Abstract
Objectives Bone mass progressively increases to peak during childhood and adolescence, which determines future bone health. Bone formation-resorption processes are assessed using bone markers. However, studies on the impact of obesity on bone turnover markers at this age are limited, and results are inconsistent. The objective of this study was to examine the potential impact of overweight/obesity on bone metabolism. Methods A study was performed to compare parameters of bone metabolism in 45 girls and boys with normal weight (controls) and in a group of 612 girls and boys with overweight/obesity (cases) from the Exergames study (University of Zaragoza). Ages ranged from 8 to 12 years. Results Higher values of phosphorus and IGFBP-3 were observed in children with overweight/obesity, as compared to children with normal weight, (p=0.042) and (p=0.042), respectively. BAP, osteocalcin, magnesium, vitamin D and IGF-I concentrations were lower in the group with overweight/obesity, whereas calcium concentrations were higher in this group, although differences were not statistically significant. A negative correlation was found (r=-0.193) (p=0.049) between BAP and BMI. Conclusions Although differences did not reach statistical significance, BAP and osteocalcin concentrations were lower in children with overweight/obesity. This added to the negative correlation found between BAP and MIC may demonstrate that overweight/obesity may negatively affect bone health already at a young age.

Abstract
Objetivos En la infancia y adolescencia se produce un aumento de masa ósea, hasta alcanzar un pico máximo, determinante para la salud ósea. Los marcadores óseos evalúan los procesos de formación-resorción ósea. Sin embargo, los estudios sobre la influencia de la obesidad en los marcadores de recambio óseo en esta edad, son escasos y los resultados contradictorios. El objetivo de nuestro estudio fue evaluar si el sobrepeso/obesidad influían en el metabolismo óseo. Métodos Se compararon parámetros relacionados con el metabolismo óseo, en 45 niños y niñas normopeso (controles) y en un grupo de 61 niños y niñas con sobrepeso/obesidad (casos), procedentes del estudio Exergames (Universidad de Zaragoza), de edades comprendidas, todos ellos, entre 8 y 12 años. Resultados La concentración de fósforo y la de IGFBP-3 fueron superiores en los niños con sobrepeso/obesidad, respecto a la de los niños normopeso, (p=0,042) y (p=0,042), respectivamente. Las concentraciones de BAP, osteocalcina, magnesio, vitamina D e IGF-I fueron más bajas en el grupo de los niños con sobrepeso/obesidad y la de calcio más elevada, pero las diferencias no fueron estadísticamente significativas. Existe correlación negativa (r=−0,193) (p=0,049) entre BAP e IMC. Conclusiones En los niños con sobrepeso/obesidad pese a que no se llegó a alcanzar significación estadística, la concentración de BAP y osteocalcina fue inferior a la de los niños normopeso, lo cual junto con la correlación negativa de BAP respecto al IMC encontrada, puede indicar que ya en edades tan tempranas el sobrepeso/obesidad puede afectar a la salud ósea.

Abstract
PURPOSE The role of the choroid in Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) remains unclear. The literature is scarce, with conflicting results and lacks axial length measurements. Therefore, we aimed to analyse the choriocapillaris (CC) vessel density (VD) and choroidal thickness (ChT) in all stages of LHON using swept source (SS) technology and considering the possible influence of axial length on choroidal parameters. METHODS This was a prospective cross-sectional observational study. A total of 119 eyes of 60 patients with molecularly confirmed LHON across all stages and 120 eyes of 60 control participants were included. We obtained the CC VD using optical coherence tomography angiography maps centred on the fovea. ChT was measured from the Bruch's membrane to the choroid-sclera interface in the macular and peripapillary regions. RESULTS The CC VD was not significantly affected in any sector or average, except for a slight change in the superior region of chronic eyes (52.08 ± 1.62% vs. 53.50 ± 2.29%, p = 0.002). ChT demonstrated a trend towards decreased values in asymptomatic eyes and increased values in the symptomatic stages that failed to reach statistical significance in sectors corresponding to the papillomacular bundle except for the macular nasal inner sector of chronic eyes (281.10 ± 67.12 μm vs. 252.08 ± 70.55 μm, p = 0.045). No significant correlations were observed between visual acuity and CC VD or ChT. CONCLUSION The CC VD remained stable across the LHON stages. Choroidal vasculature does not appear to play a role in LHON pathophysiology. Further research is needed on ChT as a potential biomarker of LHON.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION the prevalence of osteoporosis among candidates for lung transplantation is high and its pathophysiology is multifactorial. OBJECTIVES to evaluate differences in bone mineral density, risk of fractures and bone remodeling markers in patients with terminal lung disease, at the time they are evaluated for lung transplantation, comparing two types of pathologies. MATERIAL AND METHODS fifty-nine subjects, proposed to receive a lung transplant due to advanced lung disease, were included in this study. They were divided into two groups according to their respiratory pathology: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diffuse interstitial pulmonary disease (ILD). Demographic data were collected and bone densitometry, blood analysis with markers of bone remodeling, spirometry, six-minute walk test (6MWT), echocardiography and cardiac catheterization were performed Results: no differences were found between the groups, regarding their age, sex, BMI or exposure to tobacco. A higher prevalence of osteoporosis and a higher FRAX were observed in the group with COPD. Regarding bone remodeling markers, higher parathyroid hormone (PTH) and higher osteocalcin were found in the COPD group. Vitamin D was lower in COPD patients. CONCLUSIONS two out of three of the patients evaluated for lung transplantation had osteopenia or osteoporosis. The prevalence of osteoporosis and FRAX is higher in COPD patients. Vitamin D supplementation should be considered in certain patients. Differences in bone remodeling markers may be useful for suspected osteoporosis and therapeutic management.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Health services generate large amounts of routine health data (eg, administrative databases, disease registries and electronic health records), which have important secondary uses for research. Increases in the availability and the ability to access and analyse large amounts of data represent a major opportunity for conducting studies on the possible relationships between complex diseases. The objective of this study will be to evaluate the design, methods and reporting of studies conducted using observational routinely collected health data for investigating the link between cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This is the protocol for a meta-research study. We registered the study protocol within the Open Science Framework: https://osf.io/h2qjg. We will evaluate observational studies (eg, cohort and case-control) conducted using routinely collected health data for investigating the associations between cancer and neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease, Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease). The following electronic databases will be searched (from their inception onwards): MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science Core Collection. Screening and selection of articles will be conducted by at least two researchers. Potential discrepancies will be resolved via discussion. Design, methods and reporting characteristics in each article will be extracted using a standardised data extraction form. Information on general, methodological and transparency items will be reported. We will summarise our findings with tables and graphs (eg, bar charts, forest plots). ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Due to the nature of the proposed study, no ethical approval will be required. We plan to publish the full study in an open access peer-reviewed journal and disseminate the findings at scientific conferences and via social media. All data will be deposited in a cross-disciplinary public repository.

Abstract
High myopia and the subsequent degenerative changes of the retina, choroid, and sclera, known as myopic maculopathy (MM), are a serious visual problem in many Asian countries, and are beginning to be so in the south of Europe, especially in the Mediterranean. It is therefore necessary to carry out genetic and environmental studies to determine the possible causes of this disease. This study aims to verify if the genetic factors that have been most related to Asian populations are also associated in two Spanish cohorts. Eight SNPs from six genes (PAX6, SCO2, CCDC102B, BLID, chromosome 15q14, and COL8A1) along with demographic, ophthalmic and environmental factors were analysed in two cohorts from a total of 365 highly myopic subjects and 177 control subjects. The genetic analysis showed that COL8A1 SNP rs13095226 was associated with the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and also seems to play an important role in the increase of axial length. The SNP rs634990 of chromosome 15q14 also showed a significant association with MM, although this was lost after the Bonferroni correction. Additional demographic and environmental factors, namely age, sex, smoking status, and pregnancy history, were also found to be associated with MM and CNV in this population.

Abstract
AIM To correlate corneal variables (determined using the Pentacam) with optic nerve head (ONH) variables determined using the Heidelberg retina tomograph (HRT) in healthy subjects and patients diagnosed with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS Measurements were made in 75 healthy eyes and 73 eyes with POAG and correlations examined through Pearson correlation coefficients between the two sets of variables in the two subject groups. The corneal variables determined were corneal volume (CVol), central corneal thickness (CCT), overall corneal thickness (OvCT), the mean thickness of a circular zone centered at the corneal apex of 1 mm radius (zone I) and the mean thickness of several concentric rings, also centered at the apex until the limbus, each of 1 mm width (zones II to VI respectively). The ONH variables were determined using the HRT. RESULTS The following pairs of variables were correlated in the control group: CCT-disc area (DAr) (-0.48; P<0.0001), Zone I-DAr (-0.503; P<0.0001) and Zone II-DAr (-0.443; P<0.0001); and in the POAG group: CCT-cup-to-disc area ratio (CDRa) (-0.402; P<0.0001), Zone I-CDRa (-0.418; P<0.0001), Zone II-CDRa (-0.405; P=0.006), Zone I-cup shape measure (CSM) (-0.415; P=0.002), Zone II-CSM (-0.405; P=0.001), Zone IV-height variation contour (HVC) (0.378; P=0.002); Zone V-HVC (0.388, P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS In the healthy subjects, significant negative correlation was detected between central and paracentral corneal thickness and optic disc area. In contrast, the POAG patients showed significant negative correlation between central and paracentral corneal thickness and the cup-disc ratio and CSM, and positive correlation between peripheral corneal thickness and HVC.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare intraocular pressure (IOP) between the new non-contact tonometer Corvis ST (CST), the Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) and Icare Pro rebound tonometer (PRO). METHODS A total of 178 eyes of 178 healthy subjects were selected for the study. Measurements of IOP were made in a random order with GAT, PRO and CST. Central corneal thickness (CCT) was determined by ultrasound pachymetry. The mean of three valid measurements of each variable was used in the statistical analysis. The relationship between the tonometers was established using Bland-Altman plots. RESULTS Mean IOP was 15.5 ± 2.8 mmHg for GAT, 15.4 ± 2.8 mmHg for CST, and 14.6 ± 2.3 mmHg for PRO. The mean differences between pairs of tonometers were: GAT-PRO=0.9 ± 1.7 mmHg (P<.001), GAT-CST: 0.1 ± 2.2 (P=.398), and PRO-CST: -0.8 ±-0.7 mmHg, p<0.001. A positive relationship was detected between CCT and the three tonometers: GAT: r=0.325, P<.001; PRO: r = 0.385, P<.001, and CST: r = 0.428; P<.001. CONCLUSIONS The differences found between PRO and GAT were significantly higher than those found between CST and GAT, which showed non-significant differences. The measurements of the three tonometers were affected by the CCT.
