A di-functional and label-free carbon-based chem-nanosensor for real-time monitoring of pH fluctuation and quantitative determining of Curcumin

Ratiometric fluorescence method comprising carbon dots and rhodamine 6G encapsulated in metal-organic framework microcubes for curcumin detection

A ratiometric fluorescence method comprising carbon dots (CDs) and rhodamine 6G (Rh-6G) encapsulated in the microcubes of metal-organic framework (MOF-5) is introduced for the sensitive detection of curcumin (Cur) in condiments. CDs@MOF-5@Rh-6G, synthesized by the adsorption of Rh-6G on MOF-5 embedded with CDs, showed two distinct emission peaks at 435 and 560 nm under excitation at 335 nm, and could be used for Cur detection by ratiometric fluorescence. In the presence of Cur, the fluorescence of the CDs at 435 nm (F435) was quenched by Cur owing to internal filtering and dynamic quenching effects, whereas the emission of Rh-6G at 560 nm (F560) remained unchanged (335 nm is the excitation wavelength, 435 and 560 nm are the emission wavelengths, in which F435/F560 values are used as the output results). Under optimal conditions, a linear relationship was observed between the Cur concentration (in the range 0.1-5 μmol/L) and F435/F560 value for CDs@MOF-5@Rh-6G, with a detection limit of 15 nmol/L. Notably, the proposed method could accurately detect Cur in mustard, curry, and red pepper powders. Therefore, this study could improve the quality control of food and facilitate the development of sensitive ratiometric fluorescence probes.

The Application of Carbon Nanomaterials in Sensing, Imaging, Drug Delivery and Therapy for Gynecologic Cancers: An Overview

Gynecologic cancers are one of the main health concerns of women throughout the world, and the early diagnosis and effective therapy of gynecologic cancers will be particularly important for the survival of female patients. As a current hotspot, carbon nanomaterials have attracted tremendous interest in tumor theranostics, and their application in gynecologic cancers has also been developed rapidly with great achievements in recent years. This Overview Article summarizes the latest progress in the application of diverse carbon nanomaterials (e.g., graphenes, carbon nanotubes, mesoporous carbon, carbon dots, etc.) and their derivatives in the sensing, imaging, drug delivery, and therapy of different gynecologic cancers. Important research contributions are highlighted in terms of the relationships among the fabrication strategies, architectural features, and action mechanisms for the diagnosis and therapy of gynecologic cancers. The current challenges and future strategies are discussed from the viewpoint of the real clinical application of carbon-based nanomedicines in gynecologic cancers. It is anticipated that this review will attract more attention toward the development and application of carbon nanomaterials for the theranostics of gynecologic cancers.

Integration detection of mercury(ii) and GSH with a fluorescent "on-off-on" switch sensor based on nitrogen, sulfur co-doped carbon dots

Using aurine and citric acid as precursors, we have synthesized stable blue-fluorescent nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NS-CDs), with a high quantum yield of up to 68.94% via a thermal lysis method. The fluorescent NS-CDs were employed as a sensitive sensor for the integration detection of Hg2+ and glutathione (GSH). This was attributed to Hg2+ effectively quenching the fluorescence of the NS-CDs by static quenching, and then GSH was able to recover the fluorescence owing to the stronger binding between Hg2+ and the sulfhydryl of GSH. Based on the "on-off-on" tactic, the detection limits of Hg2+ ions and GSH were 50 nM and 67 nM respectively. The fluorescence sensor was successfully applied to detect Hg2+ ions and GSH in actual samples (tap water and fetal bovine serum). Furthermore, we have proved that the sensor had good reversibility. Overall, our NS-CDs can serve as effective sensors for environmental and biological analysis in the future.

Copper nanocluster composites for analytical (bio)-sensing and imaging: a review

As an ideal substitute for traditional organic fluorescent dyes or up-conversion nanomaterials, copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) have developed rapidly and have been involved in exciting achievements in versatile applications. The emergence of novel CuNCs composites improves the poor stability and fluorescence intensity of CuNCs. With this in mind, great efforts have been made to develop a wide variety of CuNCs composites, and impressive progress has been made in the past few years. In this review, we systematically summarize absorption, fluorescence, electrochemiluminescence, and catalytic properties and focus on the multiple factors that affect the fluorescence properties of CuNCs. The fluorescence properties of CuNCs are discussed from the point of view of core size, surface ligands, self-assembly, metal defects, pH, solvent, ions, metal doping, and confinement effect. Especially, we illustrate the research progress and representative applications of CuNCs composites in bio-related fields, which have received considerable interests in the past years. Additionally, the sensing mechanism of CuNCs composites is highlighted. Finally, we summarize current challenges and look forward to the future development of CuNCs composites. One-step synthesis of red emission multifunctional carbon dots for label-free detection of berberine and curcumin and cell imaging

In this work, the red emission multifunctional carbon dots (R-CDs) were prepared via one-pot hydrothermal strategy of neutral red (NR) and ethylenediamine (EDA) for the label-free detection of berberine and curcumin, cell imaging, and fluorescent flexible film. The as-fabricated R-CDs not only possess good water dispersibility and excellent fluorescence stability, but also were successfully employed as a photoluminescent nanoprobe for label-free monitoring of berberine (BRH) and curcumin (Cur) based on dynamic quenching and internal filter effect (IFE), respectively. More importantly, as-proposed R-CDs displayed outstanding cellular permeability and lower cytotoxicity for cellular applications, which was consistent with the results of confocal fluorescence imaging and cell viability measurement of SMMC7721 cells. Thus, the multifunctional R-CDs may provide a rich tool library for biosensing and cellular imaging reagent applications. Interestingly, R-CDs were also used to manufacture R-CDs/PVA composites as fluorescent flexible films. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a label-free multifunctional fluorescent nanoprobe for berberine and curcumin based on red emission CDs.
