Abstract
This study was to describe the cognitive function status in patients with depressive disorder and to construct a nomogram model to predict the risk factors of cognitive impairment in these patients. From October 2019 to February 2021, a total of 141 patients with depressive disorder completed the survey in two hospitals. The Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) was used with a cutoff score of 26 to differentiate cognitive impairment. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify independent risk factors. A nomogram was then constructed based on the results of the multivariable logistic regression analysis. The patients had an average MoCA score of 23.99 ± 3.02. The multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that age (OR: 1.096, 95% CI: 1.042-1.153, p < 0.001), education (OR: 0.065, 95% CI: 0.016-0.263, p < 0.001), depression severity (OR: 1.878, 95% CI: 1.021-3.456, p = 0.043), and sleep quality (OR: 2.454, 95% CI: 1.400-4.301, p = 0.002) were independent risk factors for cognitive impairment in patients with depressive disorder. The area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves was 0.868 (95% CI: 0.807-0.929), indicating good discriminability of the model. The calibration curve of the model and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test (p = 0.571) demonstrated a well-fitted model with high calibration. Age, education, depression severity, and sleep quality were found to be significant predictors of cognitive function. A nomogram model was developed to predict cognitive impairment in patients with depressive disorder, providing a solid foundation for clinical interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine whether objective sleep parameters are associated with cognitive function (CF) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) with chronic insomnia (CI) and whether the severity of these disorders is related to CF. METHOD Thirty patients with MDD with CI attending a tertiary care institution underwent two consecutive nights of polysomnographic (PSG) recording and a battery of neuropsychological tests, which included episodic memory, sustained attention, working memory, and executive function. The severity of MDD and CI was assessed by clinical scales. We examined the relationship between PSG parameters and CF, as well as whether the severity of the disorders is related to CF. RESULTS Linear regression analysis revealed that total sleep time (TST) was positively associated with higher learning and recall of episodic memory, as well as better attention. Slow-wave sleep (SWS) showed a positive association with better working memory. Furthermore, wake after sleep onset (WASO) was negatively associated with episodic memory and lower attention. No significant relationships were found between the severity of MDD or CI with CF. CONCLUSION Both sleep duration and depth are positively associated with several aspects of CF in patients with MDD with CI. Conversely, a lack of sleep maintenance is negatively related to CF in these patients. These findings could help identify modifiable therapeutic targets to reduce CF impairment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fatigue and sleep disturbances are important symptoms of anxiety and mood disorders (AMD). Studies about the relationship between these variables usually rely on self-report assessments. Therefore, the aim of our exploratory study was to investigate the independent correlations between subjective and objective fatigue and sleep characteristics in individuals with AMD. METHODS In sum, 233 individuals with AMD attending a stress-related disorders day care unit (78.5 % females, mean age 39.0 years old) participated in a cross-sectional study. Participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index self-report questionnaires, as well as an exercise capacity workload test for assessing objective fatigue and polysomnography monitoring for evaluation of sleep structure. RESULTS In individuals with AMD, exercise capacity workload was associated with lower percent of stage 1 sleep (β = - 0.17, p = 0.006), REM latency (β = -0.13, p = 0.042), and wake after sleep onset (β = -0.12, p = 0.039). General fatigue was associated with a higher percent of body movements (β = 0.12, p = 0.047), as well as mental fatigue was associated with a higher percent of body movements (β = 0.13, p = 0.029), and a higher score on the PSQI (β = 0.21, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Objective sleep characteristics were associated with objective assessment of fatigue, while subjective sleep quality was associated with subjectively assessed mental fatigue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently present with sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether cognitive impairment is more severe in MDD patients with insomnia, and the underlying neural mechanisms. METHODS A total of 41 MDD patients with insomnia and 43 MDD patients without insomnia were recruited. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to assess changes in oxyhemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) concentrations in the brain of patients while performing a verbal fluency task (VFT). Sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), cognitive function by the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), and severity of depression by the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD). RESULTS Compared to MDD patients without insomnia, those with insomnia had lower scores on the RBANS total and immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional, and delayed memory subscales, as well as lower oxy-Hb concentrations in the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and bilateral medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC).Further correlation analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between the RBANS total score in all brain regions except left mPFC in MDD patients with insomnia(all p < 0.05). Further multiple linear regression showed that Oxy-Hb concentrations of left DLPFC were independently associated with RBANS total score. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that MDD patients with insomnia have more cognitive impairment, which is associated with impaired frontal brain activity. Our findings may provide new insights to understand the underlying neural mechanisms of both disorders MDD patients and provide potential clinical value for developing treatment strategies for insomnia in MDD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairment experienced by people with bipolar disorders (BD) or major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with impaired psychosocial function and poorer quality of life. Sleep disturbance is another core symptom of mood disorders which may be associated with, and perhaps worsen, cognitive impairments. The aim of this systematic review was to critically assess the relationship between sleep disturbance and cognitive impairment in mood disorders. METHODS In this systematic review, relevant studies were identified using electronic database searches of PsychINFO, MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science. FINDINGS Fourteen studies were included; eight investigated people with BD, five investigated people with MDD, and one included both people with MDD and people with BD. One study was an intervention for sleep disturbance and the remaining thirteen studies used either a longitudinal or cross-sectional observational design. Ten studies reported a significant association between subjectively measured sleep disturbance and cognitive impairment in people with MDD or BD after adjusting for demographic and clinical covariates, whereas no such association was found in healthy participants. Two studies reported a significant association between objectively measured (actigraphy or polysomnography) sleep abnormalities and cognitive impairment in mood disorders. One study of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia modified for BD (CBTI-BD) found an association between improvements in sleep and cognitive performance in BD. INTERPRETATION There is preliminary evidence to suggest a significant association between sleep disturbance and cognitive impairment in mood disorders. These findings highlight the need for further research of sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment in people with mood disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This research aims explored the sleep disorder (SD) role in major depressive disorder (MDD), and the SD influencing their cognition. METHODS 372 MDD patients and 457 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. RESULTS Patients increased a 38.88 times SD risk compared with HCs. In patients, visuospatial/constructional score was lower in SD than non-SD, and PSQI score was negatively associated with visuospatial/constructional score of SD. In SD and non-SD, RBANS scores were lower in MDD than HCs, excepted for visuospatial/constructional in non-SD. CONCLUSION The SD as a MDD risk factor, has more serious visuospatial/constructional impairment alleviated via improving sleep/depression in patients.

Abstract
Restorative sleep is a commonly used term but a poorly defined construct. Few studies have assessed restorative sleep in nationally representative samples. We convened a panel of 7 expert physicians and researchers to evaluate and enhance available measures of restorative sleep. We then developed the revised Restorative Sleep Questionnaire (REST-Q), which comprises 9 items assessing feelings resulting from the prior sleep episode, each with 5-point Likert response scales. Finally, we assessed the prevalence of high, somewhat, and low REST-Q scores in a nationally representative sample of US adults (n= 1,055) and examined the relationship of REST-Q scores with other sleep and demographic characteristics. Pairwise correlations were performed between the REST-Q scores and other self-reported sleep measures. Weighted logistic regression analyses were conducted to compare scores on the REST-Q with demographic variables. The prevalence of higher REST-Q scores (4 or 5 on the Likert scale) was 28.1% in the nationally representative sample. REST-Q scores positively correlated with sleep quality (r=0.61) and sleep duration (r=0.32), and negatively correlated with both difficulty falling asleep (r=-0.40) and falling back asleep after waking (r=-0.41). Higher restorative sleep scores (indicating more feelings of restoration upon waking) were more common among those who were: ≥60 years of age (OR=4.20, 95%CI: 1.92-9.17); widowed (OR=2.35, 95%CI:1.01-5.42), and retired (OR=2.02, 95%CI:1.30-3.14). Higher restorative sleep scores were less frequent among those who were not working (OR=0.36, 95%CI: 0.10-1.00) and living in a household with two or more persons (OR=0.51,95%CI:0.29-0.87). Our findings suggest that the REST-Q may be useful for assessing restorative sleep.

Abstract
Non-pharmacological treatment of hospital patients with sleeping problems - the nurse perspective Abstract. BACKGROUND Elderly patients suffer from sleep disturbances during hospitalization. These patients often receive hypnotics and sedatives; despite of the known risks and although non-pharmacological treatments are available. AIM The study investigates the experiences of nurses when using non-pharmacological treatments for elderly patients with sleeping problems. METHODS Semi-structured interviews with 13 nurses from a general hospital were analyzed according to Mayring's qualitative content analysis. RESULTS Nurses used a variety of non-pharmacological treatments for elderly inpatients with sleeping problems: (1) structural measures (regulation of temperature and light), (2) organizational measures (more time for conversation during the nightshift), (3) nursing measures (asking about night-time routines) and (4) household remedies. From the nurses' perspective, the more intensive contact required when applying non-pharmacological treatments can lead to higher patient satisfaction and a lower bell frequency during the night shift. Barriers result from limited time and personnel, a lack of standards and individual patient needs. CONCLUSION Nurses know several kinds of non-pharmacological treatments to help elderly inpatients sleep better. A lack of resources as well as a lack of professional consensus about the treatment of temporary sleeping disturbances can be an obstacle to their use. A professional climate should restrict the use of drugs for sleeping problems as far as possible.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Adolescence is a period of adaptation to social, hormonal, and physical changes. Because of these changes, adolescents are at risk for depression and suicidal thoughts. Female adolescents tend to be more sensitive to hormonal and emotional changes. Although the reciprocal relationship among depression, poor sleep quality, and suicide has been studied, whether decreased sleep time leads to depression-mediated suicide or induces suicide itself remains to be determined. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze (using a path analysis) the indirect (i.e., due to depression) and direct effects of sleep on suicidal ideation for female adolescents. METHODS We use nationally representative data from the Korean juvenile health behavior online survey to analyze the sleep effects on suicidal ideation. A total of 12,046 Korean female adolescents were included in this study. We analyzed data from the juvenile health behavior online survey (2017) conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and identified variables that could affect the mental health of female adolescents. A path analysis was performed to determine the direct role of sleep in suicidal ideation. RESULTS Decreased sleep was one of the several risk factors for suicidal ideation. Unexpectedly, after controlling for other risk factors including depression and socioeconomic factors, insufficient sleep was found to have direct effects on suicidal ideation. The indirect effect of insufficient sleep on suicidal ideation was mediated by depression. CONCLUSION Sleep is a modifiable factor that could reduce the suicide rate among female adolescents and could be targeted through public health prevention efforts.
