Abstract
Brucellosis in dromedary camel bulls leads to either temporary or permanent loss of fertility. Camel brucellosis is associated with both orchitis and epididymitis. However, the clinical signs of camel brucellosis are not clear as those in cattle. Therefore, this study aimed to diagnose camel brucellosis based on a serological screening using Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT) followed by competitive ELISA. To understand the impact of brucellosis on camel bull fertility, this study aimed to examine the semen characteristics, evaluate the testicular histopathology, examine hormonal profile, antioxidants and acute phase proteins (APP). A total of 150 mature bulls were used in this study. Blood samples were collected for serological, hormonal, and biochemical analysis. This study revealed that 6.6% and 7.3% of the examined bulls were Brucella-seropositive using RBPT and competitive ELISA, respectively. The Brucella-seropositive dromedary bulls showed poor semen quality, pathological changes orchitis, and lower testosterone. Moreover, our findings showed a higher cortisol level, and significant impairments in the measured APP and antioxidants in Brucella-seropositive bulls. In conclusion, the Brucella-seropositive dromedary bulls showed lower fertility due to poor semen quality and lower testosterone levels. Such lower fertility is likely mediated by high cortisol levels, and impaired APP and antioxidants' defense response.

Abstract
The causative agent of Chagas disease (CD), Trypanosoma cruzi, claims thousands of lives each year. Current diagnostic tools are insufficient to ensure parasitological detection in chronically infected patients has been achieved. A host-derived metabolic signature able to distinguish CD patients from uninfected individuals and assess antiparasitic treatment efficiency is introduced. Serum samples were collected from chronic CD patients, prior to and three years after treatment, and subjected to untargeted metabolomics analysis against demographically matched CD-negative controls. Five metabolites were confirmed by high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. Several database matches for sex steroids were significantly altered in CD patients. A murine experiment corroborated sex steroid perturbation in T. cruzi-infected mice, particularly in male animals. Proteomics analysis also found increased steroidogenesis in the testes of infected mice. Metabolic alterations identified in this study shed light on the pathogenesis and provide the basis for developing novel assays for the diagnosis and screening of CD patients.

Abstract
This study examines the effect of advancing the breeding season on the reproductive performance of dromedary camels under an intensive management system. Using a synchronization protocol, timed natural mating in female camels was carried out either in September (2 months ahead of the natural breeding season, n = 182) or December (peak breeding season, n = 115). The ovarian responses (size of the dominant follicle at the time of mating and ovulation), pregnancy rate, and pregnancy losses were evaluated using ultrasonography. Blood samples were collected after mating to assess progesterone concentrations by RIA. The libido of male camels (n = 13) was evaluated objectively. Results showed that the percentage of female camels with an optimal sized follicle (11-17 mm) for breeding at the time of mating was lower in September compared to December (81.9 vs 91.3%, P = 0.03). The libido of male camels was lower in September than in December (P <0.001). The ovulation rate (86.3 vs 93.9%, P = 0.04), size of the ovulated follicle (12.7 ± 0.1 vs 13.7 ± 0.2 mm, P <0.001), pregnancy rates on Day 14 (47.8 vs 72.2%, P <0.001) and Day 90 (38.5 vs 60.9%, P <0.001) after mating was lower in September compared to December. However, pregnancy loss was not affected between months (15.7 vs 19.5%, P = 0.3). Among pregnant camels, the progesterone concentrations on Days 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 after mating were lower in September as compared to December (P <0.001). In non-pregnant camels, the progesterone concentrations on Days 6, 8 and 10 after mating were also lower in September as compared to December (P <0.001). In conclusion, advancing the breeding season by two months, significantly affects the reproductive performance of dromedary camels, yet, acceptable pregnancy rates can be achieved.

Abstract
The present study focuses on the effect of different levels of ergothioneine and thawing temperature on rooster semen cryopreservation. Semen was diluted in Lake extender containing ergothioneine at 5, 10, 15, and 20 µM and cryopreserved. Two thawing temperatures (37°C for 30 s and 60°C for 5 s) were consequently examined. Sperm motility parameter, membrane integrity, abnormal morphology, viability, apoptotic status, mitochondria activity, and lipid peroxidation were determined after freeze-thaw process. Ergothioneine levels of 5 and 10 µM led to higher (P < 0.05) total motility (66.58 ± 1.44 and 72.11±1.44, respectively) and average path velocity (VAP) (34.54 ± 0.89, 37.28 ± 0.89, respectively). Higher (P < 0.05) significant membrane integrity and mitochondria activity after freeze-thawing were observed in the groups supplemented with 10 µM ergothioneine (68.62 ± 1.24 and 69.12 ± 1.26, respectively). Also, 5 and 10 µM of ergothioneine led to the lowest significant percentage of apoptotic and dead sperm. The total motility and progressive motility resulted in significantly (P < 0.05) higher amount when sperm were thawed with 60°C (60.58 ± 0.91 and 24.76 ± 0.53, respectively) compared to thawed sperm in 37°C. The membrane integrity, viability and mitochondria activity led to significantly (P < 0.05) higher when sperm were thawed with 60°C (58.2 ± 0.78, 63.21 ± 0.80 and 56.85 ± 0.79, respectively). It could be concluded the addition of 5 and 10 µM ergothioneine in the semen extender and thawing temperature at 60˚C in 5 s can be an efficient strategy to preserve rooster cryopreserved semen quality.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to analyse the aetiology and methods of diagnosing reproductive disorders in male dromedary camels. Male camel infertility manifests as one of three conditions: post-coital infertility (IG), inability to copulate (IC) and lack of sexual desire (LSD). IG is mainly a testicular disorder that is linked to a deteriorated seminogram, arrested spermatogenesis, Sertoli cell-only syndrome and testicular degeneration. For IG diagnosis, semen analysis, testicular biopsy and fine-needle aspiration are gold standards. Testicular ultrasonography was generally inefficient. High serum FSH was found in IG camels with oligo- and azoospermia, implying primary spermatogenesis defects. The testis-expressed protein (TEX101) and the epididymis-expressed protein (ECM1) are reliable biomarkers for distinguishing between obstructive and non-obstructive azoospermia. IC manifests in two forms: phimosis (PHI) and erectile dysfunction (ED). PHI is frequently linked to preputial and penile pathologies, as well as leucocytosis, neutrophilia and elevated nitric oxide metabolites. The majority of camels with ED have normal genital organs, and the condition is associated with an increase in cardiac troponin I. LSD is a rare disorder brought on by hormonal imbalances, high temperatures, stress and debilitating diseases. In conclusion, IG diagnosis necessitates semen analysis, testicular biopsy or fine-needle aspiration, and FSH testing, whereas IC diagnosis requires preputial and penile examinations. Diagnostic aids include serum and seminal biomarkers.

Abstract
Ten dromedary mature males were used to study the effects of short artificial lighting and low temperature on the reproductive behavior, testicular size, semen quality and hormone during the non-rutting season and subsequent rutting season. Bulls were allocated into two groups: the first group were subjected to natural daylight and temperature and used as a control. The second group was housed individually in light and temperature controlled rooms in which artificial light (300 lux) was used for 10 h/d, and the temperature was 25.28 ± 0.21 °C. The trial was initiated in mid-June and continued for 10 weeks in the non-rutting season. The reproductive parameters of all animals in the control and room groups were evaluated once every two weeks. The reproductive parameters of all animals in the control and room groups were re-evaluated during the rutting season of the same year. A significant (P < 0.05) increase in the morphometry of the testes, scrotum, libido, and reaction time score, as well as serum melatonin and testosterone levels, was observed in the treatment non-rutting season (TNRS) group compared to in the control non-rutting season (CNRS) group. The testicular volume, reaction time score, serum melatonin, and testosterone were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the treatment rutting season (TRS) group than in the control non-rutting season (CRS) group. Improvement in the semen parameters were observed in the TNRS and TRS groups compared to in the CRS group. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that short artificial lighting and low temperature can induce rutting out of season and improve the reproductive parameters of dromedary males during the subsequent rutting season.

Abstract
Azoospermia is not an uncommon infertility problem in the male dromedary (Camelus dromedarius). Azoospermia was investigated via clinical findings, testicular biopsy as well as the evaluation of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), concentration of camel testis protein (TEX101) and camel epididymis-specific extracellular matrix protein (ECM1) in seminal fluids. Azoospermic male camels (AZOO group, n = 28) that had been detected to be infertile as a result of lack of resulting pregnancies after repeated mating's for at least one season were included in this study. Clinical examination, semen analysis and testicular biopsy sampling were conducted for each individual animal. Blood samples were collected from the AZOO and from reference fertile males (FERT group, n = 8) for the assay of FSH hormone and semen biomarkers (TEX101 and ECM1). There were bilaterally normal-sized testes in 42.8%, bilaterally small-sized testes in 35.7%, bilaterally large-sized testes in 7.1%, no testicles in 7.1% and only one testicle in 7.1% of azoospermic animals. Sertoli cell-only syndrome (SCO) and maturation arrest were observed in 78.6% and 21.4% of the animals, respectively. There were greater concentrations of FSH in the AZOO group compared with the FERT group (P = 0.01). In conclusion, azoospermia in dromedary camels is mainly associated with spermatogenic defects and greater serum FSH concentrations. Seminal biomarkers, therefore, might be feasible indicators for identifying azoospermia in the male dromedary camels and the condition of non-obstructive azoospermia was seemingly prevalent in the male dromedary camels in the present study.

Abstract
New world (NW) camelids, alpaca, llama, vicuña, and guanaco, and old world (OW) camelids, Bactrian and dromedary camels are related and have many of the same anatomical features and disease susceptibilities though they are also very different. Only the free-ranging population of wild Bactrian camel is endangered. Bactrian camels held in zoos are generally of domestic origin. Vicuña are listed as vulnerable. In addition to those camelids held in captivity, there are domesticated populations of camelids (except vicuña and guanaco) maintained throughout the world. Most are fairly hardy animals, but there are some specific disease concerns. Domesticated llamas and alpacas have become hobby pets and thus management and genetic issues are an increasing source of disease. These include obesity, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and intoxications, metabolic derangements, and congenital malformations (particularly in the young). Domesticated animals are also more prone to degenerative arthropathy and dental disease as they age than wild camelids. Ovarian hydrobursitis is an important source of infertility in dromedaries. Important infectious diseases include coccidiosis, bovine viral diarrhea virus, alpaca fever, and meningeal worm of NW camelids, trypanosomiasis and camelpox in OW camels, and foot and mouth disease in Bactrian camels and NW camelids. These and other disease processes are discussed in this chapter.

Abstract
Toxoplasma gondii is an apicomplexan parasite that infects most species of warm-blooded animals, including humans, and causes abortions and severe damage to the fetal central nervous system. During pregnancy, the prevalence of toxoplasmosis increases throughout the second and third quarter of gestation, while the hormones progesterone and estradiol simultaneously increase. Thus, it has been suggested that these hormones could affect parasite reproduction. This study was mainly focused on an estradiol regulatory factor-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD) gene in T. gondii. Our data showed that estradiol promoted Pru (Type II) and VEG (Type III) infection and thus significantly contributed to the pathogenicity of T. gondii in mice. Subsequently, we found that this phenomenon may relate to the interplay of T. gondii and estradiol. We reported that estradiol can enter T. gondii tachyzoites. Bioinformatics analysis showed that T. gondii may have a residual estradiol metabolism-related gene HSD. To verify the gene function, HEK293T cells were transiently transfected with Tg-HSD and gene expression was induced. Then, HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) analysis showed that Tg-HSD can efficiently transform estrone into estradiol. Moreover, Tg-HSD -overexpressing parasites showed significantly enhanced pathogenicity and upregulation of estradiol levels in mice. In conclusion, estradiol can promote T. gondii infection in vitro and in vivo, and this may be related to its Tg- HSD gene.

Abstract
Improving sperm motility and viability are major goals to improve efficiency in the poultry industry. In this study, the effects of supplemental dietary turmeric by-product (TBP) from commercial turmeric production on sperm motility, viability, and antioxidative status were examined in domestic fowl. Mature Rhode Island Red roosters were divided into two groups - controls (groupC) without TBP administration and test subjects (groupT) fed a basal diet supplemented with 0.8g of TBP/day in a temperature-controlled rearing facility (Experiment 1) and 1.6g/day under heat stress (Experiment 2) for 4 weeks. In Experiment 1, TBP dietary supplementation increased the sperm motility variables straight-line velocity, curvilinear velocity, and linearity based on a computer-assisted semen analysis, 2 weeks following TBP supplementation. In Experiment 2, using flow cytometry, sperm viability at 3 and 4 weeks following TBP supplementation was greater in Group T than C, and this increase was consistent with a reduction in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production at 2 and 4 weeks. The results of both experiments clearly demonstrate that dietary supplementation with TBP enhanced sperm motility in the controlled-temperature conditions as well as sperm viability, and reduced ROS generation when heat stress prevailed. Considering its potential application in a range of environments, TBP may serve as an economical and potent antioxidant to improve rooster fertility.

Abstract
GnRH treatment has been suggested to increase testosterone levels temporarily and to stimulate libido in stallions, but its use has not fully ascertained in dromedary camels. The aim of this work was to study the effects of administering 100 μg of GnRH on testosterone profile, libido and semen parameters in dromedary camels. The same bulls were used as self-controls and experimental group. Blood samples were collected every 20 min (T0-T12) for 4h, and semen collections were performed over a 2-hour period after T12. GnRH was administered immediately after T0. In GnRH-treated bulls, testosterone levels showed an upward trend, peaking after 140 min, and then slowly decreasing. GnRH administration also led to a decrease in mating time and an increase in spermatozoa concentration. Overall, it seems that administration of 100 μg GnRH might increase testosterone levels temporarily and enhance camel reproduction performance.

Abstract
In many cases parasites display highly complex life cycles that include the penetration and permanence of the larva or adults within host organs, but even in those that only have one host, reciprocal, intricate interactions occur. Evidence indicates that steroid hormones have an influence on the development and course of parasitic infections. The host gender's susceptibility to infection, and the related differences in the immune response are good examples of the host-parasite interplay. However, the capacity of these organisms to synthesize their own steroidogenic hormones still has more questions than answers. It is now well-known that many parasites synthesize ecdysteroids, but limited information is available on sex steroid and corticosteroid synthesis. This review intends to summarize some of the existing information in the field. In most, but not all parasitosis the host's hormonal environment determines the susceptibility, the course, and severity of parasite infections. In most cases the infection disturbs the host environment, and activates immune responses that end up affecting the endocrine system. Furthermore, sex steroids and corticosteroids may also directly modify the parasite reproduction and molting. Available information indicates that parasites synthesize some steroid hormones, such as ecdysteroids and sex steroids, and the presence and activity of related enzymes have been demonstrated. More recently, the synthesis of corticosteroid-like compounds has been shown in Taenia solium cysticerci and tapeworms, and in Taenia crassiceps WFU cysticerci. In-depth knowledge of the parasite's endocrine properties will contribute to understand their reproduction and reciprocal interactions with the host, and may also help designing tools to combat the infection in some clinical situations.

Abstract
A series of five factorial arranged experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of different management during semen collection on the microbial quality (bacterial load, type of microbes and frequency of isolation) of dromedaries' semen. Microbial analysis of seventy-nine fresh ejaculates from twenty-two camels showed the presence of nine variant colonies. The most prevalent organisms in the dromedary semen were species of Staphylococcus, Bacillus and Streptococcus. One yeast species was represented among the isolates. The middle aged camels (9-13 years) had significantly (P>0.05) higher mean bacterial loads than young (4-8 years) and old aged (14-18 years) animals. The mean bacterial populations of ejaculates collected by an electro-ejaculator were significantly (P>0.05) higher than those collected by an artificial vagina. Candida spp. was identified in 53.8% of the samples collected by an electro-ejaculator and was not detected in ejaculates collected by an artificial vagina. The mean semen bacterial load detected during the breeding season was significantly (P<0.01) higher than that collected during the non-breeding season. No fungi were isolated from semen samples collected in the non-breeding season. The difference between the mean semen bacterial loads in the first and the second ejaculate was highly significant (P<0.01). The preputial wash significantly (P<0.01) reduced the bacterial load. This study revealed that the microbial contamination of dromedaries' semen is found in different intensities during different management procedures of semen collection.

Abstract
Camels are seasonal breeders, and their sexual behavior is influenced by environmental conditions, but the relationship between climatic factors and sexual behavior has been poorly described in the available literature. Nowadays, the male camel living habit is shifting towards captivity; thus, this study was carried out to evaluate the sexual behavior of housed male dromedary camel through female's parades and to correlate it with climatic parameters. Four housed sires, reared for semen collection, and one dam were used and the trial lasted 8 weeks, considering the first week as control. Six days per week and during evenings, the female was brought near each males' boxes, while two observers filled a behavioral sampling ethogram and scored the male sexual behavior. After this parade, blood samples were taken from the female to evaluate the estradiol concentration. In addition, the following meteorological parameters were recorded, everyday, at 9:00 a.m. and 19:00 p.m.: pressure, wind, temperature, humidity, and H-index. The correlation between sexual behavioral score and female estradiol concentration and climate parameters was analyzed. All the behavioral parameters showed a significant upward trend; female estradiol concentration varied during the period and picked at week 5. Male sexual behavior was negatively correlated with morning H-index, wind, and temperature, and positively correlated with pressure and evening humidity, whereas it was not correlated with estrogen. In conclusion, female parade was a successful method to evaluate and stimulate the occurrence of housed male dromedary camel sexual activity that resulted to be negatively affected by hot temperature, warm wind, and lack of rain.
