Life cycle analysis of a large-scale limonene production facility utilizing filamentous N2-fixing cyanobacteria

Towards a sustainable environment and carbon neutrality: Optimal sizing of standalone, green, reliable, and affordable water-power cogeneration systems

Today, the limited sources of freshwater supply are a significant concern. Exploiting alternative sources, especially seawater, has been the focus, but purifying it is energy-intensive. Integrating desalination with renewable energy is a proposed solution, but it comes with high costs and environmental risks during construction. Hence, this study presents a framework to enhance the modeling, optimization, and evaluation of green water-power cogeneration systems to achieve the sustainability goals of cities and societies. An improved division algorithm (DA) determines the optimal component sizes based on criteria like minimal energy demand, reduced environmental and resource damage, low total life cycle cost (TLCC), and high reliability. Optimization considers varying loss of power supply probability (LPSP) levels (0 %, 2 %, 5 %, and 10 %). The environmental assessment utilizes a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach with IMPACT 2002+ and cumulative energy demand (CED) calculations. The study models the green cogeneration systems based on weather conditions, water demand, and power requirements of Al Lulu Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE. The system comprises photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, tidal generators, and backup systems (fuel cells). Results reveal that TLCC ranges from $186,263 to $486,876 for the highest LPSP. The solar-tidal-based configuration offers the lowest TLCC ($186,263) while substituting solar with wind energy increases TLCC by 160 %. The wind-tidal-based configuration has the lowest specific environmental impact (1020 mPt/yr) and cumulative energy demand (39.06 GJ/yr) for the highest LPSP. In contrast, the solar-tidal-wind-based configuration inflicts the most damage, with 62.63 GJ/yr and 1794 mPt/yr for the highest LPSP. The finding indicates that the DA is faster (100 iterations) than the genetic algorithm (1000 iterations), particle swarm optimization (400 iterations), and artificial bee swarm optimization (300 iterations). The study underscores the solar-tidal-based configuration as the optimal choice across multiple criteria, offering a promising solution for freshwater supply and environmental sustainability on Al Lulu Island.

Comparison by Life-Cycle Assessment of Alternative Processes for Carvone and Verbenone Production

Verbenone and carvone are allylic monoterpenoid ketones with many applications in the fine chemicals industry that can be obtained, respectively, from the allylic oxidation of α-pinene and limonene over a silica-supported iron hexadecachlorinated phthalocyanine (FePcCl₁₆-NH₂-SiO₂) catalyst and with t-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as oxidant. As there are no reported analyses of the environmental impacts associated with catalytic transformation of terpenes into value-added products that include the steps associated with synthesis of the catalyst and several options of raw materials in the process, this contribution reports the evaluation of the environmental impacts in the conceptual process to produce verbenone and carvone considering two scenarios (SI-raw-oils and SII-purified-oils). The impact categories were evaluated using ReCiPe and IPCC methods implemented in SimaPro 9.3 software. The environmental impacts in the synthesis of the heterogeneous catalyst FePcCl₁₆-NH₂-SiO₂ showed that the highest burdens in terms of environmental impact come from the use of fossil fuel energy sources and solvents, which primarily affect human health. The most significant environmental impacts associated with carvone and verbenone production are global warming and fine particulate matter formation, with fewer environmental impacts associated with the process that starts directly from turpentine and orange oils (SI-raw-oils) instead of the previously extracted α-pinene and limonene (SII-purified-oils). As TBHP was identified as a hotspot in the production process of verbenone and carvone, it is necessary to choose a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient oxidizing agent for the oxidation of turpentine and orange oils.

Toward More Universal Prediction of Polymer Solution Viscosity for Solvent-Based Recycling

The viscosity of polymer solutions is important for both polymer synthesis and recycling. Polymerization reactions can become hampered by diffusional limitations once a viscosity threshold is reached, and viscous solutions complicate the cleaning steps during the dissolution–precipitation technique. Available experimental data is limited, which is more severe for green solvents, justifying dedicated viscosity data recording and interpretation. In this work, a systematic study is therefore performed on the viscosity of polystyrene solutions, considering different concentrations, temperatures, and conventional and green solvents. The results show that for the shear rate range of 1–1000 s^–1, the solutions with concentrations between 5 and 39 wt % display mainly Newtonian behavior, which is further confirmed by the applicability of the segment-based Eyring-NRTL and Eyring-mNRF models. Moreover, multivariate data analysis successfully predicts the viscosity of polystyrene solutions under different conditions. This approach will facilitate future data recording for other polymer–solvent combinations while minimizing experimental effort.

Integrated Product Recovery Will Boost Industrial Cyanobacterial Processes

Cyanobacteria promise to be an important industrial platform for the production of a variety of biobased products such as fuels, plastics, and isoprenoids. Recent advances in synthetic biology have resulted in various cyanobacterial strain improvements. Nevertheless, these new strains are still hampered by product inhibition, resulting in low volumetric productivities, product concentrations, and yields on light. To circumvent these issues, continuous product recovery will need to be applied, resulting in economically viable industrial processes. Optimal product recovery strategies can be developed by considering biological and separation process constraints as well as photobioreactor design. Integrated product recovery will be indispensable to bring the cyanobacterial cell factory to industrial scale.
