A comparison increasing the photodegradation power of a Ag/g-C3N4 /CoNi-LDH nanocomposite: Photocatalytic activity toward water treatment

For environmental applications, it is crucial to rationally design and synthesize photocatalysts with positive exciton splitting and interfacial charge transfer. Here, a novel Ag-bridged dual Z-scheme Ag/g-C3N4/CoNi-LDH plasmonic heterojunction was successfully synthesized using a simple method, with the goal of overcoming the common drawbacks of traditional photocatalysts such as weak photoresponsivity, rapid combination of photo-generated carriers, and unstable structure. These materials were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM UV-Vis/DRS, and XPS to verify the structure and stability of the heterostructure. The pristine LDH, g-C3N4, and Ag/g-C3N4/CoNi-LDH composite were investigated as photocatalysts for water remediation, an environmentally motivated process. Specifically, the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline was studied as a model reaction. The performance of the supports and composite catalyst were determined by evaluating both the degradation and adsorption phenomenon. The influence of several experimental parameters such as catalyst loading, pH, and tetracycline concentration were evaluated. The current study provides important data for water treatment and similar environmental protection applications.

Mg2-xCaxAl layered double hydroxide-derived mixed metal oxide porous hexagonal nanoplatelets for CO2 sorption

Porous hexagonal nanoplatelets of mixed metal oxide (MMO) derived from the calcination of MgAl layered double hydroxide exhibits a CO2 sorption capacity of 1.99 mmol g-1 at 30 °C, with a retention of 87% sorption capacity over 10 carbonation-decarbonation cycles and a CO2 sorption capacity of 1 mmol g-1 at 200 °C with a 40% increase in capacity over 10 cycles. The high sorption capacity is attributed to the porous nanoplatelet structure of the MMO with a BET surface area of 115 m2 g-1, which enables increased CO2 diffusion. Upon partially replacing magnesium with calcium (33, 50 and 66 mol%), the CO2 sorption capacity of the MMO increases with an increase in temperature. MMO derived from LDH, in which 66% of magnesium is replaced by calcium (MgCaAl-66), delivers CO2 sorption capacities of 1.38, 1.31, 2.50, 4.85 and 7.75 mmol g-1 at 200, 300, 350, 400 and 600 °C, respectively, which is significant for application in the sorption-enhanced water gas shift (SEWGS) process. MgCaAl-66 MMO exhibits a sorption capacity of 1 mmol g-1, which is stable over 10 cycles at 200 °C, and a sorption capacity of 3.68 mmol g-1 at 400 °C with 85% capture efficiency retention over 10 cycles. While the incorporation of Ca2+ serves multiple purposes such as increasing basic defect sorption sites and improving stability to repress the sintering-induced limitation of MMO over sorption cycles, the porous nanoplatelets act as individual sorbent units resisting volume changes through carbonation-decarbonation cycles.

Sustainable soil rehabilitation with multiple network structures of layered double hydroxide beads: Immobilization of heavy metals, fertilizer release, and water retention

The remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils necessitated a holistic approach that encompassed water and fertilizer conservation alongside soil property restoration. This study introduced the synthesis of (poly)acrylamide-layered double hydroxide gel spheres (PAM-LDH beads), which were designed to simultaneously immobilize heavy metals, control the release of fertilizers, and enhance soil water retention. Laboratory soil experiments under diverse conditions highlighted the superior performance of PAM-LDH beads in the immobilization of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The layered double hydroxide (LDH) component was identified as the key player in Cr(VI) immobilization, with anion exchange being the predominant mechanism. Notably, the encapsulated urea within the beads was released independently of environmental influences, governed by a concentration gradient across the beads surface. This release process was characterized by an initial phase of absorptive swelling followed by a diffusive phase. The impact on plant growth was assessed, revealing that PAM-LDH beads significantly curtailed Cr(VI) accumulation and alleviated its phytotoxic effects. Changes in the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content of the plants suggested that the urea encapsulated within the beads served as a nutrient source, contributing to soil fertility. Moreover, the water-holding capacity and soil-water characteristic curves of PAM-LDH beads suggested that these superabsorbent beads could delay soil water evaporation. The observed shifts in microbial community structure provided evidence for the enhancement of soil carbon and nitrogen cycles, indicative of improved soil properties.

In-depth characterization of phosphate intercalated Mg Al Layered double hydroxides and study of the PO4 release properties

Slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) form the core of innovative strategies in sustainable agriculture. Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH), known for their high capacity to sequester plant nutrients, especially phosphate, are emerging as promising candidates for SRF synthesis. The phosphate release properties of MgAl LDH (with a targeted Mg/Al ratio of 2.0) intercalated with HPO42- anions were assessed in various aqueous environments. A comprehensive analysis, including in-depth chemical and structural characterizations (ICP-OES, XRD, PDF, 27Al NMR, 31P NMR, FTIR, SEM) of the as-prepared phase unveiled a more intricate composition than anticipated for a pure or ideal Mg2Al-HPO4 LDH, encompassing an excess of intercalated phosphate in conjunction with K+. Beyond the intercalated phosphate, solid state 31P NMR speciation identified multiple HxPO4(-3+x) environments, indicating a portion of the phosphate reacting with intralayer Mg2+ to form K-struvite. Additionally, some phosphates were adsorbed onto the surface of amorphous aluminum hydroxide, a side phase formed during MgAl coprecipitation. The phosphate release demonstrated rapid kinetics, occurring within 6 days. Moreover, the released phosphate increased significantly when reducing the Solid/Liquid (S/L) ratio (58%) and further increasing in the presence of carbonate ions (90%). The released phosphate varied from 12% to 90% under different release conditions, transitioning from water to a 3.33 mM NaHCO3 aqueous solution at a low S/L ratio (from 20 mg LDH per mL to 0.02 mg LDH per mL). The simultaneous release of K+, Mg2+, Al3+ indicated the complete dissolution of the K-struvite and partial dissolution of phosphate intercalated MgAl LDH. These results enhanced our understanding of the mechanism governing phosphate release from MgAl LDH, paving the way for potential phosphate recovery by LDH or for the development of LDH-based SRFs.

Structural and Vibrational Properties of Carboxylates Intercalated into Layered Double Hydroxides: A Joint Computational and Experimental Study

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are fascinating clay-like materials that display versatile properties, making them an extremely fertile playground for diverse applications, ranging from bio-compatible materials to the pharmaceutical industry to catalysis and photocatalysis. When intercalating organic and bio-organic species between the inorganic layers, such materials are named hybrid LDHs. The structure-property relation in these systems is particularly relevant, since most of the properties of the materials may be fine-tuned if a comprehensive understanding of the microscopic structure in the interlamellar space is achieved, especially with respect to the reorganization under water uptake (swelling). In this work, we combined experiments and simulations to rationalize the behavior of LDHs intercalating three carboxylates, the general structure of which can be given as [Mg4Al2(OH)12]A2-·XH2O (with A2- = succinate, aspartate, or glutamate and X representing increasing water content). Following this strategy, we were able to provide an interpretation of the different shapes observed for the experimental water adsorption isotherms and for the evolution of the infrared carboxylate band of the anions. Apart from small differences, due to the different reorganization of the conformational space under confinement, the behavior of the two amino acids is very similar. However, such behavior is quite different in the case of succinate. We were able to describe the different response of the anions, which has a significant impact on the isotherm and on the size of the interlamellar region, in terms of a different interaction mechanism with the inorganic layer.

Synthesis of Silane Functionalized LDH-Modified Nanopowders to Improve Compatibility and Enhance Corrosion Protection for Epoxy Coatings

Novel modified Zn-Al LDH/epoxy coatings are synthesized and applied to steel substrates, providing active corrosion protection and improved barrier properties. This protective coating is made by combining Epon 828 as a polymer matrix with modified layered-double-hydroxy (LDH) nanoparticles acting as corrosion inhibitor containers. To synthesize the coatings, nitrate was intercalated into Zn-Al-LDH layers through an aqueous co-precipitation method to obtain Zn-Al LDH-NO3, and decavanadate replaced nitrate within the LDH layers through an anion exchange process to obtain Zn-Al LDH-(V10O28)6-. The intercalated LDH was functionalized by silanization with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) to increase the compatibility of the LDH inhibitor nanocontainers with epoxy resin and produce a protective coating. To protect the mild steel substrate, functionalized LDH nanopowders were dispersed into the epoxy resin, mixed with a polyamide hardener (Epikure 3571), and applied and cured to the metal surface. Surface morphology, structure, and chemical composition were determined for the modified LDH nanopowders using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Corrosion protection of the coating system was studied using long-term immersion testing and potentiodynamic polarization studies in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution.

Kinetics, isotherm, mechanism, and recyclability of novel nano-sized Ce4+-doped Ni-Al layered double hydroxide for defluoridation of aqueous solutions

Excessive fluoride removal from aqueous solutions is of utmost importance as it has an adverse impact on human health. This study investigates the defluoridation efficiency of a novel nano-sized Ce+4-doped Ni/Al layered double hydroxide (Ni-Al-Ce LDH) for aqueous solutions. The synthesized Ni-Al-Ce LDH exhibited a well-defined nanoscale plate-like morphology and a high surface area with an average size of 11.51 nm, which contributed to its enhanced fluoride adsorption capacity. XRD, SEM, HRTEM, and BET studies confirmed these characteristics. XPS analysis confirmed the presence of Ce4+ ions within the Ni-Al LDH. The experimental results indicated that the process of defluoridation followed a pseudo-second-order model of kinetics, suggesting a chemisorption mechanism. The fluoride adsorption isotherms demonstrated well fits to the Freundlich, Langmuir, and Jovanovic models, indicating both monolayer and multilayer fluoride adsorption on the Ce-doped Ni-Al LDH. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 238.27 mg/g (Langmuir) and 130.73 mg/g (Jovanovic) at pH 6.0 and 25 °C. The proposed mechanisms for fluoride adsorption on the LDH include ion exchange, surface complexation, hydrogen bonding, and ligand exchange. The Ni-Al-Ce LDH nanomaterial exhibited good recyclability, maintaining 71% of the fluoride adsorption efficiency even after four consecutive cycles. This study highlights the significant role of Ce doping in improving the performance of Ni-Al LDH as a defluoridation adsorbent.

Layered Double Hydroxides for Regulating Phosphate in Water to Achieve Long-Term Nutritional Management

Hunger and undernourishment are increasing global challenges as the world's population continuously grows. Consequently, boosting productivity must be implemented to reach the global population's food demand and avoid deforestation. The current promising agricultural practice without herbicides and pesticides is fertilizer management, particularly that of phosphorus fertilizers. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have recently emerged as favorable materials in phosphate removal, with practical application possibilities in nanofertilizers. This review discusses the fundamental aspects of phosphate removal/recycling mechanisms and highlights the current endeavors on the development of phosphate-selective sorbents using LDH-based materials. Specific emphasis is provided on the progress in designing LDHs as the slow release of phosphate fertilizers reveals their relevance in making agro-practices more ecologically sound. Relevant pioneering efforts have been briefly reviewed, along with a discussion of perspectives on the potential of LDHs as green nanomaterials to improve food productivity with low eco-impacts.

Biocompatible MgFeCO3 Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) for Bone Regeneration-Low-Temperature Processing through Cold Sintering and Freeze-Casting

Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) are inorganic compounds of relevance to various domains, where their surface reactivity and/or intercalation capacities can be advantageously exploited for the retention/release of ionic and molecular species. In this study, we have explored specifically the applicability in the field of bone regeneration of one LDH composition, denoted "MgFeCO₃", of which components are already present in vivo, so as to convey a biocompatibility character. The propensity to be used as a bone substitute depends, however, on their ability to allow the fabrication of 3D constructs able to be implanted in bone sites. In this work, we display two appealing approaches for the processing of MgFeCO₃ LDH particles to prepare (i) porous 3D scaffolds by freeze-casting, involving an alginate biopolymeric matrix, and (ii) pure MgFeCO₃ LDH monoliths by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) at low temperature. We then explored the capacity of such LDH particles or monoliths to interact quantitatively with molecular moieties/drugs in view of their local release. The experimental data were complemented by computational chemistry calculations (Monte Carlo) to examine in more detail the mineral-organic interactions at play. Finally, preliminary in vitro tests on osteoblastic MG63 cells confirmed the high biocompatible character of this LDH composition. It was confirmed that (i) thermodynamically metastable LDH could be successfully consolidated into a monolith through SPS, (ii) the LDH particles could be incorporated into a polymer matrix through freeze casting, and (iii) the LDH in the consolidated monolith could incorporate and release drug molecules in a controlled manner. In other words, our results indicate that the MgFeCO₃ LDH (pyroaurite structure) may be seen as a new promising compound for the setup of bone substitute biomaterials with tailorable drug delivery capacity, including for personalized medicine.

Controllable Doping of Mn into Ni0.075-xMnxAl0.025(OH)2(CO3)0.0125·yH2O for Efficient Adsorption of Fluoride Ions

Here, the structural, optical, and adsorptive behaviors of Ni_0.075-xMn_xAl_0.025(OH)₂(CO₃)_0.0125·yH₂O (Ni-Mn/Al) layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are investigated to capture fluoride from aqueous media. The 2D mesoporous plate-like Ni-Mn/Al LDHs are successfully prepared via a co-precipitation method. The molar ratio of divalent to trivalent cations is maintained at 3:1 and the pH at 10. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirm that the samples consist of pure LDH phases with a basal spacing of 7.66 to 7.72 Å, corresponding to the (003) planes at 2θ of 11.47^o and the average crystallite sizes of 4.13 to 8.67 nm. The plate-like Mn-doped Ni-Al LDH consists of many superimposed nanosheets with a size of 9.99 nm. Energy-dispersive X-ray and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies confirm the incorporation of Mn²⁺ into the Ni-Al LDH. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy results indicate that incorporating Mn²⁺ into LDH enhances its interaction with light. The experimental data from the batch fluoride adsorption studies are subjected to kinetic models such as pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. The kinetics of fluoride retention on Ni-Mn/Al LDH obey the pseudo-second-order model. The Temkin equation well describes the equilibrium adsorption of fluoride. The results from the thermodynamic studies also indicate that fluoride adsorption is exothermic and spontaneous.

Highly effectual photocatalytic degradation of tartrazine by using Ag nanoparticles decorated on Zn-Cu-Cr layered double hydroxide@ 2D graphitic carbon nitride (C3N5)

Pollution of water resources is one of the main concerns of many countries. This issue originates from the entry of diverse pollutants, including dye compounds, into water sources. In this work, ternary Zn-Cu-Cr layered double hydroxides (LDH) supported on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₅) decorated by silver nanoparticles (C₃N₅-LDH-Ag) was first prepared. Application of various characterization techniques such as SEM, XRD, and FT-IR revealed that the synthesized nanocomposite was composed of Zn-Cu-Cr LDH nanoparticles, g-C₃N₅ nanosheets, and Ag nanoparticles. The prepared nanomaterials were employed for the photodegradation of tartrazine in aqueous solutions. It was found that the C₃N₅-LDH-Ag catalyst outperformed their pure g-C₃N₅, Zn-Cu-Cr LDH, and C₃N₅-LDH composite in photocatalytic degradation of tartrazine under visible light irradiation. Tartrazine (20 mg/L) can be entirely removed by 0.25 g/L C₃N₅-LDH-Ag photocatalyst under 1 h visible light irradiation (200 W) at pH 6 with a rapid degradation rate constant (k) that is 4.4, 3.9, and 2.6 times higher than that of pure C₃N₅, Zn-Cu-Cr LDH, and C₃N₅-LDH component, respectively. The formation of hydroxyl radicals on the surface of C₃N₅-LDH-Ag as the main active species was approved by the capturing experiment. The finding results approved the stability and reusability of C₃N₅-LDH-Ag in four photocatalytic degradation cycles. In general, our findings revealed that the synthesized nanocomposite could be employed as an efficient photocatalyst in environmental remediation.

Cr(VI) removal from contaminated waters using ultra-thin layered meixnerite

Cr(VI) is of great concern to public health and environmental safety due to its high toxicity. Here, we report a low-cost yet highly efficient method to prepare a novel LDH, ultra-thin layered meixnerite, which performed superiorly in treatment of aqueous Cr(VI) with little secondary pollution being induced. The produced ultra-thin layered meixnerite was composed of nanoparticles with a thickness of around 7 nm, less than 9 times the thickness of a single LDH layer. The XRD patterns of the ultra-thin layered meixnerite, in which the characteristic diffraction peaks of a typical LDH were weakened or even disappeared, confirmed the successful delamination. This special morphology of the ultra-thin layered meixnerite was not only helpful to its full dispersion in the Cr(VI)-bearing solutions but also facilitated the formation of more active sorption sites on its external surface. As a result, the maximum sorption capacity of UTLM for Cr(VI) removal was 480.9 mg g^-1, far higher than that of OM (196.9 mg g^-1). In addition to electrostatic attraction and anion exchange, the ultra-thin layered meixnerite could also become restacked during removal of aqueous Cr(VI) to generate inner-sphere complexation, finally inducing an enhanced Cr(VI) uptake. Furthermore, XPS analysis characterized the promotion of the break of Al-OH bond with the increase in temperature, and the Cr-O peak increased correspondingly from 29.69% at 25 °C to 48.77% at 85 °C, resulting that the ultra-thin layered meixnerite could remove Cr(VI) more effectively at higher reaction temperatures. Therefore, ultra-thin layered meixnerite is very suitable for future application in treatment of industrial wastewaters with elevated temperatures.

Hydrotalcite-Modified Clinoptilolite as the Catalyst for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with Ammonia (NH3-SCR)

A series of clinoptilolite-supported catalysts, modified with hydrotalcite-like phase (HT) by co-precipitation, were prepared and tested in NH₃-SCR reactions. It was found that deposition of HT on clinoptilolite increased conversion of NO within 250-450 °C, and that the positive impact on the catalytic activity was independent of HT loading. The promoting effect of clinoptilolite was attributed to Brönsted acid sites present in the zeolite, which facilitated adsorption and accumulation of ammonia during the catalytic process. Concentration of N₂O in the post-reaction gas mixture reached its maximum at 300 °C and the by-product was most likely formed as a consequence of NH₄NO₃ decomposition or side reaction of NH₃ oxidation in the high-temperature region. The gradual elimination of nitrous oxide, noticed as the material with the highest concentration of hydrotalcite phase, was attributed to the abundance of oligomeric iron species and the superior textural parameters of the material. UV-Vis experiments performed on the calcined samples indicated that Fe sites of higher nuclearity were generated by thermal decomposition of the hydrotalcite phase during the catalytic reaction. Therefore, calcination of the materials prior to the catalytic tests was not required to obtain satisfactory overall catalytic performance in NO reductions.

Separation of amino acids by selective sorption through reconstructive intercalation in calcined MgAl-layered double hydroxide

Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) exhibits selectivity in the intercalation of amino acids (AAs). When the MgAl-LDH derived mixed metal oxide was treated with different mixtures of AAs, preferential sorption of one AA over the other(s) was observed as indicated by XRD analysis of the products and HPLC analysis of the interlayer AA contents in the products. The order of preference was aspartic acid, glutamic acid (acidic AAs) > glycine, alanine (neutral AAs) > hystidine, and arginine (basic AAs). Among the acidic AAs, aspartic acid was preferred over glutamic acid and among the basic AAs, histidine was preferred over arginine. LDH shows equal preference for glycine and alanine. The selectivity can be explained on the basis of the isoelectric pH (pI) of the AA. A similar selectivity order was obtained when the mixtures of AAs were treated with nitrate-intercalated LDH (direct anion exchange) although the net AA intercalated is much lower due to competition with carbonate derived from atmospheric CO₂. The high selectivity observed in some cases (such as aspartic acid and glycine) would result in the quantitative separation of the individual AAs from their mixture.

Evaluation of the reactivity, selectivity and lifetime of hydrotalcite-based catalysts using isopropanol as probe molecule

Hydrotalcite catalysts derived from NiAl and NiAlMg mixed oxides were successfully prepared by coprecipitation at a constant pH of 11. Physicochemical methods were investigated to determine their structural and textural properties. Using isopropanol as a probe molecule, the acid–base properties of the catalysts were investigated, and the evaluation of reactivity, selectivity and lifetime was established.

A New Clark-Type Layered Double Hydroxides-Enzyme Biosensor for H2O2 Determination in Highly Diluted Real Matrices: Milk and Cosmetics

A new catalase amperometric biosensor for hydroperoxides detection has been built as part of research aimed at the development of biosensors based on layered double hydroxides (LDH) used as support for enzyme immobilization. The fabricated device differs from those developed so far, usually based on an LDH enzyme nanocomposite adsorbed on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode and cross-linked by glutaraldehyde, since it is based on an amperometric gas diffusion electrode (Clark type) instead of a GC electrode. The new biosensor, which still uses LDH synthesized by us and catalase enzyme, is robust and compact, shows a lower LOD (limit of detection) value and a linearity range shifted at lower concentrations than direct amperometric GC biosensor, but above all, it is not affected by turbidity or emulsions, or by the presence of possible soluble species, which are reduced to the cathode at the same redox potential. This made it possible to carry out accurate and efficient determination of H2O2 even in complex or cloudy real matrices, also containing very low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, such as milk and cosmetic products, i.e., matrices that would have been impossible to analyze otherwise, using conventional biosensors based on a GC–LDH enzyme. An inaccuracy ≤ 7.7% for cosmetic samples and ≤8.0% for milk samples and a precision between 0.7 and 1.5 (as RSD%), according to cosmetic or milk samples analyzed, were achieved.

Layered Double Hydroxide (MgFeAl-LDH)-Based Polypropylene (PP) Nanocomposite: Mechanical Properties and Thermal Degradation

This work analyzes the thermal degradation and mechanical properties of iron (Fe)-containing MgAl layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based polypropylene (PP) nanocomposite. Ternary metal (MgFeAl) LDHs were prepared using the urea hydrolysis method, and Fe was used in two different concentrations (5 and 10 mol%). Nanocomposites containing MgFeAl-LDH and PP were prepared using the melt mixing method by a small-scale compounder. Three different loadings of LDHs were used in PP (2.5, 5, and 7.5 wt%). Rheological properties were determined by rheometer, and flammability was studied using the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL94 (V and HB). Color parameters (L*, a*, b*) and opacity of PP nanocomposites were measured with a spectrophotometer. Mechanical properties were analyzed with a universal testing machine (UTM) and Charpy impact test. The thermal behavior of MgFeAl-LDH/PP nanocomposites was studied using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The morphology of LDH/PP nanocomposites was analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A decrease in melt viscosity and increase in burning rate were observed in the case of iron (Fe)-based PP nanocomposites. A decrease in mechanical properties interpreted as increased catalytic degradation was also observed in iron (Fe)-containing PP nanocomposites. Such types of LDH/PP nanocomposites can be useful where faster degradation or faster recycling of polymer nanocomposites is required because of environmental issues.

Removal of Cu2+ metal ions from water using Mg-Fe layered double hydroxide and Mg-Fe LDH/5-(3-nitrophenyllazo)-6-aminouracil nanocomposite for enhancing adsorption properties

Herein, a new adsorbent was prepared by modifying Mg-Fe LDH for the removal of Cu²⁺ metal ions from wastewater. Mg-Fe LDH with 5-(3-nitrophenyllazo)-6-aminouracil ligand has been successfully prepared using direct co-precipitation methods and was fully characterized using FTIR analysis, X-ray diffraction, BET surface area theory, zeta potential, partial size, TGA/DTA, CHN, EDX, FESEM, and HRTEM. The surface areas of Mg-Fe LDH and Mg-Fe LDH/ligand were 73.9 m²/g and 34.7 m²/g respectively. Moreover, Cu²⁺ adsorption on LDH surfaces was intensively examined by adjusting different parameters like time, adsorbent dosage, pH, and Cu²⁺ metal ion concentration. Several isotherm and kinetic models were investigated to understand the mechanism of adsorption towards Cu²⁺ metal ions. Adsorption capacity values of LDH and ligand-LDH rounded about 165 and 425 mg/g respectively, applying nonlinear fitting of Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm equations showing that the ligand-LDH can be considered a potential material to produce efficient adsorbent for removal of heavy metal from polluted water. The adsorption of Cu²⁺ metal ions followed a mixed 1,2-order mechanism. The isoelectric point (PZC) of the prepared sample was investigated and discussed. The effect of coexisting cations on the removal efficiency of Cu²⁺ ions shows a minor decrease in the adsorption efficiency. Recyclability and chemical stability of these adsorbents show that using Mg-Fe LDH/ligand has an efficiency removal for Cu²⁺ ions higher than Mg-Fe LDH through seven adsorption/desorption cycles. Moreover, the recycling of the Cu²⁺ ions was tested using cyclic voltammetry technique from a neutral medium, and the Cu²⁺ ion recovery was 68%.

A Food-Grade Resin with LDH–Salicylate to Extend Mozzarella Cheese Shelf Life

Mozzarella cheese can be considered by far the world’s most popular Italian dairy product. Extending the shelf life of mozzarella cheese is an important issue in the dairy industry due to the high risk of contamination by several bacteria species, including spoilage pseudomonads. In this work, active packaging was prepared by coating traditional polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers of “ovoline” mozzarella cheese with a food-grade resin mixed with a layered double hydroxide (LDH) in which salicylate anion was intercalatedby ionic exchange.. This antimicrobial molecule is listed in EC-Directive 10/2011/EC of 14 January 2011. Morphological arrangement of the molecule into the LDH layers was evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and controlled release followed by UV spectroscopy. Then, active trays were used to pack the mozzarella cheeses stored for 20 days at 4 °C and under thermal abuse (15 °C). Samples from both conditions showed coliform reduction (by ca. 2 log CFU/g) throughout the storage period. Depending on temperature, total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, Pseudomonas spp., yeasts, and mold loads were reduced in the first 3 days; at 4 °C. Slower acidification and lower proteolysis were also found in treated samples in comparison to control ones. The fitting of the Gompertz function to coliforms and spoilage pseudomonads highlighted an increase in the shelf life of mozzarella cheese of ca. 2 days at 4 °C. These results suggest that salicylate–LDH-coated PET may be applied to extend the shelf-life of mozzarella cheese and also counteract its spoilage if accidental interruptions to refrigeration occur.

Synthesis of nickel-based layered double hydroxide (LDH) and their adsorption on carbon felt fibres: application as low cost cathode catalyst in microbial fuel cell (MFC)

Following their successful utilization as novel bioanodes in Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs), Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) were tested in the present investigation, as promising cathodes to reduce electrons coming from oxidation of organic matter in the anode compartment, in the presence of oxygen used as successful oxidant. Therefore, the LDH samples Ni₃Al-LDH with the ionic ratio Ni²⁺/Al³⁺ equal to 3, were synthesized and added by adsorption to Carbon Felt (CF) fibres. They were then stored separately in three electrolyte solutions KCl, NiCl₂ and AlCl₃ used as catholytes in the MFCs. Effects of the active cationic sites located inside the Ni₃Al-LDH on these electrolytes, were discussed in terms of energies produced by these MFCs. The structure and morphology of the synthesized LDH, were studied by using the analytical techniques XRD, FTIRS and SEM, while the electrode performances of the LDH-electrodes were investigated with the electrochemical methods CV and EIS. It was revealed that the CF modified with Ni₃Al-LDH cathode and conditioned in the NiCl₂ electrolyte solution yielded the highest energy harvesting for the MFC (i.e. 3.2 µW/cm²). This power density output was similar to previous clean one-compartment MFC. However, it was less expensive than an Enzymatic Fuel Cell (45 µW/cm²), making in evidence the highest cost of the material. Thus, by taking into account these encouraging findings, the low cost materials used in MFCs held great promise for practical application in electrochemical power devices and therefore fruit waste treatment. Preparation of Photoactive Transition-Metal Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) to Replace Dye-Sensitized Materials in Solar Cells

This work highlights the use of Fe-modified MgAl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) to replace dye and semiconductor complexes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), forming a layered double hydroxide solar cell (LDHSC). For this purpose, a MgAl-LDH and a Fe-modified MgAl LDH were prepared. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy were used to analyze the structural properties, morphology, and success of the Fe-modification of the synthesized LDHs. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy was used to analyze the photoactive behavior of these LDHs and compare it to that of TiO2 and dye-sensitized TiO2. Current-voltage (I-V) solar simulation was used to determine the fill factor (FF), open circuit voltage (VOC), short circuit current (ISC), and efficiency of the LDHSCs. It was shown that the MgFeAl-LDH can act as a simultaneous photoabsorber and charge separator, effectively replacing the dye and semiconductor complex in DSSCs and yielding an efficiency of 1.56%.

Fumonisin B1 Interaction with Mg-Al and Mg-Fe Layered Double Hydroxides: Removal Efficiency and Mechanisms

Mycotoxins in feed and food are highly toxic and pose a serious danger even at very low concentrations. The use of bentonites in animal diet can reduce toxin bioavailability. However, some mycotoxins like fumonisin B1 (FB1) form anionic species which excludes the use of negatively charged clays. Layered double hydroxides (LDH) with anion-exchange properties, in theory, can be perfect candidates to adsorb FB1. However, fundamental research on the use of LDH for mycotoxins removal is scarce and incomplete. Thus, the presented study was designed to explore such a possibility. The LDH materials with differing chemistry and layer charge were synthesized by co-precipitation both from metal nitrates and chlorides and were then tested for FB1 removal. XRD, FTIR, XPS, and chemical analysis were used for the LDH characterization and to obtain insight into the removal mechanisms. A higher adsorption capacity was observed for the Mg/Al LDH samples (~0.08–0.15 mol/kg) in comparison to the Mg/Fe LDH samples (~0.05–0.09 mol/kg) with no difference in removal efficiency between Cl and NO₃ intercalated LDH. The adsorption capacity increased along with lower layer charge of Mg/Al and was attributed to the lower content of bonded carbonates and the increase of non-polar sites which led to matching between the adsorption domains of LDH with FB1. The FTIR analysis confirmed the negative effect of carbonates which hampered the adsorption at pH 7 and led to the highest adsorption at pH 5 (FB1 content ~15.8 ± 0.75 wt.%). The fast surface adsorption (1–2 min) was dominant and XRD analysis of the basal spacing indicated that no FB1 intercalation occurred in the LDH. The XPS confirmed a strong interaction of FB1 with Mg sites of LDH at pH 5 where the interaction with FB1 carboxylate moieties COO⁻ was confirmed. The research confirmed a high affinity and selectivity of LDH structures towards anionic forms of FB1 mycotoxin.

Porous Layered Double Hydroxide/TiO2 Photocatalysts for the Photocatalytic Degradation of Orange II

Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH)/TiO2 nanocomposites with photocatalytic properties were synthesized by both impregnation and the direct coprecipitation of LDH matrices using a colloidal suspension of TiO2 nanoparticles. While the two methods led to an efficient TiO2 nanoparticle immobilization, the direct coprecipitation allowed us to tune the amount of immobilized TiO2 within the materials. The LDH/TiO2 nanocomposites obtained were deeply characterized by chemical analysis (ICP-AES), Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transformed Infra-Red (FTIR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). Clearly, the immobilization of TiO2 by direct coprecipitation promoted a modification of the textural properties and a net increase in the surface area. The crystallized TiO2 nanoparticles can be distinctly visualized by HRTEM at the surface of the layered material. Several parameters, such as the nature of the chemical composition of LDH (ZnAl and MgAl), the method of immobilization and the amount of TiO2, were shown to play a crucial role in the physicochemical and photocatalytic properties of the nanocomposites. The photocatalytic efficiency of the different LDH/TiO2 nanocomposites was investigated using the photodegradation of a model pollutant, the Orange II (OII), and was compared to a pure TiO2 colloidal solution. The degradation tests revealed that the nanocomposite obtained from MgAl LDH at a low MgAl LDH/TiO2 ratio was the most efficient for the photodegradation of OII leading to complete mineralization in 48 h.

The application of modified layered double hydroxides in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia (NH3-SCR)

Selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR) is very efficient DeNOx technique. According to some problems with the commercial catalyst, novel one should be prepared. Hydrotalcites are potential precursors of the new catalysts of NH3-SCR. In this paper, several attempts to apply these materials in NH3-SCR are presented.

Hollow-Structured Layered Double Hydroxide: Structure Evolution Induced by Gradient Composition

The rational design of hollow-structured materials with high specific area, advanced mass transfer, and exposure of selected sites is of great significance in both fundamental scientific research and applicable industrialization fields. In this work, we report a CoAl layered double hydroxides (LDH) nanoring evolved from integrate nanosheet in a urea hydrolysis process, showing enhanced oxygen reduction reaction activity. Detailed investigations into the evolution nature suggest that a gradient-increased Al³⁺ composition exists in the core region of the nanosheet arised from distinctly lower solubility of Al³⁺ than Co²⁺ in the synthesis; therefore, the selective etching of Al³⁺ by OH^- produced from urea hydrolysis leads to the formation of nanoring structure. Probed as an oxygen reduction reaction catalyst, the CoAl-LDH nanoring illustrates a half-wave potential lowered by around 110 mV compared to the integrate nanosheet counterpart, which might be due to the exposure of more edge sites with higher activity. This work paves a novel route for fabricating hollow-structured Al-contained metal hydroxides with defined outer edge and inner voids for multiple purposes.

Mechanistic and Thermodynamic Insights into Anion Exchange by Green Rust

Fougerite is a naturally occurring green rust, that is, a layered double hydroxide (LDH) containing iron (Fe). Fougerite was identified in natural settings such as hydromorphic soils. It is one of the few inorganic materials with large anion adsorption capacity that stems from the presence of isomorphic substitutions of Fe²⁺ by Fe³⁺ in its layers. The importance of anion adsorption in the interlayer of LDH has often been highlighted, but we are still missing a mechanistic understanding and a thermodynamic framework to predict the anion uptake by green rust. We combined laboratory and in operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and scattering experiments with geochemical modeling to contribute to filling this gap. We showed that the overall exchange process in green rusts having nanometer and micrometer sizes can be seen as a simple anion exchange mechanism without dissolution-recrystallization or interstratification processes. A thermodynamic model of ion exchange, based on the Rothmund and Kornfeld convention, made it possible to predict the interlayer composition in a large range of conditions. This multiscale characterization can serve as a starting point for the building of robust and mechanistic geochemical models that will allow predicting the role of green rust on the geochemical cycle of ions, including nutrients, in soils.

Performance of Halloysite-Mg/Al LDH Materials for Aqueous As(V) and Cr(VI) Removal

This research focused on the investigation of layered double hydroxide (LDH)/halloysite materials’ adsorption efficiency and mechanisms in reactions with aqueous As(V) and Cr(VI) in a broad pH range. The materials consisting of Mg/Al LDH and halloysite were synthesized using both direct precipitation and physical mixing methods. The XRD, FTIR, DTA, SEM and XPS methods were used to evaluate the quality of the obtained materials and get insight into removal mechanisms. The XRD, FTIR and DTA confirmed LDH formation and showed the dominating presence of intercalated carbonates in the LDH structure. The SEM of the materials revealed characteristic agglomerates of layered LDH particles deposited on halloysite tubular forms. The raw LDH phases showed high removal efficiency of both As(V) and Cr (VI) for initial pH in the range of 3–7. In the studied concentration range the materials containing 25 wt % of LDH exhibited a removal efficiency very similar to the raw LDH. In particular, the halloysite presence in the materials’ mass had a positive effect in the reactions with As(V), which was removed by chemisorption. At a low pH the LDH component underwent partial dissolution, which lowered the adsorption efficiency. Apart from the anion exchange mechanism at a low pH the Cr(VI) was removed via formation of MgCrO₄ with Mg (II) being released from the LDH structure. The XPS spectra for As(V) did not show changes in oxidation state in the reactions. In turn, a partial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) was observed, especially at a high pH. The use of materials composed of two different minerals is promising due to reduction of costs as well as prevention of adsorbent swelling. This opens the possibility of its use in dynamic adsorption flow through systems.

Potential Sustainable Slow-Release Fertilizers Obtained by Mechanochemical Activation of MgAl and MgFe Layered Double Hydroxides and K₂HPO₄

This study describes the behavior of potential slow-release fertilizers (SRF), prepared by the mechanochemical activation of calcined Mg₂Al-CO₃ or Mg₂Fe-CO₃ layered double hydroxides (LDH) mixed with dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (K₂HPO₄). The effects of LDH thermal treatment on P/K release behavior were investigated. Characterizations of the inorganic composites before and after release experiments combined X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The best release profile (<75% in 28 days and at least 75% release) was obtained for MgAl/K₂HPO₄ (9 h milling, 2:1 molar ratio, MR). Compared to readily used K₂HPO₄, milling orthophosphate into LDH matrices decreases its solubility and slows down its release, with 60% and 5.4% release after 168 h for MgAl/K₂HPO₄ and MgFe/K₂HPO₄ composites, respectively. Mechanochemical addition of carboxymethylcellulose to the LDH/K₂HPO₄ composites leads to a noticeable improvement of P release properties.

Ibuprofen intercalation and release from different layered double hydroxides

Aim: The chemical composition of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) affects their structure and properties. The method of ibuprofen (IBU) intercalation into LDHs may modify its release, reduce adverse effects and decrease the required dosing frequency. Methodology: This study investigates the effects of four different LDHs; MgAl-LDH, MgFe-LDH, NiAl-LDH and NiFe-LDH on in vitro release of IBU intercalated by coprecipitation and anionic-exchange. Results: MgAl-LDH was the most crystalline and substitution of either cation decreased LDH order. Fourier-transform infrared spectra and power x-ray diffractograms confirmed the intercalation of IBU within the lamellar structure of MgAl-LDH and MgFe-LDH. Intercalation of IBU by anion-exchange resulted in slower, partial, drug release compared with coprecipitation. Conclusion: The chemical composition of LDHs affects their crystallinity, IBU intercalation and subsequent release.

Intercalation and structural aspects of macroRAFT agents into MgAl layered double hydroxides

Increasing attention has been devoted to the design of layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based hybrid materials. In this work, we demonstrate the intercalation by anion exchange process of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and three different hydrophilic random copolymers of acrylic acid (AA) and n-butyl acrylate (BA) with molar masses ranging from 2000 to 4200 g mol^-1 synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, into LDH containing magnesium(II) and aluminium(III) intralayer cations and nitrates as counterions (MgAl-NO₃ LDH). At basic pH, the copolymer chains (macroRAFT agents) carry negative charges which allowed the establishment of electrostatic interactions with the LDH interlayer and their intercalation. The resulting hybrid macroRAFT/LDH materials displayed an expanded interlamellar domain compared to pristine MgAl-NO₃ LDH from 1.36 nm to 2.33 nm. Depending on the nature of the units involved into the macroRAFT copolymer (only AA or AA and BA), the intercalation led to monolayer or bilayer arrangements within the interlayer space. The macroRAFT intercalation and the molecular structure of the hybrid phases were further characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and solid-state ¹³C, ¹H and ²⁷Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies to get a better description of the local structure.

Preparation and characterization of polystyrene-MgAl layered double hydroxide nanocomposites using bulk polymerization

Polymer/mineral filler nanocomposites are more and more used for diverse applications. As mineral fillers, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) present a great advantage as flame retardants from an environmental point a view (reduction of smoke and toxic gases). This article deals with the use of LDH as flame retardants as compared to montmorillonite (MMT). In situ bulk polymerization of styrene was carried out in the presence of MgAl LDH modified with dodecyl sulfate (DDS) and dodecylbenzene sulfonate (DBS) surfactants. LDH concentrations used were lower than 10 wt.%. X-ray diffraction analysis of the LDH-styrene suspensions revealed the monomer intercalation into the DDS-LDH galleries and a slight decrease in the DBS-LDH basal spacing. Transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that the polymerization occurred outside the DBS-LDH galleries, leading to exfoliation of the layers on the outer surface of LDH platelets. DDS-LDH particles were trapped in the PS polymer. The thermal stability effect was observed for all LDH nanocomposites by thermogravimetric analysis. Cone calorimetry measurements revealed that only the DBS-LDH nanofiller resulted in a reduction of the peak heat released rate (PHHR) and a decrease of smoke released. DBS-LDH/PS exhibited fire properties close to those of clay-PS nanocomposite at 7 wt.% montmorillonite. The PHRR reduction remained small and the total heat release rate constant at 7 wt.% DBS-LDH loading.
