Empowering nursing council implementation science: An appeal to action

BACKGROUND

In most hospitals, nursing councils are responsible for EBP implementation and evaluation. To enhance the perceived value of council participation by frontline nurses, administrators must promote the impact of council projects on healthcare outcomes.

PURPOSE

The purposes of this appeal to action are to describe the role of nursing councils in promoting IS and EBP, and to provide recommendations that enhance the value of IS and/or EBP councils to frontline nurses, thereby incentivizing participation on these councils.

METHODS

Nurse researchers from three metropolitan hospitals partnered with a medical librarian to recommend six strategies aimed at enhancing the perceived value of council participation. An argumentative review was conducted to support these strategies.

DISCUSSION

Recommendations are inclusion of methods experts on councils; support from nursing administrators in the development, implementation, and evaluation of projects; formation of partnerships with nursing academic departments; expansion of publication opportunities and availability; and connection of projects to measurable quality indicators.

CONCLUSION

Enhancing the perceived value of nursing councils by providing tools that optimize time and resource management can result in greater council participation and broader dissemination of IS evidence.

SUMAMOS EXCELENCIA® Project: Results of the Implementation of Best Practice in a Spanish National Health System (NHS)

The use of certain strategies for the implementation of a specific recommendation yields better results in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an evidence-based model using clinical audits (GRIP model), for the implementation of recommendations in pain and urinary incontinence management as well as fall prevention, in the Spanish National Health System during the period 2015-2018. A quasi-experimental study has been conducted. The subjects were patients treated in hospitals, primary care units and nursing home centers. There were measures related to pain, fall prevention and urinary incontinence. Measurements were taken at baseline and at months 3, 6, 9, and 12. The sample consisted of 22,114 patients. The frequency of pain assessment increased from 59.9% in the first cycle to a mean of 71.6% in the last cycle, assessments of risk of falling increased from 56.8% to 87.8% in the last cycle; and finally, the frequency of assessments of urinary incontinence increased from a 43.4% in the first cycles to a mean of 62.2% in the last cycles. The implementation of specific evidence-based recommendations on pain, fall prevention, and urinary incontinence using a model based on clinical audits improved the frequency of assessments and their documentation.

Research focus and thematic trends in magnet hospital research: A bibliometric analysis of the global publications

AIMS

The study aims to carry out a bibliometric analysis of the research on magnet hospital from 1988-2020.

DESIGN

A statistical and visualization bibliometric analysis was conducted between February-May 2020.

METHODS

The information was extracted from Web of Science by the topic advanced search strategy. HistCite-Pro, Excel, GunnMap, BibExcel and VOSviewer were used to extract, integrate and visualize the bibliometric information. Furthermore, the research contents of the core-authors were explored and summarized by reviewing all the published articles.

RESULTS

Articles (N = 396) published in 107 journals were retrieved in the Web of Science from 1988-2020. The USA (N = 319) and University of Pennsylvania (N = 38) were the most productive country and institution respectively. Author co-citation and bibliographic-coupling network analysis identified that Aiken, Kramer, Laschinger, Schmalenberg, Lake and Johantgen were the major contributors and leaders in this field. According to the research content of the main contributors and keyword co-occurrence analysis result, the research focus could be divided into four parts: the mechanism leading to the outcomes differences for magnet hospital, the evidence-based practice, the outcomes comparison between magnet hospital and non-magnet hospital and the practice environment.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric study offered a comprehensive overview of current study status of magnet hospital and this area has been drawn increasing attention over the years. However, the research on magnet hospital is still relative limited and needs to be paid more attention, especially in developing countries.

IMPACT

This study showed the most contributed countries, journals, institutions, authors and the main themes related to magnet hospital, which would help researchers find potential partners, optimize and deepen future research, such as enhancing the magnet hospital research in developing countries, improving the evidence-based research and considering the impact caused by different culture. Furthermore, this study can also give suggestions for magnet hospital policy makers.
