Self-perceived competency of infection control nurses based on Benner's framework: a nationwide survey in Korea

Efficacy of a virtual nursing simulation-based education to provide psychological support for patients affected by infectious disease disasters: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Virtual simulation-based education for healthcare professionals has emerged as a strategy for dealing with infectious disease disasters, particularly when training at clinical sites is restricted due to the risk of infection and a lack of personal protective equipment. This research evaluated a virtual simulation-based education program intended to increase nurses' perceived competence in providing psychological support to patients affected by infectious disease disasters.

METHODS

The efficacy of the program was evaluated via a randomized controlled trial. We recruited 104 nurses for participation in the study and allocated them randomly and evenly to an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was given a web address through which they could access the program, whereas the control group was provided with a web address that directed them to text-based education materials. Data were then collected through an online survey of competence in addressing disaster mental health, after which the data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences(version 23.0).

RESULTS

The analysis showed that the experimental group's disaster mental health competence (F = 5.149, p =.026), problem solving process (t = 3.024, p =.003), self-leadership (t = 2.063, p =.042), learning self-efficacy (t = 3.450, p =.001), and transfer motivation (t = 2.095, p =.039) significantly statistically differed from those of the control group.

CONCLUSIONS

A virtual nursing simulation-based education program for psychological support can overcome limitations of time and space. The program would also be an effective learning resource during infectious disease outbreaks.

Skills for generalist and specialist nurses working in the prevention and control of infections in Brazil

Objective

to define the competencies for the prevention and control of healthcare-related infections that should be developed by the generalist nurse and the specialist nurse in infection control in Brazil.

Method

the Delphi technique, developed in four rounds, was used. Thirty-one nurses and eight physicians participated in the study, with expertise in infection prevention and control. Data were collected using open-ended questionnaires, whose answers were treated using the content analysis technique. Structured instruments were used to evaluate the importance of each competency using a Likert scale. Data were analyzed and presented in a descriptive way, use of median and coefficient of variation.

Results

the competences were organized in 4 core, 14 generic and 17 specific, with name and description of each competency.

Conclusion

the definition of competencies for the prevention and control of healthcare-related infections is the first step to begin the rethinking of the teaching and learning process in the initial training of nurses. The data found in the present study may help to restructure education and support permanent education programs in health.

Infection preventionists' challenges in psychiatric clinical settings

BACKGROUND

Infection preventionists (IPs) play an important role in preventing health care-associated infections in a health care system. However, the limitations of the clinical setting and the unique characteristics of psychiatric patients could be barriers to effective infection prevention. The purpose of this study was to understand how IPs perceived their challenges and how these challenges negatively affect their infection prevention work in psychiatric clinical settings.

METHODS

A descriptive, qualitative research approach was used in this study. Thirteen Taiwanese psychiatric IPs were interviewed in semistructured interviews. Data were transcribed and then analyzed by thematic analysis.

RESULTS

This analysis identified 6 themes: (1) lack of preservice training in psychiatric infection control, (2) insufficient staffing in practice, (3) working within environmental limits, (4) patient noncompliance, (5) undervaluation of the importance of infection control by professionals, and (6) involvement of hospital administrators.

CONCLUSIONS

The implementation of effective infection prevention in psychiatric clinical settings may be strongly related to the factors of sufficient training and IP staffing while relying on collaboration among patients and clinical professionals and on the full support of administrators.

Predictor of Self-Perceived Nursing Competency Among New Nurses in Taiwan

The aim of this article is to identify the factors that predict self-perceived nursing competency among new nurses in Taiwan. This quantitative cross-sectional survey was performed with a convenience sample of 105 new nurses. Data were collected with questionnaires. Multiple linear regression showed perceived benefit of preceptor policies to nursing capacity and age accounted for 21.1% of the variance in dependent variables for self-perceived nursing competency importance. Satisfaction with current preceptor, satisfaction with current nursing job, and participation in interprofessional education conferences accounted for 22% of the variance in dependent variables for self-perceived nursing competency adequacy. The results could be a reference to design nursing education curricula that improve clinical training and retention of new nurses. J Contin Educ Nurs. 2017;48(3):129-137.
