From Sin to Sexual Self-Awareness: Black Women's Reflection on Lifetime Masturbation

To date, there has been very little empirical research on Black women's masturbation practices and views on masturbation. This study fills the gap by exploring the messages Black women received about masturbation and self-pleasure and the sources of these messages using valence theory. Data were collected in 2021 from 242 Black women who participated in a survey during phase one of the triphasic Big Sex Study. Thematic analysis was used to analyze this short-form qualitative data. Results indicated a range of responses, with mixed messages reported more than negative, positive, and neutral messages. The three primary sources of messages were religion, family, and friends. There were several themes across the valence of messages including the development of positive messages, sexual self-awareness, masturbation as sin, health benefits and consequences, relationship difficulties, devaluation, and masturbation as dirty and gross. These results provide a basis for sexuality professionals to improve sociocultural knowledge about masturbation beliefs, practices, and message sources among Black women.

Community-Engaged Teen Pregnancy Prevention: A Needs Assessment

Teen birth is a contributor to significant challenges, including poverty, foster care, increased medical expenses, and high school dropout. Although teen birth rates have declined, disparities persist by state. Oklahoma's teen birth rate is fifth highest in the nation. Recognizing population-level change is not possible through the work of any single organization, Thrive is the convening leader of a multipartner collaboration called the Central Oklahoma Teen Pregnancy Prevention Collaboration. This collaboration utilizes the Collective Impact framework to bring organizations together to address teen pregnancy. The purpose of this article is to detail the consulting phase of the Collective Impact Community Engagement Toolkit, welcoming feedback from community members regarding programs. Method. Researchers conducted a mixed-methods needs assessment, including interviews and surveys with community-based organization staff, faith members, and caregivers. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26 and NVIVO 12 Pro. Results. A total of 350 surveys and 25 interviews were included in the analysis. Looking across all three populations, participants wanted to learn most about parent-child communication, communication skills with partners, and sexually transmitted infections/sexually transmitted diseases. Participants wanted topics delivered through educational programs, handouts/brochures, group settings, and websites. Common barriers were needing additional training/information, limited time, and lack of approval/support from others. Conclusions. This community needs assessment provided valuable information regarding needs of community-based organization staff, faith members, and parents related to adolescent sexual health. By including the community in needs assessments and using multiple tools, researchers/practitioners are able to see which strategies are best for gathering rich feedback and planning sustainable programs.

Moving from Needs Assessment to Intervention: Fathers' Perspectives on Their Needs and Support for Talk with Teens about Sex

Talk with fathers about sex and relationships can support teens' health, but its impact is limited as few fathers talk with their teens about sexual issues. Needs assessment and fathers' input on intervention content and structure can guide the development of programs that support fathers' health-promoting talk with their teen children about sex and relationships. In the present study, we explored fathers' goals in their talk with teens about sex and relationships and barriers they perceive to these conversations, as well as what they would look for in an intervention program. Content analysis was conducted using interviews in the U.S. with 43 fathers of high school-aged teens (age 14-18). Themes explored fathers' roles in talk with teens, key messages to teens, and approaches and barriers to conversations, in addition to attitudes toward an intervention, and feedback on intervention structure, content, and process. The findings suggest that fathers see talk with teens about sex as part of their roles, but face challenges in accomplishing this goal. Fathers' feedback highlights their openness to an intervention and can guide the development of a peer-based and interactive program that addresses how to talk with teens about sex in addition to the content of these conversations.
