A neuro-fuzzy approach for the diagnosis of depression

A neural network approach to optimising treatments for depression using data from specialist and community psychiatric services in Australia, New Zealand and Japan

This study investigated the application of a recurrent neural network for optimising pharmacological treatment for depression. A clinical dataset of 458 participants from specialist and community psychiatric services in Australia, New Zealand and Japan were extracted from an existing custom-built, web-based tool called Psynary . This data, which included baseline and self-completed reviews, was used to train and refine a novel algorithm which was a fully connected network feature extractor and long short-term memory algorithm was firstly trained in isolation and then integrated and annealed using slow learning rates due to the low dimensionality of the data. The accuracy of predicting depression remission before processing patient review data was 49.8%. After processing only 2 reviews, the accuracy was 76.5%. When considering a change in medication, the precision of changing medications was 97.4% and the recall was 71.4% . The medications with predicted best results were antipsychotics (88%) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (87.9%). This is the first study that has created an all-in-one algorithm for optimising treatments for all subtypes of depression. Reducing treatment optimisation time for patients suffering with depression may lead to earlier remission and hence reduce the high levels of disability associated with the condition. Furthermore, in a setting where mental health conditions are increasing strain on mental health services, the utilisation of web-based tools for remote monitoring and machine/deep learning algorithms may assist clinicians in both specialist and primary care in extending specialist mental healthcare to a larger patient community.

Development and use of a clinical decision support system for the diagnosis of social anxiety disorder

BACKGROUND

Mental disorders, according to the definition of World Health Organization, consist of a wide range of signs, which are generally specified by a combination of unusual thoughts, feelings, behavior, and relationships with others. Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most prevalent mental disorders, described as permanent and severe fear or feeling of embarrassment in social situations. Considering the imprecise nature of SAD symptoms, the main objective of this study was to generate an intelligent decision support system for SAD diagnosis, using Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) technique and to conduct an evaluation method, using sensitivity, specificity and accuracy metrics.

METHOD

In this study, a real-world dataset with the sample size of 214 was selected and used to generate the model. The method comprised a multi-stage procedure named preprocessing, classification, and evaluation. The preprocessing stage, itself, consists of three steps called normalization, feature selection, and anomaly detection, using the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) clustering method. The ANFIS technique with 5-fold cross-validation was used for the classification of social anxiety disorder.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

The preprocessed dataset with seven input features were used to train the ANFIS model. The hybrid optimization learning algorithm and 41 epochs were used as optimal learning parameters. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity metrics were reported 98.67%, 97.14%, and 100%, respectively. The results revealed that the proposed model was quite appropriate for SAD diagnosis and in line with findings of other studies. Further research study addressing the design of a decision support system for diagnosing the severity of SAD is recommended.

Artificial Intelligence for Mental Health and Mental Illnesses: an Overview

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology holds both great promise to transform mental healthcare and potential pitfalls. This article provides an overview of AI and current applications in healthcare, a review of recent original research on AI specific to mental health, and a discussion of how AI can supplement clinical practice while considering its current limitations, areas needing additional research, and ethical implications regarding AI technology.

RECENT FINDINGS

We reviewed 28 studies of AI and mental health that used electronic health records (EHRs), mood rating scales, brain imaging data, novel monitoring systems (e.g., smartphone, video), and social media platforms to predict, classify, or subgroup mental health illnesses including depression, schizophrenia or other psychiatric illnesses, and suicide ideation and attempts. Collectively, these studies revealed high accuracies and provided excellent examples of AI's potential in mental healthcare, but most should be considered early proof-of-concept works demonstrating the potential of using machine learning (ML) algorithms to address mental health questions, and which types of algorithms yield the best performance. As AI techniques continue to be refined and improved, it will be possible to help mental health practitioners re-define mental illnesses more objectively than currently done in the DSM-5, identify these illnesses at an earlier or prodromal stage when interventions may be more effective, and personalize treatments based on an individual's unique characteristics. However, caution is necessary in order to avoid over-interpreting preliminary results, and more work is required to bridge the gap between AI in mental health research and clinical care.

Neural Network-Based Diagnostic Tool for Identifying the Factors Responsible for Depression

The paper aims at establishing the output-to-input relationship of the real-life adult depression data using a neural network (NN) model. The said model has been developed to diagnose and detect the associated severity (grade) of the illness. An intelligent NN-based reverse model has been trained through batch mode and put to test on another set of real-life data. Reverse mapping of this model has been developed to isolate significantly contributing input components (factors) for any given case to expedite the preventive procedure for further deterioration as well as the start of treatment.
