“I’m too old to think five years ahead”. Parent carers of adult children with intellectual disabilities in Sweden

The effect of Transition to Adulthood Training Program for mothers of young adults with intellectual disability on family quality of life and perceived stress level: A pilot randomized controlled study

Families cannot easily identify and cope with the changing health problems and needs of children transitioning into adulthood. This pilot randomized controlled study aims to improve the family's quality of life and reduce mothers' perceived stress levels by implementing an educational program (Transition to Adulthood Training Program - TATP). A total of 33 mothers of children with intellectual disabilities were randomly assigned to the groups. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Beach Center Family Quality of Life (BCFQOL), and Perceived Stress Scale. The intervention group showed a significant increase in the BCFQOL mean score rather than the control group (p<.001). There was a significant decrease in the perceived stress scores of the mothers in the intervention group after the TATP training sessions (p<0.05). The TATP intervention not only increased the quality of family life for these mothers but also led to a reduction in their perceived stress levels.

A Photovoice Study: The life experiences of middle-aged adults with intellectual disabilities in Korea

BACKGROUND

As adults with intellectual disabilities approach older adulthood, they face unique physical and psychosocial challenges. This study explored the lived experiences of middle-aged adults with intellectual disabilities living in their community.

METHOD

Six sessions of Photovoice were conducted with a purposeful sample of six middle-aged adults with intellectual disabilities in South Korea. Participants were involved with the theme selection, taking photographs related to the themes, group discussion of photo stories and sharing Photovoice outcomes.

RESULTS

Thematic analysis yielded 11 subthemes under the five major themes selected by the participants: health, free time, time in the centre, family and my future in old age.

CONCLUSIONS

The study findings showed complex issues middle-aged adults with intellectual disabilities may face in later life, including bereavement and healthy lifestyle concerns. It is important to create a space for meaningful social support and social interactions without stigma.

Getting from here to there: future planning as reported by adult siblings of individuals with disabilities

BACKGROUND

Although they will often serve as caregivers for their brothers-sisters with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), adult siblings are rarely included in future planning.

METHOD

This study examined 495 American siblings who completed a web-based questionnaire about themselves, their brother-sister with IDD, parents and whether their families completed 11 future planning activities.

RESULTS

Although virtually all families completed some future planning, on average, families completed slightly over half of the 11 activities (75% completed eight or fewer). Families more frequently identified a successor to current caregivers and engaged in planning discussions with one another and with the brother-sister; least often, families completed a letter of intent or began securing residential placements. Future planning activities comprised three domains: (1) legal activities, (2) residential activities and (3) family discussions about the future. Variables relating to one or more domains included whether the brother-sister lived in or outside of family home; brother-sister independent living abilities; presence of an intellectual disability; parent caregiving ability; and current sibling caregiving and involvement with the brother-sister with IDD.

CONCLUSIONS

Although most families engage in some future planning, performance varies widely within and across future planning domains. Future planning involves different considerations and interventions depending on whether one is considering legal, residential or family discussions.
