Investigation of γ/γ′ lattice mismatch in the polycrystalline nickel-base superalloy IN738LC: Influence of heat treatment and creep deformation

Near-Surface and Bulk Dissolution Behavior of γ′ Precipitates in Nickel-Based VDM® Alloy 780 Studied with In-Situ Lab-Source and Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction

The dissolution of nano-sized Ni3Al-based γ′ precipitates was investigated in the newly developed polycrystalline nickel-based VDM® Alloy 780 at the surface and in the bulk region with in-situ lab-source and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. These studies are important in obtaining a deeper understanding of the strengthening mechanism responsible for the stability and long service lives of such superalloys. We found that the dissolution behavior of the γ′ phase is very similar at the surface and in the bulk region, but small deviations were detected. The dissolution of γ′ starts at around 800 °C and no γ′ was found at temperatures exceeding 970 °C. As a result, the elements Al and Nb, which were bound in the γ′ phase, dissolved into the γ matrix and strongly increased the γ lattice parameter, as their atomic size is larger than the γ-forming elements Ni, Co, and Cr. However, this effect was suppressed in the surface area. A second matrix γ phase was detected at the same temperature range as that of the dissolution of the γ′ phase in the lab-source XRD measurements. The newly formed γ-2 phase had a smaller lattice parameter than that of the initial γ matrix. We propose that the γ-2 matrix phase is a result of high-temperature surface oxidation, which consumes, among other elements, Al and Nb and, therefore, leads to the smaller γ lattice parameter.

Deformation Mechanisms in Ni-Based Superalloys at Room and Elevated Temperatures Studied by In Situ Neutron Diffraction and Electron Microscopy

Polycrystalline Ni-based superalloys are one of the most frequently used materials for high temperature load-bearing applications due to their superior mechanical strength and chemical resistance. In this paper, we presented an in situ diffraction study on the tensile deformation behavior of the polycrystalline Ni-based superalloy VDM® Alloy 780 at temperatures up to 500 °C performed at the STRESS-SPEC neutron diffractometer at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum. A detailed microstructural investigation was carried out by electron microscopy before and after testing. The results of these studies allowed us to determine the deformation mechanism in the differently orientated grains. It is shown that the deformation behavior, which is mainly dislocation motion and shearing of the γ′-precipitates, does not change at this temperature range. The deformation is strongly anisotropic and depends on the grain orientation. The macroscopic hardening can mainly be attributed to plastic deformation in grains, where the (200) lattice planes were orientated perpendicular to the loading direction. Accordingly, a remaining lattice strain and high dislocation density were detected predominantly in these grains.

Investigation of Microstructure and Mechanical Performance of IN738LC Superalloy Thin Wall Produced by Pulsed Plasma Arc Additive Manufacturing

The IN738LC Ni-based superalloy strengthened by the coherent γ'-Ni3(Al,Ti) intermetallic compound is one of the most employed blade materials in gas turbine engines and IN738LC thin wall components without macro-cracks were fabricated by pulsed plasma arc additive manufacturing (PPAAM), which is more competitive when considering convenience and cost in comparison with other high-energy beam additive manufacturing technologies. The as-fabricated sample exhibited epitaxial growth columnar dendrites along the building direction with discrepant secondary arm spacing due to heat accumulation. A lot of fine γ' particles with an average size of 81 nm and MC carbides were observed in the interdendritic region. Elemental segregation and γ-γ' eutectic reaction were analyzed in detail and some MC carbides were confirmed in the reaction L + MC→γ + γ'. After standard heat treatment, bimodal distribution of γ' phases, including coarse γ' particles (385 nm, 42 vol.%) and fine γ' particles (42 nm, 25 vol.%), was observed. The mechanism of microstructural evolution, phase formation, as well as cracking mechanisms were discussed. Microhardness and tensile tests were carried out to investigate the mechanical performance. The results show that both the as-fabricated and heat-treated samples exhibited a higher tensile strength but a slightly lower ductility compared with cast parts.

A coherent set of model equations for various surface and interface energies in systems with liquid and solid metals and alloys

In this paper first a generally valid model is derived from the two fundamental equations of Gibbs for temperature and composition dependences of all types of interfacial energies. This general model is applied here to develop a coherent set of particular model equations for surface tension of liquid metals and alloys, for surface energy of solid metals and alloys, for high-angle grain boundary energy in metals and alloys, for solid/liquid interfacial energy in metals and alloys, for liquid/liquid interfacial energy in alloys and for solid/solid interfacial energy in metals and alloys. The latter case is sub-divided into models on coherent, incoherent and semi-coherent interfaces with the same phases and with different phases on the two sides of the interface. Model parameters are given here as an example for the 111 plane of fcc metals and alloys. For other crystal planes or other crystal structures the model parameters should be adjusted, while the model equations remain the same. The method is demonstrated on various surface and interfacial energies of pure Au, on solid/liquid interfacial energy in the AlCu system, on different types of solid/solid interfacial energies in the AuNi system, on solid/solid, solid/liquid and liquid/liquid interfacial energies in the AlPb system and on the coherent, incoherent and semi-coherent interfacial energies between ordered and disordered fcc phases in the Ni-rich part of the NiAl system. The ability of this method is demonstrated to predict surface and interface transition along free surfaces and grain boundaries and also negative interfacial energies in nano-systems.
