The association between dental and facial symmetry in adolescents

INTRODUCTION

Facial aesthetics have become one of the most important objectives of orthodontic treatment. The correction of dental arches should be performed in accordance with the face. This study explored the association between occlusal and facial asymmetries in adolescents, particularly emphasizing a Class II subdivision.

METHODS

Eighty-one adolescents (43 males, 38 females) with a median age of 15.9 (interquartile range, 15.17-16.33) years were enrolled. Of these patients, 30 had a Class II subdivision (right side, n = 12; left side, n = 18). Three-dimensional facial scans were analyzed using surface- and landmark-based methods. Chin asymmetry was determined using the chin volume asymmetry score. Three-dimensional intraoral scans were analyzed to assess occlusal asymmetry.

RESULTS

The surface matching scores were 59.0% ± 11.3% for the whole face and 39.0% ± 19.2% for the chin. Chin volume was larger on the right side than on the left side in most patients (n = 51, 63%), and it was associated with a dental midline shift to the corresponding subdivision side. A correlation between dental and facial asymmetries was noted. In addition, the dental midline shifted to the left in patients with a Class II subdivision, regardless of the side, and to the right in those with a symmetrical Class II subdivision. However, several patients did not possess asymmetrical occlusal traits sufficient for statistical analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

Dental asymmetry was weak but significantly correlated with facial asymmetry.

Three-dimensional digital evaluation of tooth symmetry and volume in patients with missing and peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to evaluate the 3-dimensional tooth crown symmetry and the crown volumes of maxillary and mandibular teeth in patients with unilateral or bilateral missing or peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors.

METHODS

Six groups were established for the possible clinical variations in patients with unilateral missing or peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors, bilateral presence of these tooth anomalies, and a control group (CG) with normal lateral incisors. The study was conducted on digital dental models of 132 patients. The morphologic symmetry of the antimere teeth was investigated using 3-dimensional deviation analysis. Volumes of contralateral teeth were compared within and among groups for the maxilla and mandible. Furthermore, volumes of teeth were compared in missing and peg-shaped quadrants and quadrants of CG. Intergroup differences were tested using one-way analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis tests, whereas paired t and Wilcoxon tests were used for parametric and nonparametric variables, respectively, for intragroup comparisons.

RESULTS

Significant deviations in symmetry of antimere teeth were not detected (P >0.05). The volumes of mandibular central and lateral incisors in missing or peg-shaped lateral incisor groups were smaller than in the CG (P <0.05). Per quadrant analysis, volumes of the maxillary central incisor and mandibular central incisors, canines, and first molars in quadrants with missing or peg-shaped lateral incisors were smaller than in the control quadrants (P <0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Neither unilateral nor bilateral presence of missing or peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors affected the morphologic symmetry of antimere teeth but did affect tooth volume, especially in the mandibular arch.

Digital analysis of tooth sizes among individuals with different malocclusions: A study using three-dimensional digital dental models

OBJECTIVE

It is aimed to examine the tooth sizes of digital models of patients with different malocclusions with the help of three-dimensional measurement software.

METHODS

Digital models of 252 patients aged between 13 and 25 years of age were included. According to the Angle classification, three different malocclusion groups were allocated such that there were 84 patients in each group, plaster models of patients scanned with the three-dimensional model browser 3Shape R700 3D Scanner (3Shape A/S Copenhagen, Denmark) and transferred to the digital format. 3Shape Ortho Analyzer (3Shape A/S Copenhagen, Denmark) software was used for making the necessary tooth size measurements.

RESULTS

When the measurements were evaluated, it was determined that significant changes occurred between tooth sizes of individuals with different malocclusions. Generally, higher values were observed in mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth dimensions of class II individuals compared to other groups. There was no difference between the groups in the anterior ratio values, but when the overall ratio values were evaluated among the groups, a statistically significant difference was determined. Class II malocclusion group was found to have a significantly lower overall ratio of occurrence.

CONCLUSION

Individuals with different malocclusions differ in tooth size.

Evaluation of facial asymmetry by stereophotogrammetry in individuals with unilateral maxillary impacted canine

PURPOSE

The aim of this study is to compare the symmetry of the facial and dentoalveolar structures of patients with unilateral impacted maxillary canine teeth with a control group of individuals without impacted teeth using three-dimensional face scans.

METHODS

The study included 28 patients (10 females, 18 males) with unilateral impacted maxillary canine teeth and 28 patients (15 females, 13 males) without any impacted maxillary canine between 12 and 25 years of age. The 3dMDface™ (3dMD Inc., Atlanta, GA, USA) imaging system was used to obtain 3D face images. 3dMD Vultus® (3dMD Inc., Atlanta, GA, USA) software was used for the measurements.

RESULTS

According to the study findings, there were differences in linear measurements and volume measurements between the right and left sides of the face in patients with an impacted canine. However, these differences were not statistically significant. In patients with an impacted canine, surface differences between the right and left halves of the face were not found to be statistically different from the control group.

CONCLUSION

There was no difference in the amount of facial asymmetry between patients with unilateral maxillary impacted canine and patients with normal tooth alignment in the control group.

Analysis of tooth anatomy in adults with ideal occlusion: A preliminary study

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this study was to investigate the vestibular anatomy of teeth in samples of adult Italian and Mozambican subjects in ideal occlusion and permanent dentition and identify any anatomic characteristics that may influence bonding in the straight-wire technique.

METHODS

Linear measurements and coordinates of each curve representing the clinical crown height and width of each tooth were acquired from digital models of each subject categorized to 1 of 2 groups: Italian (18 males, 22 females; mean age, 29.6 ± 5.7 years) or Mozambican (14 males, 15 females; mean age, 23.4 ± 5.9 years). All subjects had normal dentition and no previous orthodontic treatment, fillings, or prostheses. Method error and systematic error were calculated according to the Dahlberg formula (S² = ∑ d²/2n) and dependent Student t test (P <0.05), respectively. Tooth symmetry was investigated through a paired-samples t test (P <0.05) and sex difference via an independent-samples t test (P <0.05). After neither asymmetry nor sexual dimorphism was found, all data were pooled, inverting the signs of the X coordinates and then mirroring data. Subsequently, a 2-samples t test (P <0.05) and a multivariate cluster analysis were performed on the mirrored data to compare the 2 groups and to identify any within-group diversity for number of clusters for each tooth. Means of all linear measurements and coordinates (crown height and width) calculated for each cluster were reported and compared using a standard 2-samples t test (P <0.05).

RESULTS

Two clusters were identified for the maxillary second premolars and molars in Italian subjects, whereas in the Mozambican subjects, there were 2 clusters for the maxillary first premolars and lateral incisors and 3 clusters for the maxillary canines and central incisors. The mandibular arch was remarkably homogeneous, with only 1 cluster per tooth in each group. In the mandibular arch, statistical differences were recorded between ethnic groups in crown height at the central incisors and second molars and in crown width in the sector from the second premolar to the second molar.

CONCLUSIONS

There were considerable differences both between and within racial groups in crown height, crown width, and numbers of clusters, which should be taken into account during bonding. Although single-bracket placement guides specific for ethnicity may be feasible for the mandibular arch, the significant diversity in number of clusters in the maxillary arch indicates that more accurate bracket placement guides that take into account such heterogeneity are required.

Three-dimensional evaluations of the digital casts of morphologic maxillary teeth symmetry in patients with unilateral palatally displaced canines

INTRODUCTION

The goal of this study was to compare the size and morphologic symmetry of the maxillary teeth in subjects with and without unilateral palatally displaced canines (PDCs).

METHODS

Plaster casts of 38 subjects (mean age 14.75 ± 0.95 y) with unilateral PDCs were selected (study group [SG]) and compared with casts from an age- and sex-matched control group (CG). Then dental casts of both groups were scanned into 3-dimensional (3D) models. Tooth sizes (mesiodistal [MD] and buccolingual [BL] widths and volumes) for SG and CG were measured. Afterward, 3D deviation analysis was carried out with the use of Geomagic Control X software. All of the data were normally distributed according to parametric tests.

RESULTS

All of the maxillary tooth diameters were smaller in SG than in CG. Statistically significant differences (P ≤ 0.001) were obtained when comparing the widths and volumes of the PDC quadrant and the unaffected quadrant of the same patient. Morphologic tooth symmetry by surface-to-surface matching for SG (PDC side vs non-PDC side) and CG (right vs left quadrant) demonstrated significant (P ≤ 0.001) but small differences, except for the lateral upper incisors (71.27%).

CONCLUSIONS

Unlike control subjects, PDC patients showed high mismatching of lateral incisor crowns of ∼30%.
