Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify phenolic compounds in walnut leaves from northern Iraq and evaluate their ability to act as antibacterial and antioxidant agents. Phenolic compounds were determined by reversed-phase HPLC. Antibacterial activity was tested against various bacteria. Antioxidant properties were evaluated by various assays, including reducing power and DPPH radical scavenging activity. The HPLC profiles of walnut leaf fractions revealed quercetin, hydroquinone, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, and caffeic acid in three fractions. The inhibitory activity of DPPH was determined as 47.66, 32.41, and 51.90 μg/mL for fractions I, II, and III, respectively. For ferric reducing power activity, fraction II > fraction III > fraction I and the FRAP activity was observed as 64.43, 73.19, and 68.18 μg/mL for fractions I, II, and III, respectively. All extracted fractions had antibacterial properties against all bacterial strains tested. Observations showed that fraction I was able to produce similar zones of inhibition as streptomycin in most cases. These results suggest that the fractions of this plant extract are plausible natural antioxidants that could be used as prime candidates for the synthesis of antioxidant drugs that can be used for the treatment of many oxidative stress-related diseases.

Abstract
The study aimed to prepare inclusion complexes of 1,3-diphenylurea (DPU) with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-βCD) using a three-dimensional ground mixture (3DGM). Their physicochemical properties, intermolecular interactions, solubilities, and plant growth-promoting activities were investigated on broccoli sprouts. Phase-solubility diagrams indicated the stability constant (Ks) and complexation efficiency (CE) of βCD/DPU were found to be K1/1 = 250 M-1, CE = 2.48× 10-3. The Ks and CEs of HP-βCD/DPU were found to be K1/1 = 427 M-1, CE = 3.93 × 10-3 and K2/1 = 196 M-1, CE = 1.93 × 10-3 respectively. The powder X-ray diffraction results of 3DGM (βCD/DPU = 2/1, HP-βCD/DPU = 2/1) showed that the diffraction peaks originating from the DPU and βCD disappeared, indicating a halo pattern. Differential scanning calorimetry results showed an endothermic peak at 244 °C derived from the melting point of DPU, but the endothermic peak disappeared in the 3DGM (βCD/DPU = 2/1, HP-βCD/DPU = 2/1). Near-infrared absorption spectra showed peak shifts in 3DGM (βCD/DPU and HP-βCD/DPU) at the -CH and -NH groups of DPU and the -OH groups of βCDs and free water. In the dissolution test (after 5 min), the concentration of intact DPU was 0.083 μg/mL. However, the dissolution concentrations of DPU in the 3DGM (βCD/DPU = 1/1), 3DGM (βCD/DPU = 2/1), 3DGM (HP-βCD/DPU = 1/1), and 3DGM (HP-βCD/DPU = 2/1) were 3.27, 3.64, 5.70, and 7.03 μg/mL, respectively, indicating higher solubility than that of the intact DPU. Further, 1H-1H NOESY NMR spectroscopic measurements showed cross-peaks between H-A (7.32 ppm) and H-B (7.12 ppm) of DPU and H-6 (3.79 ppm) in the βCD cavity of the 3DGM (βCD/DPU = 2/1). A cross-peak was also observed among DPU H-A (7.32 ppm), H-B (7.11 ppm), and H-6 (3.78 ppm) in the βCD cavity. The results of the broccoli sprout cultivation experiment showed that 3DGM (βCD/DPU = 1/1), 3DGM (βCD/DPU = 2/1), 3DGM (HP-βCD/DPU = 1/1), and 3DGM (HP-βCD/DPU = 2/1) increased the stem thickness compared with that of the control group (DPU). These results indicated that the βCD/DPU and HP-βCD/DPU inclusion complexes were formed by the three-dimensional mixing and milling method, which enhanced the solubility and plant growth-promoting effects.

Abstract
The aim of the present research was to obtain a supramolecular complex between a strong antioxidant compound previously reported by our group, in order to extend its antioxidant activity. The formation of the inclusion complex of a catechol hydrazinyl-thiazole derivative (CHT) and β-cyclodextrin in aqueous solution has been investigated using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), spectroscopic and theoretical methods. The stoichiometry of this inclusion complex was established to be equimolar (1:1) and its equilibrium constant was determined. An estimation of the thermodynamic parameters of the inclusion complex showed that it is an enthalpy and entropy-driven process. Our observations also show that hydrophobic interactions are the key interactions that prevail in the complex. 1H NMR spectroscopic method was employed to study the inclusion process in an aqueous solution. Job plots derived from the 1H NMR spectral data demonstrated 1:1 stoichiometry of the inclusion complex in a liquid state. A 2D NMR spectrum suggests the orientation of the aromatic ring of CHT inside the β-CD cavity. The antiradical activity of the complex was evaluated and compared with free CHT, indicating a delayed activity compared with free CHT. To obtain additional qualitative and visual insight into the particularity of CHT and β-CD interaction, molecular docking calculations have been performed.

Abstract
The proven anti-neurodegenerative properties of caffeic acid in vivo are limited due to its poor solubility, which limits bioavailability. Therefore, caffeic acid delivery systems have been developed to improve caffeic acid solubility. Solid dispersions of caffeic acid and magnesium aluminometasilicate (Neusilin US2-Neu) were prepared using the ball milling and freeze-drying techniques. The solid dispersions of caffeic acid:Neu obtained by ball milling in a 1:1 mass ratio turned out to be the most effective. The identity of the studied system in comparison to the physical mixture was confirmed using the X-Ray Powder Diffractionand Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. For caffeic acid with improved solubility, screening tests were carried out to assess its anti-neurodegenerative effect. The obtained results on the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, tyrosinase, and antioxidant potential provide evidence for improvement of caffeic acid's anti-neurodegenerative activity. As a result of in silico studies, we estimated which caffeic acid domains were involved in interactions with enzymes showing expression relevant to the neuroprotective activity. Importantly, the confirmed improvement in permeability of the soluble version of caffeic acid through membranes simulating the walls of the gastrointestinal tract and blood-brain barrier further strengthen the credibility of the results of in vivo anti-neurodegenerative screening tests.

Abstract
Caffeic acid is a widely distributed phenolic acid. It is described in the scientific literature that caffeic acid has poor solubility. The aim of this study was to improve the solubility of caffeic acid for better dissolution kinetics when administered orally. During the study, oral capsules of different compositions were modeled. The results of the disintegration test revealed that the excipients affected the disintegration time of the capsules. The excipient hypromellose prolonged the disintegration time and dissolution time of caffeic acid. The dissolution kinetics of caffeic acid from capsules depend on the chosen excipients. P407 was more effective compared to other excipients and positively affected the dissolution kinetics of caffeic acid compared to other excipients. When the capsule contained 25 mg of β-cyclodextrin, 85% of the caffeic acid was released after 60 min. When the capsule contained 25-50 mg poloxamer 407, more than 85.0% of the caffeic acid was released from capsules after 30 min. The research results showed that in order to improve the dissolution kinetics of caffeic acid, one of the important steps is to improve its solubility.

Abstract
In this report, the stoichiometric ratio (R) for the interaction of diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals with the antioxidant was employed as an evaluation index for the DPPH radical scavenging activity of antioxidants. This evaluation index was related only to the stoichiometric relationship of DPPH radicals with the antioxidant and had no relationship with the initial DPPH amount and the sample volume, which could offer a solution to the problem of poor comparability of EC50 values under different conditions. A novel electrochemical micro-titration method was proposed for the determination of the stoichiometric ratio (R) for the interaction of DPPH radicals with the antioxidant. This electrochemical micro-titration model was verified using caffeic acid as the DPPH radical scavenger, with the stoichiometric ratio (R) of DPPH radicals to caffeic acid determined to be in the range of 2.003–2.046. The calculated EC50 values were 0.513, 1.011, and 1.981 × 10–5 mol/L for 2.10, 4.05, and 8.02 × 10–7 moL of added DPPH radicals, respectively. The proposed method showed no differences from the conventional method, but had better precision and reliability, and used a smaller amount of sample.

Abstract
Anti-cancer drugs are mostly limited in their use due to poor physicochemical and biopharmaceutical properties. Their lower solubility is the most common hurdle limiting their use upto their potential. In the recent years, the cyclodextrin (CD) complexation have emerged as existing approach to overcome the problem of poor solubility. CD-based nano-technological approaches are safe, stable and showed well in vivo tolerance and greater payload for encapsulation of hydrophobic drugs for the targeted delivery. They are generally chosen due to their ability to get self-assembled to form liposomes, nanoparticles, micelles and nano-sponges etc. This review paper describes a birds-eye view of the various CD-based nano-technological approaches applied for the delivery of anti-cancer moieties to the desired target such as CD based liposomes, niosomes, niosoponges, micelles, nanoparticles, monoclonal antibody, magnetic nanoparticles, small interfering RNA, nanorods, miscellaneous formulation of anti-cancer drugs containing CD. Moreover, the author also summarizes the various shortcomings of such a system and their way ahead.

Abstract
Sinapic acid (SA) is a poorly water-soluble substance which could result in poor bioavailability. The aim of this study was to determine the “hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD)” solubilization of SA in the presence of the auxiliary substance hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and to evaluate the ternary inclusion complex prepared by microwave technology. Phase-solubility profiles showed that HPβCD exhibited the greatest solubilizing effect on SA in the presence of HPMC. The enhanced rate of SA dissolution was exhibited by a ternary complex. Outcomes of analyses such as “DSC, FTIR, NMR, and SEM” confirmed the embedding of SA into the cavity of the HPβCD and the formation of a ternary inclusion complex. The outcomes of antioxidant activity (ABTS and nitric oxide scavenging activity) demonstrated that SA ternary inclusion complex (TIC) presented strong antioxidant activity, which might be a result of the enhanced solubility of SA in the TIC prepared by microwave technology. Hence, SA-TIC formulation could be a better dosage form which may protect the body from free radical damage and oxidative stress. Microwave technology greatly boosted the interaction of SA with HPβCD and HPMC, and such findings are expected to contribute to raising the solubility of SA, thereby improving the bioavailability of SA.

Abstract
Hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs) are a subclass of phenolic acids presenting caffeic acid (CA), chlorogenic acid (CGA), coumaric acid (COA) isomers, ferulic acid (FA), and rosmarinic acid (RA) as the major representants, being broadly distributed into vegetal species and showing a range of biological potentials. Due to the low oral bioavailability of the HCAs, the development of delivery systems to promote better administration by the oral route is demanding. Among the systems, cyclodextrin (CD)-based delivery systems emerge as an important technology to solve this issue. Regarding these aspects, in this review, CD-based delivery systems containing HCAs are displayed, described, and discussed concerning the degree of interaction and their effects on crucial parameters that affect the oral bioavailability of HCAs.

Abstract
Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a natural antioxidant with neuroprotective properties; however, its preventive and therapeutic use is limited due to its slight solubility and poor permeability. This study aimed to improve RA physicochemical properties by systems formation with cyclodextrins (CDs): hydroxypropyl-α-CD (HP-α-CD), HP-β-CD, and HP-γ-CD, which were prepared by the solvent evaporation (s.e.) method. The interactions between components were determined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The sites of interaction between RA and CDs were suggested as a result of in silico studies focused on assessing the interaction between molecules. The impact of amorphous systems formation on water solubility, dissolution rate, gastrointestinal (GIT) permeability, and biological activity was studied. RA solubility was increased from 5.869 mg/mL to 113.027 mg/mL, 179.840 mg/mL, and 194.354 mg/mL by systems formation with HP-α-CD, HP-β-CD, and HP-γ-CD, respectively. During apparent solubility studies, the systems provided an acceleration of RA dissolution. Poor RA GIT permeability at pH 4.5 and 5.8, determined by parallel artificial membrane permeability assay (PAMPA system), was increased; RA–HP-γ-CD s.e. indicated the greatest improvement (at pH 4.5 from Papp 6.901 × 10−7 cm/s to 1.085 × 10−6 cm/s and at pH 5.8 from 5.019 × 10−7 cm/s to 9.680 × 10−7 cm/s). Antioxidant activity, which was determined by DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, and FRAP methods, was ameliorated by systems; the greatest results were obtained for RA–HP-γ-CD s.e. The inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) was increased from 36.876% for AChE and 13.68% for BChE to a maximum inhibition of the enzyme (plateau), and enabled reaching IC50 values for both enzymes by all systems. CDs are efficient excipients for improving RA physicochemical and biological properties. HP-γ-CD was the greatest one with potential for future food or dietary supplement applications.

Abstract
The present study prepared inclusion complexes of S-allylcysteine (SAC) and cyclodextrin (α, β, γ) by the freeze-drying (FD) method and verified the inclusion behavior of the solid dispersion. Also, the study investigated the effect of SAC/CD complex formation on liver tumor cells. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) measurements confirmed the exothermic titration curve for SAC/αCD, suggesting a molar ratio of SAC/αCD = 1/1, but no exothermic/endothermic reaction was obtained for the SAC/βCD and SAC/γCD system. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) results showed that the characteristic diffraction peaks of SAC and CDs disappeared in FD (SAC/αCD) and FD (SAC/γCD), indicated by a halo pattern. On the other hand, diffraction peaks originating from SAC and βCDs were observed in FD (SAC/βCD). Near-infrared (NIR) absorption spectroscopy results showed that CH and OH groups derived from SAC and OH groups derived from αCD and γCD cavity were shifted, suggesting complex formation due to intermolecular interactions occurring in SAC/αCD and SAC/γCD. Stability test results showed that the stability was maintained with FD (SAC/αCD) over FD (SAC/βCD) and FD (SAC/γCD). In 1H-1H of NOESY NMR measurement, FD (SAC/αCD) was confirmed to have a cross peak at the CH group of the alkene of SAC and the proton (H-3, -5, -6) in the αCD cavity. In FD (SAC/γCD), a cross peak was confirmed at the alkyl group on the carbonyl group side of SAC and the proton (H-3) in the cavity of γCD. From the above, it was suggested that the inclusion mode of SAC is different on FD (SAC/CDs). The results of the hepatocyte proliferation inhibition test using HepG2 cells showed that FD (SAC/βCD) inhibited cell proliferation. On the other hand, FD (SAC/αCD) and FD (SAC/γCD) did not show a significant decrease in the number of viable cells. These results suggest that the difference in the inclusion mode may contribute to the stability and cell proliferation inhibition.

Binding Studies of Caffeic and p-Coumaric Acid with α-Amylase: Multispectroscopic and Computational Approaches Deciphering the Effect on Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). Abstract
Alpha-amylase (α-amylase) is a key player in the management of diabetes and its related complications. This study was intended to have an insight into the binding of caffeic acid and coumaric acid with α-amylase and analyze the effect of these compounds on the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). Fluorescence quenching studies suggested that both the compounds showed an appreciable binding affinity towards α-amylase. The evaluation of thermodynamic parameters (ΔH and ΔS) suggested that the α-amylase-caffeic/coumaric acid complex formation is driven by van der Waals force and hydrogen bonding, and thus complexation process is seemingly specific. Moreover, glycation and oxidation studies were also performed to explore the multitarget to manage diabetes complications. Caffeic and coumaric acid both inhibited fructosamine content and AGE fluorescence, suggesting their role in the inhibition of early and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). However, the glycation inhibitory potential of caffeic acid was more in comparison to p-coumaric acid. This high antiglycative potential can be attributed to its additional –OH group and high antioxidant activity. There was a significant recovery of 84.5% in free thiol groups in the presence of caffeic acid, while coumaric attenuated the slow recovery of 29.4% of thiol groups. In vitro studies were further entrenched by in silico studies. Molecular docking studies revealed that caffeic acid formed six hydrogen bonds (Trp 59, Gln 63, Arg 195, Arg 195, Asp 197 and Asp 197) while coumaric acid formed four H-bonds with Trp 59, Gln 63, Arg 195 and Asp 300. Our studies highlighted the role of hydrogen bonding, and the ligands such as caffeic or coumaric acid could be exploited to design antidiabetic drugs.

Abstract
To overcome the issue of multidrug resistant (MDR) microbes, the exploration of ways to improve the antimicrobial efficiency of existing antibiotics is one of the promising approaches. In search of synthons with higher efficiency, in current investigations, cocrystal and amorphous salt of levofloxacin hemihydrate (LEV) were developed with phthalimide (PTH) and caffeic acid (CFA). New materials were characterized with the help of FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Shifting, attenuation, appearance/disappearance and broadening of bands were observed in the FT-IR and Raman spectra of the materials as evidence of the required product. The PXRD diffraction pattern observed for LEV-PTH indicated cocrystal while halo diffractogram of LEV-CFA revealed amorphous nature. DSC/TG analysis confirmed the hydrated nature of the cocrystal/salt. The dissolution rate and antimicrobial activity against selected strains, K.pneumonia, E. coli and S. typhi of parent drug and the new material were compared. The zone of inhibition (ZI) observed for 5 µg LEV-PTH was 30.4 + 0.36 (K. pneumonia), 26.33 + 0.35 (E. coli) and 30.03 + 0.25 mm (S. typhi) while LEV-CFA salt (5 µg) against the same strains inhibited 33.96 ± 0.25, 31.66 ± 0.35 and 27.93 ± 0.40 mm, respectively. These novel formulations enhance the dissolution rate as well as antibacterial efficiency and are expected to be potent against MDR bacterial strains.

Abstract
Rifampicin (RFP) solutions, intended to reduce incidence of prosthetic graft infection, were prepared as three-dimensional ground mixtures (3DGMs) using β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and γ-cyclodextrin (γCD) and characterized for their spectroscopic properties and solubility. Phase solubility diagrams revealed that 3DGMs (RFP/βCD and RFP/γCD) produced a complex at 1:1 molar ratio. Pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance experiments indicated that the diffusion coefficients for RFP/βCD and RFP/γCD were similar to the respective diffusion coefficients for βCD and γCD. Rotating-frame Overhauser effect spectroscopy NMR spectra revealed the existence of a new exchanger peak for RFP/γCD, suggesting an intermolecular interaction different from that of RFP/βCD. Differential scanning calorimetry confirmed the presence of endothermic peak at 191 °C indicating the manifestation of RFP in the inclusion complex. Interestingly, molecular interactions from the complexes, RFP/βCD and RFP/γCD, revealed different patterns of inclusion in the 3DGMs. In RFP/βCD, nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy NMR spectra indicated cross peaks for the protons of the methyl group of RFP and the protons (H-5 and H-6) in the βCD cavity. The methyl group of RFP interacted with the narrow rim of βCD. With RFP/γCD, cross peaks were due to the protons of the methyl group of RFP and the protons of the cavity of γCD suggesting multiple inclusion patterns. The observed multiple cross peaks affirm the inclusion of RFP into the CD cavity which enhanced its solubility by 1.6-2.0-fold when prepared as 3DGMs as RFP/βCD and RFP/γCD, respectively.

CA’s mechanism of action involves preventing reactive oxygen species formation, diminishing the angiogenesis of cancer cells, enhancing the tumor cells’ DNA oxidation, and repressing MMP-2 and MMP-9. CA and its derivatives have been reported to exhibit anti-carcinogenic properties against many cancer types. CA has indicated low intestinal absorption, low oral bioavailability in rats, and pitiable permeability across Caco-2 cells. In the present review, we have illustrated CA’s therapeutic potential, pharmacokinetics, and characteristics. The pharmacological effects of CA, the emphasis on in vitro and in vivo studies, and the existing challenges and prospects of CA for cancer treatment and prevention are discussed in this review.

Abstract
Red clover is the subject of numerous studies because of its antioxidant properties, the positive influence of isoflavones on the health, and its potential use in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. The right excipients, such as cyclodextrins, can increase the profile of valuable phenolic compounds in extraction media to obtain rich in antioxidants, extracts that can be used in nutraceuticals production. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the total phenolic content, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of red clover aerial parts, aqueous and ethanolic extracts prepared using traditional and cyclodextrins-assisted methods. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was established using ABTS, DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS-post column methods. It was determined that cyclodextrins significantly increased total phenolic content (compared with control)—using β-cyclodextrin 20.29% (in aqueous samples); γ-cyclodextrin 22.26% (in ethanolic samples). All the samples prepared with excipients demonstrated a strong relationship between total phenolic content and DPPH assay. Study showed that for extraction with water, the highest amounts of phenolic compounds, flavonoids and antioxidant activity will be achieved with β-cyclodextrin, but extractions with ethanol will give the best results with γ-cyclodextrin. Therefore, cyclodextrins are a great and safe tool for obtaining rich, red clover flower extracts that are high in antioxidant activity, which can be used in the pharmaceutical industry for nutraceuticals production.

Abstract
Chlorogenic, ferulic, vanillic, and caffeic acids are phenolic acids found in natural drugs. They possess the biological activities of scavenging free radicals and inhibiting thrombus formation. Phenolic acids can inhibit the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein, as well as have anti-inflammatory effects. This paper reports for the first time a capillary electrophoresis-chemiluminescence (CE-CL) method for the simultaneous determination of the four phenolic acids found in traditional and proprietary Chinese medicine, including Lycium chinense Miller, Shuanghuanglian oral liquid, and Taraxacum mongolicum granules. Capillary electrophoretic separation was performed on a self-assembled CE-CL device with an uncoated fused-silica capillary (66 cm effective length, 50 μm i.d.), and the background electrolyte was composed of 3.0 × 10-5 M Ag(iii) (pH = 12.01), 3.0 mM luminol (pH = 9.20), and 10 mM sodium tetraborate solution. The injection time was 12 s (under gravity) and the separation voltage was 22 kV. The combination of solid-phase extraction (SPE) and CE-CL improves the sensitivity. Under optimal conditions, calibration graphs displayed a linear range between 0.625 and 20.0, 1.000 and 30.0, 0.150 and 1.50, and 0.045 and 1.00 μg mL-1 for chlorogenic, ferulic, vanillic, and caffeic acid, respectively. The detection limit ranged from 0.014 to 0.300 μg mL-1. The practicality of using the proposed method to determine the four target analytes in traditional Chinese medicine was also validated, in which recoveries ranged from 90.9% to 119.8%. Taken together, these results indicate that the developed method is sensitive and reliable. Furthermore, the method was successfully applied to real traditional Chinese medicine samples.

Abstract
Alterations of skin homeostasis are widely diffused in our everyday life both due to accidental injuries, such as wounds and burns, and physiological conditions, such as late-stage diabetes, dermatitis, or psoriasis. These events are locally characterized by an intense inflammatory response, a high generation of harmful free radicals, or an impairment in the immune response regulation, which can profoundly change the skin tissue' repair process, vulnerability, and functionality. Moreover, diabetes diffusion, antibiotic resistance, and abuse of aggressive soaps and disinfectants following the COVID-19 emergency could be causes for the future spreading of skin disorders. In the last years, hydroxycinnamic acids and derivatives have been investigated and applied in several research fields for their anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial activities. First, in this study, we give an overview of these natural molecules' current source and applications. Afterwards, we review their potential role as valid alternatives to the current therapies, supporting the management and rebalancing of skin disorders and diseases at different levels. Also, we will introduce the recent advances in the design of biomaterials loaded with these phenolic compounds, specifically suitable for skin disorders treatments. Lastly, we will suggest future perspectives for introducing hydroxycinnamic acids and derivatives in treating skin disorders.

Abstract
Cocoa bean shell (CBS) is a by-product with aromatic characteristics that can enhance the aroma and bioactivity of herbal infusions. This study was aimed to determine the effect of the addition of cocoa bean shell on the metabolite profile and antioxidant activity of infusions made with Ilex guayusa and Vernonanthura patens and their mixtures. Metabolite profile was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry combined with multivariate analysis. Total polyphenol content and flavonoids were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method and by the flavonoid-AlCl3 complex, respectively. Antioxidant activities were measured by the decolorization assay of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical and the ferric reducing antioxidant power. The results revealed that the addition of CBS increases the content of phenolic acids in the infusions (caffeic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, and pyrocatechol). Nonetheless, the antioxidant activity of the infusions decreased with the addition of CBS (16.21 to 2.74 TEAC). Carboxylic acids and derivatives, major compounds present in the infusions prepared with V. patens, were the metabolites that showed the highest correlation with the antioxidant activity. This study suggests that the infusions made with CBS present a profile of metabolites different from the infusions of I. guayusa, V. patens, and their mixtures.

Abstract
Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a group of complex compounds generated by nonenzymatic interactions between proteins and reducing sugars or lipids. AGEs accumulate in vivo and activate various signaling pathways closely related to the occurrence of various chronic metabolic diseases. In this paper, we describe the process through which AGEs are formed, the classification of AGEs, and biological effects of AGEs on human health. Most importantly, we review recent progress in natural compound-based AGE formation inhibitors. Major classes of natural inhibitors, including polyphenols, polysaccharides, terpenoids, vitamins and alkaloids, have been described. Their mechanisms of action have been summarized as scavenging free radicals, chelating metal ions, capturing active carbonyl compounds, protecting protein glycation sites, and lowering blood glucose levels. Although these natural compounds have good antiglycation activity, to date, they are not widely used in the clinic, likely because of their low content levels. However, these natural compounds and their molecular frameworks will play a valuable role in inspiring drug discovery.

Abstract
This study evaluated the solubility of piperine (PP) in biorelevant media and the effect of its ground mixtures (GMs) and coprecipitates (CPs) on intestinal contractions when presented in inclusion complexes with α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins (CDs). In the powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, CP (PP/αCD) and CP (PP/γCD) suggest the formation of inclusion complexes. The 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis showed the integrated intensity ratios of CP (PP/αCD) and CP (PP/γCD) protons to be 1/2 and 1/1, the same as the respective molar ratios in the respective GM inclusion complexes. The intestinal contraction test confirmed that the intestinal contraction rate of carbachol (CCh) in the presence of 2.0 × 10-5 M PP was comparable to that in the absence of PP. On the other hand, CP (PP/αCD), GM (PP/αCD = 1/2), and GM (PP/βCD = 1/1) formed inclusion complexes that significantly suppressed the intestinal contractility at PP 1.0 × 10-8 M. No significant differences were observed between CP and GM. The solubility of the PP/αCD inclusion complex was 6-7 times higher than that of PP in the fasted-state-simulated intestinal fluid (FaSSIF, pH 6.5). PP functioned to suppress intestinal contraction by forming an inclusion complex. Based on this result, PP/αCD might be expected to be effective as an antidiarrheal.

Abstract
Caffeic acid (CA) and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) are bioactive molecules with poor solubility. We investigated the interaction between CA/CAPE and micellar casein (MC), and the physico-chemical and antioxidant properties of the complexes. Fluorescence spectroscopy analysis showed that both CA and CAPE formed complexes with MC via hydrophobic interactions. The binding constant was higher for CAPE than for CA at each temperature. The complexes were confirmed by FTIR and XRD. The secondary structure of MC was not affected by CAPE, but its morphology changed. CA/CAPE did not induce the dissociation of casein micelles. CA and CAPE increased and decreased, respectively, the bulk and tapped densities of MC. The complexes had higher thermal stability and DPPH radical scavenging capacity than free MC or CA/CAPE.

Abstract
Caffeic acid (CA), a hydroxycinnamic acid possessing a variety of pharmacological activities, has caused a growing interest for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and associated conditions. This work endeavored to develop a novel formulation of CA-Phospholipon® 90H complex (CA-PC) using a solvent evaporation method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), and powder X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) was carried to confirm the formation of CA-PC. The CA-PC was functionally evaluated in terms of solubility, in vitro and ex vivo drug release, and in vivo bioavailability and efficacy studies. SEM, DSC, FTIR, and XRD studies indicated the physical interaction of CA with Phospholipon® 90H to form a complex. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies described particle size of 168 ± 3.9 nm with a monodisperse distribution (PDI 0.17) and a negative zeta-potential of - 16.6 ± 2.1 mV. The phospholipid complex significantly improved (4.2-fold) the solubility of CA. In vitro and ex vivo dissolution studies of the formulated CA-PC revealed a significantly higher release compared with the pure CA. The pharmacokinetic study of CA-PC in rats demonstrated a significant increase (4.79-fold) in oral bioavailability when compared with pure CA as well. Additionally, a significant improvement in serum lipid profile, serum liver biomarker enzyme levels and, restoration of hepatic tissue architecture to normal, in high-fat diet (HFD) induced hyperlipidemic model was obtained upon CA-PC administration when compared with pure CA. These findings indicated that CA-PC would serve as an effective and promising formulation for CA delivery with improved antihyperlipidemic and hepatoprotective activity.Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Caffeic acid is one of the most important hydroxycinnamic acids found in various foods and plant products. It has multiple beneficial effects in the human body such as antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic. Since overdoses of caffeic acid may have negative effects, the quality and quantity of this acid in foods, pharmaceuticals, food supplements, etc., needs to be accurately determined. The present paper analyzes the most representative scientific papers published mostly in the last 10 years which describe the development and characterization of voltamperometric sensors or biosensors based on carbon nanomaterials and/or enzyme commonly used for detecting caffeic acid and a series of methods which may improve the performance characteristics of such sensors.

Abstract
Ferulic acid derivative 012 (FAD012) is a ferulic acid (FA) derivative. The current study prepared a solid dispersion of FAD012 and γ-cyclodextrin (γCD) and ground it using a three-dimensional ball mill (3DGM) to prepare an inclusion complex. This study also assessed the physicochemical properties such as solubility of that complex. A Job's plot indicated that FAD012 and γCD formed an inclusion complex at a molar ratio of 1:1. Phase solubility diagrams revealed that FAD012 produced a BS diagram. According to PXRD, FAD012 produced a diffraction peak at 2θ = 7.0° and γCD produced a diffraction peak at 2θ = 9.1°. Those two peaks were not produced by the 3DGM, but new peaks (2θ = 7.3 and 16.5°) were evident. DSC patterns revealed an endothermic peak due to the melting of FAD012 at 190 °C, but no endothermic peaks were evident with the 3DGM. NIR spectra of the 3DGM indicated that the methyl group of FAD012 produced a higher peak and that the OH groups of γCD produced a higher peak. 1H-1H ROESY NMR spectra (D2O) revealed cross peaks for protons of the methyl group of FAD012 and a proton (H-3) in the cavity of γCD, so FAD012 presumably interacts with the wide opening of the γCD torus. A solubility test (25 °C) indicated that solubility improved about 5-fold for the 3DGM in comparison to the solubility of FAD012 alone (about 140 μg/mL). Based on these findings, an FAD012/γCD complex was formed by cogrinding, and its solubility improved. These observations are expected to expand the usefulness of cogrinding of FAD012 with γCD using a 3D ball mill.

Abstract
The advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are the compounds produced by non-enzymatic glycation reaction of proteins and sugars, which can induce the generation of free radicals and the expression of inflammatory factors, thereby playing an important role in vascular dysfunction in diabetes. To investigate the effects of caffeic acid (CA) on glycation formed by glucose and protein, various spectroscopic techniques and molecular docking methods were carried out. Furthermore, the protective effects of CA on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) damaged by AGEs were detected. The results indicated that CA inhibited AGEs formation in vitro, decreased the expression of IL-1β, IL-18, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, NLRP3, Caspase-1 and CRP (C-reactive protein) and reduced the ROS in HUVECs exposed to AGEs. Our findings suggested that the supplementation with dietary CA could prevent and delay the AGEs-induced vascular dysfunction in diabetes.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the solubilities and physicochemical properties of solid dispersions of daidzein (DDZ) and genistein (GST) (the major isoflavones in soybeans) in γ-cyclodextrin (γCD). Dispersions were prepared in distilled water using a three-dimensional ball mill (3DGMw). Phase solubility diagrams confirmed that DDZ/γCD and GST/γCD formed AL type inclusion complexes with a molar ratio of 1:1. A new peak due to inclusion complexes was observed in the results of powder X-ray diffraction (3DGMw(DDZ/γCD = 1:1) and 3DGMw(GST/γCD = 1:1)). Dissolution tests using distilled water found that solubilities of 3DGMw(DDZ/γCD = 1:1) and 3DGMw(GST/γCD = 1:1) were approximately 37- and 51-fold higher, respectively, than the solubilities of pure DDZ and GST. These observations are expected to expand the usefulness of cogrinding of DDZ or GST with γCD using a three-dimensional ball mill.

Abstract
Green coffee beans are rich in polyphenol chlorogenic acids (CGAs), which are decomposed to give caffeic acid (CFA) and quinic acid (QNA) upon roasting. CGA, CFA and QNA primarily confer the bitterness, astringency and acidity to the coffee brew. Aiming at the structural and thermodynamic insights into the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) encapsulation of key compounds in coffee (CGA 1, CFA 2, and QNA 3), a systematic, comprehensive study using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT calculation has been undertaken. Scrutinizing the X-ray-derived inclusion structures of 1-3 reveals that the CFA moiety plays a determinant role in complexation, in agreement with the DFT-derived relative thermodynamic stabilities. The guest molecules gain stability through OH⋯O hydrogen bonding with β-CD and are well shielded in the β-CD wall. The three stable β-CD inclusion complexes with coffee key compounds suggest the implications of CDs as encapsulating agents for improving bioactivities and masking bitter taste in foods.

Abstract
The current study prepared solid dispersions of forchlorfenuron (CPPU) and γ-cyclodextrin (γCD) or CPPU and 2-hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin (HPγCD) via cogrinding and coprecipitation to assess their physicochemical properties and their effect on plant growth. According to phase solubility diagrams, both CPPU/γCD and CPPU/HPγCD formed an inclusion complex at a molar ratio of 1/1. According to differential scanning calorimetry and powder X-ray diffraction, a ground mixture (GM) of CPPU and γCD (molar ratio = 1/1), a GM of CPPU and HPγCD (molar ratio = 1/1), and a coprecipitate (CP) of CPPU and γCD (molar ratio = 1/1) formed an inclusion complex. According to 1H-1H nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy NMR spectroscopy of the GMs and CP, the aromatic rings of the CPPU molecule are presumably included in CD from the wider to the narrower rim of its ring. Cultivation of broccoli sprouts with the GMs and CP resulted in no differences in the length of sprouts in comparison to a commercial preparation (Fulmet).
