Development of Armillae mellea immobilized nanodiamond for the preconcentrations of Cr(III), Hg(II) and Zn(II)

Dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μSPE) of nickel on activated nanodiamonds@Bi2WO6 nanocomposite from water and food samples

This study presents an original nano-sorbent using activated nanodiamonds@Bi2WO6 to separate and enrich nickel ions from water and food samples. FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM, FE-SEM-EDX, EDS-TEAM, TGA, and BET were used to characterize the nanocomposite. It has a large surface area, active functional groups, and better reactivity. Ni(II) ions were determined as Ni(II)-PADAP chelates using UV-VIS spectroscopy. The parameters were studied and optimized, including pH (6), eluent type and volume (1 mL), ligand quantity (10 μg), sorbent dosage (20 mg), and contact time (1 min). The method has a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.6 μg L-1, a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 5.3 μg L-1, a relative standard deviation of 4.5%, and a preconcentration factor of 10. The method was validated by applying to certified reference materials (BCR estuarine water 505 and 1573a NIST). The method was successfully applied to tap waters, industrial waste waters, and vegetables.

Hybrid biomaterials to preconcentrate and determine toxic metals and metalloids: a review

Toxic elements represent a serious threat to the environment and cause harmful effects on different environmental components, even at trace levels. These toxic elements are often difficult to detect through the typical instrumentation of an analytical laboratory because they are found at very low concentrations in matrices such as food and water. Therefore, preconcentration plays a fundamental role since it allows the effects of the matrix to be minimized, thus reaching lower detection limits and greater sensitivity of detection techniques. In recent years, solid-phase extraction has been successfully used for the preconcentration of metals as an environmentally friendly technique due to the fact that it eliminates or minimizes the use of reagents and solvents and offers reduced analysis times and low generation of waste in the laboratory. Hybrid biomaterials are low-cost, eco-friendly, and useful as efficient solid phases for the preconcentration of elements. In this review, recent investigations based on the use of hybrid biomaterials for the preconcentration and determination of toxic metals are presented and discussed, given special attention to bionanomaterials. A brief description of hybrid biomaterials often used for analytical purposes, as well as analytical techniques mostly used to characterize the hybrid biomaterials, is explained. Finally, the future prospects that encourage the search for new hybrid biomaterials are commented upon.

The removal of heavy metal pollution from wastewaters using thermophilic B. cereus SO-16 bacteria

In this study, bioaccumulation, remediation, tolerance, and effects of manganese ions (Mn(II)) and copper ions (Cu(II)) on antioxidant enzymes of thermophilic Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) SO-16 were investigated in detail. The findings of the study showed that Mn(II) was less toxic than Cu(II) to B. cereus SO-16. Moreover, B. cereus SO-16 was exhibited less tolerance to Mn(II) and Cu(II) ions in the liquid medium compared to the solid medium. The growth of bacteria was expressively effective for Mn(II) and Cu(II) concentrations of 2.5 mg/L at 24th h. The highest Mn(II) and Cu(II) bioaccumulation values after 48 h incubation of thermophilic B. cereus SO-16 were measured as 102.04 (24th h) and 87.96 (36th h) metal/dry bacteria weight. The change in morphology and functionality of B. cereus SO-16 after interaction with Mn(II) and Cu(II) was tested using various methods. The results indicated that B. cereus SO-16, a thermophilic bacterium, can be utilized in industrial wastewaters to recover and remediation of toxic metals.

Study of an adsorption method for trace mercury based on Bacillus subtilis

In order to decrease the difficulty in trace mercury determination, an adsorption method for trace mercury based on Bacillus subtilis cells was proposed in this article. The adsorption process was characterized by optical microscopy and SEM. The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by IR. The adsorption performance was studied by measuring the concentration of supernate and calculating the adsorption efficiency. When adsorbing Hg2+, Bacillus subtilis cells gathered and their structure turned coarse. The IR results illustrated that functional groups bound with Hg for complexation during adsorption. Bacillus subtilis completed adsorption for trace Hg2+ in 15 min. The adsorption efficiency was maintained above 80% under low Hg2+ concentrations (<200 µg/L). The proposed study illustrates that Bacillus subtilis cells are highly efficient and easily obtained material for the adsorption of trace mercury, which shows potential to be further used in the pretreatment of trace Hg2+ detection.
