Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies suggest a critical role for vitamin D in respiratory diseases, including asthma and allergic rhinitis. However, the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and chronic rhinitis, particularly in middle- and older-aged populations, remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association between vitamin D deficiency and chronic rhinitis in middle- and older-aged adults while controlling for lifestyle and physical status factors. METHODS Data from 12,654 participants aged 40 years and older were analyzed from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010-2012). The prevalence of chronic rhinitis and its association with serum vitamin D levels were assessed using multiple logistic regression models, adjusting for demographic, lifestyle, and physical characteristics. RESULTS The prevalence of chronic rhinitis was 21.1%. Participants with chronic rhinitis had a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (69.9% vs. 65.2%) and lower mean vitamin D levels (17.73 ng/mL vs. 18.19 ng/mL) compared to those without chronic rhinitis. After adjusting for confounding factors, vitamin D deficiency remained significantly associated with an increased likelihood of chronic rhinitis (OR = 1.21, 95% CI, 1.082-1.348, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This study identifies a significant association between vitamin D deficiency and chronic rhinitis in middle- and older-aged adults, suggesting that maintaining adequate vitamin D levels may be important in managing chronic rhinitis.

Abstract
In recent years, the relationship between vitamin D and allergic diseases has received widespread attention. As a fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulating the immune system and may influence the onset and progression of diseases such as atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and asthma. To understand the underlying mechanisms, we have summarized the current research on the association between vitamin D and allergic diseases. We also discuss the impact of vitamin D on the immune system and its role in the course of allergic diseases, particularly focusing on how vitamin D supplementation affects the treatment outcomes of these conditions. We aim to provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for optimizing the management and treatment of allergic diseases by modulating vitamin D levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sufficient vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]) serum levels are associated with decreased asthma symptoms. Our aim was to investigate associations between vitamin D and atopy, asthma, asthma severity, and asthma phenotypes in Brazilian teenagers. METHODS This cross-sectional study involved 942 individuals (11-19 years old) engaged in an asthma cohort. The ISAAC questionnaire was employed to diagnosis asthma and asthma severity. Serum allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) was measured by ImmunoCap and serum 25(OH)D was measured by ELISA. We calculated the correlation between sIgE and 25(OH)D. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis to assess associations of interest. RESULTS We found that 25(OH)D deficiency was positively associated with atopy (OR 1.45, confidence interval [CI] 1.05-2.00) and high levels of this vitamin negatively correlated with sIgE to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (r = -0.11, p = 0.019). The average 25(OH)D serum level was 27.0 ± 9.5 ng/ml; 366 individuals (38.8%) had a sufficient level. There was no association between 25(OH)D and asthma, asthma severity or asthma phenotypes in the population. However, sex was a possible effect modifier of the association between vitamin D and asthma: insufficiency in asthmatic women (86%) was higher than in asthmatic men (42%), and there was an association between insufficient vitamin D levels and greater asthma risk only in women (OR = 3.06, 95% CI 1.16-8.07). CONCLUSION We have shown that vitamin D deficiency was associated with greater risk of atopy in both sexes and vitamin D insufficiency was associated with asthma only in women. There was no association between vitamin D levels and asthma phenotypes or asthma severity.

Abstract
Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic disease that is becoming increasingly common worldwide and has a negative impact on school performance, work performance, and quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of vitamin D on the symptoms of AR in children. Methods: Serum vitamin D levels of children with AR and age-matched healthy controls were compared using the high-pressure liquid chromatography method. The relationship between serum vitamin D levels and symptoms and severity of AR was then examined. Results: The study included 137 patients diagnosed with AR (76 males, 61 females; median age: 11 years). Serum vitamin D levels were lower in the patient group than in the control group (P = 0.001), lower in all aeroallergen groups (mites, pollen, and multiple inhalants) than in the healthy control group (P = 0.001), and lower in both the perennial AR group and the seasonal AR group than in the control group (P = 0.001). Spearman correlation analysis showed that there was no correlation between symptom score and vitamin D level (rs = -0.099; P = 0.25). Conclusions: We found no correlation between serum vitamin D level and symptoms and severity of AR. Serum vitamin D levels were lower in children with AR than in healthy children.

Abstract
Background Maternal supplementation with 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (VD3) has immunologic effects on the developing fetus through multiple pathways. This study was aimed at investigating the effects of VD3 supplementation on immune dysregulation in the offspring during allergic rhinitis. Methods Different doses of VD3 as well as control were given to pregnant female mice. Ovalbumin (OVA) challenge and aluminum hydroxide gel in sterile saline were used to induce allergic rhinitis in offspring mice. Nasal lavage fluids (NLF) were collected, and eosinophils were counted in NLF 24 hours after the OVA challenge. Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg subtype-relevant cytokines, including IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-10, IL-17, TGF-β, and OVA-IgE levels from the blood and NLF of offspring mice, were detected by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The Treg subtype was analyzed by flow cytometry. Treg cells were purified from offspring and were adoptively transferred to OVA-sensitized allogenic offspring mice. The outcomes were assessed in allogenic offspring. Results Our data showed that VD3 supplementation significantly decreased the number of eosinophils, basophils, and lymphocytes in the peripheral blood and NLF. The proportion of CD4+CD25+FoxP3+Tregs had a positive correlation with VD3 in a dose-dependent manner. The levels of serum IgE, IL-4, and IL-17 were decreased while the expressions of IFN-γ, IL-10, and TGF-β were significantly enhanced in VD3 supplementation groups. Adoptive transfer CD4+CD25+FoxP3+Tregs of VD3 supplementation groups promoted Th1 and suppressed Th2 responses in the offspring during allergic rhinitis. Conclusion Our findings indicated that low dose VD3 supply in pregnant mice's diet suppressed Th2 and Th17 responses in allergic rhinitis by elevating the Th1 subtype and the proportion of CD4+CD25+FoxP3+Tregs in offspring. It suggested that low dose VD3 supply may have the potential to act as a new therapeutic strategy for allergic rhinitis.

Abstract
Background Studies on the association between vitamin D levels and allergen sensitization have reported conflicting results. We aimed to evaluate the association between low vitamin D levels and sensitization to 59 aeroallergens in Korean adults. Methods We retrospectively reviewed serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) measurements of participants (n = 57,467) in a healthcare center between May 2003 and June 2020. Serum 25(OH)D levels were categorized as follows: severe deficiency (< 10 ng/mL), deficiency (10 to < 20 ng/mL), insufficiency (20 to < 30 ng/mL), and sufficiency (≥ 30 ng/mL). Among all subjects, 1277 simultaneously underwent the multiple allergen simultaneous test. Multiple linear and logistic regression analyses were used to estimate coefficients and odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association between serum vitamin D deficiency and aeroallergen sensitization after adjustment for potential confounders. Subgroup analyses were conducted for the types of aeroallergen (house dust mites, pollens, animal dander, foods, cockroach, and fungus). Results Vitamin D deficiency, defined as serum 25(OH)D level < 20 ng/mL, was noted in 56.4% of participants. There were significant differences in serum 25(OH)D levels according to sex, age, season, and bone mineral density (all P < 0.001). In multiple linear regression analyses, serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly lower in young subjects (adjusted coefficient [95% CI], 0.188 [0.101, 0.275]) and during winter (− 4.114 [− 6.528, − 1.699]). However, no significant association was observed between serum 25(OH)D levels and allergen sensitization (adjusted coefficients [95% CI], − 0.211 [− 1.989, 1.567], P = 0.816). In multivariate logistic regression analyses, male sex, young age, and winter season were significant risk factors for vitamin D deficiency. However, allergen sensitization showed no significant association with 25(OD)D levels after adjusting for confounders (adjusted OR [95% CI], 1.037 [0.642, 1.674] in insufficiency; 0.910 [0.573, 1.445] in deficiency; 0.869 [0.298, 2.539] in severe deficiency groups, P for trend = 0.334). There were consistent findings across subgroups regarding type of aeroallergen sensitized. Conclusion Vitamin D deficiency was prevalent but was not significantly associated with aeroallergen sensitization in Korean adults. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first large-scale study to evaluate the association between vitamin D deficiency and sensitization to 59 different aeroallergens.

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to assess the serum levels of vitamin D in an Egyptian cohort of children with allergic rhinitis (AR) and to evaluate any correlation of vitamin D status with the disease severity. Patient and methods: One hundred twenty children with AR and 100 healthy children were included in our study. We studied the serum levels of vitamin D 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D in all participants. The associations between vitamin D levels and clinical characteristics of AR were examined. Results: In AR group, the serum levels of calcium, (25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D levels were significantly lower (p < .0001, p < .001, and p < .0001, respectively) in AR children than in controls. Furthermore, the mean 25-OHD3 levels in patients with moderate/severe AR were significantly lower than those with mild AR (p < .001). We found significant negative correlations between mean 25(OH)D levels and total nasal symptom score (r = -.62, p = .002) and total immunoglobulin E levels (r = -.27, p = .013) in AR group. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency is a frequent finding among Egyptian children with AR when compared to the healthy group. A significant inverse association was observed between vitamin D levels and AR disease severity.

Abstract
Introduction Many studies have suggested a link between vitamin D deficiency and the development of other atopic diseases like allergic rhinitis (AR). AR can lead to sleep disturbance, fatigue, depressed mood, and compromised cognitive function, which can impair the quality of life and productivity in many people. Objective We aimed to determine the association between vitamin D levels and AR and the effect of vitamin D on atopy markers. Methods All patients with AR who were diagnosed, treated, and followed up at the King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from January 2012 to January 2020 were included in the study. Our exclusion criteria were as follows: pediatric patients, patients with insufficient follow-up data, patients with no atopy markers, patients with comorbid conditions affecting their serum vitamin D levels, and patients with a history of taking medications that affect serum vitamin D levels. Results Fifty-five adult patients with AR were included in the study. Patients with vitamin D deficiency were more likely to have uncontrolled AR. Regarding the effect of vitamin D deficiency on atopy markers, there was no statistically significant relationship between vitamin D deficiency and serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. However, serum eosinophil levels were significantly higher in patients with vitamin D deficiency. Conclusion Our results showed that vitamin D deficiency is strongly associated with uncontrolled AR; there was a statistically significant relationship between vitamin D deficiency and eosinophil levels, but no significant relationship between vitamin D deficiency and serum IgE was found.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D deficiency plays an essential role in allergic rhinitis(AR), but the role of vitamin D deficiency in perennial allergic rhinitis (pAR) remains unclear. Therefore, our study explored 25(OH)D levels in patients with pAR and healthy individuals in a single center in China for three years. Methods A total of 655 patients with pAR and 682 healthy controls were enrolled in this study from 2015 to 2017. Patients' clinical history and symptoms were recorded. sIgE tests were performed using the allergen detection system (UniCAP), and the ADVIA centaur XP system (SIEMENS) was used to measure serum 25(OH)D levels. Results Serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly different between the pAR group and control group over the three‐year study period(all P < .05). Specifically, 25(OH)D levels were decreased in the pAR groups over three years. Serum25(OH)D deficiency, insufficiency, and sufficiency were noted in 66.9% ~71.9%, 22.5% ~29.4%, and 2.5%~5.6%, respectively, of patients in the pAR group and 53.2%~60.7%, 31.4%~36.6%, and 7.9% ~11.4%, respectively, of participants in the control group. We did not identify significant associations between serum 25(OH)D levels and clinical characteristics of patients with pAR over the three‐year period (all P > .05) after adjusting for sex, age, duration of disease, total nasal symptom score (TNSS), sIgE levels, number of positive allergens, and family history. Conclusion pAR patients exhibited lower serum 25(OH)D levels compared with healthy people with a high prevalence of 25(OH)D deficiency or insufficiency. Abstract
We aimed to clarify the relation between allergic rhinitis and the serum levels of 25-hydroxivitamin D in the adult population. The study group consisted of 86 patients with allergic rhinitis who were diagnosed with the help of history of allergy, positive signs for allergy, blood samples, and positive skin prick tests; while the control group included 43 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers with negative skin prick tests. The demographic data, medical history, findings in the physical examinations, serum levels of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and skin prick test results of the groups were noted. A total of 129 patients fulfilling the necessary criteria were enrolled. The median serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in the study group were significantly lower compared to the control group ( P = .014). In the study group, median serum vitamin D levels were significantly higher in men, compared to women ( P = .03). There was a significant negative correlation between IgE and vitamin D levels in the allergic rhinitis group ( P = .028, r = −0.246). This study showed that patients with allergic rhinitis might be more vulnerable to have lower serum levels of vitamin D. Thus, vitamin D supplementation as an adjunctive therapy may be considered in those patients.

Abstract
Objective: The study aimed to determine vitamin D status and frequency of its determinants related to diet, clothing, lifestyle and exposure to sunlight among young healthy medical students living in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: This cross sectional study included responses gathered on questionnaire from medical students of Karachi Medical &Dental College from 4th of August 2017 till 30th April 2018. All the participants were healthy young adult’s year of age who gave written informed consent to participate in the study. Questions regarding demographics, sun exposure, diet, clothing, living patterns and any symptoms like pain or body aches were recorded. Serum 25 (OH) vitamin D3, calcium and phosphorus levels were measured through laboratory examination. For serum 25OHD, the cutoff values ≤ 20ng /ml, ≥ 21-29ng /ml, and ≥ 30ng/ml were defined as deficiency, insufficiency, and sufficiency respectively. Results: Total number of medical students enrolled in the study was 221.Among total participants 191 (86.43%) were females and 30 (13.57%) were males. Mean ± SD age was almost similar (23.00 ± 2.56 vs. 23.03 ± 2.05). Majority of the females 115 (60.2%) had BMI within normal range, and were predominantly single 164 (85.9%). Vitamin D deficiency was found in 197 (89.14%), insufficiency in 16 (7.24%), and only 8 (3.62%) had sufficient levels. Determinant factors reported by deficient group (n=197); fabric color (dark mix) 87.3%, fabric material (synthetic + mix) 48.7%, full length of sleeves by 45.7%, exposure to sun only on hands and face during outdoors was reported by 64.5%, milk up to 250 cc was consumed by 77.2%, one egg per day in diet was taken by 56.9% and intake of cod liver oil was less common in only 27.4%. Conclusion: Deficiency of vitamin D is common among healthy young adults particularly females which emphasize need to add vitamin D supplements in their routine diet.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vitamin D deficiency has been proposed as a potential contributing factor in patients with allergic diseases. We compared the clinical and immunological effects of vitamin D supplementation to placebo during the pollen season in children with allergic rhinitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-eight children aged 5-12, sensitive to grass pollen, participated in a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Children received either vitamin D 1000 IU daily supplementation or placebo. We studied symptoms/medication score, lung function, exhaled nitric oxide concentration (FENO), methacholine bronchial provocation test and serum level of 25(OH)D, as well as; CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ cells, TLR4, IL-1, IL-6, TNF and the IL-10 and transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) levels in cell culture supernatants. RESULTS Vitamin D therapy was effective in reduction of the symptoms/medication score (p = 0.0371). In vitamin D group an increase in the CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ cells (7.06 vs. 10.5%; p = 0.0013) and serum 25(OH)D concentration (49.6 vs. 96.6 ng/ml; p = 0.0001) and in control group an increase in FENO (15.6 vs. 21 ppb; p = 0.0331) and serum 25(OH)D level were observed (82.9 vs. 100.3 ng/ml; p = 0.0003).We revealed a higher increase from baseline in the percentage of CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ cells in the vitamin D group compared to the control group (p = 0.0058). A significant correlation between CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ cell induction and FENO reduction in the vitamin D group was observed (p = 0.0217). CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D 1000 IU as a supplementary treatment of grass pollen allergy in children with allergic rhinitis during the pollen season significantly reduced the symptoms/medication score. The study revealed an immunological effect of vitamin D.

Abstract
RATIONALE Seasonal nadirs in 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentrations overlap with increased incidence and severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in winter. We hypothesized that, because lower 25(OH)D concentrations might lead to upper airway muscle dysfunction, low 25(OH)D would be associated with higher apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), a measure of OSA severity. OBJECTIVES To determine if lower 25(OH)D concentration is associated with greater prevalence and increased severity of OSA, independent of established OSA risk factors. METHODS Using unconditional logistic regression, we performed a cross-sectional analysis in the Outcomes of Sleep Disorders in Older Men study, which included in-home overnight polysomnography, serum 25(OH)D measurement, and collection of demographic and comorbidity data. The primary outcome was severe sleep apnea, as defined by AHI of 30/h or more. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Among 2,827 community-dwelling, largely white (92.2%), elderly (aged 76.4 ± 5.5 yr [mean±SD]) males, mean 25(OH)D concentration was 28.8 (±8.8) ng/ml. Subjects within the lowest quartile of 25(OH)D (6-23 ng/ml) had greater odds of severe sleep apnea in unadjusted analyses (odds ratio = 1.45; 95% confidence interval = 1.02-2.07) when compared with the highest 25(OH)D quartile (35-84 ng/ml). However, further adjustment for established OSA risk factors strongly attenuated this association (multivariable adjusted odds ratio = 1.05; 95% confidence interval = 0.72-1.52), with body mass index and neck circumference as the main confounders. There was also no evidence of an independent association between lower 25(OH)D levels and increased odds of mild (AHI = 5.0-14.9/h) or moderate (AHI = 15.0-29.9/h) sleep apnea. CONCLUSIONS Among community-dwelling older men, the association between lower 25(OH)D and sleep apnea was largely explained by confounding by larger body mass index and neck circumference.

Abstract
Objective The relationship between vitamin D and allergic rhinitis (AR) remains unclear. The present study investigated their association by examining serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels, blood eosinophils, and the expression of vitamin D receptors (VDR) on nasal mucosa in patients with AR. Methods A total of 32 patients with persistent AR and 25 controls were enrolled in this study. Serum 25(OH)D levels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and eosinophils in the peripheral blood were examined by an automated hematology system, while VDR expression on inferior turbinate mucosa was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Furthermore, the correlation of serum 25(OH)D levels with blood eosinophils in persistent AR was analyzed. Results No significant difference in serum 25(OH)D levels was detected between the AR and control groups (p = 0.371). Interestingly, the serum 25(OH)D levels of the AR group were negatively correlated with blood eosinophil count and its proportion (p = 0.019 and p = 0.010, respectively) even when adjusting confounding factors including age, sex, body mass index, and the season of blood sampling. On the other hand, no significant difference in the expression levels of VDR on nasal mucosa was found between the AR group and the control group (p = 0.231). Conclusion These results suggest that the serum 25(OH)D might be inversely associated with blood eosinophils in patients with persistent AR. However, the relationship between vitamin D and AR still requires further clarification.

Abstract
Recent studies suggest that vitamin D is related to allergic rhinitis (AR). In this review, we first discuss the physiology and metabolism of vitamin D, then we review the function of vitamin D in the immune system, and above all, we highlight the current research regarding the role of vitamin D in AR. Finally, we find that there are both experimental and clinical studies showing that vitamin D is associated with AR, although the results are not consistent and even conflicting. Evidences from those clinical studies show a slightly tendency that serum vitamin D level might be inversely associated with the risk of AR. Meanwhile, it seems that gender and age may influence the relationship between vitamin D and AR. However, because of the heterogeneity in defining AR, differences in study design and so on, all these findings need to be confirmed by further studies. Additional clinical studies as well as experimental research are needed to better understand how vitamin D influences AR.

Abstract
IL-17-producing Th17 cells play an important role in allergic airway diseases, but their local expression and regulation in allergic rhinitis (AR) is not well understood. This study investigated the effects of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-(OH)2D3) on T-bet expression, Th1 cells, Th2 cells, Th17 cells and IL-33-positive epithelial cells in AR. C57BL/6 mice were intranasally sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA), and 1,25-(OH)2D3 was intraperitoneally injected into AR mice. Cytokine levels were measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, phenotypic analysis of Th1, Th2 and Th17 cells in the spleen was completed with flow cytometry, and the CD4+IL-17+ cells in the Nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) and IL-33-positive cells in nasal mucosa was evaluated with immunofluorescence microscopy. AR mice shown significantly increased Th2 and Th17 cell ratio in spleen, IL-17 level in serum, IL-5 and IL-13 levels in NALF but a lower number of IL-33-positive epithelial cells and Th1 response (Th1 and Tbet+Th1 cell ratio in the spleen and serum IFN-γ level) than the control mice.1,25-(OH)2D3 treatment significantly decreased the number of sneezing, nasal rubbing, OVA-sIgE and IL-17 in serum, IL-5 and IL-13 levels in NALF, Th17 cell ratio in the spleen and the histological of nasal mucosal but increased the number of IL-33-positive epithelial cells in AR mice. However, 1,25-(OH)2D3 treatment did not significantly influence IFN-γ level in serum, and Th1, Tbet+Th1 and Th2 cell ratio in spleen. Thus, 1,25-(OH)2D3 may exert anti-allergic effects by suppressing Th17 responses and local production of IL-5 and IL-13 cytokines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to systematically review observational studies investigating the relationship between vitamin D levels and allergic rhinitis (AR). METHODS Studies were selected if they evaluated the relationship between vitamin D levels and AR, and included studies that evaluated other allergic conditions if those studies also contained data on AR. We assessed the incidence and prevalence of AR according to vitamin D levels and compared vitamin D levels in patients with AR to levels in controls. RESULTS Nineteen studies were selected. Of these, only seven focused solely on AR; 10 studies evaluated the other allergic diseases as well as AR; and two studies evaluated asthma primarily, but also included data on patients with AR. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) for the incidence of AR according to vitamin D levels were not statistically significant for either children or adults. Lower vitamin D levels were associated with a higher AR prevalence only in children (pooled OR [95% confidence interval (CI)], 0.75 [0.58, 0.98]). The pooled mean vitamin D level in patients with AR was lower than that of controls only in children (pooled means difference [95% CI], -7.63 [-13.08, -2.18]). CONCLUSIONS Prior vitamin D levels were not related to developing AR, but lower vitamin D levels were associated with a higher AR prevalence only in children. There is insufficient evidence to support vitamin D supplementation for AR prevention. However, physicians should consider evaluating patients for vitamin D deficiency during AR management, especially in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The relationship between vitamin D and allergic diseases such as asthma and atopic dermatitis is shown in several studies. But there is a lack of knowledge about vitamin D status in children with allergic rhinitis (AR). We aimed to investigate serum vitamin D levels of children with AR or nonallergic rhinitis (NAR), to compare with normal subjects and to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D and the severity of AR. METHODS The study included a total of 141 children (76 patients with rhinitis and 65 control subjects), who applied to the Pediatric allergy immunology outpatient. Skin prick tests were performed using the same antigens for all patients. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3) levels were measured. AR was classified according to the ARIA guidelines. RESULTS Mean 25OHD3 levels were 18.07±6.1ng/mL in the AR group, 14.81±4.86 in the NAR, and 24.03±9.43ng/mL in the control group. These differences among groups were statistically significant (p=0.001). Vitamin D status was determined as deficient in 32 (66.7%) patients, insufficient in 14 (29.2%) and normal in 2 (4.2%) of the AR group. These frequencies for NAR and control groups are 25 (89.3%), 3 (10.7%), 0, and 25 (38.5%), 32 (49.2%), 8 (12.3%), respectively. Vitamin D status was found to be different among groups (p=0.001). There were not any association between 25OHD3 levels and allergen sensitivity (p>0.05). The comparison of the mean 25OHD3 levels according to the severity and duration of AR did not detect statistically significant difference among groups (respectively, p=0.384, p=0.23 Denburg J, Fokkens WJ, Togias A5). CONCLUSIONS The mean serum 25OHD3 levels of the children both with AR and NAR were lower than control group. No association between 25OHD3 levels and allergen sensitivities was found in our study. We did not find any relationship between 25OHD3 levels and the severity and duration of allergic rhinitis.

Abstract
Purpose In addition to regulating calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and bone metabolism, vitamin D is known as an immune modulator. Recently, there has been increased worldwide interest in the association between low levels of vitamin D and allergic diseases. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and allergic/vasomotor rhinitis (AR/VR) in children. Methods This study included 164 patients. The sample included 59 patients with AR, 42 patients with VR, and 63 controls. Their ages ranged from 0 to 16 years. We examined the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, Immunoglobulin E, specific IgE, and eosinophil cationic protein; peripheral blood eosinophil count; and the results of a skin prick test. Results Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were 19.0±8.5 ng/mL in the AR group, 25.5±10.9 ng/mL in the VR group, and 26.9±10.7 ng/mL in the control group. After adjustment for body mass index and season at the time of blood sampling, vitamin D levels in the AR group were lower than those of the VR group (P=0.003) and control group (P<0.001). Vitamin D levels were inversely correlated with Immunoglobulin E levels (r=-0.317, P<0.001). AR patients with food allergy or atopic dermatitis did not have lower levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D than AR patients without these diseases. Conclusion This study demonstrates a possible relationship between vitamin D levels and allergic rhinitis in Korean children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Studies about the association between vitamin D and allergic disease and the immune-modulatory function of vitamin D have increased in the recent years. However, not enough studies have been conducted for concrete conclusion about the association vitamin D and allergy. We investigate the association between serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels in Korean adults. METHODS We used data of 1969 subjects from the 2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Total IgE, Dermatophagoides farinae (Df)-specific IgE, and serum 25(OH)D levels were analyzed. Other variables included sex, age, body mass index, smoking history, and economic status. Adjusted regression analysis was used to examine the independent association of 25(OH)D with serum IgE levels. RESULTS When we divided all subjects into four groups according to the serum 25(OH)D level: Q1 (lowest), Q2, Q3, and Q4 (highest), the median TIgE level increased with higher quartiles in the Kruskal-Wallis test (p<0.001). Also, the prevalence of Df sensitization was highest in Q4. Serum vitamin D was positively associated with logarithmic transformed total IgE with base of 10 (LogTIgE) (coefficient (B), 0.011; 95% confidence interval, 0.001-0.021). Furthermore, a positive association between 25(OH)D and LogTIgE was found only in men with Df sensitization, but not in men without Df sensitization and women with/without Df sensitization. However, the mean serum 25(OH)D level was significantly lower in participants who were clinically diagnosed with asthma or atopic dermatitis than participants without a history of asthma or atopic dermatitis, respectively. CONCLUSION Serum 25(OH)D levels were positively associated with total IgE levels. Furthermore, the association between serum 25(OH)D and total IgE levels could vary depending on sex or allergic sensitization. But, the mean serum 25(OH)D level was lower in participants with asthma or atopic dermatitis history than participants without history of asthma or atopic dermatitis. Prospective further studies will be required to verify this discrepancy.

Abstract
AIM Vitamin D may be involved in allergy development, but there is conflicting evidence. We investigated if dietary intake of vitamin D and levels of 25OHD in serum differed between allergic and nonallergic adolescents and if serum 25OHD correlated with dietary intake of vitamin D or season of blood sampling. METHODS Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD) levels were analysed in 13-year-old subjects with atopic eczema (n = 55), respiratory allergy (n = 55) or no allergy (n = 55). Intake of fat-containing foods was assessed by food-frequency questionnaires, and total daily vitamin D intake was calculated. Logistic regression was used to adjust for gender, parental allergy and time of blood sampling. RESULTS Subjects with atopic eczema or respiratory allergy did not differ from nonallergic controls regarding serum 25OHD levels or calculated vitamin D intake. Subjects sampled in the autumn had significantly higher levels of serum 25OHD than subjects sampled in the winter or spring. Serum 25OHD levels correlated to consumption of vitamin D-fortified lean milk (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION The findings suggest no association between allergy and 25OHD levels in serum or vitamin D intake in adolescents. Serum 25OHD levels correlated to intake of vitamin D-fortified lean milk.

Abstract
A large number of human, animal and in vitro studies have suggested that vitamin D3 (VD3) plays a critical role in inflammatory airway diseases such as asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis, and allergic rhinitis. VD3 acts upon a broad range of immune cells involved in the pathogenesis of these diseases including T-cells, dendritic cells (DCs), macrophages, and B-cells. In addition, VD3 can also regulate the functions of a number of non-immune cells including epithelial cells, fibroblasts, and smooth muscle cells. Given that VD3 has known effects on the immune system, it seems logical that supplementation with VD3 would prove efficacious in the treatment of these three diseases. While many studies, most of which are observational, have suggested that VD3 deficiency is associated with more severe disease, VD3 supplementation trials in humans have resulted in varied outcomes in terms of efficacy. In this review article we will discuss the role of VD3 in these three commonly associated respiratory diseases. We will explore the literature describing associations of VD3 deficiency with patient outcomes, cells in the respiratory microenvironment susceptible to VD3 regulation, conflicting results of VD3 supplementation trials, and potential gaps in our knowledge that may be limiting the widespread use of VD3 for the treatment of respiratory diseases such asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis and allergic rhinitis.
