Developmental Dyscalculia in Relation to Individual Differences in Mathematical Abilities

There is still much debate about the exact nature and frequency of developmental dyscalculia, and about how it should be defined. This article examines several key questions in turn: Is developmental dyscalculia a distinct disorder, or should it be seen as the lower end of a continuum-or possibly more than one continuum-of numerical ability? Do individuals with developmental dyscalculia show atypical brain structure or function? Does the study of acquired dyscalculia have anything to teach us about developmental dyscalculia? In studying dyscalculia, should we look less at arithmetical ability as a single entity, and more at separable components of arithmetical ability? How heterogeneous is developmental dyscalculia, and how important is it to study individual profiles? To what extent is developmental dyscalculia influenced by domain-specific versus domain-general abilities? The conclusion is that, though a significant amount has been discovered through existing research, and though this has some important implications for screening and diagnosis of dyscalculia, there is much more research that still needs to be conducted if we are to answer all of these questions fully. In particular, the study of developmental dyscalculia must be more integrated with the study of individual differences in mathematics in the population as a whole.

Math difficulties in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder do not originate from the visual number sense

There is ample evidence from literature and clinical practice indicating mathematical difficulties in individuals with ADHD, even when there is no concomitant diagnosis of developmental dyscalculia. What factors underlie these difficulties is still an open question. Research on dyscalculia and neurotypical development suggests visual perception of numerosity (the number sense) as a building block for math learning. Participants with lower numerosity estimation thresholds (higher precision) are often those with higher math capabilities. Strangely, the role of numerosity perception in math skills in ADHD has been neglected, leaving open the question whether math difficulties in ADHD also originate from a deficitary visual number sense. In the current study we psychophysically measured numerosity thresholds and accuracy in a sample of children/adolescents with ADHD, but not concomitant dyscalculia (N = 20, 8-16 years). Math abilities were also measured by tasks indexing different mathematical competences. Numerosity performance and math scores were then compared to those obtained from an age-matched control group (N = 20). Bayesian statistics indicated no difference between ADHD and controls on numerosity perception, despite many of the symbolic math tasks being impaired in participants with ADHD. Moreover, the math deficits showed by the group with ADHD remained substantial even when numerosity thresholds were statistically regressed out. Overall, these results indicate that math difficulties in ADHD are unlikely to originate from an impaired visual number sense.

Neural Correlates of Numerical Estimation: The Role of Strategy Use

Introduction: Computation estimation is the ability to provide an approximate answer to a complex arithmetic problem without calculating it exactly. Despite its importance in daily life, the neuronal network underlying computation estimation is largely unknown. Methods: We looked at the neuronal correlates of two computational estimation strategies: approximated calculation and sense of magnitude (SOM)–intuitive representation of magnitude, without calculation. During an fMRI scan, thirty-one college students judged whether the result of a two-digit multiplication problem was larger or smaller than a given reference number. In two different blocks, they were asked to use a specific strategy (AC or SOM). Results: The two strategies activated brain regions related to calculation, numerical cognition, decision-making, and working memory. AC more than SOM elicited activations in multiple, domain-specific brain regions in the parietal lobule, including the left SMG (BA 40), the bilateral superior parietal lobule (BA 7), and the right inferior parietal lobule (BA 7). The activation level of the IFG was positively correlated to individual accuracy, indicating that the IFG has an essential role in both strategies. Conclusions: These finding suggest that the analogic code of magnitude is more involved in the AC than the SOM strategy.

The co-occurrence of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and mathematical difficulties: An investigation of the role of basic numerical skills

BACKGROUND

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyscalculia, also called mathematics disorder, frequently co-occur, yet the etiology of this comorbidity is poorly understood.

AIMS

This study investigated whether impairments in the understanding of numbers and magnitudes (basic numerical skills) are a unique risk factor for mathematical difficulties (MD) or a shared risk factor that could help to explain the association between ADHD and MD.

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

Basic numerical skills were assessed with eight subtests in children (age 6-10 years, N = 86) with clinically significant ADHD symptoms and/or MD and typically developing children (control group). This double dissociation design allowed to test for main and interaction effects of ADHD and MD using both classical and Bayesian analysis of variance (ANOVA).

OUTCOMES AND RESULTS

Children with MD were impaired in transcoding, complex number and magnitude comparison, and arithmetic fact retrieval. They were not impaired in tasks assessing core markers of numeracy, which might be explained by the sample including children with mathematical difficulties instead of a diagnosed dyscalculia. ADHD was not associated with deficits in any of the tasks. The evidence for an additive combination of cognitive profiles was weak.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

Impairments in basic numerical skills are uniquely associated with MD and do not represent a shared risk factor for ADHD symptoms and MD.

Arithmetic in developmental cognitive disabilities

This paper reviews and discusses research on arithmetical strengths and weaknesses in children with specific developmental cognitive disabilities. It focusses on children with dyslexia, developmental language disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism. In general, studies show that arithmetical weaknesses are commoner in children with any of these disorders than in controls. Autism is sometimes associated with specific strengths in arithmetic; but even in autism, it is commoner for arithmetic to be a relative weakness than a relative strength. There may be some genetic reasons why there is an overlap between mathematical difficulties and other developmental learning difficulties; but much of the reason seems to be that specific aspects of arithmetic are often influenced by other factors, including language comprehension, phonological awareness, verbal and spatial working memory and long-term memory, and executive functions. The findings discussed here will be discussed in relation to Pennington's (2006) Multiple Deficit Model.

Damage to the Intraparietal Sulcus Impairs Magnitude Representations of Results of Complex Arithmetic Problems

Past research investigating the role of the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) in numerical processes focused mainly on quantity and numerical comparisons as well on single digit arithmetic. The present study investigates the involvement of the IPS in estimating the results of multi-digit multiplication problems. For this purpose, the performance a 24-year-old female (JD) with brain damage in the left IPS was compared to an age-matched control group in the computation estimation task. When required to estimate whether the results of multi-digit multiplication problems are smaller or larger than given reference numbers, JD, in contrast to controls, did not show the common patterns of distance and size effects. Her strategy use was also atypical. Most control participants used both the approximated calculation strategy that involves rounding and calculation procedures and the sense of magnitude strategy that relies on an intuitive approximated magnitude representation of the results. In contrast, JD used only the former but not the latter strategy. Together, these findings suggest that the damage to the IPS impaired JD's representations of magnitude that play an important role in this computation estimation task.

Do Exact Calculation and Computation Estimation Reflect the Same Skills? Developmental and Individual Differences Perspectives

Groups of children in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades and college students performed exact calculation and computation estimation tasks with two-digit multiplication problems. In the former they calculated the exact answer for each problem, and in the latter they estimated whether the result of each problem was larger or smaller than a given reference number. The analyses of speed and accuracy both showed different developmental patterns of the two tasks. While the accuracy of exact calculation increased with age in childhood, the accuracy of the estimation task reached its maximum level already in 4th grade and did not change with age. The reaction time of the exact calculation task was longer than that of the estimation task. The reaction time for both tasks remained constant in childhood and decreased in adulthood, with the improvement in speed larger for the exact calculation task. Similarly, within group variability in accuracy was larger in the exact calculation task than in the computation estimation task. Finally, low correlation was found between the accuracy of the two tasks. Together, these findings suggest that exact calculation and computation estimation reflect at least in part different skills.
