Precipitate coating on cellulose fibre as sorption medium for selenium preconcentration and speciation with hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry

One-pot preparation of magnetic composite containing boronic acid groups and aminated multwalled carbon nanotubes for the speciation of Se(IV) and Se(VI) in water and milk samples by combination with chromatographic quantification

Speciation of Se(IV) and Se(VI) is essential due to their significant differences in reactivity, toxicity and bioavailability. Efficient extraction is the pivotal step in the quantification of inorganic selenium species. In this work, a new magnetic nano-composite (MNC) containing boronic acid group and aminated multwalled carbon nanotubes was facilely fabricated by means of one-pot hydrothermal strategy. The prepared MNC contained abundant functional groups and satisfactory magnetic saturation value. Combining with magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) format, the MNC displayed satisfactory capture performance towards the complex formed by the coordination of Se(IV) and o-phenylenediamine (OPA). Adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics were studied in detail to investigate the adsorption procedure of Se(IV)/OPA complex on MNC. Under the optimal preparation conditions of MNC and extraction parameters, the MNC/MSPE was connected with HPLC equipped with a diode array detector (DAD) to quantify trace Se(IV) and Se(VI) species in water and milk samples. Se(VI) was reduced to Se(IV) and then the total inorganic Se was quantified by the developed method. Subtraction method was used to measure the concentration of Se(VI). The achieved limits of detection were in the ranges of 0.0082-0.013 μg/L and 0.041-0.13 μg/kg for water and milk samples, respectively. Recoveries in actual samples spiked with different amounts of analytes varied from 81.0 % and 117 %, and the RSDs for repeatability varied from 1.0 % to 10 %. In comparison with existing studies based on MSPE, the established method presents some merits such as greenness in the preparation of magnetic adsorbent, rapid extraction procedure, low cost and satisfactory sensitivity in the speciation of inorganic Se species.

Fabrication of functional group-rich monoliths for magnetic field-assisted in-tube solid phase microextraction of inorganic selenium species in water samples followed by online chromatographic determination

Efficient separation and enrichment is a crucial step in the analysis of Se(IV) and Se(VI). In the present study, for the first time, online monolith-based magnetic field-assisted in-tube solid phase microextraction (MFA/IT-SPME) was applied to capture inorganic selenium species in water samples. To this aim, porous monoliths mixed with magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized in a silica capillary and employed as a microextraction column (MEC) for MFA/IT-SPME. After that, a magnetic coil utilized to induce variable magnetic fields in adsorption and desorption steps was entwined around the MEC. Se(IV) was coordinated with o-phenylenediamine to form a coordination compound that was infused onto the MEC to be captured. Results evidenced that application of magnetic field during the extraction procedure assisted the capture of the Se(IV)-OPA complex, with an enhancement in the extraction efficiency from 83% to 97%. Under the optimized conditions, MFA/IT-SPME was online combined with HPLC equipped with a diode array detector (DAD) to perform quantification of Se(IV) and Se(VI) in environmental water samples. Total inorganic Se was quantified after pre-reduction of Se(VI) to Se(IV) prior to applying the established approach, and a subtraction method was adopted to calculate the Se(VI) and Se(IV) contents. The limit of detection for Se(IV) was as low as 0.012 μg L^-1. The reliability of the suggested method was investigated by assaying Se(IV) and Se(VI) species in real-life water samples with satisfactory recoveries (81.1%-116%) and repeatability (RSDs below 9%).

Investigation on selenium and mercury interactions and the distribution patterns in mice organs with LA-ICP-MS imaging

It is the first time to investigate local distribution patterns of mercury (Hg) in mice organs after Hg and Se exposure with detection of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Two batch of adult mice were employed to be exposed to inorganic mercury (iHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) with or without Se at the dose of 55 μmol kg^-1. Tissue sections of brain, kidney, liver, and spleen from one batch mice were prepared to get local imaging of Hg by LA-ICP-MS. Tissues from another batch mice were used to quantify Hg and Se in tissues with ICP-MS after acid digestion. The results indicated that, for mice exposed to iHg, Hg mainly distributed in kidney, a little in liver, and hardly in brain and spleen; for mice exposed to MeHg, lower amount of Hg was found in kidney, liver and spleen, and almost no Hg was found in brain. It was interesting that for Hg and Se co-administration groups, higher level of Hg was observed in kidney, liver, spleen and even in brain than single Hg administration groups. In addition, Se level in organ tissues increased obviously not only in Se exposure group but also in MeHg exposure group, while the phenomenon was not observed in iHg exposure group. HepG2 cells were employed to investigate Se and Hg interactions in single cell level, similar bioaccumulation behavior of Hg was found between cells and mice organs. Higher level of Hg was observed in cells cultured with Se and Hg medium than cells cultured with single Hg medium. The results are expected to provide new insight to investigate Hg and Se interactions in animal bodies and in-vitro cells.

Cellulose mini-membranes modified with TiO2 for separation, determination, and speciation of arsenates and selenites

Sorptive and selective mini-membranes based on TiO₂ directly synthesized onto cellulose filters (TiO₂@cellulose) have been developed. The in situ synthesis of TiO₂@cellulose applied is simple and economically advantageous. The obtained membranes can be useful for (1) separating arsenic(V) and selenium(IV) from other ions and organic matter, (2) speciation of arsenic and selenium, and (3) determining ulratraces of these ions in water samples. The membranes exhibit good stability and high maximum adsorption capacities for Se(IV) (71 mg g⁻¹) and As(V) (41 mg g⁻¹). A monolayer chemical adsorption of analytes on the membranes was confirmed. The structure of membranes was examined with scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffractometry, and micro energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (μ-EDXRF). The membranes were characterized by homogenous distribution of TiO₂ onto cellulose. The TiO₂@cellulose was used as a new sorbent in micro-solid phase extraction for determination of Se(IV) and As(V) by EDXRF. Using direct analysis of mini-membranes after sorption of analytes avoids the elution step. Thus, the proposed procedure is an attractive and solvent-free option for quantitative monitoring of Se(IV) and As(V) in different materials. Both analytes were quantitatively and simultaneously separated/determined from samples at pH 2 with very good recovery (close to 100%), precision (4.5%), and detection limits (0.4 ng mL⁻¹ Se and 0.25 ng mL⁻¹ As). TiO₂@cellulose membranes were applied to water analysis.

Recent Advances in Nanomaterials for Analysis of Trace Heavy Metals

In an effort to achieve high sensitivity analysis methods for ultra-trace levels of heavy metals, numerous new nanomaterials are explored for the application in preconcentration processes and sensing systems. Nanomaterial-based methods have proven to be effective for selective analysis and speciation of heavy metals in combination with spectrometric techniques. This review outlined the different types of nanomaterials applied in the field of heavy metal analysis, and concentrated on the latest developments in various new materials. In particular, the functionalization of traditional materials and the exploitation of bio-functional materials could increase the specificity to target metals. The hybridization of multiple materials could improve material properties, to build novel sensor system or achieve detection-removal integration. Finally, we discussed the future perspectives of nanomaterials in the heavy metal preconcentration and sensor design, as well as their respective advantages and challenges. Despite impressive progress and widespread attention, the development of new nanomaterials and nanotechnology is still hampered by numerous challenges, particularly in the specificity to the target and the anti-interference performance in complex matrices.

An electrochemical sequential injection method to investigate the adsorption of selenite on Fe(III) polyhydroxy cations intercalated vermiculite

A sequential injection - square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SI-SWASV) method for determination of Se(IV) at a gold working electrode was developed to investigate the adsorption of Se(IV) onto vermiculite intercalated with Fe(III) polyhydroxy cations. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.060 and 0.20 μmol L^-1, respectively (4.7 and 15.7 μg L^-1). The linearity was up to 1.0 μmol L^-1, and the sampling throughput was 18 analyses h^-1. The proposed approach is a low-cost alternative to more expensive spectrometric methods. Adsorption onto vermiculite intercalated with Fe(III) polyhydroxy cations removed 93% of Se(IV) from a 1.0 μmol L^-1 solution (250 mL) after 5 min of contact time with 625 mg of adsorbent. Adsorption isotherms (25.0 ± 0.5 °C) were fitted by the Freundlich equation resulting in 1/n = 0.51 ± 0.03 and K_f = (1.584 ± 0.002) × 10³ μmol^1-1/n g^-1 L^1/n (r² = 0.995). Fitting by the Langmuir equation resulted in an adsorption constant of 0.026 ± 0.008 L g^-1 and adsorption capacity of 47 ± 5 μmol g^-1 (3.7 ± 0.4 mg g^-1) (r² = 0.97). This capacity was higher than that found for several other iron oxides, but lower than that obtained for oxide/hydroxide-based Fe(III) nanoparticles.

Nanomembrane Canister Architectures for the Visualization and Filtration of Oxyanion Toxins with One-Step Processing

Nanomembrane canister-like architectures were fabricated by using hexagonal mesocylinder-shaped aluminosilica nanotubes (MNTs)-porous anodic alumina (PAA) hybrid nanochannels. The engineering pattern of the MNTs inside a 60 μm-long membrane channel enabled the creation of unique canister-like channel necks and cavities. The open-tubular canister architecture design provides controllable, reproducible, and one-step processing patterns of visual detection and rejection/permeation of oxyanion toxins such as selenite (SeO3(2-)) in aquatic environments (i.e., in ground and river water sources) in the Ibaraki Prefecture of Japan. The decoration of organic ligand moieties such as omega chrome black blue (OCG) into inorganic Al2O3@tubular SiO2/Al2O3 canister membrane channel cavities led to the fabrication of an optical nanomembrane sensor (ONS). The OCG ligand was not leached from the canister as observed in washing, sensing, and recovery assays of selenite anions in solution, which enabled its multiple reuse. The ONS makes a variety of alternate processing analyses of selective quantification, visual detection, rejection/permeation, and recovery of toxic selenite quick and simple without using complex instrumentation. Under optimal conditions, the ONS canister exhibited a high selectivity toward selenite anions relative to other ions and a low-level detection limit of 0.0093 μM. Real analytical data showed that approximately 96% of SeO3(2-) anions can be recovered from aquatic and wastewater samples. The ONS canister holds potential for field recovery applications of toxic selenite anions from water.

Solid phase extraction for the speciation and preconcentration of inorganic selenium in water samples: a review

Selenium is an essential element for the normal cellular function of living organisms. However, selenium is toxic at concentrations of only three to five times higher than the essential concentration. The inorganic forms (mainly selenite and selenate) present in environmental water generally exhibit higher toxicity (up to 40 times) than organic forms. Therefore, the determination of low levels of different inorganic selenium species in water is an analytical challenge. Solid-phase extraction has been used as a separation and/or preconcentration technique prior to the determination of selenium species due to the need for accurate measurements for Se species in water at extremely low levels. The present paper provides a critical review of the published methods for inorganic selenium speciation in water samples using solid phase extraction as a preconcentration procedure. On the basis of more than 75 references, the different speciation strategies used for this task have been highlighted and classified. The solid-phase extraction sorbents and the performance and analytical characteristics of the developed methods for Se speciation are also discussed.

Preparation and evaluation of Fe-loaded activated carbon for enrichment of selenium for analytical and environmental purposes

The adsorbent, based on the thermal modification of activated carbon impregnated by iron(III) nitrate(V), has been prepared and applied for selenium enrichment from aqueous solution. Various ratios of the impregnating agent to carbon mass were carefully examined with respect to selenium adsorption capacity and selectivity. The basic Se(VI) ions adsorption parameters affecting the adsorption ability onto the prepared activated carbons were studied. The carbon impregnated by 10% Fe(NO(3))(2) and thermally treated at 200 °C possessed the highest adsorption capacity and selectivity towards selenium ions. The physico-chemical characterization of the prepared adsorbents before and after selenium uptake were carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray detector (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The studies confirmed the surface complexation reactions of iron species and selenium on the Fe-loaded activated carbon. Due to its high adsorption capacity enrichment of selenium on the studied adsorbent has been successfully applied for its determination in the complementary feeds, using the carbon slurry sampling graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry technique (GFAAS) and standard calibration method.

Online preconcentration-IC-ICP-MS for selenium quantification and speciation at ultratraces

Selenium (Se) is of key importance to human health with a very narrow concentration range of optimal dietary intake. Due to the inherent analytical challenge linked with the low natural abundance, information on precise and accurate Se speciation in deficient environments is hardly existent. This study presents a novel approach to determine Se species-specifically at ultratraces, by online coupling of a preconcentration (trap) column to an ion chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (IC-ICP-MS) system. It is demonstrated that with this robust and work/time efficient method, the predominant selenium oxyanions, selenite (Se(IV)) and selenate (Se(VI)), can be quantified down to 7.3 and 8.3 picogram total Se, respectively, in an overall analytical time of 420 s, only. The applicability for environmental samples was proven on pristine volcanic ashes collected from seven different volcanoes. The high sensitivity of the novel approach allowed to determine speciation in samples that were strongly depleted in total selenium (<0.05 mg kg(-1) Se) with only minor fractions of Se mobilized (i.e., less than 10% of the total selenium was leached in 10 out of 12 samples). The studied samples showed considerate differences in selenium speciation, with selenite and selenate co-occurring in most samples. The fact that the studied sample leachates had a wide range of pH (3.78-9.55) and major anion/cation composition underlines the versatility and wide potential application range of the method presented.

Total arsenic and selenium analysis in Marcellus shale, high-salinity water, and hydrofracture flowback wastewater

Trace levels of arsenic and selenium can be toxic to living organisms yet their quantitation in high ionic strength or high salinity aqueous media is difficult due to the matrix interferences which can either suppress or enhance the analyte signal. A modified thiol cotton fiber (TCF) method employing lower flow rates and centrifugation has been used to remove the analyte from complex aqueous media and minimize the matrix interferences. This method has been tested using a USGS (SGR-1b) certified reference shale. It has been used to analyze Marcellus shale samples following microwave digestion as well as spiked samples of high salinity water (HSW) and flow back wastewater (WRF6) obtained from an actual gas well drilling operation. Quantitation of arsenic and selenium is carried out by graphite furnace atomic spectroscopy (GFAAS). Extraction of arsenic and selenium from Marcellus shale exposed to HSW and WRF6 for varying lengths of time is also reported.

A magnesium hydroxide preconcentration/matrix reduction method for the analysis of rare earth elements in water samples using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

This paper describes a simple method for simultaneous preconcentration and matrix reduction during the analysis of rare earth elements (REEs) in water samples through laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). From a systematic investigation of the co-precipitation of REEs using magnesium hydroxide, we optimized the effects of several parameters - the pH, the amount of magnesium, the shaking time, the efficiency of Ba removal, and the sample matrix - to ensure quantitative recoveries. We employed repetitive laser ablation to remove the dried-droplet samples from the filter medium and introduce them into the ICP-MS system for determinations of REEs. The enrichment factors ranged from 8 to 88. The detection limit, at an enrichment factor of 32, ranged from 0.03 to 0.20 pg mL(-1). The relative standard deviations for the determination of REEs at a concentration of 1 ng mL(-1) when processing 40 mL sample solution were 2.0-4.8%. We applied this method to the satisfactory determination of REEs in lake water and synthetic seawater samples.
