Abstract
Sulfur-containing antioxidants are an important part of the antioxidant defense systems in living organisms under the frame of a thiol-disulfide equilibrium. Among them, l-cysteine, l-homocysteine, l-methionine, glutathione, and α-lipoic acid are the most typical representatives. Their actions in living systems are briefly discussed. Being electroactive, sulfur-containing antioxidants are interesting analytes to be determined using various types of electrochemical sensors. Attention is paid to the chemically modified electrodes with various nanostructured coverages. The analytical capabilities of electrochemical sensors for sulfur-containing antioxidant quantification are summarized and discussed. The data are summarized and presented on the basis of the electrode surface modifier applied, i.e., carbon nanomaterials, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) and nanostructures, organic mediators, polymeric coverage, and mixed modifiers. The combination of various types of nanomaterials provides a wider linear dynamic range, lower limits of detection, and higher selectivity in comparison to bare electrodes and sensors based on the one type of surface modifier. The perspective of the combination of chromatography with electrochemical detection providing the possibility for simultaneous determination of sulfur-containing antioxidants in a complex matrix has also been discussed.

Abstract
This review article comprehensively discusses the various electrochemical approaches for measuring and detecting oxidative stress biomarkers and enzymes, particularly reactive oxygen/nitrogen species, highly reactive chemical molecules, which are the byproducts of normal aerobic metabolism and can oxidize cellular components such as DNA, lipids, and proteins. First, we address the latest research on the electrochemical determination of reactive oxygen species generating enzymes, followed by detection of oxidative stress biomarkers, and final determination of total antioxidant activity (endogenous and exogenous). Most electrochemical sensing platforms exploited the unique properties of micro- and nanomaterials such as carbon nanomaterials, metal or metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs), conductive polymers and metal-nano compounds, which have been mainly used for enhancing the electrocatalytic response of sensors/biosensors. The performance of the electroanalytical devices commonly measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) in terms of detection limit, sensitivity, and linear range of detection is also discussed. This article provides a comprehensive review of electrode fabrication, characterization and evaluation of their performances, which are assisting to design and manufacture an appropriate electrochemical (bio)sensor for medical and clinical applications. The key points such as accessibility, affordability, rapidity, low cost, and high sensitivity of the electrochemical sensing devices are also highlighted for the diagnosis of oxidative stress. Overall, this review brings a timely discussion on past and current approaches for developing electrochemical sensors and biosensors mainly based on micro and nanomaterials for the diagnosis of oxidative stress.

Abstract
A simple and precise analytical approach developed for single and simultaneous determination of resorcinol (RC) and hydroquinone (HQ) in pharmaceutical samples using carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate as ionic liquid and ZnFe2O4 nanoparticle. A significant enhancement in the peak current and sensitivity of the proposed sensor observed by using modifiers in the composition of working electrode compared to bare CPE which is in accordance with the results obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy investigations. Electrochemical investigations revealed a well-defined irreversible oxidation peak for RC over a wide concentration range from 3.0 µM to 500 µM in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.0) with the linear regression equations of Ip (µA) = 0.0276 CRC (µM) + 0.5508 (R2 = 0.997). The limit of detection and quantification for RC analysis were found to be 1.46 µM and 4.88 µM, respectively. However, the obtained SW voltammograms for simultaneous determination of RC and HQ exhibited a desirable peak separation of about 360 mV potential difference and a satisfactory linear response over the range of 50-700 µM and 5-350 µM with the favorable correlation coefficient of 0.991 and 0.995, respectively. The diffusion coefficient (D) of RC and the electron transfer coefficient (α) at the surface of ZnFe2O4/NPs/IL/CPE estimated to be 2.83 × 10- 4 cm s- 1 and 0.76. The proposed sensor as a promising and low-cost method successfully applied for determination of RC in commercial pharmaceutical formulations such as the resorcinol cream of 2% O/W emulsion available on the market with the recovery of 98.47 ± 0.04.

Abstract
The new objective of sustainable analytical chemistry is to develop validated robust, swift, simple and highly sensitive analytical methods that are based on cost effective sensing technology. Therefore, in this study the electro-chemical detection of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) was achieved using a fluorene intercalated graphene oxide based CoQ10 imprinted polymer composite modified glassy carbon electrode (CoQ10-IGOPC/GCE). The synthesized sensing material was characterized using SEM, XRD and FT-IR to determine the morphology and functional properties. The CoQ10-IGOPC/GCE was characterized by EIS for its electrochemical properties. CoQ10 was detected selectively using Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV). Under ideal circumstances, a linear calibration curve with a correlation coefficient (R 2) of 0.991 was produced in the concentration range of 0.0967 to 28.7 μM. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were found to be 0.029 and 0.0967 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed electrochemical sensor was extremely selective, accurate and thoroughly validated with RSD values less than 5%. The developed CoQ10-IGOPC/GCE based electrochemical sensor was successfully used for the detection of CoQ10 in samples of fruits, vegetables, nuts, human blood serum and pharmaceuticals. The CoQ10-IGOPC/GCE based electrochemical method showed good percent recoveries ranging from 94 to 103 percent.

Abstract
Screen-printed graphene electrodes (SPGEs) have become a potential option in electrochemical applications because of their outstanding properties and disposable approach to miniaturize the electrodes for onsite analysis. Herein, the detection of para-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) in cosmetics using the anodized SPGE has been pioneered and reported. The simple anodization of the SPGE surface was operated by anodic pretreatment at a constant potential on SPGE. The surface morphologies and electrochemical behaviors of anodized SPGEs in different anodization electrolytes were examined. Using anodized SPGE in a phosphate-buffered solution, a nontoxic solution, the sensitivity of PHBA detection was significantly improved compared with pristine SPGE owing to the increase of the polar oxygen-containing functional group during the anodization. The anodized SPGE could detect a PHBA down to 0.073 μmol/L. Finally, the developed anodized SPGE presented high ability and feasibility for PHBA detection in cosmetics. Furthermore, a facile electrode preparation step with a nontoxic solution can present high reproducibility and compatibility with a portable potentiostat for onsite PHBA detection during manufacturing.

Abstract
This review highlights the biological importance of mitochondrial energy metabolism and the applications of multiple optical/electrochemical approaches to determine energy metabolites. Mitochondria, the main sites of oxidative phosphorylation and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) biosynthesis, provide the majority of energy required by aerobic cells for maintaining their physiological activity. They also participate in cell growth, differentiation, information transmission, and apoptosis. Multiple mitochondrial diseases, caused by internal or external factors, including oxidative stress, intense fluctuations of the ionic concentration, abnormal oxidative phosphorylation, changes in electron transport chain complex enzymes and mutations in mitochondrial DNA, can occur during mitochondrial energy metabolism. Therefore, developing accurate, sensitive, and specific methods for the in vivo and in vitro detection of mitochondrial energy metabolites is of great importance. In this review, we summarise the mitochondrial structure, functions, and crucial energy metabolic signalling pathways. The mechanism and applications of different optical/electrochemical methods are thoroughly reviewed. Finally, future research directions and challenges are proposed.

Abstract
A novel voltammetric sensor based on CeO2·Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) has been developed for the determination of lipoic acid, playing an essential role in aerobic metabolism in the living organism. Sensor surface modification provides a 5.6-fold increase of the lipoic acid oxidation currents and a 20 mV anodic shift of the oxidation potential. The best voltammetric parameters have been obtained for the 0.5 mg mL-1 dispersion of CeO2·Fe2O3 NPs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirms the presence of spherical NPs of 25-60 nm, and their aggregates evenly distributed on the electrode surface and formed porous coverage. This leads to the 4.4-fold increase of the effective surface area vs. bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The sensor shows a significantly higher electron transfer rate. Electrooxidation of lipoic acid on CeO2·Fe2O3 NPs modified GCE is an irreversible diffusion-controlled pH-independent process occurring with the participation of two electrons. The sensor gives a linear response to lipoic acid in the ranges of 0.075-7.5 and 7.5-100 μM with the detection limit of 0.053 μM. The sensor is selective towards lipoic acid in the presence of inorganic ions, ascorbic acid, saccharides, and other S-containing compounds. The sensor developed has been tested on the pharmaceutical dosage forms of lipoic acid.

Abstract
Abstract
A simple, highly sensitive, and selective differential pulse voltammetry method for the determination of α-lipoic acid (LA) in pharmaceutical preparations was developed and validated. The method is based on a quasi-reversible, diffusion-controlled, one-electron anodic oxidation of LA on a boron-doped diamond electrode (BDDE) in a McIlvaine (citrate-phosphate, C-PB) buffer solution at pH 3.0. For the first time, this environment was used for LA determination. A linear calibration curve was obtained within the concentration range 5.82 × 10−8 to 4.00 × 10−4 mol L−1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9999. The limits of detection was estimated to be 1.94 × 10−8 mol L−1, which is one of the lowest values characteristic of voltammetric and chromatographic methods of LA determination. The proposed procedure is sensitive, accurate, and precise. Its utility was demonstrated in the determination of LA in pharmaceuticals without the need for its separation from the matrices. The results were comparable to those obtained by high performance liquid chromatography reference method and were in good accordance with the once declared by manufacturers. Thus, our method can be considered as an alternative to the dominant chromatographic determinations of α-LA in real samples.

Abstract
Antioxidants are compounds that prevent or delay the oxidation process, acting at a much smaller concentration, in comparison to that of the preserved substrate. Primary antioxidants act as scavenging or chain breaking antioxidants, delaying initiation or interrupting propagation step. Secondary antioxidants quench singlet oxygen, decompose peroxides in non-radical species, chelate prooxidative metal ions, inhibit oxidative enzymes. Based on antioxidants’ reactivity, four lines of defense have been described: Preventative antioxidants, radical scavengers, repair antioxidants, and antioxidants relying on adaptation mechanisms. Carbon-based electrodes are largely employed in electroanalysis given their special features, that encompass large surface area, high electroconductivity, chemical stability, nanostructuring possibilities, facility of manufacturing at low cost, and easiness of surface modification. Largely employed methods encompass voltammetry, amperometry, biamperometry and potentiometry. Determination of key endogenous and exogenous individual antioxidants, as well as of antioxidant activity and its main contributors relied on unmodified or modified carbon electrodes, whose analytical parameters are detailed. Recent advances based on modifications with carbon-nanotubes or the use of hybrid nanocomposite materials are described. Large effective surface area, increased mass transport, electrocatalytical effects, improved sensitivity, and low detection limits in the nanomolar range were reported, with applications validated in complex media such as foodstuffs and biological samples.

Abstract
The high requirement for food quality control has inspired the creation of high-performance sensing, cost-effectiveness, and ease to use. Therefore, the aim of this work is to develop nonenzymatic electrochemical platforms for direct detection of histamine using unmodified screen-printed graphene electrodes (SPGEs) for their applications such as evaluation of fish freshness. In alkaline media (0.2 M NaOH), unmodified SPGEs showed a very low oxidation potential of histamine at +0.58 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) avoiding perturbations from other biogenic amines. The developed method offers an excellent selectivity, sensitivity (a limit of detection (at 3SD/slope) of 0.62 mg L-1) and wide working linear range (5-100 mg L-1) for histamine detection. In addition, the proposed method was successfully applied to detect histamine in canned fish samples with recovery values ranging from 90.72% to 101.21%. Therefore, this newly proposed method is promising as an alternative choice for the determination of histamine in fish samples and related food products.

Abstract
The influence of Ag and Au nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets on the photodegradation of α-lipoic acid (ALA) was determined by UV-VIS spectroscopy. The ALA photodegradation was explained by considering the affinity of thiol groups for the metallic nanoparticles synthesized in the presence of trisodium citrate. The presence of excipients did not induce further changes when ALA interacts with Ag and Au nanoparticles with sizes of 5 and 10 nm by exposure to UV light. Compared to the Raman spectrum of ALA powder, changes in Raman lines' position and relative intensities when ALA has interacted with films obtained from Au nanoparticles with sizes between 5 and 50 nm were significant. These changes were explained by considering the chemical mechanism of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. The photodegradation of ALA that had interacted with metallic nanoparticles was inhibited in the presence of RGO sheets.

Abstract
Bisphenol analogues have been developed as alternatives to bisphenol A (BPA), a common chemical with potential adverse effects on human health. It is imperative to perform a fast and sensitive evaluation for the toxicity of these bisphenol analogues. This study introduces a label-free electrochemical biosensor based on a screen-printed electrode modified with the carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube/rhodamine B/gold nanoparticle. Ctenopharyngodon idella kidney (CIK) cells were used as the biological recognition agent to detect changes in electrochemical signals and indicate the cell viability. Only 20 μL of sample was required for detection, which was much lower than that of other conventional electrochemical methods (≥ 1 mL). This biosensor was examined for the cytotoxicity of BPA, bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol B (BPB), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS) to CIK cells. The half inhibition concentration (IC50) values after 48 h of exposure indicated that the rank order of cytotoxicities was BPAF > BPB > BPA > BPF > BPS. The morphological changes in CIK cells after treatment with various bisphenols were investigated, and the combined toxicities of the binary bisphenol mixtures were determined. Potentially synergistic and additive effects were observed. These findings provide new insights into the cytotoxicity of bisphenol analogues.

P,N Codoped carbon dots as an efficient "off-on" fluorescent probe for lipoic acid detection and its cellular dual-color imaging. Anal Bioanal Chem 2019; 411:3603-3612. [PMID: 31129691 DOI: 10.1007/s00216-019-01842-x] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/15/2019] [Revised: 02/21/2019] [Accepted: 04/10/2019] [Indexed: 12/14/2022]
Abstract
A facile single hydrothermal method was developed to synthetize P,N codoped carbon dots (P,N/CDs), which show strong and stable fluorescence, good water solubility, low toxicity and good biocompatibility. Hence, a novel and efficient "off-on" P,N/CDs fluorescent probe was developed for the highly sensitive detection of lipoic acid (LA) for the first time. The fluorescence of the P,N/CDs was quenched by Cu2+ forming a P,N/CDs-Cu2+ complex, which acted as the "off" process, but Cu2+ could be removed by LA, due to stronger chelating between LA and Cu2+, forming a more stable complex, which recovered the fluorescence of the P,N/CDs, in order to achieve the "on" process. Under optimal conditions, the concentration of LA and the increased fluorescence intensity of the P,N/CDs-Cu2+ complex displayed a good linear relationship within the range of 0.05-28 μM, with a detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.02 μM. The established "off-on" fluorescent probe was successfully applied to the analysis of LA in urine samples. The average recoveries were in the range of 98.3-101.5%, with a relative standard deviations of less than 3.1%. In addition, the P,N/CDs were also successfully applied to cellular dual-color imaging of live T24 cells. The results show that the P,N/CDs have great application potential in clinical diagnosis, bioassay and bioimaging. Graphical abstract.
