Natural versus synthetic anesthetic for transport of live fish: A review

Oxidative responses in small juveniles of Colossoma macropomum anesthetized and sedated with Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil

This study evaluated the use of essential oil of Ocimum gratissimum (EOOG) for anesthesia and in transport of Colossoma macropomum. Experiment 1, Test 1, anesthesia induction and recovery times were determined using different EOOG concentrations (0, 20, 50, 100, 200, 300 mg L-1), with two size classes: Juveniles I (0.86 g) and Juveniles II (11.46 g) (independent tests in a completely randomized design). Based on the results of Test 1, in Test 2 Juveniles II were exposed to EOOG concentrations: 0, 20, 100 mg L-1. Tissue samples were collected immediately after induction and 1 h post-recovery, to assess oxidative status variables. Experiment 2, Juveniles I (0.91 g) and Juveniles II (14.76 g) were submitted to transport in water with different concentrations of EOOG (0, 5, 10 mg L-1) (independent tests in a completely randomized design). The effects on oxidative status variables were evaluated. Concentrations between 50 and 200 mg L-1 EOOG can be indicated for Juveniles I, while concentrations between 50 and 100 mg L-1 EOOG for Juveniles II. The concentration of 100 mg L-1 EOOG was able to prevent oxidative damage in the liver. In Experiment 2, the concentrations of 5 and 10 mg L-1 EOOG added to the transport water caused sedation for both studied size classes of juveniles and did not cause oscillations in water quality variables nor any mortality. The concentration of 10 mg L-1 EOOG improved the oxidative status. It can be concluded that EOOG can be used for anesthesia and transport of C. macropomum.

Assessment of the molecular mechanism in fish using eugenol as anesthesia based on network pharmacology

Eugenol is a commonly used fish anesthetic, but its mechanism of action is not fully understood. This study employed network pharmacology, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation to explore the anesthetic targets of eugenol in fish. Initially, 63 potential targets for eugenol anesthesia were identified using databases such as SwissTarget, TargetNet, GeneCards, OMIM, and TTD. The DAVID database was utilized to analyze the GO functions and KEGG pathways of these targets, revealing 384 GO enrichment terms and 43 KEGG pathways. These terms involved neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, calcium signaling pathway, and synaptic transmission. Subsequently, AutodockTools software facilitated molecular docking with targets in the KEGG pathway for "neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction." The results showed that eugenol had a strong affinity with these proteins. Concurrently, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted on the proteins with the top four lowest binding energies (Cnr1, Oprk1, Nr3c1, and Chrm5a) in the presence of eugenol. The eugenol-protein complexes remained stable and equilibrated within the dynamic environment. The results indicated that eugenol-anesthesia might affect membrane receptors, neurotransmitters, and ion signaling. This study elucidates the anesthetic mechanism of eugenol, enriches the primary data on fish anesthesia, and offers new analytical tools for understanding the action mechanisms of fishery drugs.

Farmed fish welfare research status in Latin America: A review

Latin America (LATAM) plays an important role in the world's production of aquatic animals and is the second most productive region in the world. Chile, Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Perú contribute 87% of LATAM aquaculture production. The fish welfare in aquaculture is of increasing public concern globally, and LATAM is no exception, growing in importance for fish farmers, authorities, and scientists. Although the topic is somewhat controversial, the welfare status of farmed fish has direct implications for their production and the sustainability of the industry. Therefore, this study analyses scientific papers on animal welfare in farmed fish, from the six countries in LATAM with the highest aquaculture production. The main objectives were to quantify the number of papers published between 2000 and 2023 on fish welfare by using scientific databases. A total of 285 papers were found for the period analysed. The country with the largest number of publications was Brazil (75.79%), followed by Chile (13.33%), Mexico (7.02%), Peru (1.75%), Ecuador, and Colombia (1.05%). Nile tilapia was the most studied species, appearing in 30.18% of the publications, with most of the studies mainly dealing with nutrition (32.28%). The growth of aquaculture is leading to joint efforts to generate knowledge on welfare issues, especially in poorly studied species with high production, to create policies that help minimize welfare risks. Given this, the insights generated by this review could be a useful addition to approaches investigating the trends and concepts of fish welfare in LATAM.

Efficacy of essential oil from ginger (Zingiber officinale) for anesthesia and transport sedation of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus)

This study evaluated the anesthetic and sedative effects of the essential oil of Zingiber officinale (EOZO) on juvenile pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus). Experiment 1 evaluated concentrations of 0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg L-1 EOZO for times of induction and recovery from anesthesia. Furthermore, hematological responses and residual components of EOZO in plasma were determined immediately after anesthesia. Experiment 2 evaluated the effect of 0, 10, 20 and 30 mg L-1 EOZO on water quality, blood variables and residual components of EOZO in plasma and tissues (muscle and liver) immediately after 2 h of transport. Survival was 100%. The three main compounds of EOZO [zingiberene (32.27%), β-sesquiphellandrene (18.42%) and β-bisabolene (13.93%)] were observed in animal plasma and tissues (muscle and liver) after anesthesia and transport, demonstrating a direct linear effect among the evaluated concentrations. The concentration of 200 mg L-1 EOZO promoted surgical anesthesia of pacu and prevented an increase in monocyte and neutrophil levels, yet did not alter other hematological parameters. The use of 30 mg L-1 EOZO has a sedative effect on juvenile pacu, thereby reducing oxygen consumption during transport. Furthermore, the use of 30 mg L-1 EOZO in transport water prevented an increase in hemoglobin and hematocrit, with minimal influences on other blood variables.

Determination of Eugenol Residues in Fish Tissue, Transport, and Temporary Water of Aquatic Product by Gas Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry with Application of the Electrospun Nanofibrous Membrane

Using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and electrospun nanofibrous membrane, we developed and validated a simple, rapid, and sensitive methodology for quantifying eugenol residues in fish tissue and water samples. Fish tissue extract and water samples (315 samples) collected from three southeastern China provinces (Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Fujian), originating from eight provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, Guangdong, Fujian, Anhui, Shanghai, and Jiangxi, from April 2021 to April 2023 were filtered with an electrospun nanofiber membrane, extracted with trichloromethane/n-hexane, and directly concentrated to dry after simple purification. An internal standard of p-terphenyl in n-hexane and 5-µL injection volumes of the solutions was used to analyze eugenol via internal calibration with a minimum concentration of 0.5 µg/L in water samples and 0.1 µg/kg in aquatic product samples. The highest amount of eugenol was detected in Fujian province, possibly due to the higher temperature during transportation, while the lowest amount was found in Shanghai, which mainly uses temporary fish-culture devices. This is a fast, inexpensive, and effective method for testing large quantities of fish water and meat samples.

Optimizing Anesthetic Practices for Mud Crab: A Comparative Study of Clove Oil, MS-222, Ethanol, and Magnesium Chloride

Anesthesia serves as an effective method to mitigate the stress response in aquatic animals during aquaculture and product transportation. In this study, we assessed the anesthetic efficacy of clove oil, tricaine methane-sulfonate (MS-222), ethanol, and magnesium chloride by anesthesia duration, recovery time, 24-hour survival rate, and the behavior of mud crabs (Scylla paramamosain). Additionally, the optimal anesthetic concentration for varying body weights of mud crabs was also investigated. The results revealed that clove oil emerged as the optimal anesthetic for mud crabs, with a 24-hour survival rate surpassing those observed in MS-222 and magnesium chloride treatments. Ethanol caused amputation and hyperactivity in mud crabs. Regression analyses between the optimal anesthetic concentration of clove oil and the weight categories of 0.03-27.50 g and 27.50-399.73 g for mud crabs yielded the following equations: y = 0.0036 x3 - 0.1629 x2 + 1.7314 x + 4.085 (R2 = 0.7115) and y = 0.0437 x + 2.9461 (R2 = 0.9549). Clove oil exhibited no significant impact on serum cortisol, glucose, lactate content, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities, or superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in mud crabs across different treatment groups. Anesthesia induced by clove oil in mud crabs resulted in an increase in inhibitory neurotransmitters such as glycine. However, the recovery from anesthesia was associated with elevated levels of the excitatory neurotransmitters L-aspartic acid and glutamate. In conclusion, clove oil proves to be a safe and optimal anesthetic agent for mud crabs, exerting no physiological stress on the species.

Fluorescent microsphere-based lateral-flow immunoassay for rapid and sensitive determination of eugenols

In this study, a sensitive monoclonal antibody (mAb) 1B5 against eugenols was prepared based on a novel hapten. Based on this mAb, a paper-based lateral-flow immunoassay (LFIA) was developed using Eu-fluorescent microspheres sensor, that could achieve qualitative and quantitative detection of eugenols within 10 min. Results showed colorimetric values observed by the naked eye were 12.3 µg/kg, 12.3 µg/kg, 37 µg/kg and 111 µg/kg for eugenol, isoeugenol, methyl eugenol, and methyl isoeugenol, respectively, in both water and fish samples. For quantitative detection of eugenol, isoeugenol, methyl eugenol and methyl isoeugenol, the detection ranges were 4.49-48.4 µg/kg, 6.02-66.8 µg/kg, 16.5-150 µg/kg and 47.9-710 µg/kg in water, and 3.9-30.9 µg/kg, 5.9-62.6 µg/kg, 16.7-255 µg/kg, and 44.5-890 µg/kg in fish, respectively. The recovery test and detection in fish demonstrated the reliability of the LFIA in real samples. Therefore, the developed LFIA produced a promising alternative tool for the rapid on-site detection of eugenols.

Clove Oil-Nanostructured Lipid Carriers: A Platform of Herbal Anesthetics in Whiteleg Shrimp (Penaeus vannamei)

Whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) have been vulnerable to the stress induced by different aquaculture operations such as capture, handling, and transportation. In this study, we developed a novel clove oil-nanostructured lipid carrier (CO-NLC) to enhance the water-soluble capability and improve its anesthetic potential in whiteleg shrimp. The physicochemical characteristics, stability, and drug release capacity were assessed in vitro. The anesthetic effect and biodistribution were fully investigated in the shrimp body as well as the acute multiple-dose toxicity study. The average particle size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential value of the CO-NLCs were 175 nm, 0.12, and −48.37 mV, respectively, with a spherical shape that was stable for up to 3 months of storage. The average encapsulation efficiency of the CO-NLCs was 88.55%. In addition, the CO-NLCs were able to release 20% of eugenol after 2 h, which was lower than the standard (STD)-CO. The CO-NLC at 50 ppm observed the lowest anesthesia (2.2 min), the fastest recovery time (3.3 min), and the most rapid clearance (30 min) in shrimp body biodistribution. The results suggest that the CO-NLC could be a potent alternative nanodelivery platform for increasing the anesthetic activity of clove oil in whiteleg shrimp (P. vannamei).

Essential oil of Magnolia denudata is an effective anesthetic for spotted seabass (Lateolabrax maculatus): a test of its effect on blood biochemistry, physiology, and gill morphology

Magnolia denudata is a well-known ornamental tree in China due to its beautiful blossoms, and it has been used as an analgesic to treat human headaches. This study investigated the anesthetic potential and physiological response of the essential oil of M. denudata flowers on spotted seabass Lateolabrax maculatus. Fish (mean ± SD, 164.16 ± 15.40 g) were individually exposed to different concentrations of M. denudata essential oil (MDO, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 mg/L) and eugenol (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 mg/L) to investigate anesthetic efficacy. Based on the ideal time criterion for anesthetic induction (< 3 min) and recovery (< 10 min), the lowest effective concentration for spotted seabass was 100 mg/L for MDO and 60 mg/L for eugenol. The physiological and histopathological damage in the gill of L. maculatus after using MDO and eugenol was also evaluated at the minimum dose inducing deep anesthesia, and at 0, 6, and 24 h after recovery. The results showed that MDO and eugenol anesthesia alleviated the levels of cortisol and glucose and the lactic dehydrogenase activity induced by handling. Compared with eugenol, MDO also caused secondary stress to the body, but MDO caused minor physiological responses and histological changes in the gills. This study suggests that MDO is an effective anesthetic for spotted seabass.

Physiological Response of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) to Long-Term Exposure to an Anesthetic Obtained from Heterosigma akashiwo

Despite the invaluable role of anesthetics as a tool for ensuring animal welfare in stressful situations, there is currently a lack of anesthetic drugs that meet the requirements of intensive aquaculture. In response to the growing interest in anesthetic substances of natural origin, this study evaluated the physiological and health impact of an anesthetic based on an extract of the microalga Heterosigma akashiwo on juvenile salmon (Salmo salar) exposed for a period of 72 h. To simulate a condition closer to reality where fish are subjected to stimuli (e.g., transport), the animals were exposed to 50 mg L⁻¹ of algal extract and to physical stress. Functional, physiological, and histological parameters were evaluated in blood and tissues at different sampling periods (0, 24, and 72 h). There was no mortality and the induction and recovery times observed were within the established criteria for anesthetic efficacy. The anesthetic extract did not induce any side effects, such as stress or metabolic damage, indicating that this extract is a viable option for supporting fish welfare during deleterious events. This study provides information to support that the anesthetic extract tested, derived from H. akashiwo, is a promising candidate drug for operations requiring sedation (e.g., Salmonid transport).

Effects of Melissa officinalis L. Essential Oil in Comparison with Anaesthetics on Gill Tissue Damage, Liver Metabolism and Immune Parameters in Sea Bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) during Simulated Live Transport

In the current study, Melissa officinalis L. essential oil (MOEO), a novel sedative and anaesthetic, was employed in transport water to obtain a lower stress effect and higher survival rate for live marine fish. The effect of MOEO and various types of anaesthetics, administered at a low temperature on gill morphology, liver function and immunological parameters of living sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) subjected to transport stress, was evaluated to optimize the anaesthetic and sedative concentrations during live sea bass transport. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of sea bass, subjected to simulated live transport for 72 h, demonstrated that the changes in the morphological characteristics of gill tissue treated with 40 mg/L MOEO (A3 group) were minimal in comparison to those observed in untreated sea bass. The results of pyruvate kinase (PK), phosphofructokinase (PFK), hexokinase (HK), hepatic glycogen (Gly), superoxide dismutase (SOD), lipid peroxides (MDA) and Caspase-3 assays indicated that the glycolysis rate, energy consumption, lipid peroxidation and hepatocyte apoptosis were the lowest in the A3 group. The values of the two immune parameters, lysozyme (LZM) and fish immunoglobulin M (IgM), indicated the strongest immunity ability in the A3 group. After 12 h recovery, sea bass treated with 30 mg/L MS-222 (B group) displayed a 100% survival rate, sea bass treated with 20 mg/L (A2 group) and 40 mg/L (A3 group) MOEO displayed a 96% survival rate, sea bass treated with 20 mg/L eugenol (C group) had a 94% survival rate, and untreated sea bass (CK group) had a 50% survival rate. Therefore, the addition MOEO to the transport water had anaesthetic and sedative effects similar to MS-222 and eugenol. The results confirmed that the addition of MOEO to the transport water could reduce tissue damage, energy metabolism, and the oxidative stress response in sea bass during transport.

MS-222 and Propofol Sedation during and after the Simulated Transport of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

The use of anesthetics has been suggested as a strategy to hamper live fish transport-induced stress. Still, there is insufficient data available on the use of alternative anesthetics to MS-222. This study investigated the use of propofol to mitigate stress in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, 143.8 ± 20.9 g and 20.4 ± 0.9 cm) during a 6 h simulated transport. Individuals (n = 7) were divided into three groups: control, 40 mg L-1 MS-222, and 0.8 mg L-1 propofol. A naïve group non-transported was also considered. During the 6 h transport and 24 h after, the response to external stimuli, opercular movements, water quality parameters, behavior, blood hematology and other physiological values, the histopathology of the gills, the quality of the fillet, and oxidative-stress changes in gills, muscle, brain, and liver were evaluated. Propofol increased swimming activity of fish but decreased opercular movements and responses to external stimuli, indicating oscillations of the sedation depth. Water pH and glucose levels increased, while hematocrit (HCT) and lactate decreased in propofol groups at 6 h. At this time-point, MS-222 also induced a decrease in the HCT and lactate levels while increasing cortisol levels. Despite these effects, the stress-related behaviors lessened with anesthetics compared to the control group. After the recovery period, physiological responses normalized in animals from both anesthetic groups, but the control still had high cortisol levels. Overall, propofol is a good alternative for the transportation of this species, showing efficient sedation without compromising health or fillet quality. However, further pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics knowledge is required to support its use in aquaculture settings.

Gill morphology and morphometry of the facultative air-breathing armoured catfish, Corydoras paleatus, in relation on aquatic respiration

The Neotropical armoured catfish Corydoras paleatus is a facultative air-breathing teleost commonly exported as ornamental fish. In this species, air breathing enables it to survive and inhabit freshwater environments with low oxygen levels. Therefore, it is important to analyse the gills from a morphological aspect and its dimensions in relation to body mass with reference to aquatic respiration. For that, the gills were analysed using a stereoscopic microscope for morphometric studies, and structural and ultrastructural studies were carried out to compare the four branchial arches. Furthermore, two immunohistochemical techniques were used to locate and identify the presence of a Na⁺ /K⁺ pump. The characterization of the potential for cell proliferation of this organ was assessed using an anti-PCNA antibody. The results show that gills of C. paleatus present some characteristics related to its diet and lifestyle, such as the limited development of gill rakers and the abundance of taste buds. In addition, other special features associated with the environment and bimodal breathing were observed: scarce and absent mucous cells (MCs) in the gill filaments and branchial lamellae, respectively, and the localization of mitochondria-rich cells (MRCs) covering the basal third of the branchial lamellae, which reduces the gill respiratory area. A peculiar finding in the gill epithelium of this armoured catfish was the presence of mononuclear cells with sarcomeres similar to myoid cells, whose functional importance should be determined in future studies. Finally, in C. paleatus, the interlamellar space of gill filaments is an important site for cell turnover and ionoregulation; the latter function is also performed by the branchial lamellae.

Aquaculture industry: Supply and demand, best practices, effluent and its current issues and treatment technology

The aquaculture industry has become increasingly important and is rapidly growing in terms of providing a protein food source for human consumption. With the increase in the global population, demand for aquaculture is high and is estimated to reach 62% of the total global production by 2030. In 2018, it was reported that the demand for aquaculture was 46% of the total production, and with the current positive trends, it may be possible to increase tremendously in the coming years. China is still one of the main players in global aquaculture production. Due to high demand, aquaculture production generates large volumes of effluent, posing a great danger to the environment. Aquaculture effluent comprises solid waste and dissolved constituents, including nutrients and contaminants of emerging concern, thereby bringing detrimental impacts such as eutrophication, chemical toxicity, and food insecurity. Waste can be removed through culture systems, constructed wetlands, biofloc, and other treatment technologies. Some methods have the potential to be applied as zero-waste discharge treatment. Thus, this article analyses the supply and demand for aquaculture products, the best practices adopted in the aquaculture industry, effluent characteristics, current issues, and effluent treatment technology.

Nanoencapsulated Clove Oil Applied as an Anesthetic at Slaughtering Decreases Stress, Extends the Freshness, and Lengthens Shelf Life of Cultured Fish

In the aquaculture industry, fish are stunned using a wide range of methods, but all of them trigger stress responses and affect the fish flesh quality. Chilled water is considered one of the most efficient methods, but even this is not a stress-free experience for the fish. Anesthetics included in the ice slurry or in water could decrease this stress and delay the loss of flesh quality. In this work, we analyze the effect of clove oil (CO) nanoencapsulated in β-cyclodextrins (β-CD) (CO + β-CD), incorporated in the stunning bath, on the stress response and the organoleptic attributes of fresh marine and freshwater fish from four economically important fish species: Atlantic salmon, European seabass, Nile tilapia, and Rainbow trout. CO + β-CD reduces the time required to induce anesthesia, independently of water salinity, habitat or water temperature. The plasmatic glucose and cortisol levels decreased in all four species, although the concentrations of CO varied between species. Moreover, plasmatic lactate level differed between the marine and freshwater fish. The use of CO + β-CD extended the shelf life of fish from all the species studied (by 3-7 days). In conclusion, using CO encapsulated in β-CD for anesthetizing fish can be regarded as an improved fish-stunning technique that reduces the anesthesia-induction time, decreases the stress response, and extends the shelf life of fresh fish.

Adsorptive removal of enrofloxacin with magnetic functionalized graphene oxide@ metal-organic frameworks employing D-optimal mixture design

A novel sorbent based on a mixture of magnetic functionalized graphene oxide and MOFs was developed to remove enrofloxacin (EFX) from water samples. The prepared sorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microscope images, and X-ray powder diffraction pattern. The sorbent compositions were optimized by the mixture experimental design. Under the optimal condition, the percentages of each sorbent component, including triethylene tetramine-functionalized graphene oxide (FGO), Fe₃ O₄ , and MOF-5, were 40%, 21%, and 39%, respectively. Besides, the intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-second-order kinetic models can describe the EFX adsorption procedure because of two adsorption mechanisms of EFX on FGO and MOF-5. A positive standard enthalpy of 49.80 kJ/mol indicated the EFX adsorption is endothermic with a chemisorption process. The negative values of ΔG^o obtained in the range of -8.979 to -3.431 kJ/mol at all studied temperatures showed that the adsorption process was also spontaneous. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were analyzed with the partition coefficient to reduce bias in the isotherm model evaluation. The maximum adsorption capacity of 344.83 mg/g and a high partition coefficient of 17.42 g/L in an initial EFX concentration of 10 mg/L were obtained for the EFX removal. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Magnetic functionalized graphene oxide @MOF-5 as a sorbent for the enrofloxacin removal is synthesized. The percentage amount of each component of the sorbent is optimized using the D-optimal mixture design. Adsorption mechanisms of enrofloxacin on magnetic functionalized graphene oxide @MOF-5 are discussed. Thermodynamic parameters for the enrofloxacin adsorption with the sorbents are determined. Isotherm model for the enrofloxacin removal with the sorbent is investigated.

Agar-based edible films for food packaging applications - A review

Agar is a biopolymer extracted from certain red algae. The continuous and transparent film made from agar gum is becoming a common and renewable alternative for plastic-based food packaging materials. However, plain agar film suffers from brittleness, high moisture permeability, and poor thermal stability. Considerable researches have been devoted to improving the properties of agar films to extend their applications. These include reinforcements by nanomaterials, blending with other biopolymers, and incorporating plasticizers, hydrophobic components, or antimicrobial agents into their structure. This article comprehensively reviews the functional properties and defects of edible films made from agar gum. Also, it describes various strategies and components used to make an agar film with desirable properties. Moreover, the applications of agar-based edible films with improved functionality for food packaging are discussed.

Effects of Ascorbic Acid and β-1,3-Glucan on Survival, Physiological Response and Flesh Quality of Cultured Tiger Grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) during Simulated Transport in Water

Transport in water is the most common method for achieving high survival rates when transporting cultured fish in China; yet, transport success relies on proper water quality and conditions. This research was designed to explore the effects of ascorbic acid and β-1,3-glucan on survival, physiological responses, and flesh quality of farmed tiger grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) during simulated transport. The transport water temperature for live tiger grouper was 15 °C, which had the highest survival rate, the lowest stress response, and metabolic rate, and this will reduce the susceptibility to diseases. It is stated that β-1,3-glucan influences the changes of cortisol content, heat shock protein 70, IL-1β, and IgM transcription levels during simulated transport. Rather than using ascorbic acid alone (the A-group), β-1,3-glucan (3.2 mg/L) in the presence of ascorbic acid (25 mg/L) can effectively reduce the increase of transport-induced serum cortisol content, heat shock protein 70, and IL-1β, but stimulated IgM. 25 mg/L ascorbic acid and 3.2 mg/L β-1,3-glucan had no obvious effect on the nutritional indexes and flavor of live tiger grouper; however, these can effectively reduce the stress response, improve the innate immune activity, and ensure a higher survival rate.
