Abstract
BACKGROUND Pilates has captured interest due to its possible advantages during pregnancy and childbirth. Although research indicates that Pilates may reduce labor duration, alleviate pain, and improve satisfaction with the childbirth experience, consensus on these outcomes remains elusive, underscoring the necessity for additional studies. AIM This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the impact of Pilates exercises on labor duration among pregnant women. METHODS The online database was searched to yield the literature using the terms of 'Pilates', 'childbirth', and 'labor duration', and similar terms including PubMed, Clinical Key, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews up to June 25, 2023. Studies were considered eligible if they were randomized or clinical controlled trials (RCTs/CCTs) published in English, focusing on healthy pregnant women without exercise contraindications. The studies needed to include interventions involving Pilates or exercise movement techniques, a comparison group with no exercise, and outcomes related to labor duration, the period of the active phase, and the second stage of delivery. RESULTS Eleven studies, totalling 1239 participants, were included in the analysis. These studies provided high-quality evidence from exercise only RCTs/CCTs. The findings indicated a significant reduction in the active phase of labor (8 RCTs, n = 1195; Mean Difference [MD] = -56.35, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] [-89.46 to -23.25]) and overall labor duration (8 RCTs, n = 898; MD = -93.93, 95% CI [-138.34 to -49.51]) in pregnant women who engaged in Pilates exercises compared to those who did not but doesn't affect on the duration of the second stage of labor (7 RCTs, n = 1135; MD = -0.11, 95% CI [-7.21 to 6.99]). CONCLUSIONS While this review primarily addresses the effects of Pilates on healthy and low-risk pregnant women, the findings suggest a potential role for Pilates in shortening labor duration. Therefore, engaging in Pilates or similar physical activities is recommended for pregnant women to potentially facilitate a more efficient labor process.

Abstract
Purpose: Pilates-based programs can help pregnant women deal with the physical and psychological burden derived by major changes in their body. This study was designed to primarily test, in pregnant women, the dose-response and health effects of both pre-partum and post-partum, online Pilates-based program on weight control, low back pain (LBP) severity, sleep disturbances, mood and depression levels. Methods: A total of 136 pregnant women were screened for eligibility (low-risk pregnancy; aged 18-45 years; single pregnancy; 20-28-week gestational age, normal BMI). Participants completed an online Pilates-based program during pregnancy and after delivery, through an online platform guided by a Pilates, Yoga and Lagree certified instructor. Main outcomes (weight control, LBP disability, sleep quality, mood, and mental health) were assessed at baseline and at the completion of pre- and post-partum programs. Results: Regarding pre-partum, significant gains in weight were observed only in low- and intermediate-amount exercisers. Only high-amount exercisers did not display significant increase in LBP-related disability (+42.7%; p = .21) unlike low (+12.2%; p < .0001) and intermediate exercisers (+9.6%; p < .0001). Sleep disturbances increased significantly in low- (+24.3%; p = .005) but not in intermediate- (+4.6%; p = .50) and high-amount exercisers (-0.1%; p = .91). Regardless of the amount of exercise, depression scores improved in all groups. Following post-partum intervention (n = 40), only intermediate-amount exercisers showed significant reductions in sleep disturbances (-24.1%; p = .003) and depression (15.9%; p = .04). Conclusions: Approximately 270 min/week of an online Pilates-based program were needed to prevent LBP worsening, and sleep deterioration in pregnant women. A different pattern was outlined for those women resuming the Pilates-based intervention at post-partum, with 150 min/week emerging as the "dose" of exercise capable of inducing the largest improvements in LBP, sleep, and mood disturbances.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the effect of the Pilates method on the quality of life, fatigue, and sleep quality of patients undergoing adjuvant clinical treatment with hormone therapy for breast cancer. METHODS A randomized two-arm clinical trial with 34 breast cancer women that were randomized into two groups: a) Intervention group, who performed 16 weeks of mat Pilates; b) Control group, who maintained their daily routine activities and received three educational sessions. The questionnaires for each variable were applied before the intervention, after the intervention, and six months after the end of the intervention. Quality of life was assessed by The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30 (EORTC QLQ-C30), fatigue by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Fatigue (FACT-F), and sleep quality by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. RESULTS The fatigue variable presented a time effect (p = 0.034) regardless of the analyzed group, in which a difference was found between baseline and the post-intervention period (p = 0.037). The variable sleep showed an effect of time (p = 0.025), presenting a difference between the baseline period and six months, with improvement for all participants (p = 0.004). Global health also showed a positive change also for all participants, with an isolated effect of time (p = 0.024). CONCLUSION Interventions based on the Pilates method may bring positive results in quality of life, fatigue, and sleep quality in patients undergoing adjuvant treatment for breast cancer, but further studies on the subject are needed to prove the results in a larger number of patients.

Abstract
Background Current literature illustrates a disparity in trunk stability push up performance (TSPU), as measured by the Functional Movement Screen (FMSTM), in females throughout the lifespan when compared to their male counterparts. Hypothesis/Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel exercise approach to a trunk stability (NEATS) program compared to a standard Pilates program on TSPU performance in active females aged 18-45 years. It was hypothesized that subjects in the NEATS program would have greater improvements on outcomes related to trunk stability than subjects in the Pilates program. Study Design Randomized controlled trial. Methods All subjects were tested at baseline on Beighton criteria, the FMSTM, Y-Balance Test Upper Quarter and Lower Quarter, and grip strength by an evaluator blinded to group allocation. Subjects were randomized into the NEATS (n=17) or the Pilates group (n=19). The intervention period lasted eight weeks, with exercise progression at weeks two, four, and six. Results The main outcome was between-group pass rates on the TSPU. At posttest, 41% (n=7) of the NEATS group and 42% (n=8) of the Pilates group passed the TSPU, though there was no difference between groups (p=0.97). Significant differences were noted on the TSPU (Pilates, NEATS p=0.01) and composite scores (Pilates p=0.01; NEATS p=0.03). No within-group improvements were noted on the individual scores of the FMSTM (p=0.05-0.66). Within-group differences were noted on the posterolateral reach on the Y-Balance Test Lower Quarter (p=0.03) in the Pilates group. Between-group posttest continuous measures were not significantly different (p=0.17-0.96). Conclusion Improvements in trunk stability were comparable between the multi-planar NEATS program and a standard Pilates program suggesting that both can be used to improve trunk stability performance in active females. Abstract
BACKGROUND Pilates is expected to have a positive effect on women with weakened abdominal muscles after childbirth. Pilates may have a beneficial effect on the structure and function of the abdominal muscles in pregnant women. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Pilates on inter-recti distance, thickness of the rectus abdominis, waist circumference, and abdominal muscle endurance in primiparous women. METHODS Thirty-five primiparous postpartum women were assigned to either the Pilates exercise group (n = 20) or the control group (n = 15). Pilates was undertaken by the exercise group for 50 min/day, 5 days/week, for 4 weeks. The control group maintained their daily activities without any intervention. The inter-recti distance was measured at three locations along the linea alba, and the thickness of the rectus abdominis was measured using ultrasound. Abdominal muscle endurance was measured using a repeated 1-min curl-up test. Waist circumference was also measured. RESULTS The exercise group showed significant improvements from baseline in inter-recti distance, waist circumference, and abdominal muscle endurance (p < 0.05). The control group showed no significant improvement in these variables. Compared with the control group, the exercise group showed significantly improved performance in terms of inter-recti distance, waist circumference, and abdominal muscle endurance (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study demonstrate that Pilates was effective in reducing inter-recti distance and waist circumference and improving abdominal muscle endurance in primiparous postpartum women. Pilates is considered an effective exercise for improving muscle structure and function in primiparous postpartum women, helping in the recovery from, and preventing, diastasis rectus abdominis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Two-thirds of pregnant women suffer from low-back pain during pregnancy, which leads to negative effects on quality of everyday life. According to the literature, an 8- to 12-week program of adapted physical activity during pregnancy has proven its efficacy in treatment of low-back pain and functional disability. Stretching Postural is a nondynamic technique using muscular contractions and stretches that act mainly on the back and that can be practiced alone. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the effect of an 8-week program of standardized Stretching Postural postures in low-risk pregnant women suffering from low-back pain. STUDY DESIGN This was an open-label, randomized, controlled trial in 1 French university hospital. Women with a singleton low-risk pregnancy between 15 and 32 weeks of gestation and with back, lumbar, or sacroiliac pain were randomly assigned (1:1) to either undergo an 8-week program of standardized Stretching Postural with basic advice (intervention group) or to receive basic advice only (control group). Both groups received ergonomic advice and encouragement to practice physical activity. The primary endpoint was the pain assessment at 8 weeks (defined by the mean pain level estimated by women in the previous week, scored on a numeric scale from 0 to 10). Secondary endpoints were pain after 4 weeks of follow-up, quality of life (12-item Short Form Survey), satisfaction (Patient Global Impression of Change), and delivery outcomes. The main analysis was intention-to-treat. RESULTS From January 2019 to August 2020, 60 women were randomized: 30 were assigned to the intervention group and 30 to the control group. The mean level of pain at 8 weeks was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group (1.6±1.4 vs 4.1±2.2; P<.01). The mean 12-item Short Form Survey scores were significantly higher in the posture group than in the control group (Physical Component Score, 45.7±7.8 vs 37.4±8.5; P<.01; Mental Component Score, 54.3±5.8 vs 50.4±7.1; P=.04), and the Patient Global Impression of Change score was also significantly higher (6.1±1.5 vs 3.9±2.3; P<.01). No adverse effects were found. CONCLUSION Stretching Postural appears to be a safe and efficient nondrug therapy to treat low-back pain during low-risk pregnancy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review and meta-analysis study was conducted to reveal the effect of Pilates on pain during pregnancy and labor. METHODS The PubMed, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, Ovid, EBSCO, CINAHL Plus, Cochrane Library databases, and Google Scholar databases were used to access the articles published in international journals, and the Dergipark, Turkish Clinics, and ULAKBİM databases were scanned to access the articles published in national journals between October 30 and November 30, 2022. The data were analyzed using Review Manager 5.4. RESULTS This study included four articles. According to the meta-analysis results, it was elucidated that Pilates exercise during pregnancy was not statistically effective in reducing pain during pregnancy (Z=0.61, p=0.54), but it was effective in reducing pain intensity during labor (Z=11.20, p<0.00001). CONCLUSION This study concluded that Pilates exercise was not effective in reducing pain during pregnancy but was effective in reducing labor pain. There is a need for more research on the subject. Abstract
Objective This scoping review aimed to identify studies that analyzed movement variability in Pilates. Following a systematic approach to mapping evidence on this topic would highlight concepts, theories, sources, and knowledge gaps in this area. Methods This review used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) criteria for the selection, reading, and analysis of studies in this area. We searched five literature databases (Web of Science, SCOPUS, library catalog of the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education of the University of Coimbra-EBSCO Discovery Services, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar). Eligible articles contained the word "Pilates," and the human movement variability was analyzed. Any type of study (except reviews) could be eligible and must have been published between 1 January 2002 and 30 November 2022, in Portuguese, Spanish, French, or English. Results Our search identified five eligible entries. Only one study used the Pilates method in its intervention, pointing to a more significant variability of hip-knee coordination, suggesting more diversified coordination patterns, and maintaining the variability of the angular position of the joint. Conclusion Very few studies have examined movement variability in Pilates, and only one applied an ecological framework.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The positive effects of Pilates and slow-controlled breathing exercises on health are examined in different studies. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of 10-week equipment-based Pilates, slow-controlled breathing exercises, and a combination of both on heart rate variability (HRV), pulmonary function, and body composition (BC) in young adult healthy women with normal BMI. METHODS Forty female participants were assigned to either equipment-based Pilates group (PG), slow-controlled breathing exercise group (BG), equipment-based Pilates + breathing exercise group (PBG), and control groups (CG). Equipment-based Pilates exercise consists of training for two days a week and 50 min per day, and breathing exercises were done twice a week for 15 min a day for 8 weeks. In addition, PBG performed a 15-minute breathing exercise after each Pilates session. Pilates sessions were created with Reformer, Cadillac, Ladder Barrel, Chair Barrel, and Spine Corrector. On the other hand, breathing exercises were based on a controlled 5 s inhale and 5 s exhale cycles. RESULTS Before and after the implementation, pulmonary function, HRV, and BC parameters were measured. The body weight and BMI improved in PG and PBG, and the percent body fat decreased only in PBG (p < 0.05). Both PG and PBG noted significant changes in HRV indices SDSD, SDNN, TP, HF, and LF. However, the RMSSD was recorded higher in only PBG. Similar changes were found in pulmonary parameters. The FVC, FEV1, VC, IC, TV, MVV, and VE im-proved in PBG. PG showed increases in VC and TV. The only changes found in BG were PEF and ERV. CONCLUSIONS The finding highlights the ample effect of combined breathing and Pilates exercise on HRV, pulmonary function and body composition which has important implications for health promotion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of the major exercises to improve the psychological and physical functions of pregnant women is Pilate's exercises. The aim of this study is to collect evidence about Pilates exercise effects on many consequences in pregnant women, such as maternal and neonatal outcomes and obstetric outcomes. METHODS PubMed, Clinical Key, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science were scoured from their inception. Research comparing Pilates during pregnancy to other methods, or to the control was included. For randomized controlled trials (RCTs), The researcher utilized the Cochrane risk of bias tool; for non-RCTs, risk of bias tool to assess non-randomized studies of interventions, was used for cohort studies, and the national heart, lung, and blood institute tool. Meta-analysis was done using the Review manager 5.4. For continuous data, calculated the mean difference and 95% confidence interval (CI), and the risk ratio (RR) and 95% CI for dichotomous data. RESULTS Finally, 13 studies included with a total number of 719 pregnant women. The analysis showed that the Pilates group was significantly more likely to deliver vaginally than the control group (RR = 1.21, 95% CI [1.05 to 1.41], P value = .009). Women in the Pilates group were significantly lower than the control group to have Cesarean delivery (RR = 0.67, 95% CI [0.48-0.94], P value = .02). Moreover, Pilates-treated women were less likely to gain weight during pregnancy than control (mean difference = -3.48, 95% CI [-6.17 to -0.79], P value = .01). CONCLUSION Pilates exercise improved the outcomes of pregnant women. It decreases the rate of Cesarean delivery and the time of delivery. Moreover, Pilates has a role in decreasing weight gain in pregnant women. As a result, that may improve the pregnancy experience for women. However, more RCTs needed with larger sample sizes to assess the Pilates effect on neonatal outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disorder in the world and its incidence is rising, and one of the most frequent causes of pain, loss of function and disability in adults. AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Mat Pilates on health status, pain, stiffness, and functionality of older adult women with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS A randomized-controlled trial to preliminarily test an intervention protocol of Mat Pilates in older women with KOA on health status, pain, stiffness, and functionality. This study included 41 volunteers with age over 40 years, which mean was 52.1 ± 8.9 years, and were allocated into Mat Pilates and control groups. The protocol was developed to be performed in 60 min, twice a week; the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and the Medical Outcomes Study 36 (SF-36) were used to assess pain, to evaluate functionality and stiffness. RESULTS The Mat Pilates group significantly improved the functional capacity assessed by SF-36 (33.12 ± 22.03 to 69.37 ± 22.43, p < 0.05), and by WOMAC (29.75 ± 6.92 to 9.75 ± 9.35, p < 0.05). The pain domain also improved in Mat Pilates group assessed by SF-36 (39.50 ± 12.89 to 71.75 ± 18.66, p < 0.05) and by WOMAC (8.00 ± 2.56 to 2.75 ± 3.01, p < 0.05). The total score of WOMAC (41.75 ± 10.39 to 14.25 ± 13.88, p < 0.05), and the general health status assessed by SF-36 (59.44 ± 18.07 to 82.75 ± 12.03, p < 0.05) only improved for Mat Pilates group. No differences were observed in outcomes for the control group in both questionnaires. CONCLUSION Our results show that Mat Pilates protocol can improve the health status, pain, and functionality of older women with KOA.

Abstract
Objective To explore the effect of Pilates exercise nursing combined with nursing based on the theory of communication compliance and pelvic floor muscle training on bladder function and family function of patients after cervical cancer surgery. Methods The medical records of 96 postoperative cervical cancer patients treated in our hospital from November 2019 to May 2021 were selected as retrospective research objects and were divided into observation group and control group with 48 cases each according to the digital table method. The control group received nursing care based on the theory of communication compliance and pelvic floor muscle training, and the observation group received Pilates exercise therapy nursing on the basis of the control group. The differences in urinary retention, family intimacy and adaptability, bladder function, and family function evaluation scores were compared between the two groups. Results After nursing, the residual urine volume, urination time, and urination interval of the observation group were lower than those of the control group, while the self-resolving urination rate and urination volume of the observation group were higher than those of the control group, which was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Before nursing, the family intimacy and adaptability scores of the two groups of patients were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). After nursing, the family intimacy score, family adaptability score, and sexual function score of the observation group were significantly higher than the control group; the comparison was statistically significant (P < 0.05). After nursing, the bladder function recovery of the observation group was significantly better than that of the control group, which was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Before nursing, the comparison of family function evaluation between the two groups of patients was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). After nursing, the observation group's problem solving, communication, role, emotional response, emotional intervention, behavior control, and total functional scores were lower than those of the control group, which were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion Carrying out nursing care based on the theory of communication compliance with Pilates exercise therapy for patients after cervical cancer surgery has a good nursing effect improves the patient's family intimacy and adaptability and patient's urinary retention and bladder function. Moreover, Pilates exercise nursing is a postoperative treatment for cervical cancer which provides a certain reference for clinical care of patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to analyse the effect of an intervention with belly dance or mat Pilates on range of motion, self-esteem and depressive symptoms in women with breast cancer receiving hormone therapy. METHOD A randomized clinical trial of 52 participants, diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing adjuvant hormone therapy that were randomized and divided into three groups (1): Belly dance group, which received 16 weeks of Belly Dance classes 2) Mat Pilates group, that performed 16 weeks of Pilates intervention and (3) Control group, that received educational activities in the form of lectures and was invited to maintain its routine activities. The participants answered a questionnaire in which they contained the clinical and personal characteristics; quantification of the range of motion of the upper limbs using the Absolute Axis 360° digital goniometer; self-esteem by the Self-Esteem Scale (EAR) and depressive symptoms by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). All data was collected at two moments in the study, in the pre-intervention period (baseline) and at the end of the 16 weeks of intervention. RESULTS Only the variable range of motion variable showed significant results in all study groups (p = 0.025), with the Mat Pilates group having the best scores. Although not significant, the other study variables also improved after the intervention period. CONCLUSION Belly dance and the Mat Pilates can bring positive results in the range of movement of women undergoing adjuvant treatment of breast cancer, with the Pilates method being the one that most contributed to improvements in this variable.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fibromyalgia is a chronic clinical condition characterized by pain and other associated symptoms that have a negative impact on the quality of life of the affected person. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a core stability training physiotherapy program compared to an acupuncture treatment on quality of life, pain, joint stiffness, difficulty to work and depression of women with fibromyalgia. METHODS This was a single-blind, randomized clinical controlled trial. Women with fibromyalgia were randomized to a core stability physiotherapy program group (n = 45), an acupuncture treatment group (n = 45) and a control group (n = 45) for 13 weeks. Measurements were taken at baseline (week 0), post-intervention (week 6) and at follow-up (week 13). The primary outcome measure was quality of life (Spanish Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire). The secondary outcome measures were pain, joint stiffness, difficulty to work and depression (Visual Analogue Scale). RESULTS In total, 103 participants completed the study. The results, from a descriptive perspective, showed improvements in all the outcome measures in both intervention groups (physiotherapy and acupuncture) at weeks 6 and 13 in relation to week 0 and in comparison to the control group. Only the difficulty to work measure in the acupuncture group showed a slight decrease at week 13. In particular, mean (±SD) Spanish Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire score at 6 weeks was 62.89 ± 16.91 for the physiotherapy group, 62.5 ± 18.09 for the acupuncture group and 67.45 ± 17.07 for the control group. However, these improvements were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION Core stability-based physiotherapy and acupuncture showed non-significant improvements in quality of life, pain, joint stiffness, difficulty to work and depression in women with fibromyalgia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of Pilates compared with circuit-based exercise in reducing arthralgia in women during hormone therapy for breast cancer. DESIGN Single-blind randomized controlled trial, parallel. SETTING University hospital of Brasilia and Brazilian Association for Assistance to People with Cancer. PARTICIPANTS Sixty women with arthralgia were recruited. Eligibility criteria included women complaining of arthralgia during hormone therapy for breast cancer. The exclusion criteria were women with active cancer, lymphedema, limitations to physical exercise, or limitation to answer some questionnaires. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Primary: Pain. Secondary: Function, flexibility, and sleep quality. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and the end of the intervention (8 weeks) by the same blinded evaluator. INTERVENTION Sixty participants were randomly assigned 20 to each of the three groups: Pilates, circuit-based exercise, and control groups. Exercise was performed twice per week for 75 min, over a period of 8 weeks. Participants in the control group were instructed to continue their usual activities. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to verify the normality of the outcomes. Intergroup differences were calculated using Kruskal-Wallis test with post hoc Mann Whitney U testing and the parametric data between the three groups with ANOVA of repeated measures with Bonferroni post hoc. RESULTS The Pilates group demonstrated a significant difference in pain reduction compared to the circuit group (mean difference: -1.95 points, p = 0.020). CONCLUSION Pilates was more effective than circuit-based exercise in reducing arthralgia in women during hormone therapy for breast cancer. Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the quality of systematic reviews/meta-analyses (SR/MAs) on alternative exercise traditions in cancer care. Methods PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Ovid, EBSCOhost, WanFang Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and VIP Database were searched from their inception to June 30, 2020. The search used a combination of subject words and free words. The search terms included “Tai Chi,” “Qigong,” “Baduanjin,” “Yoga,” “Pilates,” “Cancer,” “Meta-analysis,” and “Systematic review.” Two researchers independently performed literature screening and data extraction and used AMSTAR scale and PRISMA statement to evaluate the methodology and the quality of the evidence. Results A total of 26 SR/MAs were included. The AMSTAR scale score was 5–10 points, with an average of 7.46±1.33 points. Overall, the methodological quality was considered to be moderate. The PRISMA list score was 13–24 points, with an average of 19.19±2.86 points. Among the papers evaluated, eight reports were relatively complete. A total of 15 papers indicated certain defects. A total of three papers showed relatively serious information defects. Conclusion Relative to the control group, alternative exercise traditions may be effective in improving the quality of life, anxiety, depression, distress, and fatigue of cancer patients. However, they may not necessarily improve patients’ sleep outcome, body mass index, and pain. During convalescence, cancer patients can be encouraged to start engaging in physical exercise, and professionals can develop appropriate exercise alternatives to ensure the expected effect of exercise while ensuring the safety of patients. The methodological quality of the systematic evaluations of the intervention effects of alternative exercise traditions on cancer patients is not satisfactory. Hence, focus should be directed to the improvement of the preliminary design scheme, publication status, literature retrieval, conflict of interest, and other aspects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pilates has growing appeal to pregnant women, as a form of exercise and relaxation. It is purported to benefit lumbo-pelvic stability, as well as motor control, strength and endurance. Some suggest that modified Pilates exercises may assist low risk pregnant women to enjoy a healthier pregnancy and prepare for the physical demands of labour and birth. The feasibility and safety of Pilates during pregnancy is poorly understood. We describe the protocol for a feasibility study designed to compare a midwife-led 6-week community-based Pilates intervention with standard antenatal care. METHODS A convenience sample of 30 low-risk pregnant women will be recruited from private obstetric clinics in Melbourne, Australia. Participants shall be randomly allocated to a six-week, 1-h weekly Pilates exercises group session or to usual care. The Pilates exercise class will have a warm-up phase, Pilates exercises, breathing exercises, and a cool down phase. Exercises have been designed to prepare for active birth. The primary outcome will be feasibility of implementation, determined by recruitment, retention, adherence and safety. Secondary outcomes include women's health (quality of life, pain, mobility for daily activities, lower extremity performance, abdominal separation, continence) and labour and birth outcomes (duration of first stage and second stage labour, analgesia used, mode of birth). Validated questionnaires will include the Quality of life 12-item short form survey; Pregnancy Mobility Index, and International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire. Lower extremity performance and abdominal separation will also be measured. DISCUSSION This trial will provide preliminary data regarding the feasibility and safety of Pilates exercise in healthy pregnant women. It will also provide preliminary outcome data used to inform the design of a future large scale, multi-centre RCT. TRIAL REGISTRATION This clinical trial has been registered with the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry 2016 (ACTRN12616000809437).

Abstract
Pilates exercise intervention program reduces maternal and neonatal outcomes. This intervention program improving postpartum depression and back pain. Strategies of this program is as a framework to improve reproductive health.
Background Pregnancy is a pleasure for most women, it is often considered as a stressful period with physiological, anatomical, biochemical, and psychological changes. Pilates exercise improved quality of life in women. Therefore, the present study targeted at designing an intervention program over the effects of Pilates on pregnancy outcomes among the pregnant women. Methods In this protocol, a clinical intervention will be designed in three phases. In the first phase of the study, a researcher-made checklist will be used to evaluate the pregnancy and neonatal outcomes based on the literature review. In the second phase, an intervention program of Pilates exercise will be conducted according to different studies and viewpoints of a panel of reproductive health and physical activity specialists. The exercises will include two sessions of 30 minutes per week for 12 weeks conducted under the supervision of a qualified trainer. The third phase of the intervention will include the pre-test and post-test using a standard questionnaire and a researcher-made checklist for the two intervention groups and one control group. Discussions The present study provides useful data regarding the design of a Pilates exercise intervention program for pregnant women with the aim of influencing pregnancy and neonatal outcomes, reducing depression, low back pain and improving maternal mental health. It can also reduce their medical and treatment costs. The strategies of this program could be important and cost effective, and therefore we hope that the success of such a program is a step forward in improving reproductive health status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was done to identify the effect of pilates exercises on the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. DESIGN A quasi experimental was conducted on university student with premenstrual syndrome. METHODS Population of the study included midwifery students with premenstrual syndrome at Istanbul University Faculty of Health Sciences (N = 286) and 50 of them became the sample (25 in experimental group and 25 in control group). Non-probablistic sampling method was used. While the students in experimental group were asked to practice the pilates exercises for three months, the students in control group were told to maintain their routine habits. At the end of the three months, premenstrual syndrome problem of experimental and control group was diagnosed and the effect of pilates on premenstrual syndrome was evaluated. Premenstrual Syndrome symptoms were evaluated through Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS). The high score received from PMSS shows that the symptoms are intensive. RESULTS It was seen that the students in the experimental and control group were similar in terms of their aspects which were individual, health and could affect premenstrual syndrome (p > 005). A statistical significant difference was not found between total scores and sub-dimension scores of PMSS in experimental and control group (p < 0.05). It was seen that PMSS total score of experimental group was significantly lower than that of control group (p < 0.001). When in-group comparisons were examined, it was identified that PMSS scores of control group did not change at the beginning and end of exercise, but PMSS score of experimental group at the end of exercise was lower than their score received at the beginning of exercise and, the difference was statistically significant to the highest degree (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION It was seen that the pilates exercises, which were practiced in this research, decreased the PMS symptoms considerably. In this regard, the pilates exercises have an important role in healing the PMS symptoms.

Abstract
Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for 60% of global deaths. Of these NCD-attributable deaths, about 80% are in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs). The role of exercise in major NCDs is evident; however, popular and cost-effective aerobic modes of exercise, such as walking, consistently do not meet minimum intensity guidelines for health improvement. Interestingly, low-cost resistance training (using callisthenics, Pilates, elastic tubing, etc.) has proven equally effective to conventional resistance training using weight machines in improving several health parameters related to NCDs, although their effectiveness in LMICs is not as well documented as in high-income countries (HICs). Objectives: This review aimed to examine low-cost approaches of resistance training to health promotion, NCD risk reduction, and NCD rehabilitation/management to mitigate the epidemic of NCDs in lower-resource settings. Methods: An electronic search was performed on the following databases from inception until December 2019: PubMed/Medline, Sport Discuss, Embase, Science Direct, Current Contents, CISTI Source, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, CINAHL EBM Reviews, and international e-catalogues. Results: Data on resistance training provision cost in low-resource settings indicates that it is not reasonable to use this mode of training in low-resource settings in the same way as it is used in high-resource ones. This review summarized some strategies which can be employed to ensure the delivery of all core resistance training components in low-resource settings. The data suggests that resistance training be adapted for delivery in non-clinical settings in LMICs. Conclusions: Program design variables of resistance training are similar in low- and well-resourced settings. However, only individuals with low-risk will be able to perform exercise without adverse consequences in home-based settings. Health care practitioners in LMICs should take an active role in promoting resistance training when promoting health, reducing NCD risk, and NCD rehabilitation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pilates training has several well-known benefits for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). However, its effect on functional balance is unclear. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of pilates exercises on the functional balance of male patients with MS. METHOD In the present parallel group randomized controlled trial, 30 men with MS were recruited from a local corrective exercise clinic in Tehran, Iran, and randomized into Pilates training group (N = 15), and control group (N = 15). At baseline, the age range was 25-40 years, and disability score index was 3-5. INTERVENTION The intervention group received Pilates exercises including the extension of the thoracic spine, abdominal strengthening, core stabilizing exercises, upper and lower limb, and posture exercises for 12 weeks. OUTCOMES Functional balance assessments including Berg's Balance Scale (BBS) test, Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and Functional Reach Test (FRT) were measured at the baseline and after 12 weeks. RESULTS At a 12-week follow-up, a significant between-group difference was observed in favor of the Pilates training group for the functional balance scores (P < 0.05), while no adverse or harmful events were reported in any group. CONCLUSION Pilates training increases the functional balance of MS patients, and decreases known risk factors for falls among the patients in this group, which may have the potential to reduce therapeutic costs and can be considered as a complementary therapeutic approach for physical therapists and corrective exercise experts.

Abstract
Movement therapy refers to a broad range of Eastern and Western mindful movement-based practices used to treat the mind, body, and spirit concurrently. Forms of movement practice are universal across human culture and exist in ancient history. Research demonstrates forms of movement therapy, such as dance, existed in the common ancestor shared by humans and chimpanzees, approximately 6 million years ago. Movement-based therapies innately promote health and wellness by encouraging proactive participation in one's own health, creating community support and accountability, and so building a foundation for successful, permanent, positive change.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Pilates exercises are popular for muscle conditioning among women. However, the effects on conditioning of healthy non-active adult women due to Pilates practicing are not fully explained. The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to assess the effects of equipment-based Pilates exercises on the percentage of body fat, weight, body mass index (BMI), functional capacity, and quality of life of adult healthy women. METHODS Seventy-eight non-active women were randomly assigned to 2 groups (Pilates or Control). The Pilates group performed a total of 16 exercise sessions (60 minutes each, performed twice a week for 8 consecutive weeks). The control group was instructed to perform no exercise. Percentage of body fat (DXA scans), weight, BMI, distance covered in the incremental shuttle walk test, maximal oxygen uptake (VO<inf>2max</inf>), and quality of life (SF-36 scores) were analyzed. RESULTS There were no significant between-group differences at baseline, but significant group-by-time interaction was observed for Pilates group postintervention. Higher distance covered (P=0.01), VO<inf>2max</inf> (P=0.04), and quality of life (P=0.04) were observed after the intervention compared to the control group. No differences were observed for body composition. CONCLUSIONS Two months of equipment-based Pilates training improved functional capacity and quality of life in healthy adult women.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The evidence regarding the effect of exercise, specifically Modified Pilates (MP), on pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) is limited. We report our pilot study using the MAPLe® device to assess the effect of MP type exercises on PFM electomyographic (EMG) activity and whether PFM contraction could be performed during specific MP exercises. METHODS The MAPLe® device was used to measure EMG activity of PFMs in healthy volunteers in different MP positions. Positions were divided into 'neutral', 'core' and 'plank' and EMG readings were taken at rest, during Valsalva and during active contraction. RESULTS Twenty volunteers were recruited. The median age was 35 (IQR 27-39.5) years. Higher EMG readings were seen in 'core' and 'plank' positions at rest. No position inhibited a conscious contraction and positions which engaged core muscles provoked an augmented contraction. CONCLUSION This is the first study to show that when MP positions are held for short periods of time, in asymptomatic women, the changes in PFM EMG are higher. This suggests that a stronger muscle contraction can be achieved when the core is co-contracted. Higher EMG readings were seen during 'core' and 'plank' positions; despite this, further activation with a conscious PFM contraction was still achievable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pilates is used increasingly in a variety of clinical settings. However, there is lack of clarity in the literature as to what is meant by the term. Teachers incorporating apparatus based on the designs of Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) into their practice refer to themselves as Comprehensive Teachers, and this group divides itself further into Classical and Contemporary practice. The aim of this research was to explore the meanings of these terms with Comprehensive Teachers and to develop a framework that reflects current views and practice. METHOD Online international survey of Pilates Teachers through closed Facebook forums. Open questions were used to elicit views of the definition and practice of Pilates, and how standards should be set across the sector. RESULTS Of 109 participants, 35% were based in the UK and 32% in the USA; 48% identified as Classical teachers, 32% as Contemporary, 5% as both and 15% as Matwork instructors. A thematic analysis of the qualitative data revealed agreement on the scope and content of Classical and Contemporary Comprehensive Pilates, however the discourse indicated there might be stereotyping about each other's practice. Classical teachers, for example, spoke of their own practice as authentic while Contemporary teachers used terms such as strict and inflexible for Classical practice. However, members of either group may incorporate both Classical and Contemporary approaches within their practice. We have designed a Pilates Teaching Framework to take into account the types of apparatus, the types of exercises and the order in which the exercises are executed. CONCLUSIONS A framework that emphasises Pilates teaching rather than teacher practice is proposed for consistency and clarity when describing Pilates in professional and public contexts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To conduct a systematic review to evaluate the effectiveness of Pilates intervention on physical function in children and youth. DATA SOURCES Six electronic databases were searched from inception to June 2018 using the term Pilates. STUDY SELECTION Articles were included if they (1) reported original data for a Pilates-only intervention; (2) involved children or youth aged up to 22 years; (3) reported a musculoskeletal, pain, or function study outcome. Searches identified 2565 papers and 11 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. DATA EXTRACTION The 2 authors independently screened and assessed all studies and any discrepancies were resolved by consensus. DATA SYNTHESIS Level of evidence was classified using the Oxford Centre for Evidence Based Medicine. Study quality was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database for randomized controlled trials and Risk of Bias in N-of-1 Trials scale for single case experimental design studies. Four studies were high quality, 3 were fair quality, and 4 were of low quality. Findings showed that Pilates does appear to improve flexibility (n=6); muscle strength, power and movement speed (n=3); postural control, orientation and balance (n=3); metabolic cost (n=1); functional ability (n=1) and health related quality of life (n=1) and reduce pain (n=2) in children with musculoskeletal pathology, the majority with a large effect size. Pilates content varied from group-based mat classes to individualized programs using specialized equipment. Intervention dose and frequency varied widely. CONCLUSIONS This is the first systematic review of the effect of Pilates intervention for children and youth. Research is in the preliminary stages; however, Pilates does appear to improve flexibility, strength and postural control, and reduce pain in children with musculoskeletal pathology. Further research is warranted to determine the potential effectiveness of Pilates for children and youth for various population groups and to develop comprehensive treatment guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many Pilates instructors believe that the method can produce significant improvement in the resistance of pelvic floor muscles, but it is known that about 49% of women who can contract this muscle do not perform an adequate contraction and cannot increase urethral closure pressure. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the response of the Pilates method in the function of the pelvic floor muscles, compared to the control group, in healthy women. SEARCH METHODS The following databases were searched from October to December 2016: PUBMED, SCIELO, LILACS, MEDLINE, WEB OF SCIENCE and CINAHL via PERIÓDICOS CAPES, without restriction of language and year of publication. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomized (RCTs), quasi-randomized, and non-randomized clinical trials assessing the effectiveness of the Pilates method for the fuction of pelvic floor muscles in healthy women were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two reviewers independently selected the studies, assessed the risk of bias and performed the data extraction. Primary outcomes were the method of evaluation of strength, function, coordination, and symmetry of contraction of the pelvic floor muscles. RESULTS 4434 articles were identified and 2 articles were selected to compose this review and the meta-analysis. No between-group difference was demonstrated for the pelvic floor muscle function as measured by perineometry (p = 0.32). CONCLUSIONS No evidence showed a modification of the function of pelvic floor muscles in healthy women practicing the Pilates method.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chronic cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes are the four major groups of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the main cause of mortality worldwide. Pilates has been described as an effective intervention to promote healthy behaviors and physical activity in people with chronic diseases. However, the evidence of its effects in NCDs have not been systematized. We investigated the effects of Pilates in the four major groups of NCDs. DESIGN A systematic review was performed. Searches were conducted on Cochrane Library, EBSCO, PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Studies were rated with the quality assessment tool for quantitative studies. As a meta-analysis was not possible to conduct, a best-evidence synthesis was used. RESULTS Twelve studies, mostly of moderate quality, were included with 491 participants (78.6% females; age range 13-70 years old) with breast cancer (n = 3), diabetes (n = 3), chronic stroke (2 years post stroke) (n = 2), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (n = 1), cystic fibrosis (n = 1), heart failure (n = 1) and arterial hypertension (n = 1). The best-evidence synthesis revealed strong evidence for improving exercise tolerance; moderate evidence for improving symptoms, muscle strength and health-related quality of life and limited or conflicting evidence on vital signs, metabolic parameters, body composition, respiratory function, functional status, balance, flexibility and social support. CONCLUSIONS Pilates should be considered for patients with NCDs, as it improves exercise tolerance. Future studies with robust methodologies are still needed to clarify its effectiveness on outcomes with moderate, limited or conflicting evidence and to establish the most suitable intervention protocol.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Breast cancer is the leading type of cancer causing death in women worldwide. The incidence of the disease is expected to grow worldwide due to the aging of the population and risk factors related to lifestyle behaviors. Considering the lifestyle of women with breast cancer before or after surgery, pilates exercise may be a complementary intervention additionally to standard treatment. OBJECTIVE To analyze the efficacy of pilates compared to other exercises and to no exercise for women with breast cancer diagnosis. METHOD We searched Medline via Pubmed, Embase via Ovid, Amed via EBSCO, Biosis via Ovid, Lilacs and the Cochrane Library for relevant publications until March 2017. The keywords used were pilates and "breast cancer," and only randomized controlled trials were included. Critical appraisal was done using Risk of Bias Tool and GRADE score for assessing the quality of evidence. RESULTS A total of five studies were included in our review. Our results demonstrate that pilates or home-based exercises are better than no exercise in each individual study. We observed significant improvements in the pilates groups compared to home-based exercises. Additionally, in the individual studies, we observed improvements in range of motion, pain and fatigue. CONCLUSION The evidence shows that pilates or home-based exercise should be encouraged to women with breast cancer.

Abstract
This study evaluated the influence of a Pilates exercise program on the quality of life (QOL) of sedentary elderly women. Twenty-four elderly women (aged 64.8 ± 3 years) participated in this study. Participants were divided into two groups: a Pilates Group (PG) and a Control Group (CG). The women in the PG performed 30-min sessions of Pilates (on the ground and using appliances) twice a week over six months. To evaluate the QOL, the SF-36 survey was used. The PG achieved significant improvements in 7 out of 8 domains in the survey: functional capacity (p = 0.00), physical aspects (p = 0.03), pain (p = 0.00), general health condition (p = 0.04), vitality (p = 0.02), social aspects (p = 0.03) and mental health (p = 0.05). Our results showed that implementation of a Pilates program can improve QOL of sedentary elderly women.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the effects of Pilates and walking on quality of life, depression, and anxiety levels. Methods: Sixty-three overweight/obese participants were randomly divided into: control (n = 20), walking (n = 21), and Pilates (n = 22) groups. Pilates and walking groups attended eight weeks of 60-minute exercise sessions three times per week. Quality of life, depression, and state- and trait-anxiety levels were evaluated before and after eight weeks of training. Results: Scores of quality of life, depression, and trait-anxiety improved in the Pilates and walking groups. State-anxiety levels improved only in the walking group. Conclusion: Pilates and walking positively impact quality of life, depression and anxiety. The Pilates method could be used as an alternative to improve mood disorders in overweight/obese individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of clinical Pilates exercises with those of the standard lymphedema exercises on lymphedema developing after breast cancer treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study comprised 60 female patients with a mean age of 53.2±7.7 years who developed lymphedema after having breast cancer treatment. The patients were randomized into two groups: the clinical Pilates exercise group (n=30), and the control group (n=30). Before, and at the 8th week of treatment, the following parameters were measured: the severity of lymphedema, limb circumferences, body image using the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale, quality of life with the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) quality of life questionnaire (QLQ-BR23), and upper extremity function using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) outcome measure. Both groups performed one-hour exercises three days a week for 8 weeks. RESULTS After treatment, the symptoms recovered significantly in both groups. Reductions in the severity of lymphedema, improvements in the social appearance anxiety scale scores, quality of life scores, and upper extremity functions scores in the clinical Pilates exercise group were greater than those in the control group. Clinical Pilates exercises were determined to be more effective on the symptoms of patients with lymphedema than were standard lymphedema exercises. CONCLUSIONS Clinical Pilates exercises could be considered a safe model and would contribute to treatment programs.

Abstract
[Purpose] This study attempted to examine whether Pilates is an effective exercise for
improving the postural alignment and health of middle-aged women. [Subjects and Methods]
The participants in this study were 36 middle-aged women (20 in the experimental group, 16
in the control group). The experimental group participated in Pilates exercise sessions
three times a week for 12 weeks. Body alignment and composition measurements before and
after applying the Pilates exercise program were performed with a body composition
analyzer and a three-dimensional scanner. [Results] Postural alignment in the sagittal and
horizontal planes was enhanced in the Pilates exercise group. Trunk alignment showed
correlations with body fat and muscle mass. [Conclusion] The Pilates exercises are
performed symmetrically and strengthen the deep muscles. Moreover, the results showed that
muscle mass was correlated with trunk postural alignment and that the proper amount of
muscle is critical in maintaining trunk postural alignment.

Abstract
[Purpose] The purpose of this single-center investigation was to study the impact of pregnancy on back pain and body posture. [Subjects] The subjects were 26 pregnant females. [Methods] Data were generated with a spine scanner (Diers(®) formetric 4D), trunk strength measurement (Diers(®) myoline), a numeric pain scale (0 to 10), and a biomechanical model. Parameters were compared during each trimester. [Results] The alteration in pain level at rest and lumbar lordosis angle in the females revealed a statistical trend during pregnancy. Spearman's test showed positive correlations between body weight and trunk inclination during the second trimester, and between body weight and the kyphosis angle in the third trimester. The trunk inclination and the kyphosis angle revealed a negative correlation in the third trimester. Based on our analysis, the highest moments and muscle strength must be expended in the third trimester. The actual muscle strength is greatest in the second trimester. [Conclusion] Pain at rest must be given greater attention in pregnant females, and their increasing lumbar kyphosis must be counteracted. Exercising the deep segmental muscles may serve as a preventive measure.

Abstract
After explaining that low back pain is considered the most common pregnancy complication, its pathogenesis, risk factors and the clinical characteristics of the very painful symptoms of this condition are described. As for its approach, it is stressed that it must be multidisciplinary, introducing very important preventive measures, including proper postural hygiene. For its treatment, the methods may be based on non-surgical or pharmacological interventions of a conservative non-invasive nature. Thus, physiotherapy, osteopathic manipulation, multimodal intervention (exercise and education), exercises performed in water environment, acupuncture, etc., have proven to be effective. Finally, it is emphasised that given the significant impact on their quality of life, different health professionals must be proactive and treat the lumbar disease in pregnant women.
