Recent developments in synthesis of attapulgite composite materials for refractory organic wastewater treatment: a review

Attapulgite clay, due to its unique crystalline hydrated magnesium-aluminium silicate composition and layer-chain structure, possesses exceptional adsorption and catalytic properties, which enable it or its composites to be utilized as adsorbents and catalysts for wastewater treatment. But the drawbacks of attapulgite are also very obvious, such as relatively low specific surface area (compared to traditional adsorbents such as activated carbon and activated alumina), easy aggregation, and difficulty in dispersion. In order to fully utilize and improve the performance of attapulgite, researchers have conducted extensive research on its modification, but few specialized works have comprehensively evaluated the synthesis, applications and challenges for attapulgite-based composite materials in refractory organic wastewater treatments. This paper provides a comprehensive review of controllable preparation strategies, characterization methods and mechanisms of attapulgite-based composite materials, as well as the research progress of these materials in refractory organic wastewater treatment. Based on this review, constructive recommendations, such as deep mechanism analysis from molecular level multi-functional attapulgite-based material developments, and using biodegradable materials in attapulgite-based composites, were proposed.

Synthesis of Magnetic Attapulgite Nanoparticles Via a Novel Surface Covalent Reaction Method and its Application in the Magnetic Solid Phase Extraction

In this study, the attapulgite nanoparticle was immobilized on the surface of magnetic nanoparticle Fe3O4 via a novel surface covalent reaction method for the magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) for the first time. The surface covalent reaction method has the advantages of controllable steps, and can make the magnetic attapulgite nanoparticle (MANP) have good homogeneity and high stability. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer, Nitrogen adsorption BET, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were applied to characterize the prepared MANP, confirming that the attapulgite nanoparticle could be effectively immobilized on the surface of magnetic nanoparticle Fe3O4 via covalent reactions. Under optimal conditions of the MSPE experiment based on the MANP, the limits of detection were found to be 10 ng/mL for melamine and 3 ng/mL for cyromazine with a relative standard deviation < 10% by a high-performance liquid chromatography system. Meanwhile, 0.1 mg/mL melamine in milk and 0.1 mg/mL cyromazine in cucumber can also be detected according to our MSPE procedure. More importantly, the MANP still has good magnetism and enrichment efficiency after several decades of use. These results showed that the MANP prepared by our method is a kind of promising material for the MSPE.

In situ carbothermal synthesis of carbonized bacterial cellulose embedded with nano zero-valent iron for removal of Cr(VI)

Carbonized bacterial cellulose embedded with highly dispersed nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), denoted as nZVI@CBC, was prepared through one-step in situ carbothermal treatment of bacterial cellulose adsorbing iron(III) nitrate. The structure characteristics of nZVI@CBC and its performance in removing hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) were investigated. Results showed the formation of nZVI@CBC with a surface area of 409.61 m2/g at 800 °C, with nZVI particles of mean size 28.2 nm well distributed within the fibrous network of CBC. The stability of nZVI was enhanced by its carbon coating, despite some inevitable oxidation of exposed nZVI. Batch experiments demonstrated that nZVI@CBC exhibited superior removal efficiency compared to bare nZVI and CBC. Under optimal conditions, nZVI@CBC exhibited a high Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of up to 372.42 mg/g. Therefore, nZVI@CBC shows promise as an effective adsorbent for remediating Cr(VI) pollution in water.

The synergistic activation of peroxymonosulfate for the degradation of Acid Scarlet GR by palygorskite/MnO2/Fe3O4 nanocomposites

A heterogeneous Fenton-like system comprising palygorskite/MnO₂/Fe₃O₄ (PMM) as a superior, low-cost, and eco-friendly ternary catalyst for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was investigated with regard to its ability to degrade Acid Scarlet GR in an aqueous solution. Under the optimum catalytic oxidation conditions of 1 g L^-1 PMM, 0.7 g L^-1 PMS, and an initial pH value of 5, 200 mg L^-1 Acid Scarlet GR was completely degraded within 300 min. PMM exhibited outstanding magnetic recovery ability and reusability after nine cycles with a degradation efficiency of up to 95.4%. The PMM catalyst had a broad working pH range. Singlet oxygen ¹O₂ was considered to play the principal role in the degradation of Acid Scarlet GR in the PMM/PMS system. The synergistic effect between MnO₂, Fe₃O₄, and PG substantially accelerated the catalytic activity of PMM, and MnO₂ was identified to be the primary active site. These findings indicate that PMM is a nanocatalyst that can efficiently activate PMS for the treatment of dye-containing wastewater.

Fabrication of g-C3N4@Bi2MoO6@AgI floating sponge for photocatalytic inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa under visible light

In this work, a floating photocatalyst was constructed by loading g-C₃N₄@Bi₂MoO₆@AgI (GBA) nanocomposite on a modified polyurethane sponge via a simple dip-coating method and applied for the inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa under visible light. GBA ternary photocatalyst was fabricated successfully and the morphology, structure, chemical state, and optical properties were characterized systematically. The floating catalyst achieved near 100% removal efficiency of algae cells under 6 h visible light irradiation and also could be retrieved and used at least three times repeatedly. The influences of various conditions on photocatalytic performance such as loading content of nanoparticles, algae density, and concentration of natural organic matters were also studied, which revealed that the GBA floating catalyst exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance of algae removal under different conditions. Furthermore, the physiological characteristics of algae cells during the photocatalytic process, including cell morphology, membrane permeability, Zeta potential, photosynthetic system, antioxidant system, and the metabolic activity were investigated. Results confirmed that the algae cells were severely damaged during the photocatalytic inactivation and the normal physiological functions were significantly affected, which resulted in the death of algae cells at last. Finally, a possible photocatalytic inactivation mechanism of algae cells was proposed. In summary, GBA floating catalyst can effectively inactivate Microcystis aeruginosa under visible light, which confirmed the high efficiency of the novel photocatalytic algae removal technology. Meanwhile, the recyclable floating material also makes the practical application in eutrophic waters of the algae removal technology possible.

Preparation and permeation recognition mechanism of Cr(vi) ion-imprinted composite membranes

The Cr(vi) ion-imprinted composite membranes (Cr(vi)-IICMs) were prepared by using the surface imprinting method. The template ion was Cr(vi), the functional monomer was 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP), and the nylon filter membrane (nylon-6) was the support membrane. Non-imprinted composite membranes (NICMs) were prepared under the same conditions as the corresponding Cr(vi)-IICM. The adsorption effect of the imprinted membrane can reach 2.4 times that of the corresponding non-imprinted membrane. Meanwhile, the adsorption quantity of Cr(vi)-IICM was 34.60 μmol·g−1. The physical characteristics of membranes were confirmed by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller and scanning electron microscopy. Inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry was used to analyze their adsorption properties and permeation selectivity. Cr(vi)-IICM and NICM were both mesoporous materials from the structural characterization and performance test results. Their adsorption behavior conformed to the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. The permeation recognition mechanism of Cr(vi)-IICM was the Piletsky’s gate model. The IICM still has excellent permeability selectivity to Cr(vi) in the presence of competitive ions. The results provided a reference for the isolation and enrichment of Cr(vi).

Adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+ by magnetically modified lignite

The study aims to solve the problems of limited capacity and difficult recovery of lignite to adsort Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Pb²⁺ in acid mine wastewater (AMD). Magnetically modified lignite (MML) was prepared by the chemical co-precipitation method. Static beaker experiments and dynamic continuous column experiments were set up to explore the adsorption properties of Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Pb²⁺ by lignite and MML. Lignite and MML before and after the adsorption of heavy metal ions were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). Meanwhile, the adsorption mechanisms of Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Pb²⁺ by lignite and MML were revealed by combining the adsorption isotherm model and the adsorption kinetics model. The results showed that the pH, adsorbent dosage, temperature, initial concentration of heavy metal ions, and contact time had an influence on the adsorption of Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Pb²⁺ by lignite and MML, and the adsorption processes were more in line with the Langmuir model. The adsorption kinetics experiments showed that the adsorption processes were jointly controlled by multiple adsorption stages. The adsorption of heavy metal ions by lignite obeyed the Quasi first-order kinetic model, while the adsorption of MML was chemisorption that obeyed the Quasi second-order kinetic model. The negative ΔG and positive ΔH of Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature reaction, while the negative ΔH of Pb²⁺ indicated the exothermic nature reaction. The dynamic continuous column experiments showed that the average removal rates of Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Pb²⁺ by lignite were 78.00, 76.97 and 78.65%, respectively, and those of heavy metal ions by MML were 82.83, 81.57 and 83.50%, respectively. Compared with lignite, the adsorption effect of MML was better. As shown by SEM, XRD and FTIR tests, Fe₃O₄ was successfully loaded on the surface of lignite during the magnetic modification, which made the surface morphology of lignite coarser. Lignite and MML removed Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Pb²⁺ from AMD in different forms. In addition, the adsorption process of MML is related to the O–H stretching vibration of carboxylic acid ions and the Fe–O stretching vibration of Fe₃O₄ particles.
