Behavioural and physiological responses of laying hens to automated monitoring equipment

High-resolution ethograms, accelerometer recordings, and behavioral time series of Japanese quail

Although many small vertebrates are capable of performing high-speed behaviors, most studies continue to focus on low-resolution temporal scales (>>1 s). Herein, we present video-recordings, behavior time series, and the computer software for video-analysis of Japanese quail within social groups. Home-boxes were monitored using both top and side video-cameras. High-resolution ethograms were developed for analyses. Pairs of females were assigned as either controls or using one of two methods for attachment of an accelerometer (patch or backpack). Behavior was recorded during 1 h on the first 2-days, sampled at 1 s intervals (days 1 and 2). On day 8, an unfamiliar male was placed in the home-box and its behavior was recorded during the first 10 min, sampled every 1/15 s. Male accelerometer recordings were also obtained. Video-recordings and resulting detailed high-resolution behavioral time series are valuable for reuse in comparative studies regarding the temporal dynamics of behavior within social environments. In addition, they are necessary for the assessment of novel machine learning algorithms that could be used for deciphering the output of accelerometer recordings.

Farmers' Perspectives of the Benefits and Risks in Precision Livestock Farming in the EU Pig and Poultry Sectors

More efficient livestock production systems are necessary, considering that only 41% of global meat demand will be met by 2050. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic crisis has clearly illustrated the necessity of building sustainable and stable agri-food systems. Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) offers the continuous capacity of agriculture to contribute to overall human and animal welfare by providing sufficient goods and services through the application of technical innovations like digitalization. However, adopting new technologies is a challenging issue for farmers, extension services, agri-business and policymakers. We present a review of operational concepts and technological solutions in the pig and poultry sectors, as reflected in 41 and 16 European projects from the last decade, respectively. The European trend of increasing broiler-meat production, which is soon to outpace pork, stresses the need for more outstanding research efforts in the poultry industry. We further present a review of farmers' attitudes and obstacles to the acceptance of technological solutions in the pig and poultry sectors using examples and lessons learned from recent European projects. Despite the low resonance at the research level, the investigation of farmers' attitudes and concerns regarding the acceptance of technological solutions in the livestock sector should be incorporated into any technological development.

Setting the stage to tag "n" track: a guideline for implementing, validating and reporting a radio frequency identification system for monitoring resource visit behavior in poultry

Passive radio frequency identification (RFID) can advance poultry behavior research by enabling automated, individualized, longitudinal, in situ, and noninvasive monitoring; these features can usefully extend traditional approaches to animal behavior monitoring. Furthermore, since the technology can provide insight into the visiting patterns of tagged animals at functional resources (e.g., feeders), it can be used to investigate individuals' welfare, social position, and decision-making. However, the lack of guidelines that would facilitate implementing an RFID system for such investigations, describing it, and establishing its validity undermines this technology's potential for advancing poultry science. This paper aims to fill this gap by 1) providing a nontechnical overview of how RFID functions; 2) providing an overview of the practical applications of RFID technology in poultry sciences; 3) suggesting a roadmap for implementing an RFID system in poultry behavior research; 4) reviewing how validation studies of RFID systems have been done in farm animal behavior research, with a focus on terminologies and procedures for quantifying reliability and validity; and 5) suggesting a way to report on an RFID system deployed for animal behavior monitoring. This guideline is aimed mainly at animal scientists, RFID component manufacturers, and system integrators who wish to deploy RFID system as an automated tool for monitoring poultry behavior for research purposes. For such a particular application, it can complement indications in classic general standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 18000-63) and provide ideas for setting up, testing, and validating an RFID system and a standard for reporting on its adequacy and technical aspects.

Individual Monitoring of Activity and Lameness in Conventional and Slower-Growing Breeds of Broiler Chickens Using Accelerometers

Accelerometers are increasingly being investigated to detect animal behavior as a method for monitoring individual welfare that overcomes manual challenges associated with time, resource, and discrete sampling. We investigated the effects of broiler chicken hybrid (hereafter breed) and weight on accelerometer activity (activityA; calculated as percentage of time spent active (%)) and its association with lameness as a major broiler welfare concern. Accelerometers were attached to birds of different breeds on between 2 and 4 occasions from 26 to 30 days old (conventional breed CNV) and 26 to 49 days old (two slower-growing breeds SGH; SGN). At 2.2 kg, lameness was scored using a 6-point gait scoring system (0: unaffected to 5: severely lame). Linear mixed effects models and breed-stratified generalized linear models together with a random-effect meta-analysis were used for data analyses. ActivityA was lower in faster-growing, heavier birds compared to slower-growing, lighter birds, showing overall consistency with previous behavioral research, but did not vary linearly with gait score. Accelerometers offer the potential for simple broad-scale continuous monitoring of broiler chicken activity behavior that requires limited data processing. Exploration of the ability of accelerometers to capture more subtle and specific changes in behavioral patterning, such as non-linear acceleration with gait score that could indicate early development of lameness, warrants further investigation.

Impact of Body-worn Sensors on Broiler Chicken Behavior and Agonistic Interactions

Technology, like body-worn sensors, enables data collection from similar-looking individuals in large groups but may alter behavior. We aimed to evaluate the impact of body-worn sensors on broiler behavior. Broilers were housed in 8 pens (10 birds/m2). At 21 days-old, 10 birds/pen were fitted with a harness contained a sensor (HAR), while the remaining 10-birds were unharnessed (NON). Behaviors were recorded on days 22-26 using scan sampling (126 scans/day for 5 days). Percent of birds performing behaviors were calculated daily for each group (HAR-or-NON), and agonistic interactions were identified based on birds involved (two NON-birds (N-N), NON-aggressor to HAR-recipient (N-H), HAR-aggressor to NON-recipient (H-N), or two HAR-birds (H-H)). HAR-birds performed locomotory behavior and explored less often than NON-birds (p<0.05). Consummatory behavior was unaffected by treatment on any day (p>0.05). Agonistic interactions occurred more often between NON-aggressor and HAR-recipient birds than other categories on days 22 and 23 (p<0.05). HAR-broilers showed no behavioral differences when compared to NON-broilers after 2 days; thus, a similar acclimation period is required before using body-worn sensors to evaluate broiler welfare without altering behavior.

Classification of broiler behaviours using triaxial accelerometer and machine learning

Understanding broiler behaviours provides important implications for animal well-being and farm management. The objectives of this study were to classify specific broiler behaviours by analysing data from wearable accelerometers using two machine learning models, K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). Lightweight triaxial accelerometers were used to record accelerations of nine 7-week-old broilers at a sampling frequency of 40 Hz. A total of 261.6-min data were labelled for four behaviours - walking, resting, feeding and drinking. Instantaneous motion features including magnitude area, vector magnitude, movement variation, energy, and entropy were extracted and stored in a dataset which was then segmented by one of the six window lengths (1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 20 s) with 50% overlap between consecutive windows. The mean, variation, SD, minimum and maximum of each instantaneous motion feature and two-way correlations of acceleration data were calculated within each window, yielding a total of 43 statistic features for training and testing of machine learning models. Performance of the models was evaluated using pure behaviour datasets (single behaviour type per dataset) and continuous behaviour datasets (continuous recording that involved multiple behaviour types per dataset). For pure behaviour datasets, both KNN and SVM models showed high sensitivities in classifying broiler resting (87% and 85%, respectively) and walking (99% and 99%, respectively). The accuracies of SVM were higher than KNN in differentiating feeding (88% and 75%, respectively) and drinking (83% and 62%, respectively) behaviours. Sliding window with 1-s length yielded the best performance for classifying continuous behaviour datasets. The performance of classification model generally improved as more birds were included for training. In conclusion, classification of specific broiler behaviours can be achieved by recording bird triaxial accelerations and analysing acceleration data through machine learning. Performances of different machine learning models differ in classifying specific broiler behaviours.

Effects of Different Scratch Mat Designs on Hen Behaviour and Eggs Laid in Enriched Cages

Enriched cages for laying hens must contain litter so that pecking and scratching are possible. This is typically provided using layer’s feed dispensed onto a scratch mat, however, there are no regulations on the size or materials of the mat. This study examined how different scratch mat designs and bird age affected behaviours on the mat at three times of day, and their influence on where eggs were laid and shell quality. The proportion of hens at the scratch mats did not increase during or shortly after the application of scratch feed, however, they were more likely to be foraging then. Most eggs collected were clean and laid in the nest. Of the small proportion of eggs that were cracked or dirty, the mat type did not affect dirty eggs, but eggs laid opposite the Big Dutchman mats were more likely to be cracked at 79 weeks of age than at any other mat type or age. There appeared to be no optimal scratch mat design (of those studied) and their use (during observations) was low, suggesting that mat designs were not major influencers on bird behaviour.

Abstract

Laying hens in the UK and EU must be provided with litter for pecking and scratching. In enriched cages, this is commonly provided by dispensing layer’s feed onto a scratch mat. Mats vary in design and size, which might affect hen behaviour and egg quality, since eggs are sometimes laid at the mats. We investigated if four different scratch mats (BD, K, V, Z) provided to hens in enriched cages resulted in differences in behaviour on the mats and external egg quality. Twenty-four 60-bird cages (6 cages/bank × 4 banks) with 2 mats/cage at one tier of a commercial enriched cage unit were used. Mats were allocated to cages in a balanced design prior to the flock arriving. Hens and eggs were studied at 30, 50 and 79 weeks of age, with three behaviour observations (before, during or after scratch feed application). The data were analysed by GLMMs or LMMs. The vast proportions of birds on the mats were standing (0.720) or sitting (0.250). Bird proportions on the mats were low overall and declined from 0.028 (30 weeks) and 0.030 (50 weeks) to 0.020 (79 weeks) (p < 0.001). The greatest proportion of hens were observed on Z (p < 0.001), which had the largest area, but relative to the available area least birds were on Z and most were on K (p < 0.001). Foraging was not affected by bird age or mat type but was greater at the second observation (p < 0.001). Most eggs were laid in the nest box and were clean. Clean eggs declined, and dirty eggs increased, significantly with age, particularly at the scratch mat (p < 0.001). Dirty eggs were not affected by mat design. Cracked eggs were highest at 79 weeks of age, particularly with BD mats (p < 0.001). Overall, scratch mat designs had minimal effects on behaviour (but few hens were seen there) and egg quality.

Investigation of the effects of probiotic, Bacillus subtilis on stress reactions in laying hens using infrared thermography

The goal of the study was to assess whether tonic immobility (TI)-induced stress reactions in laying hens can be reduced by probiotic supplementation and if the changes in body surface temperature, as a stress indicator, are genetically dependent and can be detected using infrared thermography (IRT). Seventy-one white and 70 brown hens were used. Hens were randomly assigned to three treatments at 1-day-old: beak trimmed and fed a regular diet; non-beak trimmed and fed a regular diet; and non-beak trimmed and fed a diet supplemented with probiotics, Bacillus subtilis. At 40 weeks of age, hens were tested for TI reactions. Eye and face temperatures were measured with IRT immediately before and after TI testing. Results revealed that the probiotic supplementation did not affect hens' stress responses to TI testing; the left and right eye temperatures increased by 0.26s°C and 0.15°C, respectively, while right face temperature tended to increase following TI testing. However, the right eye (32.60°C for white, and 32.35°C for brown) and face (39.51°C for white, and 39.36°C for brown) temperatures differed significantly among genetic lines. There was a positive correlation between TI duration and the changes of the left and right eye temperatures after TI testing in white hens. Based on these results, hens experienced TI-induced surface temperature changes that were detectable using IRT. White hens experienced greater stress reactions in response to TI than brown hens. However, supplementation with Bacillus subtilis did not attenuate hens' reaction to TI testing.

Characterising Free-Range Layer Flocks Using Unsupervised Cluster Analysis

This study aimed to identify sub-populations of free-range laying hens and describe the pattern of their resource usage, which can affect hen performance and welfare. In three commercial flocks, 3125 Lohmann Brown hens were equipped with radio-frequency identification (RFID) transponder leg bands and placed with their flock companions, resulting in a total of 40,000 hens/flock. Hens were monitored for their use of the aviary system, including feeder lines, nest boxes, and the outdoor range. K-means and agglomerative cluster analysis, optimized with the Calinski-Harabasz Criterion, was performed and identified three clusters. Individual variation in time duration was observed in all the clusters with the highest individual differences observed on the upper feeder (140 ± 1.02%) and the range (176 ± 1.03%). Hens of cluster 1 spent the least amount time on the range and the most time on the feed chain located at the upper aviary tier (p < 0.05). We conclude that an uneven load on the resources, as well as consistent and inconsistent movement patterns, occur in the hen house. Further analysis of the data sets using classification models based on support vector machines, artificial neural networks, and decision trees are warranted to investigate the contribution of these and other parameters on hen performance.

Keel bone fractures induce a depressive-like state in laying hens

In commercial flocks of laying hens, keel bone fractures (KBFs) are prevalent and associated with behavioural indicators of pain. However, whether their impact is severe enough to induce a depressive-like state of chronic stress is unknown. As chronic stress downregulates adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) in mammals and birds, we employ this measure as a neural biomarker of subjective welfare state. Radiographs obtained longitudinally from Lohmann Brown laying hens housed in a commercial multi-tier aviary were used to score the severity of naturally-occurring KBFs between the ages of 21-62 weeks. Individual birds' transitions between aviary zones were also recorded. Focal hens with severe KBFs at 3-4 weeks prior to sampling (n = 15) had lower densities of immature doublecortin-positive (DCX+) multipolar and bipolar neurons in the hippocampal formation than focal hens with minimal fractures (n = 9). KBF severity scores at this time also negatively predicted DCX+ cell numbers on an individual level, while hens that acquired fractures earlier in their lives had fewer DCX+ neurons in the caudal hippocampal formation. Activity levels 3-4 weeks prior to sampling were not associated with AHN. KBFs thus lead to a negative affective state lasting at least 3-4 weeks, and management steps to reduce their occurrence are likely to have significant welfare benefits.

Challenges in the comparative study of empathy and related phenomena in animals

The aim of this review is to discuss recent arguments and findings in the comparative study of empathy. Based on a multidisciplinary approach including psychology and ethology, we review the non-human animal literature concerning theoretical frameworks, methodology, and research outcomes. One specific objective is to highlight discrepancies between theory and empirical findings, and to discuss ambiguities present in current data and their interpretation. In particular, we focus on emotional contagion and its experimental investigation, and on consolation and targeted helping as measures for sympathy. Additionally, we address the feasibility of comparing across species with behavioural data alone. One main conclusion of our review is that animal research on empathy still faces the challenge of closing the gap between theoretical concepts and empirical evidence. To advance our knowledge, we propose to focus more on the emotional basis of empathy, rather than on possibly ambiguous behavioural indicators, and we provide suggestions to overcome the limitations of previous research .

Light-based monitoring devices to assess range use by laying hens

Access to an outdoor range has many potential benefits for laying hens but range use can be poor due to factors only partly understood. Techniques to monitor individual range use within commercial flocks are crucial to increase our understanding of these factors. Direct observation of individual range use is difficult and time-consuming, and automatic monitoring currently relies on equipment that is difficult to use in an on-farm setting without itself influencing range use. We evaluated the performance of a novel small, light and readily portable light-based monitoring system by validating its output against direct observations. Six commercial houses (2000 hens/house) and their adjacent ranges were used, three of which were equipped with more structures on the range than the others (to determine whether cover would influence monitoring accuracy). In each house, 14 hens were equipped with light monitoring devices for 5 discrete monitoring cycles of 7 to 8 consecutive days (at 20, 26, 32, 36 and 41 weeks of age). Light levels were determined each minute: if the reading on the hen-mounted device exceeded indoor light levels, the hen was classified as outside. Focal hens were observed directly for 5 min/hen per week. Accuracy (% of samples where monitoring and direct observations were in agreement) was high both for ranges with more and with fewer structures, although slightly better for the latter (92% v. 96% ± 1 SEM, F1,19 = 5.2, P = 0.034). Furthermore, accuracy increased over time (89%, 94%, 95%, 98% ± 1 SEM for observations at 26, 32, 36 and 41 weeks, respectively, F3,19 = 3.2, P = 0.047), probably due to progressively reduced indoor light levels resulting from partial closing of ventilation openings to sustain indoor temperature. Light-based monitoring was sufficiently accurate to indicate a tendency for a greater percentage of monitored time spent outside when more range structures were provided (more: 67%, fewer: 56%, SEM: 4, $\chi_1^2 &#x003D; 2.9$, P = 0.089). Furthermore, clear and relatively consistent individual differences were detected. Individuals that were caught outside at the start of the experiment ranged more throughout its duration (caught outside: 72%, caught inside 51%, SEM: 4, $\chi_1^2 &#x003D; 10.0$, P = 0.002), and individual range use was correlated between monitoring cycles (for adjacent monitoring cycles: $r_s^2 &#x003D; 0.5-0.7$, P < 0.0001). This emphasizes the importance of studying range use on an individual level. In conclusion, our light-based monitoring system can assess individual range use accurately (although accuracy was affected by house characteristics to some extent) and was used to show that both cover availability and individual characteristics affected range use.

A Systematic Review of Precision Livestock Farming in the Poultry Sector: Is Technology Focussed on Improving Bird Welfare?

Precision livestock farming (PLF) is the use of technology to help farmers monitor and manage their animals and their farm. This technology can help to improve animal welfare by enabling farmers to act as soon as any problem arises. However, the technology can also be used to increase production efficiency on the farm, which could be prioritised over the animals’ welfare. The aim of this study was to give an overview of PLF technology development in poultry farming, and to investigate whether improving welfare has been the main goal of PLF development. The results suggest that PLF development in poultry farming so far has focussed on improving animal health and welfare, more so than increasing production. However, despite the interest in PLF research for poultry farming across the world (especially in the USA, China and Belgium), most of the technology is still being developed (prototypes); only a few are available for farmers to buy and use. This means that future work should focus on making these technologies commercially available to farmers, so that systems developed to improve welfare can be used to improve the welfare of farmed birds in the real world.

Abstract

Precision livestock farming (PLF) systems have the potential to improve animal welfare through providing a continuous picture of welfare states in real time and enabling fast interventions that benefit the current flock. However, it remains unclear whether the goal of PLF development has been to improve welfare or increase production efficiency. The aims of this systematic literature review are to provide an overview of the current state of PLF in poultry farming and investigate whether the focus of PLF research has been to improve bird welfare. The study characteristics extracted from 264 peer-reviewed publications and conference proceedings suggest that poultry PLF has received increasing attention on a global scale, but is yet to become a widespread commercial reality. PLF development has most commonly focussed on broiler farming, followed by laying hens, and mainly involves the use of sensors (environmental and wearable) and cameras. More publications had animal health and welfare than production as either one of or the only goal, suggesting that PLF development so far has focussed on improving animal health and welfare. Future work should prioritise improving the rate of commercialisation of PLF systems, so that their potential to improve bird welfare might be realised.

Socially-mediated arousal and contagion within domestic chick broods

Emotional contagion - an underpinning valenced feature of empathy - is made up of simpler, potentially dissociable social processes which can include socially-mediated arousal and behavioural/physiological contagion. Previous studies of emotional contagion have often conflated these processes rather than examining their independent contribution to empathic response. We measured socially-mediated arousal and contagion in 9-week old domestic chicks (n = 19 broods), who were unrelated but raised together from hatching. Pairs of observer chicks were exposed to two conditions in a counterbalanced order: air puff to conspecifics (AP) (during which an air puff was applied to three conspecifics at 30 s intervals) and control with noise of air puff (C) (during which the air puff was directed away from the apparatus at 30 s intervals). Behaviour and surface eye temperature of subjects and observers were measured throughout a 10-min pre-treatment and 10-min treatment period. Subjects and observers responded to AP with increased freezing, and reduced preening and ground pecking. Subjects and observers also showed reduced surface eye temperature - indicative of stress-induced hyperthermia. Subject-Observer behaviour was highly correlated within broods during both C and AP conditions, but with higher overall synchrony during AP. We demonstrate the co-occurrence of socially-mediated behavioural and physiological arousal and contagion; component features of emotional contagion.
