Abstract
In this study the pattern of color of inheritance based on Mendel's laws on the Clarias gariepinus strain was evaluated, to ascertain the different traits of albino, normally pigmented, and a combination of both traits that could be passed across from the parent stocks to the progenies. Since albinism is caused by a series of genetic abnormalities resulting in the reduction of melanin production, partial diallel cross between normally pigmented and albino fish was carried out using two females (albino and normal pigmented brood fish) weighing 2.5 kg and 3 kg, respectively; they were used in crossing two males (albino and normal pigmented brood fish) that weighed 1.5 kg and 1 kg, respectively. They were paired with normal pigmented (♂Np × ♀Np) and albino C. gariepinus (♂Ae × ♀Ae) fish to produce a pure strain of normally pigmented and albino strain, respectively. To produce the hybrids, they were paired (♂Np × ♀Ae) and (♂Ae × ♀Np), respectively. The outcomes of this study showed that crossbreeding between normally pigmented females and albino males produced all normally pigmented F1 generation, while some quantity of albino (36.67%) at crossing male albino to normally pigmented females were produced. However, the pure strains breed true (100%). Each hybrid exhibits heterosis after 56 days of rearing compared to the normal strain that was crossed, although the normally pigmented fish gives a better SGR. Hence, there is a need to investigate if sex is linked with albinism.

Abstract
The effect of dietary supplementation with sodium butyrate, β-glucan and vitamins (A, D3, E, K, C) on breeding indicators and immune parameters of juvenile African catfish was examined. The fish were fed with unenriched (group C) and enriched feed with a variable proportion of sodium butyrate/β-glucan, and constant content of vitamins (W1-W3). After the experiment, blood and the middle gut were collected. The microbiome of the gut was determined using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Liver tissue was collected for determination of expression of immune-related genes (HSP70, IL-1β, TNFα). W2 and W3 were characterized by the most favorable values of breeding indicators (p < 0.05). The highest blood cortisol concentration was in group C (71.25 ± 10.45 ng/mL), and significantly the lowest in W1 (46.03 ± 7.01 ng/ mL) (p < 0.05). The dominance of Cetobacterium was observed in all study groups, with the largest share in W3 (65.25%) and W1 (61.44%). Gene expression showed an increased number of HSP70 genes in W1. IL-1β and TNFα genes peaked at W3. The W3 variant turns out to be the most beneficial supplementation, due to the improvement of breeding and immunological parameters. The data obtained can be used to create a preparation for commercial use in the breeding of this species.

Abstract
The common tench is an important thermophilic freshwater fish used for aquaculture diversification. This species is farmed in ponds as well as caught in the wild in many European and China. Artificial reproduction under controlled conditions is one of the most important part of modern aquaculture. In this study, two experiments were conducted in which the influence of hormonal agents (Ovopel and Ovaprim - experiment I) and the origin of the spawning stock (wild and pond-cultured - experiment II) on the success of reproduction in terms of ovulation rate (%), latency time (h), pseudo-gonadosomatic index (PGSI, %), hatching rate (%), abnormal larvae rate (%), and spawning efficiency coefficient (Se) were examined. While the wild fish could not reproduce in the absence of hormonal treatment with 0 % ovulation rate. In all tested hormonal treatment allowed to obtain high-quality eggs with hatching rates of over 83 %. Significant differences in latency time were observed among groups from different origins, such as differences in ovulation rate (79 % vs. 90 %, for pond-cultured and wild fish, respectively), PGSI (8.2 vs. 8.9), and hatching rate (63.8 % vs. 84.3 %), which showed significantly better quality in fish from the wild than those from pond culture. This means that when spawners of common tench of various origins are available, it is better to choose spawners from natural waters for artificial reproduction.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the dietary effects of honeybee pollen (BP) on growth parameters, intestinal microbiota, hepatic histoarchitecture, and intestinal histomorphometry of African catfish Clarias gariepinus juveniles. The feeding experiment was carried out in a recirculating aquaculture system under controlled conditions for 21 days to achieve more than a 10-fold increase in weight in fish from the control group. Fish were fed well-balanced commercial feed without any supplements and served as a reference group (group C) and other diets enriched with varying BP levels as 1% (BP1), 2% (BP2), and 3% (BP3). Results showed a significant (p < 0.05) effect of the dietary BP not only on the growth parameters (such as final body weight: 5.0 g to 6.6−7.5 g, weight gain: 0.23 g/d to 0.31−0.35 g/d, body length: 84.7 mm to 93.8−95.9 mm, and specific growth rate: 11.7%/d to 13.1−13.7%/d, group C vs. experimental groups, respectively) but also on the development of beneficially important gut microbiota, such as lactic acid-producing bacteria. In BP-enriched groups, an average of 45% higher body weight gain was observed compared to those reared in the control group. The histological analysis showed that dietary BP may have a positive effect on the development of the intestinal tract and may enhance the absorption of nutrients with the potential ability to maintain a normal hepatic histoarchitecture of the treated African catfish. The results obtained suggest the optimum level of BP additive to feed for African catfish should be 1%.

Abstract
Pikeperch is one of the major new fish species in freshwater aquaculture. Artificial reproduction is difficult in this species, and many aspects require further study. These include synchronization of female maturation, latency time, gamete quality and spawner survival rate. For these reasons, many fish farmers must constantly replenish their spawning pikeperch stock, often with wild fish. Data on the suitability for the reproduction of wild fish obtained in several lakes during the reproduction period were collected in this study. The findings indicated that larger fish (> 1.5 kg BW) and those obtained in larger and deeper lakes (> 12.0 m mean depth vs. < 5.0 m mean depth, respectively, for deep and shallow lakes) were more valuable to fish farmers during the spawning season when they were obtained because a higher percentage of suitability for artificial reproduction and a higher embryo survival rate was observed for them. The mean embryo survival rate was high and was 84.5 ± 3.9 % on the 3rd day after fertilization and 79.7 ± 3.4 % at hatching. Among the group of the smallest females (< 1.5 kg), the highest percentage of nonsynchronous oocyte maturation occurred. This result demonstrated the successful procedure of both artificial reproduction and a successful method for selecting females for spawning.

Abstract
Transcription activator-like effector nuclease (TALEN) plasmids targeting the channel catfish gonadotropin-releasing hormone (cfGnRH) gene were delivered into fertilized eggs with double electroporation to sterilize channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Targeted cfGnRH fish were sequenced and base deletion, substitution, and insertion were detected. The gene mutagenesis was achieved in 52.9% of P1 fish. P1 mutants (individuals with human-induced sequence changes at the cfGnRH locus) had lower spawning rates (20.0−50.0%) when there was no hormone therapy compared to the control pairs (66.7%) as well as having lower average egg hatch rates (2.0% versus 32.3−74.3%) except for one cfGnRH mutated female that had a 66.0% hatch rate. After low fertility was observed in 2016, application of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analog (LHRHa) hormone therapy resulted in good spawning and hatch rates for mutants in 2017, which were not significantly different from the controls (p > 0.05). No exogenous DNA fragments were detected in the genome of mutant P1 fish, indicating no integration of the plasmids. No obvious effects on other economically important traits were observed after the knockout of the reproductive gene in the P1 fish. Growth rates, survival, and appearance between mutant and control individuals were not different. While complete knock-out of reproductive output was not achieved, as these were mosaic P1 brood stock, gene editing of channel catfish for the reproductive confinement of gene-engineered, domestic, and invasive fish to prevent gene flow into the natural environment appears promising.

Abstract
One of the finfish species that European and North American breeders are most interested in is the northern pike, Esox lucius. Artificial reproduction and the production of viable larvae has a huge impact on further culture. The quality of stripped gametes is highly variable. Therefore, it is important to use gametes with maximum efficiency, which has a direct impact on the amount of stocking material produced and therefore on the economics of production. The aim of this study was to compare northern pike fertilization efficiency, expressed as the survival rate of embryos until hatching. In the first experiment, the highest percentage of hatched embryos was observed in groups of eggs fertilized in a saline diluent prepared with deionized water (after reverse osmosis: group D), at 61.2% and 56.5% in the NaCl5-D and NaCl6-D groups, respectively. The highest percentage of hatched embryos in the second experiment was observed in the egg groups activated with Woynarovich solution (V) at 75.5% and 74.7% for V-D (D—deionized water) and V-T (T—tap water), respectively. In all cases, preparing the activation medium using T versus D water resulted in lower fertilization percentages and lower percentages of hatched larvae. At the same time, two variants (V and B1—Billard solution) were tested during mass spawning in three hatcheries using hatchery water (tap water). The results showed that repeatability was the highest when using activation medium B1.

Abstract
Simple Summary Fish farming in sub-Saharan Africa remains a source of livelihood for many househlods, but increased productivity is severely constrained by the high cost of fish feeds through the use fishmeal (FM) which is usually not easily available and when available is expensive. Therefore, this study evaluated the suitability of black soldier fly larvae meal (BM) as an alternative protein to FM. Four diet types were tested: control (100% FM; 0% BM), BM33 (67% FM; 33% BM), BM67 (33% FM; 67% BM) and BM100 (0% FM; 100% BM). The experiment was conducted for 20 weeks. The average daily feed intake and body weight gain of the fish were affected by the treatment diet. However, the survival rate and feed conversion ratio were not affected by the diet. The fish fed on diet BM33 had a 14.4% increase in weight gain compared to that of the control diet. Return on investment and the cost–benefit ratio were similar for various diets, suggesting that BM can be a suitable and cost-equivalent dietary protein substitute of FM in aquafeed for growing tilapia fish in earthen ponds for the market. Abstract In Sub-Saharan Africa, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) make up over 80% of aquaculture production. However, the local aquaculture farmers are restricted by the unavailability and expensive cost of formulated rations. To reduce reliance on the scarce and expensive fishmeal used in fish feeds, alternative insect protein has been successfully utilized in many aquafeeds. However, data on the influence of insect-based feed on the growth and economic benefit of feeding tilapia with the emerging insect-based diet are scanty. This study investigated the effect of partially and completely substituting fishmeal with black soldier fly larval meal (BM) on growth and economic parameters of tilapia. The O. niloticus was fed a standard commercial diet as a control (100% FM; 0% BM), BM33 (67% FM; 33% BM), BM67 (33% FM; 67% BM) and BM100 (0% FM; 100% BM) for 20 weeks in randomly assigned cages mounted in an 800 m2 earthen pond. Results from this study showed that diet type significantly (p < 0.05) affected the feed intake of the fish as well as weight gain. The feed conversion ratio and survival rate of O. niloticus did not vary across the different diets. Fish fed Diet1 had a 15% increase in weight when compared to fish fed the control diet. Return on investment and the cost–benefit ratio was similar across the diets, suggesting that BM is a suitable and cost-equivalent dietary supplement of FM up to 100% in aquafeed for growing tilapia fish in earthen ponds for the market.

Abstract
Hybrid sterility is an inevitable phenomenon in the speciation process to avoid indiscriminate increases in species, but it is not always unconditional. We used computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA) to analyze sperm motility of Cobitis hankugensis, Iksookimia longicorpa, and their unisexual natural hybrids. In parental species, the sperm concentrations of C. hankugensis and I. longicorpa were 11.6 ± 4.8 × 109 and 16.5 ± 6.8 × 109 , respectively. For sperm motility, the total motility was higher in the parental species (C. hankugensis, 91.3%; I. longicorpa, 87.5%) than other hybrids. After 1 min, the motility duration was reduced to 14% in C. hankugensis and 3.3% in I. longicorpa. This result could indicate that the duration of sperm motility of C. hankugensis is longer than that of I. longicorpa up to 1 min after spermatozoa activation. All of the hybrids had a low concentration and it was distinct from their parent species. Total motility and other velocity parameters also showed significantly lower values except for the HHL (one from the C. hankugensis genome with two from the I. longicorpa genome) type motility measurement (13.6%). These results suggest that the hybrids derived from C. hankugensis and I. longicorpa, are not completely infertile, contrary to histological observations.

Abstract
Simple Summary Quite severe biological imbalances have been caused by the often ill-conceived and destructive actions of humans. The natural environment, with its flora and fauna, has been subjected to a strong, direct or indirect, anthropogenic impact. In consequence, the total population of wild animals has been considerably reduced, despite efforts to compensate for these errors and expand the scope of animal legal protection to include endangered species. Many animal populations on the verge of extinction have been saved. These actions are ongoing and embrace endangered species as well as those which may be threatened with extinction in the near future as a result of climate change. The changes affect economically valuable species and those of low value, whose populations are still relatively strong and stable. Pre-emptive protective actions and developing methods for the reproduction and rearing of rare species may ensure their survival when the ecological balance is upset. The blue bream is one such species which should be protected while there is still time. Abstract The blue bream Ballerus ballerus (L.) is one of two species of the Ballerus genus occurring in Europe. The biotechnology for its reproduction under controlled conditions needs to be developed to conserve its local populations. Therefore, a range of experiments were performed to obtain valuable gametes from blue bream following hormonal stimulation with carp pituitary homogenate (CPH), Ovopel and Ovaprim. CPH and Ovopel were injected twice and Ovaprim—once, under a pectoral fin. The spawners were inspected 12 h after the last injection, and the gametes were collected. Eggs were collected from spawning females and fertilized with sperm from three males. The smallest number of ovulating blue bream (four females) was obtained from individuals stimulated with Ovaprim. There were six to nine ovulating females in the other groups, accounting for 60–90% of the females in the respective groups. The latency period was the shortest in the spawners stimulated with Ovopel. The fish in this group ovulated 14 h after the hormonal injection. Spawning was synchronized and all females spawned simultaneously. The highest average weight of eggs per fish (75.4 g) was obtained from the females stimulated with Ovopel, whereas the individuals stimulated with Ovaprim provided the smallest average amount of eggs (49.5 g). The study showed that blue bream spawners are not very sensitive to reproduction-related handling under controlled conditions.

Abstract
The development of semen cryopreservation strategies is necessary to improve the semen storage technologies of species of great commercial interest for aquaculture. Recent studies demonstrate that lipids play an important role in the fertility and cryotolerance of fish gametes. This study investigated the effect of exogenous lipids in the freezing medium on the post-thaw functional parameters of Salmo salar spermatozoa. Semen samples (n = 12) were incubated in standard extender supplemented with different concentrations of oleic acid (OA, C18:1n9), linoleic acid (LA, C18:2n6), arachidonic acid (ARA, C20:4n6) and cholesterol-loaded cyclodextrin (CLC). Post-thaw motility, membrane integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), superoxide anion (O2•-) and fertility rates were analyzed. The results revealed that the semen incubated with 0.003 mmol/L OA increased the motility (~7%) and ΔΨm (~2%) (P < 0.05), but membrane integrity and fertility were not increased. The addition of 0.003 mmol/L LA increased the motility (~4%) and all LA extenders increased the ΔΨm (P < 0.05); however, LA increased the O2•- levels and decreased the membrane integrity and fertility (P < 0.05). Semen incubated with ARA improved sperm motility (~5%), membrane integrity (~10.5%) and fertility rates (~11%) (P < 0.05). The maximum improvement in post-thaw sperm functionality was observed by adding 0.003 mmol/L ARA. In contrast, sperm quality parameters and fertility were decreased by the CLC addition (P < 0.05). This study showed that ARA could be considered as an additive for semen cryopreservation and could be relevant in the reproductive process and reproductive management of Salmo salar.

Abstract
Although ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernua) are widely distributed in Eurasia, in some regions (i.e., North America) ruffe are considered an invasive species. There have been no reports on artificial reproduction of this species. A study, therefore, was conducted to evaluate reproduction of ruffe with results of specimens captured from their natural habitat and cultured (F1 generation) specimens being compared. Spawning specimens from both stocks were treated with hormonal preparations: carp pituitary homogenate (CPH), Ovopel, Ovaprim and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and results were analyzed by comparing response to the specimens of control groups. Spermiation outcomes and sperm motility of the captured and cultured ruffe were similar and with all hormonal treatments, there was a slightly greater sperm motility (55.6 %-57.1 %) in comparison to specimens of control groups (46.7 %-47.1 %). For captured specimens, there was no asynchronous development of oocytes, whereas in cultured specimens 32 % of females had asynchronous development of oocytes. The ovulation rate in specimens of all treated groups was 100 %, whereas specimens in the control groups did not reproductively mature and have ovulations. The latency time from time of hormonal treatments to initiation of reproductive functions depended on the spawning agent used and oocyte maturation stage and there was the shortest latency after using CPH and the longest with hCG treatment. The embryo survival and hatching rates varied with use of different hormonal preparations to induce reproduction: greatest hatching rates with hCG treatment (86.4 %-88.9 %), followed by Ovaprim (78.2 %-80.2 %) and least hatching rate with Ovopel and CPH treatments (66.0 %-67.1 % and 64.0 %-66.0 %, respectively).

Abstract
Fertilization is one of the most important procedures in artificial reproduction and it directly affects the reproduction outcome. When there is optimization of fertilization, there can be a positive effect on subsequent reproductive processes and economic aspects of aquaculture. This study was conducted to determine time for which oocytes and sperm of barbel Barbus barbus retain fertilization capacity following placement in freshwater. Furthermore, the amount of ovarian fluid, excreted by fish during spawning with eggs (OFI; %) was determined, along with the chemical composition and effects on fertilization were determined. Gametes, ovarian fluid, and seminal plasma from barbel spawning specimens of the F4 generation were used to conduct the study. Ovarian fluid accounted for 14%-68% of contents of the mass released at spawning and post-spawning composition differed depending on whether hormonal treatments were utilized for control of reproduction. There was an association (R2 = 0.982; P = 0.000) between the pH of ovarian fluid and the barbel embryo survival rate. There was the greatest survival rate (>60 %) when the pH range of 7.9-8.4 and there was a lesser embryo viability when pH values were lesser or greater than values within this range (P < 0.05). The results from the study indicate that barbel eggs retain fertilization capacity longer (as long as 210 s) after activation by placement in fresh water than spermatozoa (about 30 s).

Abstract
The initial experiment of this study was conducted to determine whether sex steroid concentrations varied before, during and after the reproductive season of European grayling (Thymallus thymallus L.) farmed broodstock confined in a recirculation aquaculture system (RAS). The results indicated that the plasma sex steroid (testosterone - T, progesterone - P4 and estradiol - E2) concentrations varied (P < 0.05) during these reproductive periods. There were greater concentrations of T, P4 and E2 before and during the grayling reproductive season indicating there are important functions of these steroid hormones associated with gonadal maturation, gamete production and reproductive behavior during the spawning period. In the second experiment of this study, the effectiveness of European grayling controlled reproduction treatment regimens was analyzed and there were 34.69 % and 68.18 % having ovulations in the 2 and 3-year-old broodfish, respectively. Of the embryos developing to the eyed-egg stage, there were 3.70 % and 6.87 % derived from eggs of 2- and 3-year-old grayling females, respectively. Proportions of embryos developing from the eyed-egg stage to hatching were 38.1 % and 52.1 % from eggs of 2- and 3-year-old grayling females, respectively, when there was culturing in a RAS. The results indicate that with grayling broodfish there is greater efficacy in induction of reproduction when there is imposing of the controlled reproduction treatment regimen on 3- rather than 2-year-old broodfish.

Abstract
As a result of evolution, various finfish species have developed different breeding strategies. However, there are some similarities, and one of them is the positive effect of ovarian fluid on spermatozoa. The opposite of this phenomenon was found in the common barbel (Barbus barbus). The present study analyzed the effect of ovarian fluid (OF), distilled water (DW) and Woynarovich solution (WS) on the motility, longevity and kinetics of barbel spermatozoa. These spermatozoa parameters were also evaluated with various dilutions of ovarian fluid (OF) in relation to distilled water [0:4 (Group OF 0%), 1:3 (Group OF 25%), 1:1 (Group OF 50%), 3:1 (Group OF 75%), 4:0 (Group OF 100%)] and spermatozoa reactivation after a 30 s (Group OFR30s 100%) treatment in ovarian fluid. The motility analysis was carried out using computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA). The negative interaction of ovarian fluid with spermatozoa motility in the same fish species was recorded for the first time. In pure ovarian fluid, the average spermatozoa motility (MOT) decreased significantly (1.40 ± 0.94%). The negative effect of ovarian fluid-to-spermatozoa motility was reversible, and after a 30 s treatment in ovarian fluid and later dilution with water, spermatozoa motility was reactivated (from 2.25 ± 0.53% vs 69.78 ± 6.02%). The use of Woynarovich solution as an activator of spermatozoa movement had a positive effect (P < 0.05) on spermatozoa movement longevity (motility up to 90 s) and the percentage of motile spermatozoa compared to distilled water (up to 45 s) and ovarian fluid (P < 0.05).
