Roles of metal, ligand and post synthetic modification on metal organic frameworks to extend their hydrophobicity and applicability toward ultra-trace determination of priority organic pollutants

Incorporation of Cu-TATAB metal-organic framework within polyurethane nanocomposite for enhanced thin film microextraction of some chlorinated pesticides

In this research, electrospun nanofibers based on copper-based metal organic framework (MOF)/polyurethane (PU) were prepared in order to achieve an applicable and superior extractive phase. The incorporation of MOF, in the synthesized nanocomposite contributed to the enhanced sorption efficiency. The prepared sorbent was implemented for the thin film microextraction (TFME) of target compounds with subsequent quantification using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). To obtain the maximum efficiency of the synthesized sorbent, the influential parameters on extraction and desorption steps, including the MOF percentage in nanocomposite, desorption solvent type and its volume, desorption time, solution ionic strength and extraction time were optimized. After method development, the linear dynamic range (0.02-700 μg L-1), limits of detection (LODs) (0.005-0.1 μg L-1) and limits of quantification (LOQs))0.02-0.33 μg L-1(were calculated. The relative standard deviations values for intra-day and inter-day analysis were found to be in the range of 4.3-5.3 % and 6.2-8.1 %, respectively. The developed method was validated for the TFME of model organochlorine (OC) pesticide residues in fish, soil and water samples. the recovery values for the spiked samples at two concentration levels of 5 and 100 µg l-1 were found in the range of 72-110 %.

Preparation of MIL-101(Cr)-NH2@TAPB-DVA-COF based membrane solid-phase extraction for efficient enrichment and sensitive determination of trace aromatic disinfection by-products in juice drinks

Aromatic disinfection by-products (DBPs) have garnered considerable interest in recent years for their potential carcinogenicity. However, efficient separation and enrichment of DBPs in complex samples is a challenge due to the extremely low content of aromatic DBPs and the complexity of sample matrices. In this study, a MIL-101(Cr)-NH2@TAPB-DVA-COF hybrid material was prepared as the enrichment medium of membrane solid-phase extraction (M-SPE) to efficiently determine trace emerging aromatic DBPs. This medium exhibited excellent enrichment capacity and selectivity for aromatic DBPs because of the strong hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions. An efficient analytical method for five aromatic DBPs in juice drinks was successfully established by use of this hybrid material as the enrichment medium for M-SPE in combination with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The limits of detection of the established method were from 0.50 to 3.00 ng/L. Moreover, the method had been successfully used in real juice drinks to determine trace five aromatic DBPs with the spiked recoveries ranging from 84.1% to 125%. The method possessed high analytical sensitivity and accuracy for these five aromatic DBPs in juice drinks with the aid of the efficient M-SPE technology proposed.

Rapid and quantitative determination of deoxynivalenol in cereal through the combination of magnetic solid-phase extraction and optical fiber-based homogeneous chemiluminescence immunosensor

An integrated strategy for the rapid and sensitive detection of deoxynivalenol in cereals was developed by combining Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticle-modified metal organic framework-5-based magnetic solid-phase extraction and the optical fiber-based homogeneous chemiluminescence immunosensor. The hybrid magnetic material was prepared and characterized, exhibiting good enrichment capacity up to 1.68 mg/g. The competitive immunoassay-based homogeneous chemiluminescence immunosensor enabled washing-free and high-sensitivity detection of deoxynivalenol. Under optimized conditions, this immunosensor could detect deoxynivalenol as low as 46.7 pg/mL with a quantitatively linear range of 0.1 to 1000 ng/mL. The recoveries of this integrated detection strategy in rice, corn, and wheat ranged from 80.0 % to 118.2 %, 91.1 % to 116.7 %, and 80.0 % to 91.5 %, respectively, with a relative standard deviation that did not exceed 9.11 %. More importantly, it shows great consistency with the high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in blind sample analysis. This integrated detection strategy provides a convenient approach for mycotoxins screening in cereals.

Overview of Recent Development of Needle-Trap Devices for Analysis of Volatile Compounds

Needle-trap devices (NTDs) are another sorbent-based tool in the haystack of methods used in analytical extractions. Syringe needles, similar to those used for gas chromatography (GC) injection, can be partially filled with suitable sorbents and are used for extracting and collecting volatile organics, followed by injection into a GC instrument via thermal desorption. Although NTDs share many similarities and advantages of solid-phase microextraction (SPME), the larger sorbent bed provides robustness and offers potentially exhaustive extractions. This month, we take a look at the principles and applications of NTDs, and recent developments in their use.
