Mechanism of high sensitivity proton acids doped polypyrrole molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor and its application in urea detection

Molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor is a kind of convenient, fast, and stable analyzer, but the conductivity of electrode materials and their affinity with the analyte affect its performance. A proton acid (PSS, SA, SSA) doping method was proposed to improve the electrochemical performance of the polypyrrole molecularly imprinted polymer (PPy-MIP), which promoted the electropolymerization of pyrrole, reduced the charge transfer resistance, and increased the electrochemical surface area. In terms of both improving conductivity and affinity, the response of the proton acids doped the polypyrrole molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensors (PPy-MIECS) to urea was improved by 25-fold (PSS), 5-fold (SA), and 3-fold (SSA) over that of PPy-MIECS. In addition, the PSS-PPy-MIECS was validated for the practical application with a linear detection range from 0.1 mM to 100 mM, high selectivity (α = 39.73), reusability (RSD% = 4.54 %), reproducibility (RSD% = 0.93 %), and stability (11 days). The advantage of proton acid doping method in PSS-PEDOT-MIECS to urea and PSS-PPy-MIECS to glucose extended its application in the performance enhancement of MIECS design.

Innovative approaches to suppress non-specific adsorption in molecularly imprinted polymers for sensing applications

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthetic antibodies developed to bind selectively with specific molecules. They function through a particular recognition process involving their cavities and functional groups. Nevertheless, functional groups located outside these cavities are the main cause of non-specific molecule binding, thus reducing the effectiveness of MIPs in sensing applications. This work focused on enhancing the selectivity and performance of MIPs through electrostatic modification with surfactants. The study investigates the use of two surfactants, namely sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), to eliminate non-specific adsorption in MIPs. The binding isotherms of the target molecule sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on MIPs and non-imprinted polymers (NIPs) were analyzed, showing higher adsorption capacity of MIPs due to the specific cavities. The modification with SDS or CTAB effectively eliminated non-specific adsorption in MIPs. The kinetic adsorption behavior further demonstrated the efficacy of MIP+--SDS/CTAB in the selective adsorption of SMX. Calibration curves showcase the methodology's analytical capabilities, achieving low limit of detection for SMX 6 ng mL-1 using MIP +-SDS. The stability study confirmed that the developed MIP +/--SDS/CTAB remains stable even at high temperatures, demonstrating its suitability for on-site applications. The methodology was successfully applied to detect SMX in milk and water samples, achieving promising recoveries. Overall, the electrostatic modification of MIPs with surfactants emerges as a valuable strategy for enhancing selectivity and performance in target molecule recognition and detection.

Application of molecularly imprinted polymers as the sorbent for extraction of chemical contaminants from milk

Milk is one of the most consumed and balanced foods with a high nutritional value which could be contaminated with different chemicals such as antibiotics, melamine, and hormones. Because of the low concentration of these compounds and the complexity of milk samples, there is a need to use sample pre-treatment methods for purification and preconcentration of these compounds before instrumental techniques. Molecular imprinting polymers (MIPs) are synthetic materials with specific recognition sites complementary to the target molecule. MIPs have selectivity for a specific analyte or group of analytes, which could be used to extract and determine contaminants and remove the interfering compounds from complex samples. Compared to other techniques, sample preparation, high selectivity, excellent stability, and low cost are other advantages of using MIPs. The present article gives an overview of the synthesis of MIPs and their application for extracting antibiotics, hormones, and melamine in milk samples.

Cellulose-based adsorbents for solid phase extraction and recovery of pharmaceutical residues from water

Cellulose has attracted interest from researchers both in academic and industrial sectors due to its unique structural and physicochemical properties. The ease of surface modification of cellulose by the integration of nanomaterials, magnetic components, metal organic frameworks and polymers has made them a promising adsorbent for solid phase extraction of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceutical residues. This review summarizes, compares, and contrasts different types of cellulose-based adsorbents along with their applications in adsorption, extraction and pre-concentration of pharmaceutical residues in water for subsequent analysis. In addition, a comparison in efficiency of cellulose-based adsorbents and other types of adsorbents that have been used for the extraction of pharmaceuticals in water is presented. From our observation, cellulose-based materials have principally been investigated for the adsorption of pharmaceuticals in water. However, this review aims to shift the focus of researchers to the application of these adsorbents in the effective pre-concentration of pharmaceutical pollutants from water at trace concentrations, for quantification. At the end of the review, the challenges and future perspectives regarding cellulose-based adsorbents are discussed, thus providing an in-depth overview of the current state of the art in cellulose hybrid adsorbents for extraction of pharmaceuticals from water. This is expected to inspire the development of solid phase exraction materials that are efficient, relatively cheap, and prepared in a sustainable way.

Dual-template imprinted polymer electrochemical sensor for simultaneous determination of malathion and carbendazim using graphene quantum dots

Malathion (MAL) and carbendazim (CBZ) are organophosphate pesticides and fungicides, respectively. They are often used simultaneously in agriculture, and both have been shown to have harmful effects on humans and animals. Therefore, it is important to be able to measure both of these toxins simultaneously in order to assess their potential risks. This study aims to design a dual template electrochemical sensor using a cost-effective graphite-epoxy composite electrode (GECE) modified with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) coated on graphene quantum dots (GQDs) for simultaneous detection of MAL and CBZ in real samples. GQDs were synthesized initially, and their surface was coated with MIPs that were formed using MAL and CBZ as the template molecules, ethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate as the cross-linker, and methacrylic acid as the functional monomer. The GQDs@MIP were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray scattering spectroscopy. Parameters affecting the sensor response, such as the percentage of GQDs@MIP in the fabricated electrode, the pH of the rebinding solution and analysis solution, and the incubation time, were optimized. The optimum pH values of the rebinding solution were verified using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Under the optimized conditions, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) response calibration curves of MAL and CBZ were generated, and the results showed that the sensor had a linear response to MAL in the range of 0.02-55.00 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2 nM (S/N = 3) and to CBZ in the range of 0.02-45.00 μM with a low LOD of 1 nM (S/N = 3). The results also demonstrated the proposed sensor's long-term stability and anti-interference capability. The practical applicability of the fabricated electrode was evaluated for real sample analysis, and good recovery values were obtained.

Application of molecular imprinting technology based on new nanomaterials in adsorption and detection of fluoroquinolones

Irrational use of fluoroquinolones (FQs) can lead to allergic reactions, adverse reactions to the heart and damage of the liver; thus, it is of great significance to establish rapid, sensitive and accurate detection methods for FQs. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with specific structures synthesized by molecular imprinting technology (MIT) are widely used for the detection of FQs due to their high specificity, high sensitivity and stable performance. Recently, new functional nanomaterials with different morphologies and sizes, which can provide rich sites for surface chemical reactions, have attracted more and more attention of the researchers. Thus, the application status and development prospects of MIT based on new nanomaterials in the adsorption and detection of FQs were summarized in this study, providing a theoretical basis and technical guarantee for the development of new and efficient food safety analysis strategies based on MIPs.

Recent advances in the removal of emerging contaminants from water by novel molecularly imprinted materials in advanced oxidation processes-A review

Recently, there has been a global focus on effectively treating emerging contaminants (ECs) in water bodies. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are the primary technology used for ECs removal. However, the low concentrations of ECs make it difficult to overcome the interference of background substances in complex water quality, which limits the practical application of AOPs. To address this limitation, many researchers are developing new catalysts with preferential adsorption. Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) combined with conventional catalysts has been found to effectively enhance the selectivity of catalysts for the targeted catalytic degradation of pollutants. This review presents a comprehensive summary of the progress made in research on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) in the selective oxidation of ECs in water. The preparation methods, principles, and control points of novel MIP catalysts are discussed. Furthermore, the performance and mechanism of the catalysts in photocatalytic oxidation, electrocatalytic oxidation, and persulfate activation are analyzed with examples. The possible ecotoxicological risks of MIP catalysts are also discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of applying MIP catalysts in AOP are presented along with proposed solutions. This review provides a better understanding of using MIP catalysts in AOPs to target the degradation of ECs.

Current Trends in Molecular Imprinting: Strategies, Applications and Determination of Target Molecules in Spain

Over the last decades, an increasing demand for new specific molecular recognition elements has emerged in order to improve analytical methods that have already been developed in order to reach the detection/quantification limits of target molecules. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have molecular recognition abilities provided by the presence of a template molecule during their synthesis, and they are excellent materials with high selectivity for sample preparation. These synthetic polymers are relatively easy to prepare, and they can also be an excellent choice in the substitution of antibodies or enzymes in different kinds of assays. They have been properly applied to the development of chromatographic or solid-phase extraction methods and have also been successfully applied as electrochemical, piezoelectrical, and optical sensors, as well as in the catalysis process. Nevertheless, new formats of polymerization can also provide new applications for these materials. This paper provides a comprehensive comparison of the new challenges in molecular imprinting as materials of the future in Spain.

Synthetic receptors in medicine

Cellular signaling is controlled by ligand receptor interaction and subsequent biochemical changes inside the cell. Manipulating receptors as per need that can be a strategy to alter the disease pathologies in various conditions. With recent advances in synthetic biology, now it is possible to engineer the artificial receptor "synthetic receptors." Synthetic receptors are the engineering receptors that have potential to alter the disease pathology by altering/manipulating the cellular signaling. Several synthetic receptors are being engineered that have shown positive regulation in several disease conditions. Thus, synthetic receptor-based strategy opens a new avenue in the medical field to cope up with various health issues. The current chapter summarizes updated information about the synthetic receptors and their applications in the medical field.

Picomolar or beyond Limit of Detection Using Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Based Electrochemical Sensors: A Review

Over the last decades, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have emerged as selective synthetic receptors that have a selective binding site for specific analytes/target molecules. MIPs are synthetic analogues to the natural biological antigen-antibody system. Owing to the advantages they exhibit, such as high stability, simple synthetic procedure, and cost-effectiveness, MIPs have been widely used as receptors/sensors for the detection and monitoring of a variety of analytes. Moreover, integrating electrochemical sensors with MIPs offers a promising approach and demonstrates greater potential over traditional MIPs. In this review, we have compiled the methods and techniques for the production of MIP-based electrochemical sensors along with the applications of reported MIP sensors for a variety of analytes. A comprehensive in-depth analysis of recent trends reported on picomolar (pM/10^-12 M)) and beyond picomolar concentration LOD (≥pM) achieved using MIPs sensors is reported. Finally, we discuss the challenges faced and put forward future perspectives along with our conclusion.

Factors Affecting Preparation of Molecularly Imprinted Polymer and Methods on Finding Template-Monomer Interaction as the Key of Selective Properties of the Materials

Molecular imprinting is a technique for creating artificial recognition sites on polymer matrices that complement the template in terms of size, shape, and spatial arrangement of functional groups. The main advantage of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIP) as the polymer for use with a molecular imprinting technique is that they have high selectivity and affinity for the target molecules used in the molding process. The components of a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer are template, functional monomer, cross-linker, solvent, and initiator. Many things determine the success of a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer, but the Molecularly Imprinted Polymer component and the interaction between template-monomers are the most critical factors. This review will discuss how to find the interaction between template and monomer in Molecularly Imprinted Polymer before polymerization and after polymerization and choose the suitable component for MIP development. Computer simulation, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Proton-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (¹H-NMR) are generally used to determine the type and strength of intermolecular interaction on pre-polymerization stage. In turn, Suspended State Saturation Transfer Difference High Resolution/Magic Angle Spinning (STD HR/MAS) NMR, Raman Spectroscopy, and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) and Fluorescence Spectroscopy are used to detect chemical interaction after polymerization. Hydrogen bonding is the type of interaction that is becoming a focus to find on all methods as this interaction strongly contributes to the affinity of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs).

Colorimetric Sensing of Amoxicillin Facilitated by Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

The scope of the presented research orientates itself towards the development of a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP)-based dye displacement assay for the colorimetric detection of the antibiotic amoxicillin in aqueous medium. With this in mind, the initial development of an MIP capable of such a task sets focus on monolithic bulk polymerization to assess monomer/crosslinker combinations that have potential towards the binding of amoxicillin. The best performing composition (based on specificity and binding capacity) is utilized in the synthesis of MIP particles by emulsion polymerization, yielding particles that prove to be more homogenous in size and morphology compared to that of the crushed monolithic MIP, which is an essential trait when it comes to the accuracy of the resulting assay. The specificity and selectivity of the emulsion MIP proceeds to be highlighted, demonstrating a higher affinity towards amoxicillin compared to other compounds of the aminopenicillin class (ampicillin and cloxacillin). Conversion of the polymeric receptor is then undertaken, identifying a suitable dye for the displacement assay by means of binding experiments with malachite green, crystal violet, and mordant orange. Once identified, the optimal dye is then loaded onto the synthetic receptor, and the displaceability of the dye deduced by means of a dose response experiment. Alongside the sensitivity, the selectivity of the assay is scrutinized against cloxacillin and ampicillin. Yielding a dye displacement assay that can be used (semi-)quantitatively in a rapid manner.

Recent Advances in Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE) Based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) for Analysis of Hormones

Steroid hormones are active substances that are necessary in the normal functioning of all physiological activities in the body, such as sexual characteristics, metabolism, and mood control. They are also widely used as exogenous chemicals in medical and pharmaceutical applications as treatments and at times growth promoters in animal farming. The vast application of steroid hormones has resulted in them being found in different matrices, such as food, environmental, and biological samples. The presence of hormones in such matrices means that they can easily come into contact with humans and animals as exogenous compounds, resulting in abnormal concentrations that can lead to endocrine disruption. This makes their determination in different matrices a vital part of pollutant management and control. Although advances in analytical instruments are constant, it has been determined that these instruments still require some sample preparation steps to be able to determine the occurrence of pollutants in the complex matrices in which they occur. Advances are still being made in sample preparation to ensure easier, selective, and sensitive analysis of complex matrices. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been termed as advanced solid-phase (SPE) materials for the selective extraction and preconcentration of hormones in complex matrices. This review explores the preparation and application of MIPs for the determination of steroid hormones in different sample types.

Sample treatment based on molecularly imprinted polymers for the analysis of veterinary drugs in food samples: a review

The use of veterinary drugs in medical treatments and in the livestock industry is a recurrent practice. When applied in subtherapeutic doses over prolonged times, they can also act as growth promoters. However, residues of these substances in foods present a risk to human health. Their analysis is thus important and can help guarantee consumer safety. The critical point in each analytical technique is the sample treatment and the analytical matrix complexity. The present manuscript summarizes the development, type of synthesis, characterization, and application of molecularly imprinted polymers in the separation, identification, and quantification techniques for the determination of veterinary drug residues in food samples in extraction, clean-up, isolation, and pre-concentration systems. Synthesized sorbents with specific recognition properties improve the interactions between the analytes and the polymeric sorbents, providing better analysis conditions and advantages in comparison with commercial sorbents in terms of high selectivity, analytical sensitivity, easy performance, and low cost analysis.
