Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze the choroidal parameters of patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSC) and the association with central serous chorioretinopathy susceptibility genes. METHODS The choroidal vascular index (CVI) was obtained by binarizing spectral domain optical coherence tomography enhanced depth images of patients with cCSC and healthy age-matched controls. Patients with cCSC were genotyped for three central serous chorioretinopathy susceptibility single-nucleotide polymorphisms: rs4844392 ( mir-29b-2/CD46 ), rs1329428 ( CFH ), and rs2379120 (upstream GATA5 ). RESULTS One hundred three eyes with cCSC and 53 control eyes were included. There was a significant increase in the subfoveal choroidal area in both the affected (2.4 ± 0.6 mm 2 ) and fellow (2.2 ± 0.6 mm 2 ) eyes of patients with cCSC compared with controls (1.8 ± 0.5 mm 2 , P < 0.0001 and P < 0.0001). The CVI was reduced in patients with cCSC 63.5% ± 3.1% compared with controls 65.4% ± 2.3% ( P < 0.001) and also in the affected compared with the fellow eyes 64.6% ± 2.9% ( P < 0.01). There was a significant association between CVI in the cCSC group and presence of the risk single-nucleotide polymorphisms rs2379120 at GATA5 ( P < 0.01). CONCLUSION The relative reduction of CVI in patients with cCSC may suggest a persistence of vessel hyperpermeability over dilation in chronic disease. GATA5 is associated with CVI in patients with cCSC and therefore may have a role in choroidal vascularity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate changes in choroidal thickness in patients diagnosed with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) compared to healthy controls, using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS PubMed and Scopus databases were systematically searched for published articles comparing choroidal thickness between patients with PEX and healthy controls. Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was computed to compare continuous variables. Revman 5.4 was used for the analysis. Subgroup analyses were performed according to OCT devices used. RESULTS 12 studies were included in our analysis. Subfoveal choroidal thickness was decreased in patients with PEX compared to healthy controls. Subgroup analysis confirmed this finding in studies that used Heidelberg or Optovue OCT Devices. CONCLUSION Our meta-analysis showed that choroidal thickness was decreased in patients with PEX compared to controls. Increased heterogeneity and small case-control studies are the main limitations of the meta-analysis. Further studies are needed to evaluate the clinical significance of reduced subfoveal choroidal thickness in PEX.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the relationship of overweight and obesity with retinal and choroidal thickness in adults without ocular symptoms by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). METHODS According to the body mass index (BMI) results, the adults enrolled in the cross-sectional study were divided into the normal group (18.50≤BMI<25.00 kg/m2), the overweight group (25.00≤BMI<30.00 kg/m2), and the obesity group (BMI≥30.00 kg/m2). The one-way ANOVA and the Chi-square test were used for comparisons. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationships between the measured variables. RESULTS This research covered the left eyes of 3 groups of 434 age- and sex-matched subjects each: normal, overweight, and obesity. The mean BMI was 22.20±1.67, 26.82±1.38, and 32.21±2.35 kg/m2 in normal, overweight and obesity groups, respectively. The choroid was significantly thinner in both the overweight and obesity groups compared to the normal group (P<0.05 for all), while the retinal thickness of the three groups did not differ significantly. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that BMI was significantly negatively correlated with choroidal thickness, but no significant correlation was observed between BMI and retinal thickness. CONCLUSION Choroidal thickness is decreased in people with overweight or obesity. Research on changes in choroidal thickness contributes to the understanding of the mechanisms of certain ocular disorders in overweight and obese adults.

Abstract
Purpose To determine whether light chromaticity without defocus induced by longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA) is sufficient to regulate eye growth. Methods An interferometric setup based on a spatial light modulator was used to illuminate the dominant eyes of 23 participants for 30 minutes with three aberration-free stimulation conditions: (1) short wavelength (450 nm), (2) long wavelength (638 nm), and (3) broadband light (450-700 nm), covering a retinal area of 12°. The non-dominant eye was occluded and remained as the control eye. Axial length and choroidal thickness were measured before and after the illumination period. Results Axial length increased significantly from baseline for short-wavelength (P < 0.01, 7.4 ± 2.2 µm) and long-wavelength (P = 0.01, 4.8 ± 1.7 µm) light. The broadband condition also showed an increase in axial length with no significance (P = 0.08, 5.1 ± 3.5 µm). The choroidal thickness significantly decreased in the case of long-wavelength light (P < 0.01, -5.7 ± 2.2 µm), but there was no significant change after short-wavelength and broadband illumination. The axial length and choroidal thickness did not differ significantly between the test and control eyes or between the illumination conditions (all P > 0.05). Also, the illuminated versus non-illuminated choroidal zone did not show a significant difference (all P > 0.05). Conclusions All stimulation conditions with short- and long-wavelength light and broadband light led to axial elongation and choroidal thinning. Therefore, light chromaticity without defocus induced by LCA is suggested to be insufficient to regulate eye growth. Translational Relevance This study helps in understanding if light chromaticity alone is a sufficient regulator of eye growth.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the topographic characters of inter-individual variations of the macular choroidal thickness (CT). Methods This was a retrospective study. Macular CT data for 900 0.2 × 0.2-mm grids from 410 healthy eyes were collected from swept-source optical coherence tomography. Following the analysis of factors associated with mean CT, the β-coefficients of the included associated factors in each grid were summarized for choroidal thickness changes analysis. Additionally, the coefficient of variance (CoV), coefficient of determination (CoD), and coefficient of variance unexplained (CoVU) for CT were calculated in each individual grid to investigate the inter-individual choroidal variations pattern. Results Sex (β = -17.26, female vs. male), age (β = -1.61, per 1 year), and axial length (β = -18.62, per 1 mm) were associated with mean macular CT. Females had a thinner choroid in all 900 grids (0.5-26.9 µm). As age increased, the CT noticeably decreased (8.74-19.87 µm per 10 years) in the temporal regions. With axial length elongation, the thinning (7.94-24.91 µm per 1 mm) was more evident in subfoveal and nasal regions. Both the CoV (34.69%-58.00%) and CoVU (23.05%-40.78%) were lower in the temporal regions, whereas the CoD (18.41%-39.66%) was higher in the temporal regions. Conclusions Choroidal thinning is more predominant in the subfoveal and nasal regions with axial length elongation, but in the temporal region with aging. The inter-individual variation of CT is higher and less determined by sex, age, or axial length in the nasal regions. Translational Relevance Topographic variation should be considered when interpreting choroidal thickness.

Abstract
Purpose This study aims to examine the short-term peripheral choroidal thickness (PChT) response to signed defocus blur, both with and without native peripheral aberrations. This examination will provide insights into the role of peripheral aberration in detecting signs of defocus. Methods The peripheral retina (temporal 15°) of the right eye was exposed to a localized video stimulus in 11 young adults. An adaptive optics system induced 2D myopic or hyperopic defocus onto the stimulus, with or without correcting native peripheral ocular aberrations (adaptive optics [AO] or NoAO defocus conditions). Choroidal scans were captured using Heidelberg Spectralis OCT at baseline, exposure (10, 20, and 30 minutes), and recovery phases (4, 8, and 15 minutes). Neural network-based automated MATLAB segmentation program measured PChT changes from OCT scans, and statistical analysis evaluated the effects of different optical conditions over time. Results During the exposure phase, NoAO myopic and hyperopic defocus conditions exhibited distinct bidirectional PChT alterations, showing average thickening (10.0 ± 5.3 µm) and thinning (-9.1 ± 5.5 µm), respectively. In contrast, induced AO defocus conditions did not demonstrate a significant change from baseline. PChT recovery to baseline occurred for all conditions. The unexposed fovea did not show any significant ChT change, indicating a localized ChT response to retinal blur. Conclusions We discovered that the PChT response serves as a marker for detecting peripheral retinal myopic and hyperopic defocus blur, especially in the presence of peripheral aberrations. These findings highlight the significant role of peripheral oriented blur in cueing peripheral defocus sign detection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate and compare choroidal thickness (CT) between patients with Meniere's disease (MD) and a control group. METHODS This case-control analytical study was conducted on 37 subjects with MD and 37 healthy subjects. Subfoveal CT (SCT), large choroidal vessel (LCV) layer thickness, and mean subfoveal LCV thickness/mean SCT ratio were measured using enhanced-depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) in the eyes on the MD side (ipsilateral), the contralateral eyes, and the control group. RESULTS A statistically significant difference was observed in the mean SCT values between the ipsilateral and control groups after adjustment for age, sex, and migraine (p = 0.04). Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference between the mean subfoveal LCV thickness values and the mean subfoveal LCV thickness/mean SCT ratio between the ipsilateral and control groups (p = 0.006, and p < 0.001, respectively). Patients with a duration of disease over three years had a greater mean subfoveal LCV thickness/mean SCT ratio (67.35 ± 11.56 and 60.66 ± 11.27, respectively), which was statistically insignificant (p = 0.08). CONCLUSION We found a thicker choroid and Haller layer, and a greater subfoveal LCV thickness/SCT ratio on the MD side compared to the controls. Furthermore, patients with a greater duration of disease had a lower subfoveal LCV thickness/SCT ratio. These findings may reflect the role of the trigeminal vascular system (TVS) and neurovascular pathophysiology in MD patients. Abstract
The integrity of retinal ganglion cells is tightly associated with diabetic macular degeneration that leads to damage and death of retinal ganglion cells, affecting vision. The major clinical treatments for diabetic macular edema are anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs and laser photocoagulation. However, although the macular thickness can be normalized with each of these two therapies used alone, the vision does not improve in many patients. This might result from the incomplete recovery of retinal ganglion cell injury. Therefore, a prospective, non-randomized, controlled clinical trial was designed to investigate the effect of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs combined with laser photocoagulation on the integrity of retinal ganglion cells in patients with diabetic macular edema and its relationship with vision recovery. In this trial, 150 patients with diabetic macular edema will be equally divided into three groups according to therapeutic methods, followed by treatment with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs, laser photocoagulation therapy, and their combination. All patients will be followed up for 12 months. The primary outcome measure is retinal ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness at 12 months after treatment. The secondary outcome measures include retinal ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness before and 1, 3, 6, and 9 months after treatment, retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, best-corrected visual acuity, macular area thickness, and choroidal thickness before and 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after treatment. Safety measure is the incidence of adverse events at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after treatment. The study protocol hopes to validate the better efficacy and safety of the combined treatment in patients with diabetic macula compared with the other two monotherapies alone during the 12-month follow-up period. The trial is designed to focus on clarifying the time-effect relationship between imaging measures related to the integrity of retinal ganglion cells and best-corrected visual acuity. The trial protocol was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the Affiliated Hospital of Beihua University with approval No. (2023)(26) on April 25, 2023, and was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (registration number: ChiCTR2300072478, June 14, 2023, protocol version: 2.0).

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the longitudinal changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in children with different refractive status. Methods A total of 2290 children 3 to 14 years old who attended the first year of kindergarten (G0), first year of primary school (G1), fourth year of primary school (G4), or first year of junior high school (G7) in Guangzhou, China, were recruited and followed up for 2 years. All participants received cycloplegic autorefraction, axial length measurement and SFCT measurement using a CIRRUS HD-OCT device. Children were divided into groups of persistent non-myopia (PNM), persistent myopia (PM), or newly developed myopia (NDM). Children in the PNM and PM groups were further divided into subgroups of stable refraction (absolute mean annual spherical equivalent refraction [SER] change < 0.5 D) and refractive progression (absolute mean annual SER change ≥ 0.5 D). Results The mean ± SD ages for the G1 to G7 cohorts were 3.89 ± 0.30, 6.79 ± 0.47, 9.71 ± 0.34, and 12.54 ± 0.38, years, respectively. SFCT consistently decreased in the NDM group across the G1 to G7 cohorts (all P < 0.001) and exhibited variability across different age cohorts in the PNM and PM groups. Further subgroup analysis revealed significant thickening of SFCT in the PNM-stable group among the G0, G1, and G7 cohorts (all P < 0.05), whereas it remained stable among all cohorts in the PM-stable group (all P > 0.05). Conversely, SFCT exhibited thinning in the G4 and G7 cohorts in the PM-progressive group (both P < 0.01) and for the entire cohort of children in the PNM-progressive group (P = 0.012). Conclusions SFCT increased in nonmyopic children with stable refraction, remained stable in myopic children maintained stable refraction, and decreased in those with refractive progression, whether they were myopic or not.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the characteristic choroidal changes in patients with diabetic retinopathy and identify factors affecting choroidal thickness (CTh), choroidal vascular index (CVI), and choriocapillaris flow. We retrospectively analyzed 79 eyes of 48 patients with diabetes between August 2021 and February 2022. We collected laboratory data, including HbA1c, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, triglyceride, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. Optical coherence tomography images of the foveal avascular zone, retinal vascular density, choroidal flow, retinal thickness, CTh, and CVI were analyzed. Possible determining factors affecting CTh, CVI, and choriocapillaris flow were analyzed using nonparametric multivariate analysis. LDL (p < 0.001) positively correlated with CTh, whereas CVI (p = 0.007) was negatively correlated with CTh in diabetic patients with diabetes. We also identified a negative correlation between choriocapillaris flow and deep parafoveal retinal vessel density in patients with low-grade diabetic retinopathy (DR), which diminished in those with more advanced DR. Our study provides further information on the changes in choroidal structure and blood flow in patients with diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the short-term effects of cyclopentolate and tropicamide eyedrops on choroidal thickness (ChT) in myopic children using placebo or low-dose atropine eyedrops. METHODS The analysis included 242 myopic individuals (7-19 years) enrolled in two randomised placebo-controlled clinical trials of low-dose atropine eyedrops. Cycloplegia was induced using either one drop of 1% cyclopentolate (n = 161), two drops of 1% cyclopentolate (n = 32) or two drops of 1% tropicamide (n = 49). ChT measurements were taken using swept-source optical coherence tomography before and 30 min after administering the cycloplegic eye drops. A subset of 51 participants underwent test-retest measurements prior to cycloplegia. RESULTS Mean changes in subfoveal ChT after two drops of tropicamide and one and two drops of cyclopentolate were -2.5 μm (p = 0.10), -4.3 μm (p < 0.001) and -9.6 μm (p < 0.001), respectively. Subfoveal ChT changes after one and two drops of cyclopentolate were significantly greater than the test-retest changes (test-retest mean change: -3.1 μm; p < 0.05), while the tropicamide group was not significantly different (p = 0.64). Choroidal thinning post-cyclopentolate was not significantly different between atropine and placebo treatment groups (p > 0.05 for all macular locations). The coefficient of repeatability (CoR) in the tropicamide group (range: 8.2-14.4 μm) was similar to test-retest (range: 7.5-12.2 μm), whereas greater CoR values were observed in the cyclopentolate groups (one drop: range: 10.8-15.3 μm; two drops: range: 12.2-24.6 μm). CONCLUSIONS Cyclopentolate eye drops caused dose-dependent choroidal thinning and increased variation in pre- to post-cycloplegia measurements compared with test-retest variability, whereas tropicamide did not. These findings have practical implications for ChT measurements when cyclopentolate is used, particularly for successive measurements.

Abstract
AIM To explore the usage of choroidal thickness measured by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) to detect myopic macular degeneration (MMD) in high myopic participants. METHODS Participants with bilateral high myopia (≤-6 diopters) were recruited from a subset of the Guangzhou Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center-Brien Holden Vision Institute High Myopia Cohort Study. SS-OCT was performed to determine the choroidal thickness, and myopic maculopathy was graded by the International Meta-Analysis for Pathologic Myopia (META-PM) Classification. Presence of MMD was defined as META-PM category 2 or above. RESULTS A total of 568 right eyes were included for analysis. Eyes with MMD (n=106, 18.7%) were found to have older age, longer axial lengths (AL), higher myopic spherical equivalents (SE), and reduced choroidal thickness in each Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grid sector (P<0.001). The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (AUC) for subfoveal choroidal thickness (0.907) was greater than that of the model, including age, AL, and SE at 0.6249, 0.8208, and 0.8205, respectively. The choroidal thickness of the inner and outer nasal sectors was the most accurate indicator of MMD (AUC of 0.928 and 0.923, respectively). An outer nasal sector choroidal thickness of less than 74 µm demonstrated the highest odds of predicting MMD (OR=33.8). CONCLUSION Choroidal thickness detects the presence of MMD with high agreement, particularly of the inner and outer nasal sectors of the posterior pole, which appears to be a biometric parameter more precise than age, AL, or SE.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to synthesize the variations in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) observed at different follow-up intervals in myopic children undergoing orthokeratology treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Relevant articles were systematically retrieved from databases such as PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. The retrieval period extended from the inception of these databases to November 2023. Means and standard deviations (SD) of baseline and post-treatment SFCT were selected as the results for analysis and calculation. RESULTS A total of eight articles involving 478 eyes fulfilled the inclusion criteria. At 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months intervals, the SFCT demonstrated significant increases by 16.74 μm (95% CI: 8.66, 24.82; p < 0.0001), 13.41 μm (95% CI: 4.36, 22.45; p = 0.004), and 17.57 μm (95% CI: 8.41, 26.73; p = 0.0002), respectively. Besides, children treated with orthokeratology exhibited a notably thicker change of SFCT in comparison with children with single-vision spectacles (SVL) (WMD = 13.50, 95% CI: 11.69, 15.13; p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Myopic children undergoing orthokeratology treatment experience a discernible increase in SFCT at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. Furthermore, compared to children utilizing SVL, those undergoing orthokeratology manifest a more pronounced thickening of SFCT.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine Bruch's membrane (BM) in association with the longitudinal part of the ciliary muscle (LPCM) in the pars plana region. METHODS Using light microscopy, we histomorphometrically assessed BM and the LPCM in the pars plana region. RESULTS The histomorphometric study included 51 eyes (51 patients; mean age: 60.8 ± 15.0 years; axial length: 26.0 ± 3.3 mm; range: 21.0-36.0 mm). The LPCM (total length: 4.60 ± 1.10 mm) ended 1.15 ± 0.56 mm anterior to the ora serrata. Within the pars plana region, the LPCM (length: 2.58 ± 0.98 mm) had direct contact with BM for 1.95 ± 0.99 mm (71.1 ± 18.4% of the BM undersurface), while a capillary layer was interposed between the BM and the LPCM for 0.70 ± 0.40 mm (29.0 ± 18.4%). In the pars plana region free of LPCM close to the ora serrata, the percentage of BM covered by the capillary layer was higher than in the pars plana region containing the LPCM (63.0 ± 42.1% vs. 29.0 ± 18.4%; p < 0.001). At the LPCM end, BM was in direct contact with a collagenous tissue from the LPCM and was focally thickened as compared to BM with an underlying capillary layer (9.5 ± 5.3 μm vs. 4.3 ± 1.2 μm; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The direct contact of BM with the LPCM in the pars plana in association with focal BM thickening at the LPCM end suggests an insertion of LPCM on the BM. Taking into account the biomechanical strength of BM, it may imply a functional unit of the LPCM with BM in the process of accommodation with a secondary movement of the posterior BM and tertiary thickening of the subfoveal choroidal space.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to investigate the changes in retinal and choroidal thickness and vascular density in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS Twenty-nine patients with SLE (29 eyes) and 25 control subjects (25 eyes) were enrolled. SLE activity was assessed using the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI). Retinal thickness (RT), inner retinal thickness (IRT), outer retinal thickness (ORT), choroidal thickness (ChT), retinal superficial vascular density (SVD), retinal deep vascular density (DVD), choriocapillary vascular density (CCVD), foveal avascular zone (FAZ), superficial FAZ (sFAZ), and deep FAZ (dFAZ) were measured using OCTA. The retinal and choroidal thickness and vascular density between the control group and SLE group were compared. The relationships between SLEDAI scores and the retinal and choroidal thickness and vascular density in SLE group were analyzed. RESULTS The SVD was significantly increased, and the DVD and CCVD were significantly decreased in the SLE group compared to the control group (p < .05). The results of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) showed that the area under the curve (AUC) values of SVD, DVD, and CCVD were 0.873, 0.729, and 0.727, indicating a high accuracy in discriminating patients with SLE from controls. Correlation analysis showed that the SLEDAI scores were positively correlated with dFAZ (r = 0.589, p = .001) and FAZ (r = 0.451, p = .018), and negatively correlated with DVD (r = -0.491, p = .009) and CCVD (r = -0.521, p = .005). CONCLUSIONS DVD and CCVD were decreased in the SLE and might be related to the disease activity. SVD, DVD, and CCVD may hold promise in the discovery of biomarkers for diagnosing SLE.

Abstract
AIM To compare the three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and choroidal thickness between fellow eyes of acute primary angle-closure (F-APAC) and chronic primary angle-closure glaucoma (F-CPACG) and the eyes of normal controls. METHODS This study included 37 patients with unilateral APAC, 37 with asymmetric CPACG without prior treatment, and 36 healthy participants. Using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), the macular and peripapillary choroidal thickness and three-dimensional CVI were measured and compared globally and sectorally. Pearson's correlation analysis and multivariate regression models were used to evaluate choroidal thickness or CVI with related factors. RESULTS The mean subfoveal CVIs were 0.35±0.10, 0.33±0.09, and 0.29±0.04, and the mean subfoveal choroidal thickness were 315.62±52.92, 306.22±59.29, and 262.69±45.55 µm in the F-APAC, F-CPACG, and normal groups, respectively. All macular sectors showed significantly higher CVIs and choroidal thickness in the F-APAC and F-CPACG eyes than in the normal eyes (P<0.05), while there were no significant differences between the F-APAC and F-CPACG eyes. In the peripapillary region, the mean overall CVIs were 0.21±0.08, 0.20±0.08, and 0.19±0.05, and the mean overall choroidal thickness were 180.45±54.18, 174.82±50.67, and 176.18±37.94 µm in the F-APAC, F-CPACG, and normal groups, respectively. There were no significant differences between any of the two groups in all peripapillary sectors. Younger age, shorter axial length, and the F-APAC or F-CPACG diagnosis were significantly associated with higher subfoveal CVI and thicker subfoveal choroidal thickness (P<0.05). CONCLUSION The fellow eyes of unilateral APAC or asymmetric CPACG have higher macular CVI and choroidal thickness than those of the normal controls. Neither CVI nor choroidal thickness can distinguish between eyes predisposed to APAC or CPACG. A thicker choroid with a higher vascular volume may play a role in the pathogenesis of primary angle-closure glaucoma.

Abstract
This study focuses on the interocular comparison of choroidal parameters in diabetic patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) with and without diabetic macular edema (DME), as well as in patients with unilateral DME (present in only one eye). The aim of this study was to determine the symmetry in order to obtain better insights into the pathophysiology of diabetic choroidopathy. This retrospective single-center cross-sectional study included 170 eyes from 85 patients (61 with DR and 24 controls), divided into subgroups depending on the presence of DME. The patients underwent fluorescein angiography and spectral domain optical coherence tomography examination, and the analysis included various choroidal parameters: choroidal thickness, volume, and the choroidal vascularity index (CVI). In terms of the choroidal thickness, one eye of a patient with DR, regardless of the presence, absence, or unilaterality of DME, may be treated as representative for that patient. CVI proved symmetrical for controls and patients with DR without DME. However, there was some asymmetry of CVI in patients with bilateral or unilateral DME. There was no straightforward relationship between choroidopathy and DME. Other mechanisms were also involved in the pathogenesis.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the choroidal thickness and the microvascular network changes around the macula in thyroid eye disease (TED) patients at different stages and the relationship of those changes with risk factors, serum antibodies and the severity of TED. METHODS A total of 85 participants were enrolled. All participants underwent ophthalmology and endocrinology examinations. Subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), superficial (s) and deep (d) foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, mean (m) and central (c) superficial vascular density (SVD), deep vascular density (DVD) measurements of the enrolled cases were performed with Topcon swept source optical coherence tomography (OCT)/OCT angiography (OCTA) DRI OCT Triton. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to explore the associations between SFCT, FAZ area, SVD, DVD and the relevant factors of TED. RESULTS Those with active TED patients had higher c-DVD and m-DVD levels (P<0.05), however there is no statistically significant difference in SFCT between active and stable TED patients. Among the serum antibodies, it was observed that s-FAZ and d-FAZ increased, c-SVD and m-SVD decreased in patients with high thyroid stimulating hormone-receptor autoantibodies (TRAB) level, whereas SFCT thickened in patients with high levels of both TRAB and human thyroglobulin (hTG). There was no significant difference in SFCT, FAZ, SVD and DVD measurement at gender, between hyperthyroid and euthyroid patients and among those with or without thyroid papillary carcinoma. CONCLUSION The results show that both disease activation and serum antibodies differentially affect both superficial and deep retinal vascular density. It has also been shown that high serum antibody levels affect choroidal thickness independent of clinical activity.

Abstract
Haemodialysis (HD) is currently the most commonly used method of renal replacement therapy. The process of dialysis involves numerous changes that affect many systems, including the eye. The changes occurring in the course of HD may affect the ocular parameters, such as intraocular pressure, central corneal thickness, retinal thickness, retinal nerve fibre layer thickness, and choroidal thickness (CT). The choroid, being one of the most vascularized tissues, is characterized by the highest ratio of blood flow to tissue volume in the entire body, may be particularly susceptible to changes occurring during HD, and at the same time reflect the microcirculatory status and its response to HD. Patients with end-stage renal disease subjected to dialysis are highly susceptible to systemic microvascular dysfunction. Moreover, it is considered that the process of HD itself contributes to vascular dysfunction. Nowadays, thanks to the development of imaging techniques, the widely available optical coherence tomography (OCT) tests allow for the assessment of CT, while OCT-angiography allows for a quick, non-invasive, and repeatable assessment of the condition of retinal and choroidal microcirculation, which significantly expands our knowledge regarding the reaction of ocular microcirculation due to HD. The assessment of both retinal and choroidal circulation is even more attractive because retinal circulation is autoregulated, while choroidal circulation is mainly controlled by extrinsic autonomic innervation. Thus, assessment of the choroidal response to an HD session may provide the possibility to indirectly evaluate the functions of the autonomic system in patients subjected to HD. At a time when the importance of microcirculation in systemic and renal diseases is becoming increasingly evident, the assessment of ocular microcirculation appears to be a potential biomarker for assessing the condition of systemic microcirculation. In this work, we present a review of the literature on the effect of the HD session on CT and the retinal and choroidal microcirculation.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate seasonal and annual change in physiological eye growth in Norwegian school children. Methods Measurements of ocular biometry, non-cycloplegic spherical equivalent autorefraction (SER), and choroidal thickness (ChT) were obtained for 92 children (44 females) aged 7 to 11 years at four time points over a year (November 2019-November 2020). Seasons (3- and 5-month intervals) were classified as winter (November-January), winter-spring (January-June), and summer-autumn (June-November). Cycloplegic SER was obtained in January and used to group children. The seasonal and annual changes were tested with a linear mixed-effects model (P values were adjusted for multiple comparisons). Results All the children experienced annual ocular growth, irrespective of SER, but less so during the summer-autumn. The baseline SER was lower (P < 0.001), axial length (AL) was longer (P < 0.038), and choroids were thicker in 10- to 11-year-old than 7- to 8-year-old mild hyperopes (P = 0.002). Assuming mild hyperopes (n = 65) experience only physiological eye growth, modeling revealed seasonal and annual increases in AL across sex and age (P < 0.018), with less change during the summer-autumn than winter-spring. The 7- to 8-year-olds had a larger decrease annually and over winter-spring in SER (P ≤ 0.036) and in ChT over winter-spring than the 10- to 11-year-olds (P = 0.006). Conclusions There were significant seasonal and annual changes in AL in children who had physiological eye growth irrespective of age within this cohort. Annual changes in SER and seasonal choroidal thinning were only observed in 7- to 8-year-old children. This indicates continued emmetropization in 7- to 8-year-olds and a transition to maintaining emmetropia in 10- to 11-year-olds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the changes in choroidal thickness and axial length after orthokeratology in adolescents with low-to-moderate myopia and to explore the relationship between choroidal thickness and axial length variation. METHODS Thirty eyes with low-to-moderate myopia were retrospectively studied, and optometric data were collected before and after 6 months of continuous orthokeratology. Axial length and choroidal and foveal thicknesses were measured using optical biometry and enhanced depth imaging-spectral domain optical coherence tomography, respectively. RESULTS Axial length in the low myopia group increased ( P <0.001) after 6 months of orthokeratology, and the variation was greater than that in the moderate myopia group ( P <0.05). The subfoveal choroidal thickness in low and moderate myopia groups increased ( P <0.01), and the variation was greater in the moderate myopia group ( P <0.05). Choroidal thickness in all seven measured spots increased, with the variation of subfovea, nasal 1 mm to fovea, and temporal 1 mm to fovea being statistically significant ( P <0.001, P <0.05, and P <0.05). The change in axial length was negatively associated with subfoveal and average choroidal thicknesses ( P <0.01). CONCLUSION Adolescents with moderate myopia presented better axial length control after 6 months of orthokeratology. The choroidal thickness of low and moderate myopic eyes increased, and the variation was more significant in moderate myopic eyes. The axial length control effects can be associated with an increase in the subfoveal and average choroidal thickness.

Abstract
PURPOSE The role of the choroid in Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) remains unclear. The literature is scarce, with conflicting results and lacks axial length measurements. Therefore, we aimed to analyse the choriocapillaris (CC) vessel density (VD) and choroidal thickness (ChT) in all stages of LHON using swept source (SS) technology and considering the possible influence of axial length on choroidal parameters. METHODS This was a prospective cross-sectional observational study. A total of 119 eyes of 60 patients with molecularly confirmed LHON across all stages and 120 eyes of 60 control participants were included. We obtained the CC VD using optical coherence tomography angiography maps centred on the fovea. ChT was measured from the Bruch's membrane to the choroid-sclera interface in the macular and peripapillary regions. RESULTS The CC VD was not significantly affected in any sector or average, except for a slight change in the superior region of chronic eyes (52.08 ± 1.62% vs. 53.50 ± 2.29%, p = 0.002). ChT demonstrated a trend towards decreased values in asymptomatic eyes and increased values in the symptomatic stages that failed to reach statistical significance in sectors corresponding to the papillomacular bundle except for the macular nasal inner sector of chronic eyes (281.10 ± 67.12 μm vs. 252.08 ± 70.55 μm, p = 0.045). No significant correlations were observed between visual acuity and CC VD or ChT. CONCLUSION The CC VD remained stable across the LHON stages. Choroidal vasculature does not appear to play a role in LHON pathophysiology. Further research is needed on ChT as a potential biomarker of LHON.

Abstract
AIM To determine the choroidal thickness (CT) in young healthy Saudi adults using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) with an automated CT segmentation software. METHODS Fifty-eight young adults (total of 116 eyes), 39 males and 19 females participated in this study between the ages of 18 and 38y (mean 22.65±3.9y). All participants underwent ophthalmic screening examination, including the SD-OCT for measurements of CT in each quadrant egmented into five eccentric regions starting from the foveal region up to 4.5 mm towards the periphery. RESULTS The choroid was thickest in the foveal region (central 1 mm, 300±60 µm) and began to progressively thinner beyond the parafovea (1.5-2.5 mm, 284±67 µm) towards the peripheral region (3.5-4.5 mm from the fovea, 254±83 µm). The superior choroid showed the thickest profile (309±57 µm), while the nasal choroid exhibited the thinnest (229±76 µm). The rate of the thinning with increasing eccentricity was more predominant in the nasal choroid, which thinned from the foveal region (294±58 µm) to the peripheral region (158±55 µm). The superior and inferior choroid did not show a statistically significant thinning with eccentricity (all P>0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the CT between gender, age, and laterality of the eyes (all P>0.05). A significant association of myopia with thinner subfoveal choroid was observed (Pearson's, r=0.37), and regression analysis showed that a 10.3 µm choroidal thinning for each diopter increase of myopia. CONCLUSION CT profile depends on eccentric and the quadrant. The CT profile across the measured area in the young Saudi adult population is comparable to other previous reports. Refractive error is critical for CT evaluation.

Abstract
Background To evaluate changes in macular status and choroidal thickness (CT) following phacoemulsification in patients with mild to moderate nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) using optical coherence tomography. Methods In this prospective study, all of the patients underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification. Retinal superficial capillary plexus vascular density (SCP-VD), macular thickness (MT), and CT were measured pre- and postoperatively. Results Twenty-two eyes of 22 cataract patients with mild to moderate NPDR without diabetic macular edema (DME) and 22 controls were enrolled. BCVA increased in two groups at 3 months postoperatively. At 1 and 3 months postoperatively, SCP-VD in the diabetic retinopathy (DR) group significantly increased; changes in SCP-VD in parafovea were significantly greater in the DR group than in the control group. MT and CT in the DR group significantly increased at all visits postoperatively in the fovea and perifovea. Changes in parafoveal MT were significantly greater in the DR group than in the control group at all visits postoperatively. Changes in CT and MT in the fovea were significantly greater in patients with DR than in the controls 1 and 3 months postoperatively. Conclusion Uncomplicated phacoemulsification resulted in greater increases in SCP-VD, MT and CT in patients with early DR without preoperative DME than in controls.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the performance of an automated choroid segmentation algorithm in optical coherence tomography (OCT) data using a longitudinal kidney donor and recipient cohort. Methods We assessed 22 donors and 23 patients requiring renal transplantation over up to 1 year posttransplant. We measured choroidal thickness (CT) and area and compared our automated CT measurements to manual ones at the same locations. We estimated associations between choroidal measurements and markers of renal function (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR], serum creatinine, and urea) using correlation and linear mixed-effects (LME) modeling. Results There was good agreement between manual and automated CT. Automated measures were more precise because of smaller measurement error over time. External adjudication of major discrepancies was in favor of automated measures. Significant differences were observed in the choroid pre- and posttransplant in both cohorts, and LME modeling revealed significant linear associations observed between choroidal measures and renal function in recipients. Significant associations were mostly stronger with automated CT (eGFR, P < 0.001; creatinine, P = 0.004; urea, P = 0.04) compared to manual CT (eGFR, P = 0.002; creatinine, P = 0.01; urea, P = 0.03). Conclusions Our automated approach has greater precision than human-performed manual measurements, which may explain stronger associations with renal function compared to manual measurements. To improve detection of meaningful associations with clinical endpoints in longitudinal studies of OCT, reducing measurement error should be a priority, and automated measurements help achieve this. Translational Relevance We introduce a novel choroid segmentation algorithm that can replace manual grading for studying the choroid in renal disease and other clinical conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of repeated low-level red-light therapy (RLRLT) on retinal and choroidal blood perfusion in myopic children. METHODS Forty-seven myopic children (mean spherical equivalent refractive error [SE]: -2.31 ± 1.26 D; age range: 8.0-11.0 years) were enrolled and received RLRLT (power 2 mW, wavelength 650 nm) for 3 min twice a day, while 20 myopic children (SE: -2.75 ± 0.84 D; age range: 7.0-10.0 years) were included as a control group. All participants wore single-vision distance glasses. Refractive error, axial length (AL) and other biometric parameters were measured at baseline and during follow-up visits in the first, second and fourth weeks after initiation of treatment. Retinal thickness, subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), total choroidal area (TCA), luminal area (LA), stromal area (SA) and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) were obtained using optical coherence tomography (OCT). The percentage retinal vascular density (VD%) and choriocapillaris flow voids (FV%) were measured using en-face OCT angiography. RESULTS After 4 weeks of treatment, a significant increase in SFCT was observed in the RLRLT group, with an average increase of 14.5 μm (95% confidence interval [CI]: 9.6-19.5 μm), compared with a decrease of -1.7 μm (95% CI: -9.1 to 5.7 μm) in the control group (p < 0.0001). However, no significant changes in retinal thickness or VD% were observed in either group (all p > 0.05). In the OCT images from the RLRLT group, no abnormal retinal morphology related to photodamage was observed. The horizontal scans revealed an increase in TCA, LA and CVI over time (all p < 0.05), while SA and FV% remained unchanged (both p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that RLRLT can enhance choroidal blood perfusion in myopic children, demonstrating a cumulative effect over time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of choroidal thickness and tear vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) as biomarkers of coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS This study was a retrospective observational case-control trial. A total of 637 patients who underwent coronary angiography to assess their coronary artery status were included. The patients were divided into two groups: 200 people in the No CAD group and 437 people in the CAD group. We evaluated the choroidal thickness of the right foveal membrane in all patients through optical coherence tomography angiography examination. We also collected tear samples from patients to measure VEGFA. The ROC curve and its area under the curve (AUC) were used for analysis. RESULTS The central foveal choroid in the No CAD group was significantly thicker than that in the CAD group (289.09 μm ± 38.41; 229.03 μm ± 33.44, P < 0.01). The tear VEGFA in the CAD group was higher than that in the No CAD group (706.15 ng/mL ± 147.42; 419.66 ng/mL ± 105.85, P < 0.01). Spearman analysis showed that the correlation between choroidal thickness and Gensini score was -0.7387 ( P < 0.01). The correlation between tear VEGFA level and Gensini score was 0.8636 ( P < 0.01). Taking choroidal thickness and tear VEGFA as independent variables, we obtained AUC = 0.9647 (95% CI 0.9506-0.9789, P < 0.01) through binary logic regression and ROC curve analysis. CONCLUSION The combination of choroidal thickness and tear VEGFA in patients can serve as a clinical marker of CAD and its severity.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between diopter (D) and choroidal thickness in myopic children by describing the values of choroidal thickness, and explore choroidal thickness as an important indicator for evaluating the progression of myopia. Methods The study included myopic and emmetropic children aged 6-14 years (156 eyes) from the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University. The participants were divided into four groups according to the spherical equivalent refraction (SER): low myopes, moderate myopes, high myopes, and emmetropes. Choroidal thickness was measured in nine areas using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grid layout, which divided the areas into concentric circles of 0 × 0 mm, 3 × 3 mm, and 5 × 5 mm from the Sub Fovea. The images were obtained manually with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography scanner. Results There were significant differences of choroidal thickness in the nine areas of the ETDRS grid for all myopes. The distribution of choroidal thickness in low and moderate myopes were different from that in high myopes. In the horizontal direction, choroidal thickness decreased from the temporal to nasal areas for all myopes. In the vertical direction, the choroidal thickness in the perifovea was smaller than that in the parafovea (SER ≥ -2.75D), and the choroidal thickness in the perifovea was greater than that in the parafovea (SER < -2.75D). When comparing emmetropes with myopes, the closer the choroidal thickness was to the central fovea, the more significant the differences were, while the differences were smaller to the perifovea. Among all children, choroidal thickness was positive to SER and negative to axial length (AL) in all areas. For every 1D increase in myopia, the subfoveal choroidal thickness decreased by 13 μm, and for every 1 mm increase in AL, the subfoveal choroidal thickness decreased by 23 μm. Furthermore, SER and AL showed the strongest correlation with choroidal thickness in the inferior area. Conclusion Optical coherence tomography results revealed choroidal thickness was thinner in myopic children. Choroidal thickness was positive to SER and negative to AL. Therefore, we consider choroidal thickness to be an important indicator for evaluating the myopia progress.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate choroidal thickness (ChT) at the subfoveal and peripheral level after the instillation of 0.5% tropicamide + 10% phenylephrine 9 hydrochloride eye drops by using OCT scans in enhanced depth image (EDI) mode. In total, 53 patients (30 males and 23 females) were involved, and the mean age was 25.62 ± 2.41 (age range: 23-36). The dominant eye was treated with tropicamide + phenylephrine (Visumidriatic Fenil 100 mg/mL + 5 mg/mL, Visufarma) while the nondominant eye was used as the control. An OCT analysis was performed on both eyes before and 30 min after the instillation of a drop of mydriatic in the dominant eye. The ChT was measured by using the OCT software measurement tool (Spectralis; Heidelberg Engineering; Heidelberg, Germany, version 6.0). The results showed a statistically significant ChT decrease (p = 0.009) in the temporal sector after the treatment with tropicamide + phenylephrine. In the subfoveal and nasal sectors, no statistically significant ChT changes were detected (p = 0.94; p = 0.85) following the administration of the mydriatic eye drops. The ChT thinning in the temporal sector following the instillation of the tropicamide + phenylephrine eye drops suggests that in the case of ChT studies, mydriatic administration should be avoided.

Abstract
Purpose This study investigated the association between subretinal fluid (SRF) duration and baseline chorioretinal structure in patients with naïve (first-episode and untreated) central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Methods We divided 59 patients into non-prolonged (<3 months) and prolonged (>3 months) groups based on SRF fluid persistence from the initial visit. The follow-up period varied as the shorter duration was chosen between SRF disappearance time and 3 months from the initial visit. We measured the central retinal thickness (CRT), central choroidal thickness (CCT), SRF height (SRFH), and outer nuclear layer thickness (ONL) using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) at the initial visit and recorded SRF duration. We compared these parameters between the groups, conducted multivariate analysis for SRF duration of more than 3 months, and investigated the correlation among CCT and CRT, SRFH, or ONL, and among SRF duration and CRT, CCT, SRFH, or ONL. Results CCT was significantly thicker in the prolonged than in the non-prolonged group at the initial visit (P = 0.044) and significantly correlated with CRT and SRFH (P = 0.007, r = 0.35 and P = 0.002, r = 0.39). SRF duration significantly correlated with CRT and SRFH (P = 0.009, r = 0.40 and P = 0.003, r = 0.41). The optimal model for SRF duration more than 3 months included age (P = 0.054) and CCT (P = 0.008). Conclusions Thicker baseline CCT can lead to a longer SRF duration in naïve CSC. Translational Relevance This association aids in early detection of cases at a higher risk of prolonged SRF.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the interocular differences of the peripapillary structural and vascular parameters and that of association with axial length (AL) in participants with myopic anisometropia using swept-source optical coherence tomography. Methods This prospective cross-sectional study included 90 eyes of 45 participants. Each participant's eyes were divided into the more and less myopic eye respectively according to spherical equivalent. The β- and γ-parapapillary atrophy (PPA) areas, Bruch's membrane opening distance, border length, and border tissue angle were measured manually. Peripapillary choroidal vascularity index and choroidal thickness (CT) values in superior, nasal, inferior, and temporal were calculated using a custom-built algorithm based on MATLAB. Results The interocular difference in AL and spherical equivalent was 0.62 ± 0.26 mm and -1.50 (-2.13, -1.25) diopters (D), respectively. The interocular difference in spherical equivalent was highly correlated with that of the AL. The β- and γ-PPA areas were significantly greater in more myopic eyes. The mean and inferior peripapillary choroidal vascularity index and all regions of peripapillary CT were significantly lower in the more myopic eyes. The interocular difference in AL was significantly positively correlated with the interocular differences in γ-PPA area and border length and negatively correlated with the interocular differences in temporal choroidal vascularity index and mean, inferior, and temporal peripapillary CT. There was an independent correlation between the interocular differences in AL and the interocular differences in γ-PPA area, inferior, and temporal peripapillary CT. Conclusions Significant differences between both groups were detected in most peripapillary parameters, especially in peripapillary CT. The γ-PPA area, border length, and peripapillary CT were significantly correlated with the elongation of AL. Translational Relevance The current study characterized and analyzed the peripapillary parameters in myopic anisometropia, which helped to monitor myopic progression.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the frequency and associated factors of artifacts in swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) imaging. METHODS This was a population-based cross-sectional study. Individuals aged 35 years or older, residing in the Yuexiu district of Guangzhou, China, were recruited by random cluster sampling. Nearly half of the participants were randomly selected for SS-OCT imaging centered on the optic nerve head. Six types of artifacts in the peripapillary choroidal layer and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) were graded and identified. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the association between the presence of artifacts and clinical characteristics. RESULTS Out of the 616 eligible individuals who underwent SS-OCT imaging, 18.3% and 13.6% of subjects exhibited at least one artifact in peripapillary RNFL (pRNFL) and peripapillary choroidal thickness (pCT) measurements, respectively, with posterior segmentation error and off-center artifact ranked as the most common artifacts. The presence of artifacts was significantly associated with age (odds ratio [OR], 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.06; p = .003), refractive error (OR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.71-0.89; p < .001), and signal strength (OR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.90-0.997; p = .039) in pRNFL thickness measurement. Similarly, the presence of artifacts in pCT measurement was significantly associated with age (OR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.03-1.08; p < .001), and refractive error (OR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.68-0.86; p < .001). CONCLUSION Nearly one-fifth of the eyes were noted with at least one artifact in the population-scale SS-OCT study. Age was a risk factor for the presence of artifacts and should be considered in clinical settings.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of the study is to evaluate choroidal thickness (CT) and the effect of age and gender in healthy Africans using enhanced depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Materials and Methods In 172 eyes of 88 volunteers, the CT in the central subfoveal (CSF) area and at 2.5 mm superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal quadrants was measured. Four eyes were excluded due to poor image quality and image decentration. Simple linear regression was used to measure the effect of age on CT, and statistical analysis was done using IBM SPSS Statistics version 22. Results The were 88 male and 84 female eyes, aged 30-80 years. The mean CT was CSF 265.44 ± 6.2 μm; inferior 256.19 ± 70.6 μm; superior 249.92 ± 76.2 μm; temporal 235.51 ± 70.3 μm; and nasal 199.53 ± 69.8 μm. The choroid was thickest in the CSF > Inferior > Superior > Temporal, and the nasal quadrant was thinnest in all age groups. There was a considerable decrease in the CSF with increasing age (P < 0.001). CT in males and females was similar since the difference in mean CSF CT between the genders was 2.085 μm (P = 0.858). Menopausal females had thinner CSF CT compared to premenopausal females (P < 0.001), but this was due to the aging effect. Conclusion CT decreases significantly with increasing age but shows no gender difference in Africans. A comparison of CT studies from other ethnic nationalities shows some similarity with CT in Africans, suggesting that CT findings from other ethnic groups can be extrapolated to Africans.

Abstract
Objective To compare the macular structure and microcirculation in both eyes of the patients with myopic anisometropia.Methods Optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)was employed to scan the macular areas in both eyes of 44 patients with myopic anisometropia.The patients were assigned into high and low groups based on the refractive diopter,and the parameters such as retinal thickness,choroidal thickness,vascular density,and perfusion density in the macular areas of both eyes were compared between the two groups.Results Other macular areas except the central and external nasal areas and the choroid of the fovea in the high group were thinner than those in the low group(all P<0.05).There was no statistically significant difference in retinal vascular density or perfusion density in different areas between the two groups(all P>0.05).Conclusion In the patients with myopic anisometropia,most areas of the retina in the case of high myopia is thinner than that in the case of low myopia,while there is no difference in retinal vascular density or perfusion density in both eyes.

Abstract
PURPOSE This research aimed to determine the effects of near work on macular choroidal blood flow and thickness in young adults. METHODS A total of 109 participants (19-28 years old) were recruited from Capital Medical University in China. The participants spent 40 min reading a book text at a distance of 33 cm. Swept-source optical coherence tomography/optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCT/OCTA) was performed to measure the changes in choriocapillaris perfusion area (CCPA) and choroidal thickness (ChT) after 40 min of near work. The SS-OCT/OCTA data covered an area of 6 mm × 6 mm, which centered on the fovea. RESULTS The baseline ChT and CCPA before near work were negatively correlated with AL, while positively correlated with the magnitude of spherical equivalent (p < .001). Total CCPA decreased significantly by 6 mm × 6 mm macular area after near work compared to that before near work (24.26 ± 1.96 vs. 24.63 ± 1.61 mm2, p<.001). The macular ChT was lower after 40 min of reading than that before 40 min of reading, but no significant difference was observed (302.25 ± 77.69 vs. 304.92 ± 79.73 μm, p = .078). The extent of choroidal thinning was significantly positively correlated with the magnitude of CCPA reduction (p < .001). The decline in CCPA after near work was significantly positively correlated with axial length (AL; p < .001). CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that near work significantly decreased CCPA. The extent of CCPA reduction after near work was associated with higher severity of myopia and choroidal thinning. The baseline CCPA and ChT decreased gradually with AL.

Abstract
This prospective study aimed to evaluate the impact of Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) V4c implantation on retinal and choroidal morphology in patients with high myopia. A total of 97 eyes from 52 high myopic patients who underwent ICL V4c implantation were followed up for 12 months. Preoperative and postoperative evaluations included comprehensive ophthalmic assessments and enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) to analyze changes in central retinal thickness (CRT), retinal volume (CRV), choroidal thickness (ChT), total choroidal area (TCA), luminal area (LA), and choroidal vascular index (CVI). Repeated measures mixed-effects models were used for comparing pre- and postoperative measurement variables and exploring relationships among age, axial length (AL), spherical equivalent refraction (SER), and postoperative retinal and choroidal changes, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Follow-up assessments were conducted at various time points, with participation rates ranging from 21% to 98%. Baseline characteristics showed a median age of 26.7 years, -10.14 diopters of SER, and an AL of 27.44 mm. Throughout the 12-month follow-up, CRT and 3.0 mm CRV consistently increased compared to the baseline, with statistically significant rises observed at postoperative day 1, week 1, and month 12. Most ChT measurements, including subfoveal ChT, declined over the 12 months, except at postoperative 6 months. Horizontal and vertical TCA and LA values significantly increased throughout the follow-up, except for month 6. After surgery, both horizontal and vertical CVI parameters exhibited an increase compared to the baseline, with some changes reaching statistical significance. Correlation analysis performed by repeated measures mixed-effects models showed that no relationship was found between age, AL, and SER and changes in postoperative retinal parameters and CVI parameters. However, postoperative changes in ChT and choroidal area parameters showed a negative correlation with AL and a positive correlation with SER. Our research demonstrated that ICL V4c implantation resulted in noteworthy alterations in retinal and choroidal morphology over a 1-year follow-up period. Moreover, in patients with high myopia, individuals with longer AL and higher degrees of myopia exhibited more pronounced postoperative changes in the choroid and retina. Further studies with extended follow-up durations are necessary to comprehensively understand the long-term effects of ICL implantation on retinal and choroidal morphology and function.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate retinal thickness (RT), retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), and choroidal thickness (CT) changes in synthetic cannabinoid (SC) users. METHODS This prospective study evaluated the RT, RNFLT, and CT values of 56 SC users and 58 healthy controls. The individuals using SCs were referred to us by our hospital's forensic medicine department. Retinal and choroidal images were obtained using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). Measurements (one subfoveal, three temporals, three nasal) were taken at 500 μm intervals up to 1500 μm using the caliper system. Only the right eye was used for subsequent analysis. RESULTS Mean ages were 27.7 ± 5.7 years in the SC-user group and 25.4 ± 6.7 in the control group. Subfoveal Global RNFLT was in the SCs group 102.3 ± 10.5 μm and 105.6 ± 20.2 μm in the control group (p = 0.271). Subfoveal CT was in the SC group mean of 316.1 ± 100.2 μm and in the control group mean 346.4 ± 81.8 μm (p = 0.065). RT, T500 (283.3 ± 36.7 μm, 296.6 ± 20.5 μm, p = 0.011) and N1500 (355.1 ± 14.3 μm, 349.3 ± 18.1 μm, p = 0.049) were significantly higher in the SC group than in the control group, respectively. CONCLUSION Analysis of OCT findings of individuals who had been using SC for more than one year revealed no statistically significant difference between RNFLT and CT, although N1500 was significantly higher in RT. Further studies in the field of OCT are important to explore the pathology of SC.

Abstract
Purpose The objective of this study was to examine the impact of uncomplicated phacoemulsification on macular choroidal thickness (CT) within the first three postoperative months and to investigate its relationship with postoperative cystoid macular edema (CME) in both glaucomatous and healthy subjects, utilizing swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Methods The non-randomized prospective study involved 82 patients, selected via convenience sampling from the First Department of Ophthalmology, Medical School of Athens, "G. Gennimatas" Hospital, Athens, Greece, between May 2018 and May 2022, undergoing phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. The inclusion criteria encompassed patients aged 50 years or above, with or without glaucoma. Patients with ocular pathologies that could influence macula or CT measurements were excluded. Data collection focused on retinal and CT variables of the macular area, measured using SS-OCT. Baseline measurements were established preoperatively, with follow-up assessments at one week, one month, and three months postoperatively to monitor CT and macular edema onset. Results A total of 82 eyes from 82 patients with a mean age of 79.1±8.3 years were included. The study population was divided into a glaucoma group (n=28 eyes) and a control group (n=54 eyes). Our findings indicate a consistently significant increase in macular CT measurements one month after cataract surgery, observed in both glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous eyes. In the first postoperative week, statistically significant changes in CT were observed only in patients with CME. Subsequently, at one-month interval, both patient groups, those with and without CME, exhibited statistically significant changes in CT across all macular sectors. CME was detected in 10 out of 28 eyes in the glaucoma group and in 16 out of 54 eyes in the control group. When evaluating the impact of postoperative CME on groups of glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous eyes, it was observed that glaucomatous eyes exhibited a significantly larger magnitude of change in subfoveal CT (SFCT) (p=0.03) at one month (relative to baseline) compared to non-glaucomatous eyes. There was also a 31% increase in the odds of developing CME for glaucoma patients; this result was not statistically significant (odds ratio {OR}, 1.31; 95% confidence interval {CI}, 0.50-3.47; p=0.57). Conclusions During the early postoperative period, the study revealed a significant increase in CT at one month after phacoemulsification in both glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous eyes. When CME was present, a significantly more pronounced magnitude of change in SFCT was observed at one month in glaucomatous eyes, as opposed to non-glaucomatous eyes. This observation suggests a possible selective susceptibility of glaucomatous eyes in the early postoperative period that requires further research.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effect of oral isotretinoin therapy on central macular thickness (CMT) thickness and choroidal thickness (CT) using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS CT and CMT thickness of 43 eyes were evaluated at baseline, the third, and sixth month of isotretinoin therapy by spectral-domain OCT. For assessment of CT, OCT measurements were obtained at the fovea with six additional measurements at adjacent locations (at 500-1000 µm temporal to the fovea and 500-1000 µm nasal to the fovea). RESULTS Forty-three eyes from 43 patients with acne vulgaris, including 33 females (76.7%), who had a mean age of 24.81 ± 6.60 years, completed the study. The mean CMT was 231.49 ± 19.52 at the baseline and significantly decreased to 229.0 ± 19.57 (p = 0.02) and 229.28 ± 18.83 after three and six months, respectively (p < 0.03). The change in the macular thicknesses measured at four quadrants and choroidal thicknesses were not statistically significant during the study (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The result of our study demonstrated choroidal thickness change is not significant in patients with acne vulgaris after systemic isotretinoin therapy during six months of follow-up. The decreased CMT amount was 2.2 microns; even if statistically significant, this amount is clinically insignificant.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to assess the ocular dimensions of the anterior and posterior segment, including the anterior scleral thickness (AST) in nanophthalmos compared to control eyes. METHODS A cross-sectional comparative study was carried out in two groups: 46 eyes of 28 patients with nanophthalmos, defined as axial length (AXL) < 20.5 mm, and 60 eyes of 30 controls paired by age and sex. The AST and ocular wall thickness (OWT) were measured by optical coherence tomography in the temporal and nasal quadrants at 1, 2, and 3 mm from the scleral spur. Also, the anterior chamber depth (ACD), white-to-white (WTW), lens thickness (LT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and retinal thickness (RT) were evaluated. RESULTS The mean AXL was 19.3 ± 1.5 mm in the nanophthalmos group and 23.9 ± 1.1 mm in the control group (p < 0.001). The OWT was thicker in all measurement points in nanophthalmos (p < 0.001). There were no differences in the AST measurements between groups, except for the AST1 and the AST3 in the nasal quadrant. ACD was shallower and LT was thicker in nanophthalmos, with WTW being larger in controls (p < 0.001). SFCT and RT were thicker in nanophthalmos compared to healthy individuals (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Significant anatomical differences are found in nanophthalmic eyes. They present a shallower ACD; thicker LT, OWT, choroid, and retina; and smaller WTW diameter-although no relevant differences in the AST were observed.

Abstract
Purpose To explore the etiology and choroidal thickness (ChT) pattern in children with early-onset high myopia (eoHM). Methods Sixty children with eoHM and 20 healthy controls were enrolled in this study between January 2019 and December 2021. All children underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations including swept-source optical coherence tomography. ChT was measured in the subfoveal region and at 1000 μm and 2,500 μm nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior to the fovea. Results Overall, 120 eyes of 60 children with eoHM were examined (mean spherical equivalent, -8.88 ± 3.05 D; mean axial length, 26.07 ± 1.59 mm). Simple high myopia (SHM), familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), and Stickler syndrome (STL) were the most frequent etiologies of eoHM and were included in further ChT analysis. Adjusted the effect of SE, multivariate regression analysis showed that children with SHM had thinnest ChT at N2500 and I2500 among the subgroups (p = 0.039, p = 0.013). FEVR group showed thinner ChT at T2500 (p = 0.023), while STL patients exhibited thin ChT at all locations. Conclusion This study revealed that SHM, STL and FEVR was the most frequent etiology, and showed a distinctive pattern of ChT. Asymmetric nasal ChT thinning is a distinctive biomarker for SHM, asymmetric temporal ChT thinning might serve as a biomarker for FEVR, and symmetric diffuse thinning is more common in STL. These ChT patterns may provide a convenient, fast, and noninvasive strategy to differentiate the potential etiology of eoHM.

Abstract
This study aims to systematise subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) measured using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with different severities of thyroid eye disease (TED) compared with healthy subjects. The PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched for the following terms: ((Graves' ophthalmopathy) OR (thyroid eye disease) OR (Graves' orbitopathy) OR (thyroid-associated orbitopathy)) AND (choroidal thickness) AND ((optical coherence tomography) OR (OCT)). The pool of papers was narrowed down to articles published until 31 January 2023 (26, 26 and 96 papers, respectively). Twenty-five (25) articles were taken into consideration, which were original papers and included the choroidal thickness measurements among TED patients in their results. Finally, eight papers were included in the comparative analysis of the SFCT parameter in TED patients and a group of healthy controls, and seven papers in the comparative analysis of the same parameter between active and inactive TED patients. The mean value of the difference between the TED group and the healthy group was 38.79 μm, with a confidence interval (CI) from 0.09 to 77.49 μm (p = 0.0495). The mean difference between the active TED group and inactive TED group was 38.02 μm, with a CI from 8.62 to 67.42 μm (p = 0.0113). All the results were statistically significant.

Abstract
Aims and Objectives To determine the choroidal thickness (mainly subfoveal) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in amblyopic eyes and to compare it with the choroidal thickness (CT) of healthy fellow eyes. Materials and Methods In this prospective study, 140 eyes of 70 patients (aged 5-40 years) with strabismic and anisometropic amblyopia were examined using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) mode in SD-OCT. The CT was measured directly below the fovea and six other locations: 500 μ, 1000 μ, and 1500 μ from fovea in both nasal and temporal quadrants. Results The mean age of the patients was 22.5 ± 11.2 years. The mean Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) in the amblyopic eyes was 0.87 ± 0.47 logMAR and 0 ± 0.02 logMAR in control eyes. The average subfoveal CT was 341.73 ± 60.39 μm in the amblyopic eyes and 314.77 ± 48.12 μm in the fellow eyes. Subgroup analysis showed that the patients with anisometropic amblyopia had a significantly thicker choroid as compared to the fellow healthy eyes (P = 0.00), whereas in strabismic amblyopic eyes, this difference was not significantly significant (P = 0.064). Conclusion Significant choroidal thickening was observed in subjects with amblyopia, which may contribute to the amblyopia pathogenesis and this could be used as a diagnostic parameter for amblyopia. These changes were more pronounced in patients with anisometropic amblyopia than strabismic amblyopia.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the macula, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), retinal layers, and choroidal thickness (CT) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in patients with alopecia areata (AA). Methods The right eyes of 42 AA patients (17 women, 25 men) and 42 controls (18 women, 24 men) were included in the study. Each subject underwent thorough ophthalmic examination and SD-OCT (Heidelberg Engineering) measurements. Central macular thickness (CMT), RNFL, the average thicknesses of the ganglion cell layer (GCL), inner plexiform layer (IPL), inner nuclear layer (INL), outer plexiform layer (OPL), outer nuclear layer (ONL), retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), inner retinal layers (IRL), photoreceptor layers (PRL) as well as subfoveal, temporal and nasal CT were measured. Results In all sectors, no significant difference was observed between the AA group and the control group with regard to the mean values for CMT and RNFL (p>0.05, for all). There was not a significant difference between the AA group and the control group with regard to the thickness of the GCL, IPL, INL, OPL, ONL, RPE, IRL, and PRL (p>0.05 for all). CT at the subfoveal, temporal, and nasal regions was significantly thicker in the AA group than in the control group (p<0.05 for all). Conclusions Along with T-lymphocyte-mediated hair follicle damage, choroidal melanocyte damage and inflammation can also be observed in AA patients. CT may increase secondary to melanocyte inflammation in AA patients.

Abstract
This scoping review investigates the relationship between subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and cataract surgery. We synthesized existing research to clarify SFCT changes following surgery and identify contributing factors. Our aim was to enhance understanding of the ocular changes associated with cataract surgery. A comprehensive database search identified studies on SFCT changes after uncomplicated cataract surgery, categorized as "SFCT changes after cataract surgery," "Factors influencing SFCT," "Macular thickness changes," and "Long-term changes." Quantitative data and findings were extracted from a total of 13 research articles. Studies on SFCT changes after cataract surgery provided valuable insights for the subject under review. Factors influencing SFCT changes included age, axial length, and cataract surgery. Macular thickness increased at various time points. Long-term SFCT changes varied among studies. The present research provides valuable insights into SFCT changes after cataract surgery. Factors including age, axial length, and cataract surgery consistently influence SFCT. The clinical relevance of macular thickness changes remains uncertain, and the influence of age, ocular pathologies, and patient populations is highlighted. Long-term changes in SFCT vary, suggesting a need for further research. Standardized measurement techniques and larger cohort studies are recommended to enhance comparability and generalizability. This review enhances understanding of ocular changes associated with cataract surgery and informs future research.

Abstract
A deep learning model called choroidal vascularity index (CVI)-Net is proposed to automatically segment the choroid layer and its vessels in overall optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans. Clinical parameters are then automatically quantified to determine structural and vascular changes in the choroid with the progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) severity. The study includes 65 eyes consisting of 34 with proliferative DR (PDR), 17 with nonproliferative DR (NPDR), and 14 healthy controls from two OCT systems. On a dataset of 396 OCT B-scan images with manually annotated ground truths, overall Dice coefficients of 96.6 ± 1.5 and 89.1 ± 3.1 are obtained by CVI-Net for the choroid layer and vessel segmentation, respectively. The mean CVI values among the normal, NPDR, and PDR groups are consistent with reported outcomes. Statistical results indicate that CVI shows a significant negative correlation with DR severity level, and this correlation is independent of changes in other physiological parameters.

Abstract
PURPOSE The axial elongation in myopia is associated with some structural and functional retinal changes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a contact lens (CL) intended for myopia control on the choroidal thickness (ChT) and the retinal electrical response. METHODS Ten myopic eyes (10 subjects, 18-35 years of age) with spherical equivalents from -0.75 to -6.00 diopters (D) were enrolled. The ChT at different eccentricities (3 mm temporal, 1.5 mm temporal, sub-foveal ChT, 1.5 mm nasal, and 3 mm nasal), the photopic 3.0 b-wave of ffERG and the PERG were recorded and compared with two material-matched contact lenses following 30 min of wear: a single-vision CL (SV) and a radial power gradient CL with +1.50 D addition (PG). RESULTS Compared with the SV, the PG increased the ChT at all eccentricities, with statistically significant differences at 3.0 mm temporal (10.30 ± 11.51 µm, p = 0.020), in sub-foveal ChT (17.00 ± 20.01 µm, p = 0.025), and at 1.5 mm nasal (10.70 ± 14.50 µm, p = 0.044). The PG decreased significantly the SV amplitude of the ffERG photopic b-wave (11.80 (30.55) µV, p = 0.047), N35-P50 (0.90 (0.96) µV, p = 0.017), and P50-N95 (0.46 (2.50) µV, p = 0.047). The amplitude of the a-wave was negatively correlated with the ChT at 3.0T (r = -0.606, p = 0.038) and 1.5T (r = -0.748, p = 0.013), and the amplitude of the b-wave showed a negative correlation with the ChT at 1.5T (r = -0.693, p = 0.026). CONCLUSIONS The PG increased the ChT in a similar magnitude observed in previous studies. These CLs attenuated the amplitude of the retinal response, possibly due to the combined effect of the induced peripheral defocus high-order aberrations impacting the central retinal image. The decrease in the response of bipolar and ganglion cells suggests a potential retrograde feedback signaling effect from the inner to outer retinal layers observed in previous studies.

Abstract
This review provides an overview of conventional and novel retinal imaging modalities for hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy. HCQ retinopathy is a form of toxic retinopathy resulting from HCQ use for a variety of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Each imaging modality detects a different aspect of HCQ retinopathy and shows a unique complement of structural changes. Conventionally, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), which shows loss or attenuation of the outer retina and/or retinal pigment epithelium-Bruch's membrane complex, and fundus autofluorescence (FAF), which shows parafoveal or pericentral abnormalities, are used to assess HCQ retinopathy. Additionally, several variations of OCT (retinal and choroidal thickness measurements, choroidal vascularity index, widefield OCT, en face imaging, minimum intensity analysis, and artificial intelligence techniques) and FAF techniques (quantitative FAF, near-infrared FAF, fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy, and widefield FAF) have been applied to assess HCQ retinopathy. Other novel retinal imaging techniques that are being studied for early detection of HCQ retinopathy include OCT angiography, multicolour imaging, adaptive optics, and retromode imaging, although further testing is required for validation.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to analyze the relationship between the presence of the cilioretinal artery (CRA) and the incidence, severity and progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and to estimate the influence of the CRA on choroidal and retinal parameters. A total of 287 patients with AMD and 110 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. CRA occurrence was determined using color fundus images. AMD progression was assessed after 3 years. There was no difference in the incidence of CRA between the AMD and control groups (23.34% vs. 24.55%; p = 0.8). Lower-stage AMD was more frequently observed in eyes with the CRA than in eyes without the artery (p = 0.016). The CRA did not influence disease progression (p = 0.79). The CRA did not influence retinal and choroidal thickness and volume parameters or the retinal vessel caliber and functionality in either the AMD or control groups. There was no relationship between CRA presence and CFH Y402H and ARMS2 A69S risk variants. The results did not show a protective effect of the CRA on the incidence and progression of AMD. The CRA may affect the severity of AMD; however, the mechanism of this phenomenon is unclear.
