Abstract
We demonstrate in this work the practical use of uniform mixtures of a bioresin shellac and four natural clays, i.e. montmorillonite, sepiolite, halloysite and vermiculate as dielectrics in organic field effect transistors (OFETs). We present a thorough characterization of their processability and film forming characteristic, surface characterization, elaborate dielectric investigation and the fabrication of field effect transistors with two classic organic semiconductors, i.e. pentacene and fullerene C60. We show that low operating voltage of approximately 4 V is possible for all the OFETs using several combinations of clays and shellac. The capacitance measurements show an improvement of the dielectric constant of shellac by a factor of 2, to values in excess of 7 in the uniform mixtures of sepiolite and montmorillonite with this bioresin.

Abstract
Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are clay minerals with a tubular structure that can be used for many different applications in place of carbon nanotubes. Indeed, HNTs display low/non-toxicity, are biocompatible, and can be easily prepared. Moreover, the aluminum and silica groups present on HNTs' inner and outer surfaces facilitate the interaction with various functional agents, such as alkalis, organosilanes, polymers, surfactants, and nanomaterials. This allows the deposition of different materials, for instance, metal and non-metal oxides, on different substrate types. This review article first briefly presents HNTs' general structure and the various applications described in the last 20 years (e.g., drug delivery, medical implants, and energy storage). Then, it discusses in detail HNT applications for water purification (inorganic and organic pollutants). It focuses particularly on HNT-TiO2 composites that are considered very promising photocatalysts due to their high specific surface area and adsorption capacity, large pore volume, good stability, and mechanical features.

Abstract
Sepiolite is a natural clay silicate that is widely used, including biomedical applications; notably sepiolite shows promising features for the transfer of biological macromolecules into mammalian cells. However, before its use, such an approach should address the efficiency of binding to biological macromolecules and cell toxicity. Because sepiolite spontaneously forms aggregates, its disaggregation can represent an important challenge for improving the suspension performance and the assembly with biological species. However, this can also influence the toxicity of sepiolite in mammalian cells. Here, a very pure commercial sepiolite (Pangel S9), which is present as a partially defibrillated clay mineral, is used to study the consequences of additional deagglomeration/dispersion through sonication. We analyzed the impact of extra sonication on the dispersion of sepiolite aggregates. Factors such as sonication time, sonicator power, and temperature are taken into account. With increasing sonication time, a decrease in aggregation is observed, as well as a decrease in the length of the nanofibers monitored by atomic force microscopy. Changes in the temperature and pH of the solution are also observed during the sonication process. Moreover, although the adsorption capacity of bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein on sepiolite is increased with sonication time, the DNA adsorption efficiency remains unaffected. Finally, sonication of sepiolite decreases the hemolytic activity in blood cells and the toxicity in two different human cell lines. These data show that extra sonication of deagglomerated sepiolite can further favor its interaction with some biomacromolecules (e.g., BSA), and, in parallel, decrease sepiolite toxicity in mammalian cells. Therefore, sonication represents an alluring procedure for future biomedical applications of sepiolite, even when using commercial defibrillated particles.

Abstract
In the present work, the bottom-up fabrication of biohybrid materials using a nanoarchitectonics approach has been applied to entrap living cells. Unicellular microorganisms, that is, cyanobacteria and yeast cells, have been immobilized in silica and silicate-based substrates organized as nanostructured materials. In a first attempt, matrices based on bionanocomposites of chitosan and alginate incorporating sepiolite clay mineral and shaped as films, beads, or foams have been explored for the immobilization of cyanobacteria. It has been observed that this type of biohybrid substrates leads to serious problems regarding the long-time survival of the encapsulated microorganisms. Alternative procedures using silica-based matrices with low sodium content, generated by sol-gel methods, as well as pre-synthesised yolk-shell bionanohybrids have been studied subsequently. Optical microscopy and SEM confirm that the silica shell microstructures provide a reduced contact between cells. The inorganic matrix increases the survival of the cells and maintains their bioactivity. Thus, the encapsulation efficiency is improved compared to the approach using a direct contact of cells in a silica matrix. Encapsulated yeast produced ethanol over a period of several days, pointing out the useful biocatalytic potential of the approach and suggesting further optimization of the present protocols.

Polyurethane/Vermiculite Foam Composite as Sustainable Material for Vertical Flame Retardant. Polymers (Basel) 2022; 14:polym14183777. Abstract
Rigid polyurethane foams were prepared by the one-step expandable foam method using casting molding followed by forming clay-based composites. Polyurethane/vermiculite foam composites (PU/VMT) were controlled based on adding the percentage of clay in the formulation. The effects of composite modifications were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) applied to the flame retardancy explored by the vertical burn test. The results indicated that adding clay controlled the particle size concerning polyurethane (PU) foams. However, they exhibited spherical structures with closed cells with relatively uniform distribution. XRD analysis showed the peaks defined at 2θ = 18° and 2θ = 73° relative to the crystallinity in formation and interaction of rigid segments were identified, as well as the influence of crystallinity reduction in composites. In the flame test, the flame retardant surface was successful in all composites, given the success of the dispersibility and planar orientation of the clay layers and the existence of an ideal content of vermiculite (VMT) incorporated in the foam matrix.

Abstract
Elastomer reinforcement with nanofillers has been a main rubber technology topic since the discovery of rubber vulcanization. Starting from carbon black, many researchers studied the correlations between the reinforcement of rubber and the colloidal properties of the reinforcing filler. The advent of silica allowed the experimentation of a playground of chemistries at the filler-rubber interface. In the increasing complexity of nowadays car manufacturer requests, reinforcing fillers play a pivotal role in determining the set of properties, which make a specific compound suitable for its applications. This effort of continuous improvement of rubber compound properties is pushing the tire industry towards novel solutions, and the silica/CB filler reinforcing technology will likely soon accept at least a third reinforcing filler as a major constituent of rubber compounds. While all major tire manufacturers build continuous knowledge on candidates such as carbon allotropes and 2-D nanoclays, Pirelli is paving the way for Sepiolite-derived nanofillers. Being Sepiolite naturally sourced, safe, and chemically playful, this unique 1-D phyllosilicate bears the promise of changing the game of elastomer nano-reinforcement, with the optional characteristic of giving mechanical anisotropy to the rubber compound. In this review, the historical progress on rubber reinforcement with sepiolite will be summarized, with an example of application in a commercially available Pirelli product, progenitor of the Smart-Net Silica® technology.

Abstract
Polymer-clay nanocomposite hydrogel films (PCNCHFs) were prepared from caboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinylpyrrolidone, agar and nanosepiolite clay (0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1.5% reinforcement) by treating thermally in a simple, rapid, and inexpensive route. The PCNCHFs and its 5-fluorouracil (FU)-loaded composites (PCNCHFs@FU) were tested for FU release and characterized by FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, DSC, and TGA analyses to investigate their structural, morphological, and thermal properties. The nanosepiolite-loaded polymer composites (PCNCHF1 to PCNCHF5) exhibited higher tensile strength than the pristine polymer hydrogel (PCNCHF0); consequently, the thermal properties (glass- and melting-transition) were improved. The PCNCHFs@FU demonstrated prolonged FU release at pH 7.4 for 32 h. The biocompatibility of PCNCHFs was tested against human skin fibroblast (CCDK) cells. The viability of cells exposed to all PCNCHFs was >95% after 72 h of culture. The live/dead assay show the proliferation of fibroblast cells, confirming the biocompatibility of the hydrogels. The pH-sensitive PCNCHFs@FU release could be suitable for drug release in cancer therapy, and the developed PCNCHFs may also be useful for tissue engineering, food packaging, and other biological applications.

Abstract
Abstract
Sepiolite and the sepiolite-based materials were studied in terms of carbon dioxide adsorption. The pore structure and the surface characterization of the obtained materials were specified based on adsorption-desorption isotherms of nitrogen measured at –196oC and carbon dioxide at 0oC. The specific surface area (SSA) was calculated according to the BET equation. The pore volume was estimated using the DFT method. Pristine sepiolite has shown the following value of SSA and CO2 uptake at 0oC – 105 m2/g and 0.27 mmol/g, respectively. The highest value of these parameters was found for material obtained by KOH activation of mixture sepiolite and molasses (MSEP2) – 676 m2/g and 1.49 mmol/g. Sample MSEP2 also indicated the highest value of total pore volume and micropores volume with a diameter up to 0.8 nm.

Abstract
A series of clay minerals and clay-based materials have been tested to eliminate one of the most dangerous bacteria we can find in the water: Salmonella. It has been proven that the use of clays and their PCH materials can be a suitable method for removing Salmonella from water. The results of this initial study show that all the materials analyzed have great salmonella adsorption capacities ranging from the lowest value observed in the mont-PCH sample (0.29 × 1010 CFU g−1) to the highest value observed in the natural palygorskite sample (1.52 × 1010 CFU g−1). Macroporosity, accessible external surface area, and the presence of silanol groups in the external surface of the particles appears to be the controlling factors for Salmonella adsorption capacity while it seems that the structural characteristics of the clay minerals and their respective PCH does not affect the adsorption capacity.

Abstract
In this study, MgO-modified palygorskite (MgO-PAL) was used for simultaneous recovery of ammonia nitrogen (AN) and phosphate, and the effects of pH, ions, and organic acids on nutrient recovery were investigated. The highest removal amount of AN and phosphate separately reached 42.6 mg/g and 69.8 mg/g at pH of 9.0, 0.6 g/L dosage of modified palygorskite, and 180 min of the reaction time. MgO-PAL provided a wide range of pH (3-9) for nutrient removal. Mg released concentration was tested to investigate the removal mechanisms. The individual presence of four cations (K+, Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+) showed negative effect on AN removal at different mass concentrations. However, those cations, except Na+, exhibited positive influence on phosphate removal. Compared with SO42-, CO32-showed more negative effect on nutrient removal due to the reaction between Mg2+ and CO32-. The results showed that the nutrient removal amount and the morphology and composition of collected products were not affected in the presence of acetic acid. Citric acid, humic acid, and fulvic acid displayed the inhibition effects on the morphology of the crystallized products.

Abstract
The photocatalytic activity of sepiolite was examined for degradation of several dye compounds under visible light irradiation. Higher adsorption capacities and greater photocatalytic performance of cationic dyes (rhodamine B and methylene blue) were observed on sepiolite, in comparison with anionic dyes (orange II and trypan blue). Superiority in the photocatalytic activity of cationic dyes is attributed to the strong electrostatic attraction and photosensitization properties of cationic dye molecules. Sepiolite has degraded 45.3% rhodamine B within 120 min, which is the greatest photocatalytic degradation efficiency when compared with other dyes. Subsequently, the reusability of spent sepiolite after adsorption of rhodamine B was evaluated by the degradation of trypan blue under the visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic degradation performance of trypan blue by spent sepiolite after adsorption of rhodamine B increased about twice as much as with pristine sepiolite, indicating that the dye-sensitized photocatalytic process could enhance the photocatalytic degradation ability of sepiolite. Through radical scavenger tests, it was found that a superoxide radical is mainly responsible for rhodamine B degradation. The possible mechanism of rhodamine B degradation under visible light irradiation was proposed. The sepiolite could be a potential catalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater under solar light.

Abstract
A phosphorus-bearing product S-PAL obtained from nutrient-rich wastewater was reused as ameliorant for Cu, Pb and Cd immobilization in contaminated soil with three different rates (1%, 5% and 10% w/w). The 0.01 mol/L CaCl2 -extractability of metals significantly reduced with increasing rate of PAL and S-PAL in the first 7-day immobilization and insignificantly changed after 14-day immobilization. Compared with PAL, the lower metal extractability was observed after S-PAL addition. The BCR sequential extraction results showed that both of amendments were beneficial to transform acid soluble fraction to residual fraction. The XRD patterns of soil samples after immobilization evidenced that the formation of metal-bearing phosphate precipitates and the combination between functional groups such as Si-OH and metals played a key role for metal immobilization by S-PAL and PAL. Dominant phyla across all samples were Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria, and the relative abundance of Fusobacteria decreased under S-PAL treatment. The pH-dependent leaching test indicated that the metal release at a defined pH was not affected by the presence of PAL. Compared with S-PAL, the metals amended by PAL in soil were easier to release at acidic pH since the combination between functional groups and metals instead the formation of new metal-bearing precipitate.
