Abstract
Modern society depends on many finite natural resources, from which metals are of great importance. Copper and nickel's relevance is due to their vast applications, resulting in high market value and demand. As such, their polluting emissions are also significant and their removal from wastewaters is imperative. Moreover, effluent treatment techniques can be used to recover the metallic cations, via selective processes. In this review, copper and nickel selective ligands in the literature are surveyed. These are most commonly Schiff bases, along with crown ethers and porphyrins. They are usually employed in ion sensing (colorimetric chemosensors or electrodes) with great success - the disruption in response of colorimetric sensors is up to 7% and binding constants are usually at least one order of magnitude greater with the desired cation than with interferents. However, modified adsorbents are also reported. The possibilities of using ionophores in wastewater cleaning, allowing the treatment of effluents and the selective recovery of valuable materials, and their implications on new green policies is discussed.

Abstract
A novel potentiometric Cu2+-selective microsensor has been developed that is based upon ion imprinted 2-vinylpyridine polymer. The polymer was synthesized using Cu(II) ions, 2-vinylpyridine, methacrylic acid, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a template, functional monomer, and cross-linker, respectively. The resultant polymer was used as ionophore to obtain a selective potentiometric response towards Cu(II) ions in the structure of the PVC membrane. The detection limit of the microsensor was determined to be 8.4 × 10−7 mol/L, and its response time was considerably short (less than 15 s). The prepared microsensor exhibited a near-Nernstian response for Cu(II) ions over the concentration range of 10−1 to 10−6 mol/L, with a slope of 28.5 mV per decade over 2 months, and without any considerable divergence in potentials. The microsensor was effectively performed in a pH range between 4.0 and 7.0 and used as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of Cu(II) ions with EDTA. The proposed microsensor has been successfully demonstrated for the determination of copper in a number of environmental water samples. The obtained potentiometric results were in good harmony with the results obtained by the AAS method.

Abstract
A Cu(II)-selective electrode has been fabricated by utilizing a mechanochemically synthesized copper-specific ionophore "L" embedded in a poly(vinyl chloride) membrane. 2-Nitrophenyloctylether and sodium tetraphenylborate have been used as a plasticizer and as a solvent mediator, respectively, and found to be enhancing the sensitivity of the fabricated ion-selective electrode (ISE). A range of membranes (S1-S7) with varying compositions were casted and investigated in ISE. Results revealed an excellent Nernstian response of 29.38 ± 0.55 mV/dec for the ISE S6. The fabricated ISE operates well in the pH window 4.0-7.5, and the limit of detection was found to be 5 μM (0.3 ppm). Quick response time (15 s), long shelf-life, and selectivity (on the order of 10-4 and 10-5) over a number of interfering cations enabled S6 promising for real off laboratory sample analysis and can be employed to detect copper ion in various industrial as well as biological and environmental samples. To demonstrate the practical application of these ISE, the Cu concentration in the digested printed circuit board has been estimated using the standard calibration plot. The fabricated ISE has been regenerated through extracting copper by chelating with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.

Abstract
A miniaturized solid-contact polyvinyl chloride membrane electrode based on the bis[(2-(hydroxyethylimino)phenolato]copper(II) complex has been prepared for the determination of Cu(II) ion in real samples. The influence of coating membrane composition, pH, and possible interfering cations on the response of the ion-selective electrode was investigated. A number of membranes at different compositions were prepared and their Cu2+ sensing capabilities were investigated. The best results for Cu2+ sensing was obtained for the electrode membrane containing ionophore − 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether – polyvinyl chloride and potassium tetrakis(p-chlorophenyl)borate in a ratio of 4:65:30:1 (w/w, mg), respectively. The prepared electrode exhibited a near-Nernstian response (28.3 mV/decade) to Cu2+ in the concentration range from 1.0 × 10−6 to 1.0 × 10−1 mol/L with a limit of detection of 8.3 × 10−7 mol/L. The potentiometric response of the electrode was independent from the pH of the test solution in the pH range of 3.0–6.0. The electrode has a very short response time, about 15 s, and it can be used over a period of 3 months without any divergence in potential. The electrode has been successfully applied as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of Cu(II) ions with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and in the determination of Cu(II) in wastewater of the copper processing industry.

Abstract
A novel colorimetric cation sensor bearing phenol, thiol and HCN groups was designed and synthesized. In a DMSO/H2O (9:1, v/v) solution, the sensor exhibited highly selective recognition of Cu2+ among a range of metal ions tested. In the presence of Cu2+, solutions of the sensor underwent a dramatic color change from colorless to yellow, while the presence of other metal cations such as Zn2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Ag+ and Ca2+ had no effect on the color. The detection limit of the sensor toward Cu2+ is 8.0×10(-7) M and an association constant Ka of 4.3×10(5) M(-1) was measured. The sensing of Cu2+ by this sensor was found to be reversible, with the Cu2+-induced color being lost upon addition of EDTA.

Abstract
A new functionalized nanoporous silica gel with dipyridyl group (DPNSG) was synthesized. Then, the potentiometric response of the copper(II) ion was investigated at a carbon paste electrode chemically modified with this newly designed functionalized nanoporous silica gel. The electrodes with DPNSG proportions of 15.0% (w/w) demonstrated very stable potentials. Calibration plots with Nernstian slopes for Cu2+ were observed, 28.4 (+/-1.0) mV decade(-1), over a wide linear concentration range (1.0x10(-7) to 1.0x10(-2) M). The electrode exhibited a detection limit of 8.0x10(-8) M. Moreover, the selectivity coefficients measured by the match potential method in acetate buffer, pH 5.5, were investigated. The electrode presented a response time of approximately 50s, high performance, high sensitivity in a wide range of cation activities and good long-term stability (more than 9 months). The method was satisfactory and was used to determine the copper ion concentration in waste waters, contaminated by this metal.
