Impact of the COVID-19 Confinement on Couple Satisfaction and Sexuality

This study examined dyadic adjustment, which is an essential aspect for a couple's functioning, and its relationship with sexual self-esteem during COVID-19 confinement. This article presents data from before and during the confinement due to COVID-19 in Spain. 120 men and 89 women who were part of a couple at the time of confinement and completed an online survey participated in the study. The sample was obtained during the de-escalation months, from May 9th until July 1st, 2020. Three questionnaires were administered. The results that were obtained from the T-student, Pearson correlations and regression analyses show a decline in couples' adjustment during the months of confinement. Regarding the Sexuality Scale, the results showed that the sexual-depression subscale and the sexual self-esteem subscale had a statistically significant role in predicting the dyadic adjustment during confinement. Overall, our findings suggest that confinement had a negative effect on sexuality because the sexual-depression of the sample increased and couple adjustment decreased during the confinement due to COVID-19.

Factors related to dyadic adjustment in couples with children of pediatric age

AIM

To identify a relationship between social support, family life cycle, family transition and stressful events; and the dyadic adjustment among couples from Seville with children of pediatric age.

METHOD

Descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study. Ninety-five Sevillian couples were recruited following a consecutive stratified sampling by quotas. They filled in a questionnaire with the study variables and the Dyadic Adjustment and Social Support scales. Data collection was carried out in 2015. The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Seville. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskall-Wallis non-parametric tests were used for statistical analysis, and Spearman test for correlation between variables. Significance was stated for P<.05.

RESULTS

The couples were mostly marriages with good dyadic adjustment and social support. A percentage of 26.3 had infant and 73.7% children of school age. No relationship between the life cycle nor the family transition and the dyadic adjustment were identified. The beginning-end of schooling was related to spousal cohesion and there were positive correlations between dyadic adjustment and social support; and negative correlations between the number of children and social support, consensus and satisfaction of the couple.

CONCLUSIONS

Social support and the number of children are identified as the main conditioning factors of dyadic adjustment. In this sense, it is essential to know the resources available to each couple to face the difficulties where social support and the union between the spouses can help them face the challenges.

Percepción de la autoridad parental en adolescentes escolarizados víctimas de desplazamiento

Objetivo: identificar los estilos de socialización parental percibidos por adolescentes escolarizados en un sector vulnerable de población, de Villavicencio, Colombia, víctima de desplazamiento por conflicto armado. Materiales y métodos: estudio cuantitativo descriptivo. Se tomó como muestra el total de la población de adolescentes escolarizados del sector (n = 184) entre los 12 y 19 años de edad. Se aplicó la Escala de socialización parental en la adolescencia (ESPA 29) en el año 2015, donde el adolescente valora la reacción de cada progenitor frente a 29 situaciones cotidianas. Resultados: se clasificó a cada padre de familia en un estilo de socialización o crianza entre cuatro posibles opciones: los adolescentes de sexo masculino en general percibieron estilos más indulgentes en sus padres y más autoritativos en sus madres; las adolescentes percibieron estilos más autoritativos en sus madres y menos autoritarios o negligentes en sus padres. La población en general percibe a sus progenitores más asociados al diálogo y al afecto, con un patrón de socialización más cercano a la aceptación-implicación. Conclusiones: los adolescentes de ambos sexos perciben en sus padres un estilo de crianza más autoritativo e indulgente que autoritario o negligente. Distinguen una socialización familiar más basada en el diálogo y el afecto que en la displicencia y la indiferencia, lo que constituye un factor protector para esta población.
