Abstract
Energy conversion and pollutant degradation are critical for advancing sustainable technologies, yet they often encounter challenges related to charge recombination and efficiency limitations. This study explores iodine-doped TiO2 nanoparticles as a potential solution for enhancing both energy conversion and pollutant degradation. The nanoparticles were synthesized via the sol-gel method with varying iodine precursor concentrations (0.025-0.1 M) and were characterized for their structural, compositional, and optical properties, particularly in relation to their photocatalytic performance in Rhodamine-B dye degradation. X-ray diffraction confirmed a tetragonal anatase crystal structure, with the average crystallite size decreasing from 10.06 nm to 8.82 nm with increase in iodine concentration. Selected area electron diffraction patterns verified the polycrystalline nature of the nanoparticles. Dynamic light scattering analysis showed hydrodynamic radii ranging from 95 to 125 nm. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy identified metal-oxygen vibrations at 441 cm⁻1, and electron microscopy confirmed the spherical morphology of the nanoparticles. Elemental analysis detected the presence of Ti, O, and I in the samples. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy indicated the optical absorption edges for the doped samples in the visible region from which the corresponding band gap values were deduced. Photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed that the sample with 0.1 M iodine exhibit the lowest emission intensity, suggesting reduced charge recombination. Notably, 0.1 M iodine doped TiO2 samples demonstrated the highest photocatalytic efficiency, achieving 82.36% degradation of Rhodamine-B dye within 140 min under visible light. Additionally, ab-initio density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the structural, optical, and adsorption properties of TiO2, iodine-doped TiO2, Rhodamine-B, and their composites, providing further insight into the enhanced photocatalytic activity observed in the experiments.

Abstract
The water scarcity, the presence of different contaminants in the worldwide waters and wastewaters and their impacts should motivate their good elimination and water management. With this, photocatalysis and photocatalytic ozonation are strong solutions to obtain good quality reclaimed water, for different applications. Nanostructured supported photo-active catalysts, such as the TiO2, WO3 or ZnO can positively affect the performance of such technologies. Therefore, different semiconductors materials have been aroused the interest of the scientific community, mainly due to its functional properties as well as characteristics imposed by the different nanostructures. With this, this work overviews different works and perspective on the TiO2 nanotubes and other semiconductors nanostructures, with the analysis of different works from 2001 to 2022. Aspects as the substrate effect, electrolyte nature, aspect ratio, electrolyte aging, and annealing treatment but also the effect of morphology, anodization time, applied voltage, temperature and viscosity are discussed. Modification of TiO2 nanotubes is also presented in this paper. The main objective of this work is to present and discuss the key parameters and their effects on the anodization of different semiconductors, as well as the results obtained until today on the degradation of different contaminants by photocatalysis and photocatalytic ozonation, as well as their use on the treatment of real wastewater. TiO2 nanotubes present unique properties and highly ordered configuration, which motivate their use on photo-driven technologies for the pollutant's abatement, even when compared to other nanostructures. However, photocatalysts with activity on the visible range and solar radiation, such as the WO3, can present higher performance and can decrease operational costs, and must be an important source and a key to find efficient and cost-friendly solutions.

Abstract
TiO2 develops a higher efficiency when doping Bi into it by increasing the visible light absorption and inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated charges. Herein, a highly efficient Bi doped TiO2 photoanode was fabricated via a one-step modified sol-gel method and a screen-printing technique for the anode of photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC). A maximum degradation rate of 91.2% of Rhodamine B (RhB) and of 89% after being repeated 5 times with only 2% lost reflected an enhanced PFC performance and demonstrated an excellent stability under visible-light irradiation. The excellent degradation performance was attributed to the enhanced visible-light response and decreased electron-hole recombination rate. Meanwhile, an excellent linear correlation was observed between the efficient photocurrent of PFC and the chemical oxygen demand of solution when RhB is sufficient.

Abstract
The study explored the characteristics and effectiveness of modified TiO2 nanotubes with zeolite as a composite photocatalyst (MTNZC) for the degradation of triclocarban (TCC) from the aqueous solution. MTNZC samples have been produced via electrochemical anodisation (ECA) followed by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Three independent factors selected include MTNZC size (0.5-1 cm2), pH (3-10), and irradiation time (10-60 min). The observation revealed that the surface of Ti substrate by the 40 V of anodisation and 3 h of calcination was covered with the array ordered, smooth and optimum elongated nanotubes with average tube length was approximately 5.1 μm. EDS analysis proved the presence of Si, Mg, Al, and Na on MTNZC due to the chemical composition present in the zeolite. The average crystallite size of TiO₂ nanotubes increased from 2.07 to 3.95 nm by increasing anodisation voltage (10, 40, and 60 V) followed by 450 °C of calcination for 1, 3, and 6 h, respectively. The optimisation by RSM shows the F-value (36.12), the p-value of all responses were less than 0.0001, and the 95% confidence level of the model by all the responses indicated the model was significant. The R2 in the range of 0.9433-0.9906 showed the suitability of the model to represent the actual relationship among the parameters. The photocatalytic degradation rate of TCC from the first and the fifth cycles were 94.2 and 77.4%, indicating the applicability of MTNZC to be used for several cycles.

Abstract
In the past few decades, extensive studies have been performed to utilize the solar energy for photocatalytic water splitting; however, up to the present, the overall efficiencies reported in the literature are still unsatisfactory for commercialization. The crucial element of this challenging concept is the proper selection and design of photocatalytic material to enable significant extension of practical application perspectives. One of the important features in describing photocatalysts, although underestimated, is particle morphology. Accordingly, this review presents the advances achieved in the design of photocatalysts that are dedicated to hydrogen generation, with an emphasis on the particle morphology and its potential correlation with the overall reaction performance. The novel concept of this work—with the content presented in a clear and logical way—is based on the division into five parts according to dimensional arrangement groups of 0D, 1D, 2D, 3D, and combined systems. In this regard, it has been shown that the consideration of the discussed aspects, focusing on different types of particle morphology and their correlation with the system’s efficiency, could be a promising route for accelerating the development of photocatalytic materials oriented for solar-driven hydrogen generation. Finally, concluding remarks (additionally including the problems connected with experiments) and potential future directions of particle morphology-based design of photocatalysts for hydrogen production systems have been presented.

Abstract
Solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, using semiconductor photoelectrodes, is considered a promising renewable energy source and solution for environmental sustainability. Herein, we report polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a binder material for combining MoS2 and TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) to improve PEC water splitting ability. By a thermal treatment process, the formation of the π conjunction in the PVA structure enhanced the PEC performance of MoS2/TNAs, exhibiting linear sweeps in an anodic direction with the current density over 65 μA/cm2 at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Besides, the photoresponse ability of MoS2/TNAs is approximately 6-fold more significant than that of individual TNAs. Moreover, a Tafel slope of 140.6 mV/decade has been obtained for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of MoS2/TNAs materials.

Abstract
Fabrication of noble-metal-free, efficient and stable hybrid photocatalyst is essential to address the rapidly growing energy crisis and environmental pollution. Here, MoS2 has been used as the co-catalyst on Bi-doped TiO2 to form a novel heterostructure to increase the utilization of the photogenerated charge carriers for improving photocatalytic H2 evolution activity through water reduction. Significantly increased photocatalytic H2 generation has been achieved on the optimized MoS2/Bi-TiO2 nanocomposite (∼512 μmol g-1) after 4 h of visible light illumination, which is nine times higher than that of the pristine TiO2 (∼57 μmol g-1). The measurements of photocurrent, charge transfer resistance and photo-stability of MoS2/Bi-TiO2 photoanode imply that charge separation efficiency has been improved in comparison to the pure MoS2 and TiO2 photoanodes. Further, the Mott-Schottky study confirmed that a p-n heterojunction has been formed between n-type MoS2 and p-type Bi-doped TiO2, which provides a potential gradient to increase charge separation and transfer efficiency. On the basis of these experimental results, this enhanced photocatalytic activity of MoS2/Bi-TiO2 heterostructures could be ascribed to the significant visible light absorption and the efficient charge carrier separation. Thus, this work demonstrates the effect of p-n junction for achieving high H2 evolution activity and photoelectrochemical water oxidation under visible light illumination.

Abstract
AgInS2 nanoparticle and graphene nanosheet co-sensitized anatase TiO2 nanotube array films were fabricated by a combination of hydrothermal reaction and electrochemical anodization on titanium sheets. The results showed that the co-sensitization of AgInS2 nanoparticles and graphene nanosheets extended the photoresponse of TiO2 nanotubes into the visible-light region, and improved the photogenerated charge separation and transfer capability. The photocurrent density of the AgInS2/graphene/TiO2 composites (about 4.0 mA cm-2) was 20 times that of bare TiO2 (only 0.2 mA cm-2) under visible-light illumination. The potential negative shift value of AgInS2/graphene/TiO2 composites was up to 0.68 V versus saturated calomel electrode. The AgInS2/graphene/TiO2 composites can provide Q235 carbon steel with highly efficient photocathodic protection under visible-light illumination.

Abstract
One of the common complications diagnosed in Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients is Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFUs). It is a condition wherein the deep tissues located in the lower limb undergo inflammation and infection due to neurological abnormalities (neuropathy) and various degrees of vascular diseases (angiopathy). The concentration of l-tyrosine (Tyr) rises abruptly in DFUs, and therefore may be used as an indicator for early monitoring of the patient's condition during the onset of diabetic foot disease. Herein, we report the electrochemical enzymatic detection of Tyr using low energy ion beam modified titania nanotube (TiNT) thin films with nitrogen (N+) and gold (Au-) ions. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) analysis was performed to investigate the levels of Tyr using ion beam modified TiNT thin film electrodes. The modified electrodes exhibited excellent sensor performances with Au-TiNT and N-TiNT within the Tyr concentration range of 100 fM -500 μM with limit of detection (LoD)1.76 nM and 1.25 nM respectively and response time ∼ 1 min. The results indicate that low energy ion beam modified TiNT/enzyme bio-electrodes can potentially be employed as a highly sensitive and portable sensor for real-time detection of l-tyrosine in wound fluids for the development of a smart bandage.

Abstract
Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an important analytical tool for the optochemical detection of molecules. The enhancement is commonly achieved by engineering (i) novel types and morphologies of plasmonic nanomaterials, and (ii) patterned or roughened supporting substrates of high surface area for increased light scattering and molecule adsorption. Si substrates can be easily and reproducibly textured for effective SERS applications. In this work, silver nanoprisms (AgNPr) coated silicon nanowire (SiNWs) of different morphologies have been prepared by metal-assisted chemical etching and tested for SERS detection of R6G dye. By varying the etching time from 5 to 30 min, the nanowires' lengths increased from 2.4 to 10.5 µm and resulted in a variable topological morphology of the substrates in terms of bundles and valleys. We found that an optimum of 10 min etching time led to the highest SERS enhancement of R6G on AgNPr/SiNWs at 612 cm-1 Raman shift (30× compared to R6G/Si and 2× compared to R6G/AgNPr/Si), with a detection limit comparable to that of state-of-the-art performances (down to 5×10-10 M of R6G). Such an enhancement is attributed to a middle ground between increased overall surface area of SiNWs, and the available bundle tops trapping the AgNPr and R6G molecules.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide nanotubes gain considerable attention as a photoactive material due to chemical stability, photocorrosion resistance, or low-cost manufacturing method. This work presents scalable pulsed laser modification of TiO2 nanotubes resulting in enhanced photoactivity in a system equipped with a motorized table, which allows for modifications of both precisely selected and any-large sample area. Images obtained from scanning electron microscopy along with Raman and UV-vis spectra of laser-treated samples in a good agreement indicate the presence of additional laser-induced shallow states within band gap via degradation of crystalline structure. However, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra revealed no change of chemical nature of the modified sample surface. Photoelectrochemical measurements demonstrate superior photoresponse of laser-treated samples up to 1.45-fold for an energy beam fluence of 40 mJ/cm2 compared to that of calcined one. According to the obtained results, optimal processing parameters were captured. Mott-Schottky analysis obtained from impedance measurements indicates an enormous (over an order of magnitude) increase of donor density along with a +0.74 V positive shift of flat band potential. Such changes in electronic structure are most likely responsible for enhanced photoactivity. Thus, the elaborated method of laser nanostructuring can be successfully employed to the large-scale modification of titania nanotubes resulting in their superior photoactivity. According to that, the results of our work provide a contribution to wider applications of materials based on titania nanotubes.

Morphology- and Crystalline Composition-Governed Activity of Titania-Based Photocatalysts: Overview and Perspective. Catalysts 2019. Abstract
Titania photocatalysts have been intensively examined for both mechanism study and possible commercial applications for more than 30 years. Although various reports have already been published on titania, including comprehensive review papers, the morphology-governed activity, especially for novel nanostructures, has not been reviewed recently. Therefore, this paper presents novel, attractive, and prospective titania photocatalysts, including zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensional titania structures. The 1D, 2D, and 3D titania structures have been mainly designed for possible applications, e.g., (i) continuous use without the necessity of particulate titania separation, (ii) efficient light harvesting (e.g., inverse opals), (iii) enhanced activity (fast charge carriers’ separation, e.g., 1D nanoplates and 2D nanotubes). It should be pointed out that these structures might be also useful for mechanism investigation, e.g., (i) 3D titania aerogels with gold either incorporated inside the 3D network or supported in the porosity, and (ii) titania mesocrystals with gold deposited either on basal or lateral surfaces, for the clarification of plasmonic photocatalysis. Moreover, 0D nanostructures of special composition and morphology, e.g., magnetic(core)–titania(shell), mixed-phase titania (anatase/rutile/brookite), and faceted titania NPs have been presented, due to their exceptional properties, including easy separation in the magnetic field, high activity, and mechanism clarification, respectively. Although anatase has been usually thought as the most active phase of titania, the co-existence of other crystalline phases accelerates the photocatalytic activity significantly, and thus mixed-phase titania (e.g., famous P25) exhibits high photocatalytic activity for both oxidation and reduction reactions. It is believed that this review might be useful for the architecture design of novel nanomaterials for broad and diverse applications, including environmental purification, energy conversion, synthesis and preparation of “intelligent” surfaces with self-cleaning, antifogging, and antiseptic properties.

Abstract
In this study, the co-synthesis of TiO2 and Cu metallic nanoparticles obtained via one-pot cost-efficient hydrothermal process has been addressed. Different nanocatalysts with Cu contents were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The TiO2 and Cu metallic nanoparticles were synthesized with copper loading up to one (Cu/Ti atomic ratio). Synthesized catalysts exhibited pore sizes in the mesoporous range and high surface areas above 150 m2/g. The particle size for TiO2 presented a homogeneous distribution of approximately 8 nm, moreover, Cu nanoparticles varied from 12 to >100 nm depending on the metal loading. The nanostructured materials were successfully tested in the conversion of trans-ferulic acid into vanillin under sustainable conditions, achieving the best performance for 0.3 Cu/Ti atomic ratio (70% vanillin yield).

Abstract
Octahedral anatase particles (OAP) with eight exposed and thermodynamically most stable (101) facets were prepared by an ultrasonication-hydrothermal (US-HT) reaction from potassium titanate nanowires (TNW). The precursor (TNW) and the product (OAP) of US-HT reaction were modified with nanoparticles of noble metals (Au, Ag or Pt) by photodeposition. Samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC). The photocatalytic activity was investigated in three reaction systems, i.e., anaerobic dehydrogenation of methanol and oxidative decomposition of acetic acid under UV/vis irradiation, and oxidation of 2-propanol under vis irradiation. It was found that hydrogen liberation correlated with work function of metals, and thus the most active were platinum-modified samples. Photocatalytic activities of bare and modified OAP samples were much higher than those of TNW samples, probably due to anatase presence, higher crystallinity and electron mobility in faceted NPs. Interestingly, noble metals showed different influence on the activity depending on the semiconductor support, i.e., gold-modified TNW and platinum-modified OAP exhibited the highest activity for acetic acid decomposition, whereas silver- and gold-modified samples were the most active under vis irradiation, respectively. It is proposed that the form of noble metal (metallic vs. oxidized) as well as the morphology (well-organized vs. uncontrolled) have a critical effect on the overall photocatalytic performance. TRMC analysis confirmed that fast electron transfer to noble metal is a key factor for UV activity. It is proposed that the efficiency of plasmonic photocatalysis (under vis irradiation) depends on the oxidation form of metal (zero-valent preferable), photoabsorption properties (broad localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)), kind of metal (silver) and counteraction of “hot” electrons back transfer to noble metal NPs (by controlled morphology and high crystallinity).

Abstract
The efficient and safe degradation of drugs present in wastewater requires the design of a new material possessing high activity for that process. In addition to other methods, photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) merges the strengths of both photocatalytic and electrochemical methods, and the efficiency could be enhanced by the type of photoelectrode material. To address this challenge, three Ti/TiO2 nanotube-based photoelectrodes, differing in their tube morphology, were prepared by anodic oxidation and employed for the degradation of the 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) drug by the PEC process. The highest efficiency for 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) degradation by PEC was observed for the photoelectrode with a 1.7 μm length, 65 nm diameter and 8 nm wall thickness of TiO2 nanotubes, which were prepared by Ti foil anodization at 30 V. The effects of applied potential, irradiation intensity, initial pH and 5-FU concentration on PEC were investigated. Furthermore, our findings showed that the mechanism of photoelectrocatalysis in the presence of TiO2 nanotubes is based on ∙OH and h+ activity. To determine the 5-FU degradation pathway, the organic byproducts were identified by LC-MS analysis. Furthermore, the ecotoxicity evaluated during PEC dropped with decreasing 5-FU concentration.

Abstract
Titanium oxide nanotubes (TNTs) were anodically grown in ethylene glycol electrolyte. The influence of the anodization time on their physicochemical and photoelectrochemical properties was evaluated. Concomitant with the anodization time, the NT length, fluorine content, and capacitance of the space charge region increased, affecting the opto-electronic properties (bandgap, bathochromic shift, band-edge position) and surface hydrophilicity of TiO2 NTs. These properties are at the origin of the photocatalytic activity (PCA), as proved with the photooxidation of methylene blue.

Abstract
TiO2/CuxOy nanotube (NT) arrays were synthesized using the anodization method in the presence of ethylene glycol and different parameters applied. The presence, morphology, and chemical character of the obtained structures was characterized using a variety of methods—SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray crystallography), PL (photoluminescence), and EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). A p-n mixed oxide heterojunction of Ti-Cu was created with a proved response to the visible light range and the stable form that were in contact with Ti. TiO2/CuxOy NTs presented the appearance of both Cu2O (mainly) and CuO components influencing the dimensions of the NTs (1.1–1.3 µm). Additionally, changes in voltage have been proven to affect the NTs’ length, which reached a value of 3.5 µm for Ti90Cu10_50V. Degradation of phenol in the aqueous phase was observed in 16% of Ti85Cu15_30V after 1 h of visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). Scavenger tests for phenol degradation process in presence of NT samples exposed the responsibility of superoxide radicals for degradation of organic compounds in Vis light region. Inactivation of bacteria strains Escherichia coli (E. coli), Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis), and Clostridium sp. in presence of obtained TiO2/CuxOy NT photocatalysts, and Vis light has been studied showing a great improvement in inactivation efficiency with a response rate of 97% inactivation for E. coli and 98% for Clostridium sp. in 60 min. Evidently, TEM (transmission electron microscopy) images confirmed the bacteria cells’ damage.

Abstract
A photoelectrochemical wire microelectrode was constructed based on the use of a TiO2 nanotube array with electrochemically deposited CdSe semiconductor. A strongly amplified photocurrent is generated on the sensor surface. The microsensor has a response in the 0.05-20 μM dopamine (DA) concentration range and a 16.7 μM detection limit at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Sensitivity, recovery and reproducibility of the sensor were validated by detecting DA in spiked human urine, and satisfactory results were obtained. Graphical abstract Schematic of a sensitive photoelectrochemical microsensor based on CdSe modified TiO2 nanotube array. The photoelectrochemical microsensor was successfully applied to the determination of dopamine in urine samples.

Abstract
Homogeneous decoration of TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) by Ag metallic nanoparticles (NPs) was carried out by a relatively simple photoreduction process. This Ag-NPs decoration was found to improve the photoconversion efficiency of the TiO2-NTs based photoanodes. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction analyses confirmed that all the Ag-NPs are metallic and the underlying TiO2-NTs crystallize in the anatase phase after their annealing at 400 °C, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy observations have confirmed the effective decoration of the TiO2-NTs' surface by Ag-NPs, and allowed to measure the average Ag-NPs size, which was found to increase linearly from (4 ± 2) nm to (16 ± 4) nm when the photoreduction time is increased from 5 to 20 min. The diffuse reflectivity of the Ag-NPs decorated TiO2-NTs was found to decrease significantly as compared to the undecorated TiO2-NTs. Interestingly, the Ag-NPs decorated TiO2-NTs exhibited a significantly enhanced photochemical response, under visible radiation, with regards to the undecorated NTs. This enhancement was found to reach its maximum for the TiO2-NTs decorated with Ag-NPs having the optimal average diameter of ∼8.5 nm. The maximum photoconversion efficiency of Ag-NPs decorated TiO2-NTs was about two times greater than for the undecorated ones. This improved photo-electro-chemical response is believed to be associated with the additional absorption of visible light of Ag-NPs through the localized surface plasmon resonance phenomenon. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the photoluminescence intensity of the Ag-NPs decorated TiO2-NTs was found to decrease significantly as compared to undecorated NTs, due to charge carriers trapping in the Ag NPs. This demonstrates that Ag-NPs decoration promotes photogenerated charges separation in the TiO2-NTs, increasing thereby their capacity for current photogeneration. The surface decoration of TiO2 NTs by noble metals NPs is expected to impact positively the use of TiO2-NTs based photoanodes in some energetic applications such as hydrogen generation and photo-electrochemical solar cells.

Abstract
We report the preparation of TiO2 nanotubes coupled with a narrow bandgap semiconductor, i.e., Bi2S3, to improve the photocathodic protection property of TiO2 for metals under visible light. Bi2S3/TiO2 nanotube films were successfully synthesized using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. The morphology and structure of the composite films were studied by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded to analyze the optical absorption property of the composite films. In addition, the influence of Bi2S3 deposition cycles on the photoelectrochemical and photocathodic protection properties of the composite films was also studied. Results revealed that the heterostructure comprised crystalline anatase TiO2 and orthorhombic Bi2S3 and exhibited a high visible light response. The photocurrent density of Bi2S3/TiO2 was significantly higher than that of pure TiO2 under visible light. The sensitization of Bi2S3 enhanced the separation efficiency of the photogenerated charges and photocathodic protection properties of TiO2. The Bi2S3/TiO2 nanotubes prepared by SILAR deposition with 20 cycles exhibited the optimal photogenerated cathodic protection performance on the 304 stainless steel under visible light.

Abstract
V₂O₅-TiO₂ mixed oxide nanotube (NT) layers were successfully prepared via the one-step anodization of Ti-V alloys. The obtained samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis absorption, photoluminescence spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (DRX), and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The effect of the applied voltage (30-50 V), vanadium content (5-15 wt %) in the alloy, and water content (2-10 vol %) in an ethylene glycol-based electrolyte was studied systematically to determine their influence on the morphology, and for the first-time, on the photocatalytic properties of these nanomaterials. The morphology of the samples varied from sponge-like to highly-organized nanotubular structures. The vanadium content in the alloy was found to have the highest influence on the morphology and the sample with the lowest vanadium content (5 wt %) exhibited the best auto-alignment and self-organization (length = 1 μm, diameter = 86 nm and wall thickness = 11 nm). Additionally, a probable growth mechanism of V₂O₅-TiO₂ nanotubes (NTs) over the Ti-V alloys was presented. Toluene, in the gas phase, was effectively removed through photodegradation under visible light (LEDs, λmax = 465 nm) in the presence of the modified TiO₂ nanostructures. The highest degradation value was 35% after 60 min of irradiation. V₂O₅ species were ascribed as the main structures responsible for the generation of photoactive e- and h⁺ under Vis light and a possible excitation mechanism was proposed.

Abstract
Vertically oriented, self-organized TiO₂-MnO₂ nanotube arrays were successfully obtained by one-step anodic oxidation of Ti-Mn alloys in an ethylene glycol-based electrolyte. The as-prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV-Vis absorption, photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The effect of the applied potential (30-50 V), manganese content in the alloy (5-15 wt. %) and water content in the electrolyte (2-10 vol. %) on the morphology and photocatalytic properties was investigated for the first time. The photoactivity was assessed in the toluene removal reaction under visible light, using low-powered LEDs as an irradiation source (λmax = 465 nm). Morphology analysis showed that samples consisted of auto-aligned nanotubes over the surface of the alloy, their dimensions were: diameter = 76-118 nm, length = 1.0-3.4 μm and wall thickness = 8-11 nm. It was found that the increase in the applied potential led to increase the dimensions while the increase in the content of manganese in the alloy brought to shorter nanotubes. Notably, all samples were photoactive under the influence of visible light and the highest degradation achieved after 60 min of irradiation was 43%. The excitation mechanism of TiO₂-MnO₂ NTs under visible light was presented, pointing out the importance of MnO₂ species for the generation of e- and h⁺.
