Abstract
Purpose The impact of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) on choriocapillaris (CC) perfusion was investigated using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) imaging before and after surgery in patients with clinically significant carotid artery stenosis (CAS). Methods In this prospective observational study, patients with clinically significant CAS undergoing unilateral CEA had SS-OCTA imaging performed in both eyes before and within 1 week after surgery. The percent CC flow deficits (CC FD%) and CC thickness were assessed using previously validated algorithms. Multivariable regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of variables on the change in CC measurements. Results A total of 112 eyes from 56 patients with an average age of 72.6 ± 6.9 years were enrolled. At baseline, significantly higher CC FD% and thinner CC thickness were observed on the surgical side (eyes ipsilateral to the side of CEA) versus the nonsurgical side (eyes contralateral to the side of CEA) (P = 0.001 and P = 0.03, respectively). Following CEA, a significant reduction in CC FD% and a significant increase in CC thickness were detected on the surgical as compared with the nonsurgical side (P = 0.008 and P = 0.01, respectively). Smoking status positively affected CC FD% change (coefficient of variation [CV] = 0.84, P = 0.01) on the surgical side and negatively affected CC thickness change on both the surgical side (CV = -0.382, P = 0.009) and the nonsurgical side (CV = -0.321, P = 0.04). The degree of stenosis demonstrated a positive influence on CC FD% change (CV = 0.040, P = 0.02) on the surgical side. Conclusions Unilateral CEA on the side of clinically significant CAS increases carotid blood flow, which further results in improved CC perfusion.

Abstract
Purpose Progress toward treatment and prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) requires imaging end points that relate to vision. We investigated choriocapillaris flow signal deficits (FD%) and visual function in eyes of individuals aged ≥60 years, with and without AMD. Methods One eye of each participant in the baseline visit of the Alabama Study on Early Age-Related Macular Degeneration 2 (ALSTAR2; NCT04112667) was studied. AMD presence and severity was determined using the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) grading system. FD% was quantified using macular spectral domain optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) scans. Vision tests included rod-mediated dark adaptation (RMDA), best-corrected visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity (photopic and mesopic), and microperimetric light sensitivity (scotopic, mesopic, and photopic). Presence of subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDD) was determined using multimodal imaging. Results In 410 study eyes of 410 participants (mean [SD] age = 71.7 years [5.9]), FD% was higher in early AMD (mean [SD] = 54.0% [5.5], N = 122) and intermediate AMD (59.8% [7.4], N = 92), compared to normal (52.1% [5.3], N = 196) eyes. Among visual functions evaluated, RMDA showed the strongest association with FD% (r = 0.35, P < 0.0001), followed by contrast sensitivity (r = -0.22, P < 0.0001). Eyes with SDD had worse FD% (58.3% [7.4], N = 87), compared to eyes without SDD (53.4% [6.0], N = 323, P = < 0.0001). Conclusions Choriocapillaris FD% were associated with AMD severity and with impaired vision, especially RMDA. Reduced metabolic transport and exchange across the choriocapillaris-Bruch's membrane retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) complex, a causal factor for high-risk soft drusen formation, also may impair photoreceptor sustenance from the circulation. This includes retinoid resupply, essential to dynamic rod function.

Abstract
Purpose To determine if macular reticular pseudodrusen (RPD) were associated with markers of impaired macular choroidal perfusion, we investigated measurements of macular choriocapillaris (CC) flow deficits (FDs), CC thickness, and mean choroidal thickness (MCT) in eyes with macular RPD compared with normal eyes and eyes with soft drusen. Methods Eyes with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD) and normal eyes underwent 6 × 6 mm swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) imaging to diagnose macular RPD, occupying over 25% of the fovea-centered 5 mm diameter circle, and measure outer retinal layer (ORL) thickness, CC FDs, CC thickness, MCT, and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) using previously published strategies within the same fovea-centered 5 mm circle. Results Ninety eyes were included; 30 normal eyes, 30 eyes with soft drusen, and 30 eyes with macular RPD. The RPD eyes showed higher macular CC FDs than normal eyes (P < 0.001) and soft drusen eyes (P = 0.019). Macular CC thickness was decreased in RPD eyes compared with normal eyes (P < 0.001) and soft drusen eyes (P = 0.016). Macular MCT in RPD eyes was thinner than normal eyes (P = 0.005) and soft drusen eyes (P < 0.001). No statistically and clinically significant differences were found in the ORL thickness and CVI measurements between RPD eyes and the other two groups (all P > 0.05). Conclusions Eyes with macular RPD had decreased macular CC perfusion, decreased CC thickness, and decreased MCT measurements compared with normal and soft drusen eyes, suggesting that RPD may result from impaired choroidal perfusion.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the repeatability of flow signal voids (FSV) measurements of the choriocapillaris (CC) and choroid (CH) in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) by Swept-Source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). METHODS Cross-sectional study including 104 eyes of 52 patients with unilateral CSCR. Two consecutive macular 6x6 mm SS-OCTA scans (Plex Elite 9000; Zeiss, Dublin, CA) were obtained from the affected eyes with persistent subretinal fluid (SRF) (CSCR group) and the fellow unaffected eyes (control group). FSV area and the number of contours measurements were analyzed using three slabs: inner CC, outer CC and CH. The repeatability of the measurements was assessed with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and coefficients of variation (CV). RESULTS In the CSCR group, ICCs for the FSV area in the three slabs were all ≥0.859, observing higher values for the outer CC and the CH (0.959 and 0.964) than for the inner CC (0.859). Similar ICC values were obtained for the FSV area in control eyes, observing the highest values for the outer CC (0.949), followed by the CH (0.932) and inner CC (0.844). Regarding the FSV number of contours measurements, ICCs were higher for the outer CC and CH (0.949 and 0.932) than for inner CC (0.844). CV for the FSV area was 4.7%, 3.8% and 8.6% in the CSCR eyes and 4.8%, 3.9% and 9.3% in the control group for the inner CC, outer CC and CH respectively. CONCLUSION SS-OCTA offers good repeatability to quantify macular FSV in CSCR eyes and fellow eyes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare choriocapillaris flow deficit (CC-FD) analysis using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in eyes of patients treated with high cumulative dosages of pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS) but no signs of retinal toxicity versus healthy age-matched controls. DESIGN Retrospective clinical cohort study. METHODS Patients treated with PPS for interstitial cystitis with a cumulative dose of > 1000 g underwent multimodal imaging screening to exclude evidence of PPS maculopathy or other retinal findings. All study patients and age-matched healthy controls completed a 3 × 3 mm macular volume scan OCTA using the SOLIX full-range OCT. En face OCTA images at the level of the CC were exported and CC-FDs were computed and compared between groups. RESULTS Fifteen patients treated with PPS and 15 age-matched controls were included. The mean PPS cumulative dose was 1974 ± 666 g over a mean of 17.6 ± 6.8 treatment years. All patients registered a visual acuity of 20/25 or better and normal fundus autofluorescence (FAF), OCT, multicolor, near-infrared reflectance (NIR), and ultra-widefield fundus color and autofluorescence images. The CC-FD was 32.7 ± 3.6% in the PPS group compared with 28.6 ± 4.3% in the control group (P = .023). CONCLUSIONS Patients treated with PPS long enough to accumulate dosages > 1000 g showed significant CC flow impairment before the development of macular toxicity signs with OCT, NIR, and FAF compared with age-matched normal controls. Thus, the choroid may be the earliest manifestation of ocular toxicity, predating the development of clinically evident retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) injury. The subsequent RPE disruption may be the result of choriocapillaris impairment or primary PPS toxicity. Assessment of the CC on OCTA may be a useful tool for early detection of toxicity, although further longitudinal studies are required.

Abstract
Computerized texture analysis uses higher-order mathematics to identify patterns beyond what the naked eye can recognize. We tested its feasibility in optical coherence tomography angiography imaging of choriocapillaris. Our objective was to determine sets of parameters that provide coherent and consistent output when applied to a homogeneous, healthy group of patients. This observational cross-sectional study involved 19 eyes of 10 young and healthy Caucasian subjects. En-face macular optical coherence tomography angiography of superficial choriocapillaris was obtained by the RTVue-XR Avanti system. Various algorithms were used to extract texture features. The mean and standard deviation were used to assess the distribution and dispersion of data points in each metric among eyes, which included: average gray level, gray level yielding 70% threshold and 30% threshold, balance, skewness, energy, entropy, contrast, edge mean gradient, root-mean-square variation, and first moment of power spectrum, which was compared between images, showing a highly concordant homology between all eyes of participants. We conclude that computerized texture analysis for en-face optical coherence tomography angiography images of choriocapillaris is feasible and provides values that are coherent and tightly distributed around the mean in a homogenous, healthy group of patients. Homology of blob size among subjects may represent a “repeat pattern” in signal density and thus a perfusion in the superficial choriocapillaris of healthy young individuals of the same ethnic background.

Abstract
PURPOSE To provide an update on the hemodynamic model of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). DESIGN Evidence-based perspective. METHODS Review of the literature and experience of the authors. RESULTS Choroidal hemodynamics are not the primary cause of AMD as proposed by Ephraim Friedman in 1997. However, evidence is accumulating to suggest that choroidal perfusion is an important environmental influence that contributes to our understanding of disease progression in this complex genetic disorder. Although early and intermediate AMD seem to be influenced to a large extent by the underlying genetics, the asymmetry of disease progression to the later stages of AMD cannot be explained by genetics alone. The progression of disease and the asymmetry of this progression seem to correlate with abnormalities in choroidal perfusion that can be documented by optical coherence tomography. These perfusion abnormalities in the setting of a thickened Bruch's membrane are thought to exacerbate the impaired nutritional exchange between the retinal pigment epithelium and the choriocapillaris. We propose that the genetic susceptibility to develop AMD combined with age-related changes in macular choroidal hemodynamics, such as increasing choriocapillaris perfusion deficits and decreasing choroidal vascular densities, play an important role in disease progression and may help to explain the asymmetry between eyes, particularly in the later stages of AMD. CONCLUSIONS This updated hemodynamic model of AMD focuses on disease progression and highlights the importance of age-related changes in the choroidal circulation as a major environmental influence on disease severity in eyes that are genetically susceptible to develop AMD.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the relationship between large-sized and medium-sized choroidal vessels and choriocapillaris using the three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index (3D CVI) and percentage of flow deficits (FD%). METHODS Prospective observational study. The main outcome measures included choroidal volume parameters (3D CVI, mean choroidal thickness, total choroidal volume, choroidal luminal volume, and choroidal stromal volume), choriocapillaris parameters (FD%, average area of FD, and FD count), and age and axial length. RESULTS A total of 63 healthy individuals with an average age of 40.60 ± 12.32 years were included in this study. Univariate analysis showed that FD% (R = 0.295, P = 0.019) and area of FD (R = 0.276, P = 0.028) were significantly positively associated with 3D CVI, and FD count was negatively associated with 3D CVI (R = -0.297, P = 0.018). After adjusting for age and axial length, a significant correlation between FD% and 3D CVI (R = 0.264, P = 0.039) and between area of FD and 3D CVI remained (R = 0.267, P = 0.037). However, no significant correlation was found between FD count and 3D CVI after adjusting for axial length (R = -0.220, P = 0.085). CONCLUSION In healthy individuals, choroidal vessel dilatation as suggested by elevated 3D CVI may lead to decreased choriocapillaris perfusion, which was correlated with an enlarged area of FD in choriocapillaris.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze swept-source optical coherence angiography slab images acquired at the default level for the choriocapillaris from the Zeiss PLEX Elite 9000 before and after using a previously described imaging compensation technique. METHODS Eyes of normal subjects, in their 20 seconds and 30 seconds, were evaluated. Angiographic slab images, 20 µm in thickness, were taken at the default location of 29 to 49 µm below the retinal pigment epithelium. These images were evaluated, as were images that underwent a published compensation technique that adjusts for light penetration to the sampled layer. Each set of images was threshold at 1 SD below the mean. Visual comparison of the swept-source optical coherence angiography images along with a quantitative analysis using a novel parameter known as multiscale structural similarity index, a measure of image similarity, was performed. RESULTS Eleven eyes of 11 subjects were evaluated. The default location, 29 µm to 49 µm below the retinal pigment epithelium, showed the granular choriocapillaris appearance. Visual comparison showed that the compensation technique altered the appearance of the thresholded images, creating the appearance of new deficits while causing others to disappear. The mean multiscale structural similarity index for the original versus thresholded images and original versus thresholded compensated was 0.49 and 0.34, respectively, representing a statistically significant difference. CONCLUSION The findings of this study show that the use of a commonly used imaging compensation technique can have undesired effects on the image, and its use should be carefully considered. A model explaining the cause of such changes in the choriocapillaris swept-source optical coherence angiography images is presented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate potential changes in choroidal flow in patients with newly diagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder based on optical coherence tomography angiography findings and to investigate the relationship between subfoveal choroidal thickness and choriocapillaris flow area. METHODS This prospective study included newly diagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder patients and healthy controls. All patients underwent enhanced depth imaging-optical coherence tomography imaging to assess the subfoveal choroidal thickness and optical coherence tomography angiography imaging to evaluate the choriocapillaris flow area. RESULTS A total of 55 patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and 50 controls were included. The mean subfoveal choroidal thickness was significantly greater in the obsessive-compulsive disorder group compared to the control group (p˂0.001). Regarding the choriocapillaris flow area, the values for area with a radius of 1 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm were significantly lower in the obsessive-compulsive disorder group than in the control group (p=0.019, p=0.014, and p=0.004, respectively). There was a significant negative correlation between subfoveal choroidal thickness and choriocapillaris flow area with a radius of 1mm (r=-0.387, p=0.024). CONCLUSION Choroidal changes in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients suggest the choroidal features of uncomplicated pachychoroid. Obsessive-compulsive disorder may be prone to a spectrum of conditions characterized by pachychoroid features.

Abstract
PRECIS The peripapillary choriocapillaris (CC) was observed to be significantly impaired in normal tension glaucoma (NTG) subjects compared with normal controls using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). PURPOSE The aim was to quantitatively evaluate the peripapillary CC in NTG, primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), and control eyes using OCTA. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety eyes (30 controls, 30 NTG, and 30 POAG) from 73 patients were imaged using the Zeiss Plex Elite 9000. Five repeat 3×3 mm OCTA scans were acquired both nasally and temporally to the optic disc and subsequently averaged. Four CC flow deficit (FD) measures were calculated using the fuzzy C-means approach: FD density (FDD), mean FD size (MFDS), FD number (FDN), and FD area (FDA). RESULTS Temporal NTG CC parameters were associated with visual field index and mean deviation (P<0.05). The control group showed a significantly lower nasal FDD (nasal: 3.79±1.26%, temporal: 4.48±1.73%, P=0.03), FDN (nasal: 156.43±38.44, temporal: 178.40±45.68, P=0.02), and FDA (nasal: 0.22±0.08, temporal: 0.26±0.10, P=0.03) when compared with temporal optic disc. The NTG group showed a significantly higher FDD (NTG: 5.04±2.38%, control: 3.79±1.26%, P=0.03), FDN (NTG: 185.90±56.66, control: 156.43±38.44, P=0.04), and FDA (NTG: 0.30±0.14 mm2, control: 0.22±0.08 mm2, P=0.03) nasal to the optic disc compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS Association between CC parameters and glaucoma severity in NTG, but not POAG subjects, suggests vascular abnormalities may be a potential factor in the multifactorial process of glaucoma damage in NTG patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the reflectivity of the structural optical coherence tomography images of the inner choroid as it relates to potential structural composition. METHODS The reflectivity of slab images 29 to 49 µm and 45 to 65 µm below the retinal pigment epithelium, obtained with the Zeiss Plex Elite 9000, was evaluated. The mean and SD of a group of subjects with no ocular disorders were determined. Binarization of the images was performed and a threshold level established at the mean plus one SD for each slab depth. The proportion of area binarized was evaluated with generalized estimating equations. Representative histologic images obtained from autopsy donors were stained with Masson's trichrome, a staining method helpful in evaluating collagen and ground substance of tissue. RESULTS There were 67 eyes of 38 subjects with a mean age of 44.5 (range 22-82) years. Using generalized estimating equations, age was found to be a significant predictor for the proportion of binarized pixels in both the 29 to 49 µm (P = 0.034) and the 45 to 65 µm (P < 0.001) slabs. The histologic specimens illustrated the loss of ground substance with increasing compaction of collagen fibers in the choroidal stroma with advancing age. CONCLUSION The reflectivity from the inner choroid is not uniform and changes with age. As suggested by the histologic specimens, we propose the optical coherence tomography reflectance from the inner choroid is related, in part, to the packing density of collagen fibers present there.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential changes in choroidal vasculature in nodulocystic acne patients under isotretinoin treatment by using choroidal thickness (CT), choroidal vascularity index (CVI), and choriocapillaris (CC) flow area. MATERIALS AND METHODS This prospective study included nodulocystic acne patients under isotretinoin treatment and healthy controls. All patients underwent enhanced depth imaging-optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) imaging to assess the subfoveal CT and submacular CVI, and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) imaging to evaluate the CC flow area. RESULTS A total of 25 patients with acne and 23 controls were included. The mean duration of the treatment was 7.20 ± 0.79 months and the mean daily isotretinoin dose was 38.7 ± 2.8 mg in the acne group. The mean CT and CVI values were significantly higher in the acne group compared to the control group (p = 0.005 and p = 0.027, respectively). The cumulative isotretinoin dose was positively correlated with subfoveal CT and submacular CVI (r = 0.434, p = 0.015 and r = 0.385, p = 0.033, respectively). Regarding the CC flow area, the values for area with a radius of 1 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm were lower in the acne group than in the control group; however, the difference was not significant (p > 0.05, all values). CONCLUSION After a mean 7-month course of isotretinoin treatment, subfoveal CT and submacular CVI values were significantly higher in the nodulocyctic acne patients. Whether the choroidal changes are permanent or not should be investigated in future studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE A compensation strategy that was developed to measure the choriocapillaris (CC) flow deficits (FDs) under drusen was tested in eyes with large drusen from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) before and after the drusen spontaneously resolved without evidence of disease progression. DESIGN Prospective, observational consecutive case series. METHODS Patients with AMD were enrolled in a prospective swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) imaging study. Consecutive eyes with large drusen were followed, and eyes that underwent spontaneous collapse of drusen without evidence of disease progression were identified retrospectively. The drusen-resolved regions were manually outlined. CC FDs were measured using a previously published compensation strategy that adjusted for the decreased signal intensity underlying drusen. Both the percentage of FDs (FD%) and the mean FD sizes (MFDSs) were measured before and after drusen resolution. RESULTS Resolution of drusen was identified in 8 eyes from 8 patients. The average interval between the 2 visits was 7.8 months. The average drusen volumes measured between visits were 0.23 and 0.04 mm3, respectively. After the drusen resolved, the average follow-up time without evidence of disease progression was 10.1 months. When the 2 visits were compared, there were no statistically significant differences in any of the CC parameters within the drusen resolved regions once the compensation strategy was applied (all P values >.22). CONCLUSIONS In this naturally occurring experiment in which drusen collapsed without evidence of disease progression, the CC parameters were similar once our compensation strategy was applied both before and after the drusen resolved.

Abstract
The advent of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has allowed a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the retinal vasculature and the choriocapillaris. With the use of OCTA, several studies evaluated the changes in the choriocapillaris showing how this vascular structure plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of different conditions. This article reviews the current methods of analysis of the choriocapillaris and the relevant findings in different chorioretinal diseases.

Abstract
Background In this paper, we evaluate the different thresholding strategies that have been used for the quantification of the choriocapillaris (CC) and explore their repeatability and the interchangeability of the measurements resulting from its application. Methods Observational study. Eighteen eyes from nine healthy volunteers aged >18 years were imaged four consecutive times with a SD-OCTA system (Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) using a 10°×10° high-resolution protocol centered on the fovea. Projection artifacts were removed, and the CC was bracketed between 10 and 30 µm below Bruch's membrane. For the quantification of CC, we used four flow deficits (FD) parameters: FD number, mean FD size, total FD area and FD density. We performed a systematic review of literature to collect the thresholding methods that have been used for the quantification of CC. The CC quantification parameters were then evaluated after applying each of the thresholding strategies. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Pearson's correlation analysis were used to compare the repeatability and interchangeability among the different thresholding strategies for quantifying the CC. Results A total of 72 optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) examinations were considered. The systematic review allowed us to conclude that three local thresholding strategies (Phansalkar, mean and Niblack) and three global thresholding strategies (mean, default, Otsu) have been used for CC quantification. These strategies were evaluated in our observational study. We found a high agreement within the same method in the quantification of FD number, mean FD size, total FD area and FD density but a poor agreement with different strategies. Local strategies achieved a significantly superior ICC than global ones in CC quantification. Conclusions In conclusion, the interchangeability of the CC quantification using different thresholding strategies is low, and direct comparisons should not be performed. Local thresholding strategies are significantly superior to global ones for quantifying CC and should be preferred. There is an unmet need for a uniform strategy to quantify CC in future studies.

Abstract
Binarization is a critical step in analysis of retinal optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images, but the repeatability of metrics produced from various binarization methods has not been fully assessed. This study set out to examine the repeatability of OCTA quantification metrics produced using different binarization thresholding methods, all of which have been applied in previous studies, across multiple devices and plexuses. Successive 3 × 3 mm foveal OCTA images of 13 healthy eyes were obtained on three different devices. For each image, contrast adjustments, 3 image processing techniques (linear registration, histogram normalization, and contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization), and 11 binarization thresholding methods were independently applied. Vessel area density (VAD) and vessel length were calculated for retinal vascular images. Choriocapillaris (CC) images were quantified for VAD and flow deficit metrics. Repeatability, measured using the intra-class correlation coefficient, was inconsistent and generally not high (ICC < 0.8) across binarization thresholds, devices, and plexuses. In retinal vascular images, local thresholds tended to incorrectly binarize the foveal avascular zone as white (i.e., wrongly indicating flow). No image processing technique analyzed consistently resulted in highly repeatable metrics. Across contrast changes, retinal vascular images showed the lowest repeatability and CC images showed the highest.

Abstract
Especially since the incorporation of swept laser sources, optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has enabled quantification of choriocapillaris perfusion. A critical step in this process is binarization, which makes angiographic images quantifiable in terms of perfusion metrics. It remains challenging to have confidence that choriocapillaris perfusion metrics reflect the reality of pathophysiologic flow, largely because choice of binarization method can result in significantly different perfusion metric outcomes. This commentary discusses a proof-of-concept case involving comparative assessment of binarization methods for a set of dry age-related macular degeneration OCTA data. One of these methods was deemed preferable based on superior agreement with suspected physiologic and pathophysiologic characteristics, thus demonstrating the principle that, in the absence of gold standards for measurement of choriocapillaris perfusion, the best available approximations of pathophysiology may be used to guide choice of binarization method.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Despite the growing number of new research publications, normative references for children's optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters are still not completed. We chose to explore this topic because of the lack of normative parameters that is due to an improvement in different technologies and instruments. Our aim was to determine referential rates of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and flow deficits (FD%) in the macular choriocapillaris (CC) in normal eyes of ophthalmologically healthy children. Materials and Methods: Ophthalmologically healthy 8- to 14-year-old individuals participated (n = 75) in this study. OCT images were taken using an swept-source-OCT (SS-OCT) instrument (DRI-OCT Triton, Topcon, Tokyo, Japan). The early treatment diabetic retinopathy study (EDTRS) grid (6 × 6 mm) divided the RNFL into the thickness maps. The FD% values of the CC were calculated on the 3 × 3-mm scans in a 1-mm circle (C1), 1.5-mm rim (R1.5), and the entire 2.5-mm circle (C2.5), and on the 6 x 6-mm scans in a 1-mm circle (C1), 1.5-mm rim (R1.5), the entire 2.5-mm circle (C2.5), 2.5-mm rim (R2.5), and 5-mm circle (C5). Results: Both scan quantifications of FD% in the C1, C2.5, and R1.5 sectors were similar, but the 6 × 6-mm scan measurements were statistically significantly smaller than the 3 × 3-mm ones. Significant moderate correlations were found between axial length (AxL) and FD% in the 6 × 6-mm scans, namely C1 (r = -0.347, p = 0.002), C2.5 (r = -0.337, p = 0.003), R1.5 (r = -0.328, p = 0.004), R2.5 (r = -0.306, p = 0.008), and C5 (r = -0.314, p = 0.006). Conclusions: The thinnest RNFL layers were on the temporal and nasal sides. FD% values in the C1, C2.5, and R1.5 sectors were similar between the 3 × 3-mm and 6 × 6-mm scans. The negative moderate correlations between AxL and FD% were found in all C1, C2.5, C5, R1.5, and R2.5 sectors of the 6 × 6-mm scans. Further prospective studies are needed to determine more accurate normative references for children's OCT parameters.
