Depression, positive thinking, personal and social resourcefulness among caregivers of persons with autism spectrum disorders

Resourcefulness as a mediator in the relationship between self-perceived burden and depression among the young and middle-aged stroke patients: A cross-sectional study

Objective

To explore the relationships among self-perceived burden, resourcefulness and depression, and to study further whether resourcefulness mediates the effects of self-perceived burden on depression in young and middle-aged stroke patients.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1050 young and middle-aged stroke patients. We used a general demographic questionnaire, Self-Perceived Burden Scale (SPBS), Resourcefulness Scale© (RS) and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) to assess self-perceived burden, resourcefulness, and depression. Statistical methods included correlation analysis, multiple linear regression, and structural equation model.

Results

1018 valid questionnaires were collected with a response rate of 96.95%. Resourcefulness was inversely correlated with self-perceived burden (r = -0.367, p < 0.01) and depression (r = -0.625, p < 0.01); Self-perceived burden was positively associated with depression (r = 0.698, p < 0.01). Multiple linear regression analyses showed that resourcefulness mediated the effects of self-perceived burden on depression; The structural equation model demonstrated that the resourcefulness mediated the relationship between self-perceived burden and depression.

Conclusion

Resourcefulness is a mediator between self-perceived burden and depression. Medical staff adjust the psychological state of stroke patients based on the theory of resourcefulness, thereby improving their problem-solving ability, actively encouraging patients to establish problem-solving strategies, providing disease rehabilitation knowledge and skills, and promoting the improvement of resourcefulness level.

Social support mediates the relationship between dispositional gratitude and psychological distress in caregivers of autistic children

Grateful caregivers report lower levels of psychological distress. Social support, engendered by gratitude and buffering against stress, might mediate this effect. Here we explored whether the protective psychological effect of dispositional gratitude might be mediated by increased social support. A sample of 126 caregivers of autistic children completed questionnaires assessing dispositional gratitude, social support and psychological distress. Gratitude inversely predicted psychological distress, as did social support after adjusting for gratitude. Gratitude positively predicted social support. Gratitude no longer predicted psychological distress after adjusting for social support. Indirect effects analysis revealed the gratitude-distress relationship occurred indirectly via social support. Grateful caregivers reported higher levels of social support, and this predicted lower psychological distress. Gratitude, relatively stable as a disposition, has a state component that is sensitive to change, and healthcare professionals might do well to recommend gratitude enhancing interventions for caregivers of autistic children.

Resourcefulness and stress among hospice and palliative nurses: the role of positive thinking

Background: Among healthcare professionals, hospice and palliative nurses have a high risk of experiencing work stress. However, little attention has been paid to protective factors that could mitigate the impact of daily stressors on hospice and palliative nurses. Aim: This study aimed to determine whether resourcefulness and positive thinking have a negative association with perceived stress among hospice and palliative nurses, and whether positive thinking moderates or mediates the link between resourcefulness and stress among hospice and palliative nurses. Method: A cross-sectional, correlational design was used to address these two aims. Results: A convenience sample of 86 hospice and palliative nurses (95% female) in the US completed an online survey. The results demonstrated that positive thinking and resourcefulness are useful predictors of stress reduction and help mitigate the effects of stress. Positive thinking did not mediate the relationship between resourcefulness and stress. Conclusion: Moderation analysis suggests that social resourcefulness may be especially helpful in reducing stress among hospice and palliative nurses with a low level of positive thinking.

Understanding maternal resilience; Lesson learnt from rural mothers caring for a child with a chronic health condition

AIM

This study aimed to understand the lived experience of rural mothers caring for a child with a chronic health condition and to understand their perspectives on the support, services and resources they identify as necessary to effectively manage caregiving.

BACKGROUND

Maternal caregivers in rural areas experience difficulty accessing specialist health care for their child and can also experience geographical and social isolation. Understanding the factors that enable these maternal caregivers to overcome the challenges and adversities faced is crucial to help nurses identify and facilitate avenues for support and resources.

DESIGN

This study employed a phenomenological design. The study is reported in line with Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research guidelines (COREQ).

METHODS

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 maternal caregivers in rural New South Wales, Australia, who had at least one child with a chronic health condition aged between 2-18 years. Data were collected from March to June 2018. Thematic analysis was used to develop a thematic framework. This paper reports on one of the major themes identified in this research, specifically maternal resilience.

RESULTS

Participants demonstrated maternal resilience by creating meaningful social connections, cultivating networks, developing problem-solving skills, enhancing their self-efficacy and finding a sense of purpose through hope and optimism. These strategies provide nurses insight into how some rural women overcome adversities associated with their maternal labour required in caring for a child with a chronic health condition.

CONCLUSION

This study found that participants overcame the challenges related to their caregiving work, emerging as resilient caregivers. Understanding maternal resilience assists nurses to provide the services rural mothers in Australia need to care for their child with a CHC.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Findings from this study provide insight into the experiences of rural maternal caregivers of children with a chronic health condition and identify the strategies they adopt to overcome caregiver challenges. Understanding these strategies allows nurses to improve care and support for rural mothers using a strength-based approach to build maternal resilience.

Factors That Influence Women's Symptoms of Postpartum Depression After Discharge of Their Preterm Infants From the NICU

OBJECTIVE

To examine resourcefulness, perception of child vulnerability, and stress in relation to symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD) in women after discharge of their preterm infants from the NICU.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study.

SETTING

An urban NICU follow-up clinic, a pediatric office in the northeastern United States, and an online NICU parent support group.

PARTICIPANTS

Seventy-four women who gave birth to preterm infants who were discharged home from the NICU.

METHODS

The participants completed a demographic data questionnaire, the Resourcefulness Scale, Child Vulnerability Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. I examined the relationships among these data using correlational analysis and hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis.

RESULTS

Perception of child vulnerability and stress were predictors of symptoms of PPD; these variables accounted for 9% (p = .001) and 18% (p < .001) of the variation in symptoms of PPD, respectively. Although resourcefulness initially predicted PPD, it was no longer significant when controlling for demographic variables in the final regression analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

These results supported previously reported findings on the effects of women's perceptions of their child's vulnerability and stress on symptoms of PPD. However, the findings are not consistent with those of previous research regarding the inverse relationship between resourcefulness and symptoms of PPD. Nurses can implement interventions for women regarding perceptions of child vulnerability and stress to decrease symptoms of PPD after their preterm infant's discharge from the NICU.

Exploring the Moderating Role of Benefit Finding on the Relationship Between Child Problematic Behaviours and Psychological Distress in Caregivers of Children with ASD

Caregivers of children with ASD often find benefits associated with their caregiving role, and benefit finding predicts lower distress. Child problematic behaviours (CPB), which positively predict caregivers' distress, are perceived to be being less problematic, or more manageable, by caregivers who find benefits. Benefit finding therefore might mitigate the negative psychological impact of CPB. A sample of n = 158 caregivers of children with ASD completed an online survey assessing benefit finding, CPB, and psychological distress. CPB positively, and benefit finding negatively, predicted caregivers' distress. Moderation effects however were not observed. Findings implicate increased CPB and lower benefit finding as risk factors for caregivers' psychological distress. Findings provide clearly definable targets for intervention.
