Abstract
In this work, micro-solid phase extraction using surfactant modified biosorbent was investigated for trace level determination of triazole fungicides prior to their analysis by high performance liquid chromatography. Coconut husk fiber (CHF) was selected as an effective biosorbent in the extraction process. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy methods were used to characterize the modified biosorbent. Various factors affecting the extraction efficiency of the proposed method were studied including the amount of coconut husk fiber biosorbent (0.1 g), kind and concentration of surfactant as a modifier (sodium dodecyl sulfate, 10 mmol L-1), kind and volume of desorption solvent (methanol, 150 μL), and extraction period (including vortex adsorption time, centrifugation adsorption time, vortex desorption time and centrifugation adsorption time approximately 10 min). Under the selected conditions, the calibration plot was found to be linear in the range of 9-300 μg L-1 with a coefficient for determination of greater than 0.99. The limits of detection and limits of quantification for the studied triazole fungicides were 3.00 and 9.00 μg L-1, respectively. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to determine triazole fungicides in environmental water, soybean milk, fruit juice and alcoholic beverage samples with acceptable recoveries obtained in the range of 67.0% to 105.0%.

Abstract
Surfactant bilayers or admicelles at the solid surface-liquid interface inside 50-200 μm inner diameter (i.d.) open-tube fused-silica capillaries were developed as 'soft' stationary pseudophases for the liquid chromatographic (LC) separations of neutral and charged analytes. Admicelles were formed in-situ from buffered aqueous mobile phases with cetytrimethylammonium bromide at concentrations between the critical surface aggregation concentration and critical micelle concentration, which were determined by electroosmotic flow measurements using capillary electrophoresis. There were no micelles in the mobile phase solution. Also, there was no solid phase that is classically required in LC. Pressure and voltage driven modes or open-tubular admicellar liquid chromatography (OT-AMLC) and electrochromatography, respectively were proposed based on the separation of neutral analytes. The parameters (i.e., pH, concentration of surfactant, salt, and methanol in the mobile phase and capillary i.d.) that affected the surprising chromatographic effect of admicelles at the interface were investigated. The analytical performance of OT-AMLC for small molecules were found acceptable. Applications to environmental water and biological (HepG cell line metabolism media) samples analysis with appropriate sample preparation procedures were also conducted. The use of pseudophases at the solid surface-liquid interface could be a viable solution to problems associated with the use of solid stationary or support materials in nano- and micro-liquid chromatography and electrochromatography.

Abstract
Simple, accurate and high-throughput pretreatment method would facilitate large-scale studies of trace analysis in complex samples. Magnetic mixed hemimicelles solid-phase extraction has the power to become a key pretreatment method in biological, environmental and clinical research. However, lacking of experimental predictability and unsharpness of extraction mechanism limit the development of this promising method. Herein, this work tries to establish theoretical-based experimental designs for extraction of trace analytes from complex samples using magnetic mixed hemimicelles solid-phase extraction. We selected three categories and six sub-types of compounds for systematic comparative study of extraction mechanism, and comprehensively illustrated the roles of different force (hydrophobic interaction, π-π stacking interactions, hydrogen-bonding interaction, electrostatic interaction) for the first time. What’s more, the application guidelines for supporting materials, surfactants and sample matrix were also summarized. The extraction mechanism and platform established in the study render its future promising for foreseeable and efficient pretreatment under theoretical based experimental design for trace analytes from environmental, biological and clinical samples.

Abstract
The present study deals with the simultaneous removal of Brilliant Green (BG) and Crystal Violet (CV) by surfactant-modified alumina. The utilization of alumina nanoparticles with an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)) as a novel and efficient adsorbent is successfully carried out to remove two cationic dyes from aqueous solutions in binary batch systems. A first-order derivative spectrophotometric method is developed for the simultaneous determination of BG and CV in binary solutions. The linear concentration range and limits of detection for the simultaneous determination of BG and CV were found to be: 1-20, 1-15 mg/L, 0.3 and 0.5 mg/L, respectively. The influence of various parameters, such as contact time, initial concentration of dyes and sorbent mass on the dye adsorption is investigated. A response surface methodology achieved through performing the Box-Behnken design is utilized to optimize the removal of dyes by surfactant-modified nanoparticle alumina through a batch adsorption process. The proposed quadratic model resulting from the Box-Behnken design approach fitted very well with the experimental data. The optimal conditions for dye removal were contact time t=50 min, sorbent dose=0.036 g, CBG (Initial BG concentration)=215 mg/L and CCV (Initial CV concentration)=170 mg/L. Furthermore, FT-IR analysis, the isotherms and kinetics of adsorption were also explored.

Abstract
A new solid-phase extraction (SPE) format was demonstrated, based on eggshell membrane (ESM) templating of the mixed hemimicelle/admicelle of linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) as an adsorbent for the enrichment of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environmental aqueous samples. The LAS mixed hemimicelle/admicelle formation and SPE of the target PAHs were conducted simultaneously by adding the organic target and LAS through a column filled with 500 mg of ESM. The effect of various factors, including LAS concentration, solution pH, ionic strength, and humic acid concentration on the recoveries of PAHs were investigated and optimized. The results showed that LAS concentration and solution pH had obvious effect on extraction of PAHs, and the recoveries of PAHs compounds decreased in the presence of salt and humic acid. Under the optimized analytical conditions, the present method could respond down to 0.1-8.6 ng/L PAHs with a linear calibration ranging from 0.02 to 10 μg/L, showing a good PAHs enrichment ability with high sensitivity. The developed method was used satisfactorily for the detection of PAHs in environmental water samples. The mixed hemimicelle/admicelle adsorbent exhibited high extraction efficiency to PAHs and good selectivity with respect to natural organic matter and was advantageous over commercial C₁₈ adsorbent, for example, high extraction yield, high breakthrough volume, and easy regeneration.

Abstract
The adsorption of surfactants and adsolubilization of organic compounds on knit cotton fabric are fundamentally important in admicellar polymerization to impart characteristics like water repellency, stain resistance, and flame retardancy. The main objective of this research is to study adsorption and adsolubilization of fluororsurfactants and fluoromonomers used to obtain water repellency characteristics. Adsorption of nonionic (fluoroaliphatic amine oxide) and cationic (fluoroaliphatic quaternary ammonium surfactant) fluororsurfactants at the interface of cotton is investigated with and without fluoroacrylate monomers. A two-site adsolubilization model was used to predict the aggregation number of fluorosurfactant.

Abstract
This paper described a simple and novel analytical technique for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environmental water samples. A micro-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) was developed utilizing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide modified ordered TiO(2) nanotube array. The experimental results indicated that modified TiO(2) nanotube arrays demonstrated an excellent merit on the preconcentration of PAHs, and there were excellent linear relationships between peak area and the concentration of PAHs in the range of 0.2-100 μg L(-1) and 1.0-100 μg L(-1), respectively. The detection limits of proposed method for the targeted PAHs were in the range of 0.026-0.82 μg L(-1) (S/N = 3). The real-world environmental water samples were used to validate the applicability of the proposed method and good spiked recoveries were in the range of 75.0-114%. All these results demonstrated that this new μ-SPE technique was a viable alternative to conventional enrichment techniques for the extraction and analysis of PAHs in complex samples.

Abstract
The magnetic mixed hemimicelles solid-phase extraction (MMHSPE), based on the adsorption of cation surfactant octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (OTMABr) onto magnetite nanoparticles (Fe(3)O(4) NPs) to form mixed hemimicelles, was proposed for the preconcentration of several sulfonamides (SAs) compounds including sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfamethoxydiazine (SMD), sulfadimethoxine (SDM) and sulfaquinoxaline (SQX) from environmental water samples. This method avoided the time-consuming column-passing process of loading large volume samples in traditional SPE through the rapid isolation of OTMABr-coated Fe(3)O(4) NPs with an adscititious magnet. Mixed hemimicelles formed on the surface of Fe(3)O(4) NPs by OTMABr showed great adsorptive tendency towards analytes. The OTMABr-coated Fe(3)O(4) NPs adsorbents were easy to be prepared, low cost and environmentally friendly. A comprehensive study on the adsorption conditions such as the amount of the surfactant, the solution pH, the desorption condition and the maximum extraction sample volume were optimized. A concentration factor of 1000 was achieved by the extraction of 500 mL of environmental water samples using MMHSPE. Detection limits obtained for SMX, SMD, SDM and SQX were 0.026, 0.024, 0.033 and 0.030 microg L(-1), respectively. Good recoveries (70-102%) with low relative standard deviations (1-6%) were achieved in analyzing spiked water samples. Low concentration of SQX was found in hospital primary and final sewage effluent sample.

Abstract
Chlorophenols including monochlorophenol, dichlorophenol, trichlorophenol, tetrachlorophenol, and pentachlorophenol in water were extracted into dialkylated cationic surfactant-silica gel admicelles. The dialkylated cationic surfactants such as didecyldimethylammonium bromide (DC10) and didodedyldimethylammonium bromide (DC12) sorbed on silica gel surfaces to form admicelles at pH 9. Approximately 200mg of DC10 was quantitatively sorbed on 1g of silica gel. The sorption further increased by further addition of DC10. This is in contrast to the fact that the maximum sorption of mono-alkylated cetyltrimethyammonium chloride (CTAC) was only ca. 100mg. Based on the fluorescent spectra of a molecular probe, N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine, DC10- and DC12-silica gel admicelles were more hydrophobic than CTAC-silica gel admicelles. The extents of the extraction of chlorophenols into DC10-silica gel admicelles were greater than those into CTAC-silica gel admicelles. However, the extractions to DC12-silica gel admicelles were insufficient due to leakage of DC12 vesicles. Consequently, DC10-silica gel admicelles were the most adequate for concentrating chlorophenols in water. An admicelle column was prepared by passing aqueous buffer solution of DC10 through a Bond Elut Jr. silica gel solid-phase extraction cartridge. It was successfully applied to the 500-fold concentration of chlorophenols including hydrophilic mono-substituted chlorophenol in water samples prior to their HPLC analysis.

Abstract
A new material for matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD) was synthesized -- p-nitro-N-propylaniline/silica (pNNPASi) by grafting reactions, characterized by elemental analysis and N(2)-adsorption-desorption isotherms, and tested for multiclass multiresidue analysis of pesticides in wet and freeze-dried carrots. Results obtained applying this new solid phase sorbent to MSPD extraction of ten pesticides (trichlorphon, trifluralin, dicloran, chlorothalonil, prometryn, linuron, captan, procymidone, prochloraz, and deltametrin) in wet carrots showed better results than the ones obtained for freeze-dried samples. Recoveries were in the range of 48-106% and precisions varied from 6 to 20% when wet samples were employed. Comparison between pNNPASi sorbent and C(18) showed better performance of pNNPASi for eight out of ten pesticides tested. The LOQs show that the developed method can be used to detect the pesticides investigated in carrots at concentrations below the maximum residue levels (MRL) established by EU, USEPA, and National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). Linuron, captan, prochloraz, and deltamethrin were found in at least one of the two commercial samples studied in concentrations above the LOQ of this method. Concentrations of the last three pesticides were above the European MRL in one of the commercial samples.

Abstract
A comparative study on the use of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-coated silica and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)-coated alumina mixed hemimicelles-based solid-phase extraction (SPE) for the pre-concentration of six perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in environmental water samples was presented. The six analytes heptafluorobutyric acid (HFBA), perfluoroheptanic acid (PFHeA), perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanic sulfonic (PFOS), perfluorononanic acid (PFNA) and perfluorodecanic acid (PFDeA) were quantitatively retained on both sorbent materials. The cationic surfactant (CTAB adsorbed onto silica) was more appropriate for SPE of PFCs. The main factors affecting adsolubilization of PFCs including the amount of surfactant, pH of solution, sample loading volume and desorption were investigated and optimized. Concentration factor of 500 were achieved by SPE of 500 mL of several environmental water samples. The method detection limits obtained for HFBA, PFHeA, PFOA, PFOS, PFNA and PFDeA were 0.10, 0.28, 0.07, 0.20, 0.10 and 0.05 ng/L, respectively. The relative standard deviation of recoveries ranged from 2 to 8%, which indicated good method precision.
