: 16% crude protein (CP), 35% RUP (SBM16); 18% CP, 35% RUP (SBM18); 16% CP, 40% RUP using EEC (EC16); and 16% CP, 40% RUP using a fishmeal-blood meal blend (FBM16). Milk yields (37.2 kg/d) and percentages of milk fat, protein, casein, and SNF were similar across diets. Cows fed FBM16 consumed less dry matter (DM) (28.0 kg/d) than those consuming other diets (29.4 kg/d). In experiment 2, 18 midlactation, multiparous Holstein cows were used in six 3 x 3 Latin squares to determine the value of EEC as a replacement for whole cottonseed in lactating cow diets. Diets contained whole cottonseed (CS), EEC plus tallow (ECT), or EEC (EC). Diets were formulated to be similar in energy, N, and RUP. Milk yields (35.5 kg/d), DM intake (27.0 kg/d), and milk fat percent were similar across diets. Percentages of milk protein and SNF were higher for EC than CS or ECT. These production data suggest that EEC can replace whole cottonseed in isocaloric diets and can be partially substituted for soybean meal or a fishmeal-blood meal blend without affecting lactational performance. In situ ruminal degradation and in vitro ammonia N release indicate that processing of EEC was inadequate to protect the protein from ruminal degradation and EEC would not be a source of RUP.

The effects of feeding varying amounts of gossypol from whole cottonseed and cottonseed meal in lactating dairy cows

Effects of feeding varying amounts of total gossypol from whole cottonseed and cottonseed meal were evaluated in 30 lactating Holstein cows. After a 14-d pretreatment period, cows were assigned for 42 d to one of five treatments: control (diet A); 1040 mg/kg of total gossypol, and 989 mg/kg of free gossypol from whole cottonseed (diet B); 900 mg/kg of total gossypol and 64 mg/kg of free gossypol from cottonseed meal (diet C); 960 mg/kg of total gossypol and 531 mg/kg of free gossypol with equal amounts of total gossypol from whole cottonseed and cottonseed meal (diet D); or 1922 mg/kg of total gossypol and 1050 mg/kg of free gossypol with equal amounts of total gossypol from whole cottonseed and cottonseed meal (diet E). Concentrations of plasma gossypol and its isomers were directly proportional to free gossypol intake. Plasma gossypol concentrations plateaued after 35 d on treatment, and they were highest in cows receiving diet E. At 42 d on treatment, erythrocyte fragility was higher in the cows receiving the diet E, but it did not differ among other treatments. Dry matter intakes were similar for all groups. Cows receiving diet E produced more milk and 3.5% fat-corrected milk, but milk protein content decreased. Feeding diets containing 1900 mg/kg of total gossypol and 1050 mg/kg of free gossypol for 42 d resulted in increased plasma gossypol concentrations and erythrocyte fragility, but no detrimental impact on lactation performance were observed.

The effect of roasting nonlinted whole cottonseed on milk production by dairy cows

This study was conducted to examine the effect of roasting nonlinted whole cottonseed on ruminal crude protein (CP) degradability and performance in high-yielding dairy cows. Multiparous Israeli Holstein-Friesian cows (parity average 2.5+/-1.5; n = 132) with 571+/-65 kg of body weight (BW), 107+/-48 d in milk (DIM), and 37+/-5.8 kg of milk yield/d were used in the study. Cows were divided into two dietary treatment groups according to their BW, DIM, and milk production. The two diets were similar in CP, net energy for lactation, and neutral detergent fiber content [17%, 1.74 Mcal/kg, and 30% on a dry matter (DM) basis] and included either 15% (on a DM basis) whole cottonseed or roasted whole cottonseed. Ruminal effective degradability of CP, organic matter (OM), and ether extract (EE) decreased 14, 11, and 10%, respectively, compared to whole cottonseed. Total tract digestibilities of CP and EE were similar for both treatments and averaged 57 and 59%, respectively. However, DM and OM digestibilities were 6 and 5% higher in cows offered roasted whole cottonseed relative to those fed whole cottonseed diet. The inclusion of roasted whole cottonseed in the ration decreased ruminal ammonia and blood urea N concentration by 12% compared with diet with the raw whole cottonseed. Milk production, milk fat content, and production, and milk protein yield increased when roasted, nonlinted whole cottonseed was included in the diet. Milk protein content was similar for both treatments, averaging 2.92%.

Performance of lactating dairy cows fed whole cottonseed coated with gelatinized cornstarch

The handling characteristics of whole cottonseed are improved by coating with gelatinized cornstarch, but limited information is available on the effects of feeding the coated cottonseed to lactating dairy cows. Thirty-six lactating Jersey cows were used in a crossover design trial with 4-wk experimental periods to evaluate the influence of coating whole cottonseed with 2.5% gelatinized cornstarch on dry matter intake, milk yield, and composition. Cows were fed diets containing 10.2% alfalfa-orchardgrass hay, 45.2% corn silage, 15.0% coated or uncoated whole cottonseed, and 29.6% concentrate for ad libitum consumption. Coating whole cottonseed with gelatinized cornstarch tended to reduce dry matter intake, which averaged 16.2 and 15.9 kg/d for uncoated and coated cottonseed, respectively. Milk yield and composition were similar for uncoated and coated cottonseed. The yield of energy-corrected milk per unit of dry matter consumed was greater with coated cottonseed. Cows fed coated cottonseed gained body weight, but cows fed uncoated cottonseed lost weight. Concentrations of plasma urea were similar among treatments; however, NEFA concentrations were lower for cows fed coated whole cottonseed. Results of this trial indicate that coating whole cottonseed with 2.5% gelatinized cornstarch does not alter its feeding value for lactating dairy cows.

Effect of coating whole cottonseed on performance of lactating dairy cows

Thirty-six lactating Jersey cows were used in a randomized block design to determine the effect of coating whole fuzzy cottonseed to improve handling characteristics on intake, milk yield, apparent digestibility of nutrients, and blood gossypol concentrations. Treatments included whole cottonseed at 15% of dietary dry matter either as whole cottonseed, whole cottonseed coated with 5% gelatinized corn starch, or whole cottonseed coated with 5% corn starch plus 10% maltodextrin sugar. Dry matter intake, milk yield, percentage of milk protein and lactose, and yield of milk components were not different among treatments; however, the percentage of milk fat was depressed when maltodextrin sugar was included in the coating. When in vitro fermentations of mixed ruminal microorganism were conducted, final pH was lower and concentrations of total fatty acids, propionate, and L-lactate were higher for whole cottonseed coated with starch and sugar compared with uncoated cottonseed. Nutrient intake was similar among treatments, but the apparent digestibility of acid and neutral detergent fiber was reduced when coated cottonseed were fed. Total plasma gossypol concentration was higher for the cottonseed coated with starch compared with cottonseed coated with starch and sugar, but the difference was not of biological significance. Results of this study indicate that coating whole cottonseed with starch does not alter its palatability or nutrient value for supporting milk yield, but a reduction in fiber digestibility was observed. Inclusion of 10% maltodextrin sugar in the coating altered ruminal fermentation and resulted in a depressed percentage of milk fat.

Conjugated linoleic acid content of milk and cheese from cows fed extruded oilseeds

Extruded oilseeds were fed to 24 dairy cows to study the influence on the conjugated linoleic acid content of milk and cheese. Cows were fed one of three diets that contained forage and grain in a ratio of 47:53. A control diet containing 13.5% soybean meal was compared with diets containing 12% full fat extruded soybeans or 12% full fat extruded cottonseed. The control, extruded soybean, and extruded cottonseed diets contained 2.73, 4.89, and 4.56% fatty acids, respectively. Measurements were made during the last 5 wk of the 8-wk experiment. The DM intakes and 3.5% fat-corrected milk yields were higher for cows fed the extruded soybean and extruded cottonseed diets than for cows fed the control diet. A tendency for lower fat and protein contents in the milk of cows fed the extruded soybean and extruded cottonseed diets was detected. Most of the C18 fatty acids were increased in the milk and cheese when extruded soybeans and cottonseeds were fed. The conjugated linoleic acid content in milk and cheese increased a mean of 109% when full fat extruded soybeans were fed and increased 77% when cottonseeds were fed compared with the conjugated linoleic acid content when the control diet was fed. Processing the milk into cheese did not alter the conjugated linoleic acid content. The conjugated linoleic acid content of milk and cheese can be increased by the inclusion of full fat extruded soybeans and full fat extruded cottonseeds in the diets of dairy cows.

Milk production and plasma gossypol of cows fed cottonseed and oilseed meals with or without rumen-undegradable protein

Twenty-four multiparous Holstein cows were randomly assigned at calving to treatment diets using a modified split-plot design to determine the effects of protein source on milk production and composition. The treatment diets consisted of an 80:20 combination of corn and alfalfa silages and whole cottonseed at 12% of the dietary dry matter (DM). The treatment diets were formulated to contain 17% crude protein (CP) and 20% acid detergent fiber on a DM basis. One of the following sources of supplemental CP was included in each treatment diet: 1) cottonseed meal, 2) cottonseed meal plus a rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) supplement, 3) soybean meal, and 4) soybean meal plus an RUP supplement. Cows were fed the initial treatment diet for 6 wk and then were switched to the other oilseed meal source but continued to receive the same amount of RUP during the second period of the study. Milk production and composition were not affected by treatment diet. Cows fed treatment diets without RUP supplementation consumed more DM and thus more CP. Supplementation with RUP resulted in greater milk production efficiency per unit of DM consumed. Cows fed treatment diets containing cottonseed meal had higher plasma gossypol concentrations than did cows fed treatment diets containing soybean meal. Plasma gossypol concentrations for all cows in each group were below the recommended upper limit that is considered to be safe. Data suggest that cottonseed meal in the diet can be substituted for soybean meal, resulting in similar milk production and composition.

Variability in delivery of nutrients to lactating dairy cows

Dairy cows consume feedstuffs from which they derive nutrients to meet their requirements. Water and dry matter intake limit overall nutrient intake. The variability in the nutrient content of forages is recognized by dairy producers and is addressed with a laboratory analysis program. Grains, oilseeds, and by-products vary considerably in nutrient content, most often being below values listed by the NRC. Nevertheless, these ingredients are usually not analyzed prior to delivery or prior to consumption by the lactating dairy cow. Commercial feeds are regulated and must provide certain concentrations of major nutrients and list the ingredients on the feed label. Energy cannot be directly analyzed but has been estimated by in vitro, regression, and summative equations. Conversions from digestibility to metabolizable and net energy are also estimated simply from coefficients or by using empirical models based on the nutritional composition of individual feedstuffs or diets. Storage and handling losses must be accounted for, and variability in feedstuffs must be addressed through the supplier or a check sample laboratory analysis program. Knowledge of ingredients and dietary nutrient content is essential for any method of computing and delivering nutrients to meet the requirements of the lactating dairy cow.
