Abstract
A novel strategy based on phase transfer catalysis for the diastereoselective and enantioselective direct assembly of unsymmetric β,β-diaryl-α-amino acid esters via 1,6-conjugate addition of para-quinone methides and glycine derivatives is described. This protocol also provides an alternative route to the synthetically interesting functionalized chiral tetrahydroisoquinoline and its analogues.

Abstract
The fragmentation of primary alkoxyl radicals has been scarcely used in synthesis since other competing processes (such as oxidation or hydrogen abstraction) usually predominate. However, when serine derivatives were used as substrates, the scission took place in excellent yields. Tandem scission-allylation, -alkylation, or -arylation reactions were subsequently developed. This one-pot methodology was applied to the synthesis of unnatural amino acids, which are useful synthetic blocks or amino acid surrogates in peptidomimetics.

Abstract
A method to facilitate regioselective formation of multiple dicarba isosteres of cystine is described. A sequence of ruthenium-catalyzed cross metathesis and rhodium-catalyzed hydrogenation of nonproteinaceous allylglycine derivatives has been developed to achieve high-yielding and unambiguous formation of diaminosuberic acid derivatives. Allylglycine derivatives readily undergo ruthenium-catalyzed metathesis and hydrogenation to yield diaminosuberic acid derivatives in near quantitative yield. Under the same experimental conditions, prenylglycine was found to be inert to both Grubbs' and Wilkinson's catalyzed metathesis and hydrogenation, respectively, but was readily activated for metathesis via cross metathesis with Z-butene. Subsequent cross metathesis of the metathesis-formed crotylglycine derivative, followed by hydrogenation, yielded the second diaminosuberic acid derivative in excellent yield.

Abstract
The development of a highly efficient and stereoselective methodology for the preparation of alpha-amino acids is described. The chiral template, tricyclic iminolactone 7, was synthesized from (1R)-(+)-camphor in five steps in 50% overall yield. Alkylation of iminolactone 7 afforded the alpha-monosubstituted products in good yields (74-96%) and excellent diastereoselectivities (>98%). Hydrolysis of the alkylated iminolactones furnished the desired alpha-amino acids in good yields and enantioselectivities with nearly quantitative recovery of the chiral auxiliary 4.

Abstract
New 1,5-dimethyl-4-phenylimidazolidin-2-one-derived acyclic chiral iminic glycine reagents have been prepared and diastereoselectively alkylated with activated alkyl halides and electrophilic olefins in the presence of lithium chloride under (a) strong bases (LHMDS, KOBu(t)) and low temperature (-78 degrees C) conditions, (b) solid-liquid phase-transfer catalysis reaction (LiOH, TBAB, -20 degrees C) conditions, and (c) in the presence of organic bases (DBU, BEMP, TMG, -20 degrees C). In the case of dielectrophiles C- and N-alkylation takes place to afford heterocyclic derivatives. Hydrolysis of alkylated products has been carried out (a) in two-step procedures with LiOOH or LiOH followed by acidic hydrolysis or Dowex purification, (b) in one single-step under refluxing water to give the corresponding alpha-amino acid, (c) in the presence of DBU in methanol to provide N-protected alpha-amino acids methyl esters, or (d) by a protection-hydrolysis procedure to afford N-Boc-protected alpha-amino acids. The chiral imidazolidinone has generally been recovered in good yield. This methodology has been shown to be useful for the synthesis of acyclic and heterocyclic (S)- and (R)-alpha-amino acids.
