Curcumin graphite pencil electrode modified with molybdenum disulfide nanosheets decorated gold foams for simultaneous quantification of nitrite and hydrazine in water samples

Fabrication of Curcumin-Based Electrochemical Nanosensors for the Detection of Environmental Pollutants: 1,4-Dioxane and Hydrazine

This work reports the development of novel curcuminoid-based electrochemical sensors for the detection of environmental pollutants from water. In this study, the first set of electrochemical experiments was carried out using curcumin-conjugated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-CM) for 1,4-dioxane detection. The MWCNT-CM/GCE showed good sensitivity (103.25 nA nM-1 cm-2 in the linear range 1 nM to 1 µM), with LOD of 35.71 pM and LOQ of 108.21 pM. The second set of electrochemical experiments was carried out with bisdemethoxy curcumin analog quantum dots (BDMCAQD) for hydrazine detection. The BDMCAQD/GCE exhibited good sensitivity (74.96 nA nM-1 cm-2 in the linear range 100 nM to 1 µM), with LOD of 10 nM and LOQ of 44.93 nM. Thus, this work will serve as a reference for the fabrication of metal-free electrochemical sensors using curcuminoids as the redox mediator for the enhanced detection of environmental pollutants.

A CTAB-assisted PANI-MoS2 nanosheet flower morphology for the highly sensitive electrochemical detection of hydrazine

In this work, cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted polyaniline-molybdenum disulfide (CPANI-MoS2) nanosheets with a flower morphology have been synthesized through in situ polymerization and a hydrothermal method. The composite was analyzed for structural modification through X-ray diffraction (XRD) to examine chemical changes and the presence of functional groups via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy techniques. The surface morphology was identified by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) techniques. The CPANI-MoS2 nanosheet glassy carbon electrode (GCE) offers a novel strategy for the electrochemical detection of carcinogenic hydrazine. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve demonstrated a quasi-reversible behaviour with a high-surface area. Furthermore, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) analysis of hydrazine detection showed a wide linear range from 10 μM to 100 μM, a low limit of detection of 0.40 μM, and a high sensitivity of 7.23 μA μM cm-2. The determination of hydrazine in a water sample and the recovery percentage were found to be 100.31% and 103.73%, respectively. The CPANI-MoS2 nanosheet GCE significantly contributed to the high electroanalytical oxidation activity due to the CTAB surfactant modifying the flower-like nanosheet morphology, which enables the easy adsorption of hydrazine analyte species and exhibits a high current rate with a rapid detection response.

Pencil Graphite Electrocatalytic Sensors Modified by Pyrene Coated Reduced Graphene Oxide Decorated with Molybdenum Disulfide Nanoroses for Hydrazine and 4-Nitrophenol Detection in Real Water Samples

Novel nanostructured platforms based on Pencil Graphite Electrodes (PGEs), modified with pyrene carboxylic acid (PCA) functionalized Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO), and then decorated by chronoamperometry electrodeposition of MoS2 nanoroses (NRs) (MoS2NRs/PCA-rGO/PGEs) were manufactured for the electrocatalytic detection of hydrazine (N2H4) and 4-nitrophenol, pollutants highly hazardous for environment and human health. The surface morphology and chemistry of the MoS2NRs/PCA-rGO/PGEs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), assessing the coating of the PCA-rGO/PGEs by dense multilayers of NRs. N2H4 and 4-nitrophenol have been monitored by Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV), and the MoS2NRs/PCA-rGO/PGEs electroanalytical properties have been compared to the PGEs, as neat and modified by PCA-rGO. The MoS2NRs/PCA-rGO/PGEs demonstrated a higher electrochemical and electrocatalytic activity, due to their high surface area and conductivity, and very fast heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics at the interphase with the electrolyte. LODs lower than the U.S. EPA recommended concentration values in drinking water, namely 9.3 nM and 13.3 nM, were estimated for N2H4 and 4-nitrophenol, respectively and the MoS2NRs/PCA-rGO/PGEs showed good repeatability, reproducibility, storage stability, and selectivity. The effectiveness of the nanoplatforms for monitoring N2H4 and 4-nitrophenol in tap, river, and wastewater was addressed.

Curcumin Electrochemistry-Antioxidant Activity Assessment, Voltammetric Behavior and Quantitative Determination, Applications as Electrode Modifier

Curcumin (CU) is a polyphenolic compound extracted from turmeric, a well-known dietary spice. Since it has been shown that CU exerts beneficial effects on human health, interest has increased in its use but also in its analysis in different matrices. CU has an antioxidant character and is electroactive due to the presence of phenolic groups in its molecule. This paper reviews the data reported in the literature regarding the use of electrochemical techniques for the assessment of CU antioxidant activity and the investigation of the voltammetric behavior at different electrodes of free or loaded CU on various carriers. The performance characteristics and the analytical applications of the electrochemical methods developed for CU analysis are compared and critically discussed. Examples of voltammetric investigations of CU interaction with different metallic ions or of CU or CU complexes with DNA as well as the CU applications as electrode modifiers for the enhanced detection of various chemical species are also shown.

Morphological Effects of Au Nanoparticles on Electrochemical Sensing Platforms for Nitrite Detection

Au nanoparticles were synthesized in a soft template of pseudo-polyanions composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) by the in situ reduction of chloroauric acid (HAuCl₄) with PVP. The particle sizes and morphologies of the Au nanoparticles were regulated with concentrations of PVP or SDS at room temperature. Distinguished from the Au nanoparticles with various shapes, Au nanoflowers (AuNFs) with rich protrusion on the surface were obtained at the low final concentration of SDS and PVP. The typical AuNF synthesized in the PVP (50 g·L^-1)-SDS (5 mmol·L^-1)-HAuCl₄ (0.25 mmol·L^-1) solution exhibited a face-centered cubic structure dominated by a {111} crystal plane with an average equivalent particle size of 197 nm and an average protrusion height of 19 nm. Au nanoparticles with four different shapes, nanodendritic, nanoflower, 2D nanoflower, and nanoplate, were synthesized and used to modify the bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to obtain Au/GCEs, which were assigned as AuND/GCE, AuNF/GCE, 2D-AuNF/GCE, and AuNP/GCE, respectively. Electrochemical sensing platforms for nitrite detection were constructed by these Au/GCEs, which presented different detection sensitivity for nitrites. The results of cyclic voltammetry (CV) demonstrated that the AuNF/GCE exhibited the best detection sensitivity for nitrites, and the surface area of the AuNF/GCE was 1.838 times of the bare GCE, providing a linear c(NO₂^-) detection range of 0.01-5.00 µmol·L^-1 with a limit of detection of 0.01 µmol·L^-1. In addition, the AuNF/GCE exhibited good reproducibility, stability, and high anti-interference, providing potential for application in electrochemical sensing platforms.

Fabrication of a Disposable Amperometric Sensor for the Determination of Nitrite in Food

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized through an environmentally friendly method with tea extract as a reduction agent. By immobilizing them on the surface of a low-cost pencil graphite electrode (PGE) with the aid of a simple and well-controlled in-situ electropolymerization method, a novel nanosensing interface for nitrite was constructed. The film-modified PGE showed good electrocatalytic effects on the oxidation of nitrite and was characterized through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques. Characterization results clearly show that the successful modification of AgNPs improved the surface area and conductivity of PGEs, which is beneficial to the high sensitivity and short response time of the nitrite sensor. Under the optimal detection conditions, the oxidation peak current of nitrite had a good linear relationship with its concentration in the range of 0.02-1160 μmol/L with a detection limit of 4 nmol/L and a response time of 2 s. Moreover, the sensor had high sensitivity, a wide linear range, a good anti-interference capability, and stability and reproducibility. Additionally, it can be used for the determination of nitrite in food.

Core-shell nanocomposite of flower-like molybdenum disulfide nanospheres and molecularly imprinted polymers for electrochemical detection of anti COVID-19 drug favipiravir in biological samples

A novel electrochemical sensor is reported for the detection of the antiviral drug favipiravir based on the core–shell nanocomposite of flower-like molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) nanospheres and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). The MoS₂@MIP core–shell nanocomposite was prepared via the electrodeposition of a MIP layer on the MoS₂ modified electrode, using o-phenylenediamine as the monomer and favipiravir as the template. The selective binding of target favipiravir at the MoS₂@MIP core–shell nanocomposite produced a redox signal in a concentration dependent manner, which was used for the quantitative analysis. The preparation process of the MoS₂@MIP core–shell nanocomposite was optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the sensor exhibited a wide linear response range of 0.01 ~ 100 nM (1.57*10⁻⁶ ~ 1.57*10⁻² μg mL⁻¹) and a low detection limit of 0.002 nM (3.14*10⁻⁷ μg mL⁻¹). Application of the sensor was demonstrated by detecting favipiravir in a minimum amount of 10 μL biological samples (urine and plasma). Satisfied results in the recovery tests indicated a high potential of favipiravir monitoring in infectious COVID-19 samples.

Electrochemical Sensors Based on the Electropolymerized Natural Phenolic Antioxidants and Their Analytical Application

The design and fabrication of novel electrochemical sensors with high analytical and operational characteristics are one of the sustainable trends in modern analytical chemistry. Polymeric film formation by the electropolymerization of suitable monomers is one of the methods of sensors fabrication. Among a wide range of the substances able to polymerize, the phenolic ones are of theoretical and practical interest. The attention is focused on the sensors based on the electropolymerized natural phenolic antioxidants and their analytical application. The typical electropolymerization reaction schemes are discussed. Phenol electropolymerization leads to insulating coverage formation. Therefore, a combination of electropolymerized natural phenolic antioxidants and carbon nanomaterials as modifiers is of special interest. Carbon nanomaterials provide conductivity and a high working surface area of the electrode, while the polymeric film properties affect the selectivity and sensitivity of the sensor response for the target analyte or the group of structurally related compounds. The possibility of guided changes in the electrochemical response for the improvement of target compounds' analytical characteristics has appeared. The analytical capabilities of sensors based on electropolymerized natural phenolic antioxidants and their future development in this field are discussed.

Fabrication strategies and surface tuning of hierarchical gold nanostructures for electrochemical detection and removal of toxic pollutants

The intensive research on the synthesis and characterization of gold (Au) nanostructures has been extensively documented over the last decades. These investigations allow the researchers to understand the relationships between the intrinsic properties of Au nanostructures such as particle size, shape, morphology, and composition to synthesize the Au nano/hybrid nanostructures with novel physicochemical properties. By tuning the properties above, these nanostructures are extensively employed to detect and remove trace amounts of toxic pollutants from the environment. This review attempts to document the achievements and current progress in Au-based nanostructures, general synthetic and fabrication strategies and their utilization in electrochemical sensing and environmental remediation applications. Additionally, the applications of Au nanostructures (e.g., as adsorbents, sensing platforms, catalysts, and electrodes) and advancements in the field of electrochemical sensing of different target analytes (e.g., proteins, nucleic acids, heavy metals, small molecules, and antigens) are summarized. The literature survey concludes the existing methods for the detection of toxic contaminants at various concentration levels. Finally, the existing challenges and future research directions on electrochemical sensing and degradation of toxic contaminants using Au nanostructures are defined.
