Elucidation of Titanium Dioxide Nucleation and Growth on a Polydopamine-Modified Nanoporous Polyvinylidene Fluoride Substrate via Low-Temperature Atomic Layer Deposition

Interfaces combining polydopamine (PDA) and nanoparticles have been widely utilized for fabricating hybrid colloidal particles, thin films, and membranes for applications spanning biosensing, drug delivery, heavy metal detection, antifouling membranes, and lithium ion batteries. However, fundamental understanding of the interaction between PDA and nanoparticles is still limited, especially the impact of PDA on nanoparticle nucleation and growth. In this work, PDA is used to generate functional bonding sites for depositing titanium dioxide (TiO₂) via atomic layer deposition (ALD) onto a nanoporous polymer substrate for a range of ALD cycles (<100). The resulting hybrid membranes are systematically characterized using water contact angle, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, nitrogen adsorption and desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). An intriguing nonlinear relationship was observed between the number of ALD cycles and changes in surface properties (water contact angle and surface roughness). Together with XPS study, those changes in surface properties were exploited to probe the nanoparticle nucleation and growth process on complex PDA-coated porous polymer substrates. Molecular level understanding of inorganic and polymer material interfaces will shed light on fine-tuning nanoparticle-modified polymeric membrane materials.

Influence of Water on Chemical Vapor Deposition of Ni and Co thin films from ethanol solutions of acetylacetonate precursors

In chemical vapor deposition experiments with pulsed spray evaporation (PSE-CVD) of liquid solutions of Ni and Co acetylacetonate in ethanol as precursors, the influence of water in the feedstock on the composition and growth kinetics of deposited Ni and Co metal films was systematically studied. Varying the water concentration in the precursor solutions, beneficial as well as detrimental effects of water on the metal film growth, strongly depending on the concentration of water and the β-diketonate in the precursor, were identified. For 2.5 mM Ni(acac)₂ precursor solutions, addition of 0.5 vol% water improves growth of a metallic Ni film and reduces carbon contamination, while addition of 1.0 vol% water and more leads to significant oxidation of deposited Ni. By tuning the concentration of both, Ni(acac)₂ and water in the precursor solution, the fraction of Ni metal and Ni oxide in the film or the film morphology can be adjusted. In the case of Co(acac)₂, even smallest amounts of water promote complete oxidation of the deposited film. All deposited films were analyzed with respect to chemical composition quasi in situ by XPS, their morphology was evaluated after deposition by SEM.

Plasma gas discharge deposited fluorocarbon polymers exhibit reduced elutability of adsorbed albumin and fibrinogen

The adsorption and subsequent detergent elutability of fibrinogen and albumin were measured on various treated and untreated polymer films in order to determine whether the relative adsorption of these proteins was responsible for the enhanced thromboresistance of Dacron vascular grafts treated with tetrafluoroethylene in a radio frequency glow discharge (RFGD) apparatus. Fluorocarbon-coated surfaces varying in the relative proportions of CF, CF2, and CF3 groups and in the ratio of fluorine to carbon were prepared by RFGD treatment of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films with tetrafluoroethylene or perfluoropropane. The adsorption of fibrinogen and albumin to these fluorocarbon-coated surfaces was comparable to the adsorption of the proteins to polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and PET. However, the elutability of fibrinogen and albumin from the RFGD fluorocarbon surfaces with sodium dodecyl sulfate was much lower than that from PTFE or PET. Other RFGD treatments of PET, such as ethylene deposition or argon etching, did not reduce the extent of albumin elutability as dramatically as did the RFGD fluorocarbon treatments. The strong albumin binding to RFGD fluorocarbon surfaces may be exploited clinically to enhance the retention of albumin preadsorbed to blood-contacting surfaces to render them thromboresistant.
